  1. #209 - Spiral Splatter #210 - Mekorama After about a year or so of avoiding them (more or less), I've gotten back into some of the easier games out there. It's definitely a nice change of pace from the 30hr+ racers I've been playing recently. But both of these games are actually great little titles in their own right. The fact that they're both so cheap right now on the UK PSN store is just the icing on the cake. Spiral Splatter is a fast-paced, 'don't-touch-the-walls' 2D game, and I really enjoyed it. There's a good selection of levels, and the game's quick to introduce new mechanics, which put a fun twist on a really simple concept. It's a solid afternoon's worth of entertainment, and well worth the money I paid for it (£1.59, if I remember right). Mekorama is a puzzle game where you have to get this little robot guy to the exit on each stage, by clicking on the screen and dragging certain blocks. Again, really simple concept, but surprisingly rewarding. Some great brain-teasers in there, although admittedly there's a few duds as well. Biggest surprise for me is how polished the visuals are. The animations in particular are bizarrely high-quality. Would definitely recommend these to anyone who doesn't mind easy plats on their list. Although for some reason both games have relatively rare plats - about 65%. Not entirely sure why that is.
  2. I'm a massive fan of the Core Design games, and have extremely mixed feelings about all the games that came after. As far as the (second) reboot games go, I'd say Tomb Raider 2013 is the best of the trilogy. Rise is offensively bland. It doubles down on the third-person shooting, with virtually no enemy variety beyond mercenaries with machine guns and mercenaries with heavy weapons. There's also some kind of storyline, but it's difficult to pay attention considering all the eye-rolling you'll be doing. Shadow is a little more interesting, and probably the closest the series has got to 'creepy' since The Angel of Darkness. But it's just not very fun. It probably has the weakest level design of all three reboot games - although I still vastly prefer it over Rise. Basically, if you disliked Tomb Raider 2013, I seriously doubt you'll get anything out of Rise. If you don't care about the story and you can pick it up cheap, you might still want to check out Shadow. It tones down the combat and puts more focus on puzzles and exploration - although it probably won't leave much of an impression by the time the credits roll.
  3. Great video. I didn't actually have much of an issue with memory cards myself. The vast majority of my games were always under 500kb, and I don't remember ever having to manage space. I only ever had a corrupted file once - Spider-Man, I think - which I couldn't actually overwrite or delete. Got around that by using a second memory card. Honestly, the biggest issue with memory cards for me was getting borderline OCD about what was on there. For some reason, I ended up with five separate memory cards, and I had this system in my head of what kind of save data each one should have. What can I say? I was a weird kid.
  4. Hey all. I don't think there's anything about this on these forums (or anywhere else, actually), so I'm sharing it here. I've found an out-of-bounds glitch that'll let you grind at least 1000 kilometres per hour BUT your ship respawns roughly every eight and a half minutes. The track is Uma V. Choose Quick Play > Time Trial, and set Speed Class to Elite. Ship/Cosmetic/Performance load-outs don't seem to make any difference, although I haven't tested this too thoroughly. Very close to the start (about four seconds in, if you're playing normally), you'll see the track go up and down sharply like waves. If you hit boost and tilt the nose of your ship up, you should be able to fly over either the left- or right-side barrier and into the out-of-bounds area pretty consistently. Aim for the cliffs: ideally, you want to clip right through them, because if you don't, you might just respawn. On the other hand, if you go too far, you might actually land on the track behind the mountains, in which case you'll need to complete the lap and try again. Flying parallel to the barrier and suddenly veering off to the left (or right) the moment you have enough speed and height is usually your best bet. Make sure you hit the speed pads, and remember: tilt the nose of your ship up. If you've done it right, you'll be in freefall at about 1035kph, but your ship always respawns after around 8 and a half minutes. You'll rack up around 150 kilometres each time. A few other points: You can get out-of-bounds by flying over either the left or right barrier; it makes no difference You don't have to finish your lap to save the kilometres travelled. As far as I can tell, you can even quit during freefall, and your kilometres will still be saved. In freefall, if you tilt the nose of your ship down and accelerate at the same time, you can increase your kph by 500-600 (it seems to vary depending on how far you've fallen). You'll travel the same distance but respawn faster - after around six minutes. My game never crashed or anything, thankfully Apologies for the lack of a video - I don't have the facilities for that. It's also entirely possible there's another out-of-bounds zone in the game which doesn't cause your ship to respawn at all - but in all honesty, I don't have the patience or imagination to go looking for it. tl;dr: There's an out-of-bounds glitch on Uma V that'll grind 150 kilometres every 8 and a half minutes. You'll need to take control of your ship again each time. It's not as good as something you can leave on overnight, but at the very least, I hope it helps anyone who wants the platinum for this game without developing carpal tunnel syndrome.
