  1. Amazing year for guides! I feel so honored to be counted among the nominations. It was definitely difficult this year to pick just two guides for each category. I often had several more that I wish I could vote for.
  2. I feel so honored to have my Cris Tales guide nominated for a GOTY! There is some absolutely great competition this year so it's very special to be counted amongst these other fantastic writers.

Please take a few minutes to vote for some guides. It means a lot to all of us writers to know our work is appreciated 🥰

  3. They didn't even do a lot with the current VR, and yet they're pulling for a VR2? They'd make more money with a Vita2.

They need new controllers more than anything. I love PS VR, it’s a game changer for many things. I just hope it gets more stuff like Astro Bot, Moss, Ghost Giant, Deracine (with full locomotion this game would be flawless, still love it though)…

I hate to say this, but the Vita didn't do well enough for a Vita 2.

  4. Dammit Square Enix! Most of this sounded like word salad to me, but the last half where they're talking about token economies and how people who play games to have fun might be disappointed has me 😬

  5. Started 3 different games yesterday and deleted them all because they didn't feel right after playing for 5-10 minutes. And very few things in my 100s of games backlog look appealing right now. Not really sure what my hangup is at the moment.

    1. enaysoft

      enaysoft

I've done this a few times too. There's this weird feeling of "I wanna get Platinum or 90% trophies on this game or else I won't play it type vibe"

      I don't like it, that's for sure.

I remember a few years ago I played about 10 mins of "Life Is Strange Before The Storm" and I just thought, man I hated this character from the other game and already it's off to a boring start and I am stuck.

Definitely gonna delete this game and the trophy list before I pop anything.

    2. eigen-space

It's not even the idea of getting a platinum to be honest. For me, this is what happened.

I tried Control, Minoria, and Tearaway Unfolded yesterday but deleted them before I got a trophy. Control had camera movements that triggered my motion sickness. I couldn't get past the first boss fight in Minoria after several attempts so it didn't seem fun. And Tearaway had this weird mechanic where it tracked your controller movements (and did a poor job at it) and I didn't feel like dealing with that right now (I've played the original Tearaway on the Vita and really liked it).

I'll probably play Minoria and Tearaway Unfolded at some point, but they just didn't click with me right now. I think it's because I've been playing some games that were immediately interesting lately.

    3. enaysoft

      enaysoft

I've played a AAA game, or "popular" game in many years. Not sure if they will click or not, but there's just something about a time investment/new challenge that puts me off.

Sometimes I am playing a game and then my son comes up to me grinning holding a Thomas The Tank Engine and I just think, awesome I don't have to play this anymore today.

I much prefer puzzle games or simple retro stuff, or the Warriors games, mostly the only type of game I tend to play these days. Like you I look at Hades and think wow that looks awesome! I can't wait to hear everyone saying how good the game is and what it does, because I know I won't be playing it. And I have no idea why.

  6. Platinum #170 - The Wild At Heart

Fun little puzzle game. I would recommend it for people who enjoy puzzles with slight metroidvania tendencies and don't mind hunting for collectibles. Good start to 2022!

@Mesopithecus, I kinda did something a little different last year with how I purchase games. I would look at Amazon for preorders, watch a gameplay trailer, and then preorder the game if it looked halfway decent. It was mostly a successful venture.

  7. Hades - So I decided this game really isn