  5. #208 - Pacer Disappointingly mixed feelings about this one. If you don't know what it is, it's a Wipeout-style racer that was advertised as exactly that: a spiritual successor to Wipeout. But unlike that series, Pacer is just a fundamentally unsatisfying experience. Controlling your ship isn't exactly difficult, but not once did I feel I was actually getting better at it. Even after 5 hours, 10 hours, 15 hours, I was still bouncing off walls, missing pick-ups and grinding against rails. I don't know exactly what it is about the controls - maybe it's just my own failure - but I can't help feel that something's off. The same goes for pretty much the rest of the game: nothing really sticks. The music is fine, but I don't think there's a single track I'd want to listen to outside of the game (and there's like 80 different tracks, so that's even more disappointing). Weapon/performance loadouts and upgrades are vaguely intriguing, but mostly irrelevant. And the trophy list has an offensively grindy trophy for travelling 40,000 km. For reference, by the time you finish the entire 7-8 hour campaign, you'll probably just barely be pushing 5,000 km. Strangely enough, I'd say the single best thing about this game is the visuals, which are genuinely impressive. The campaign itself is enjoyable while it lasts, but it's not massively exciting. I am glad I supported Pacer, because I think the team did their best. But sometimes things just don't pan out. Wipeout 2.0, this ain't.
  6. If there's going to be a new Uncharted game, I'd much rather it was a totally fresh start. The old stuff is over, it's done. IMO the characters were never that compelling to warrant more than three games (let alone the 6 we actually got), and Lost Legacy demonstrated that pairing up random side characters doesn't really work. If Uncharted can work without Nathan Drake (which remains to be seen, but I think it can), then it can definitely work without the supporting cast. Fresh start, please.
  7. #203 - World Rally Championship 6 I should preface this by saying that, for the most part, I really enjoyed this game. It's a definite improvement on WRC 5, which feels instantly clunky in comparison. The driving model here is extremely satisfying, and I enjoyed seeing all the different rallies around the world. I managed to have some exciting online races too, which made up for the annoying rage-quitters. But holy hell, is the platinum a grind. 88% of the trophies can be knocked out in 20-25 hours, which is fine - about as much time as you'd normally expect to spend on a racer. But WRC 6 also has in-game achievements, and you need to unlock every single one in order to get the 'Complete all achievements' trophy, and therefore the plat. And one of the achievements is to complete 1,000 races. By the time I had 88% of the trophies, I wasn't even at 500 races. In other words, my playtime was doubled because of this one achievement. My final playtime was something like 51 hours, which probably makes WRC 6 my second-most played PS4 game ever (the first is Rogue Galaxy, I think, which has its own tedious grind). But with all that said, I actually appreciated the grind. This is perhaps too much information, but I'll say it anyway: my grandmother recently passed away, and frankly I've needed a grindy, borderline-mindless game to grind out between all the stress and arrangements and general grief. Under normal circumstances, WRC 6 would have outstayed its welcome long before I got the plat. As it is, I'm grateful. Probably not what the devs had in mind when they made this game, but there you go. Think I'll wait a while before my next rally game, though.
  8. #202 - Assassin's Creed Liberation Remastered I played this game on Vita several years ago, and have very fond memories of it. So it surprises me that I didn't really enjoy revisiting it on PS4. This is bundled with AC III, which I'm also playing, and I was fully expecting the compact, made-for-handheld AC Liberation to trump the triple-A juggernaut AC III - which is how I remember things from about five years ago. Truth is, I actually found Liberation quite boring this time around. The story missions are decent, and I enjoyed working on collectables, but the side content is consistently mediocre, and there's not a lot else to see or do. I'd still say it's a better-produced game than AC III, and less obnoxious - but not more engaging. AC III has more flaws, but it's also more ambitious, and has more to get excited about. Liberation is very pedestrian in comparison. On the other hand, I enjoyed the environments, even if they never feel truly alive. I'm a sucker for jungles too, so the Mexico portions were great. And I like Aveline, too. A bit of a Mary Sue, sure, but still hugely likeable. The trophy list was fun to work through, too - casual, but still rewarding. Glad I own the plat now, but can't imagine myself ever revisiting the game. Perhaps Liberation is just inherently more impressive on Vita than on a home console.

  10. #201: Oxenfree This game gave me chills. I've been meaning to play it for years, but I went into it without really knowing anything about it. And it's actually given me more of an appetite for (semi) scary games, which is surprising, because I'm normally a big wuss who hates anything even remotely unsettling. I liked it. It's a nice little story, and the characters are mostly interesting. Great voice acting, as well - naturalistic, for sure, but also totally believable IMO. And the fact that I picked it up for £0.79(!) is just the icing on the cake. I definitely don't feel ripped off here. As for the platinum, it was a lot more straightforward, and a lot more fun than I was expecting. I did one blind playthrough, and then two new playthroughs to mop up - which I believe is the minimum if you want to platinum this game. Didn't miss anything, nothing glitched, met all requirements for each trophy as I went. Which is great, because as much as I enjoyed this game, I obviously didn't want to go through it any more than 3 times.
  11. Just picked it up myself, along with Oxenfree. Took it for a quick spin, and first impressions are very positive. Looks good, controls great, and the music's just what I'm looking for. I can't say for sure if it's worth the full £18 yet, but it definitely scratches my Wipeout itch.
  12. I'm not really a fan of DLC - I can't think of any I've played that feel like more than an (mostly unnecessary) add-on. The only exception is the HD and Fury pack for Wipeout 2048. It's mostly because I love Wipeout, but also because you get all the tracks and races from Wipeout HD/Fury PS3, on Vita. Actually, I think it's the only DLC I've ever actually paid for (and at full price, too). Great little trophy list, too. Casual, for Wipeout standards, but still very rewarding.
  13. #200 - Soul Calibur 6 What a game! I don't think too hard about trophy milestones, but I did want to save this one for number 200. I've got fond memories of the entire series (particularly the original on Dreamcast - still a legendary game), so I figured this one was a good choice for me. The game itself is superb, and I played better than I expected. I'm not as good in Soul Calibur as I am in Tekken, but I still managed to kick plenty of arse with Kilik. The trophy list was excellent too - a balanced, challenging list that kept me busy for a long time, without overstaying its welcome. Even the online was fun. Really, my only complaint is the frequent and slightly-too-long load times. Now all I have to do is wait patiently for Tekken 8.
  14. I really wanted to like Shadow, but I don't have especially fond memories of this game. In retrospect, it just seems completely redundant. The gritty jungle setting was decent, and I appreciated the inclusion of supernatural elements (as opposed to Rise's creatively bankrupt army of faceless mercenaries), but was it actually fun? Not really, and I never even went for the platinum. The Tomb Raider reboot trilogy is what happens when you dilute your brand until nothing's left but mainstream gaming tropes. That in itself isn't always a bad thing, but the problem here is that the games have absolutely no soul. They're just products, and it shows.
  15. I think it’s fine as it is. But that's probably because I haven't played an FPS online since Resistance 2. For competitive players, there should definitely be a filter. One for people who want it off, one for people who want it on, and one for people who don't give a damn.
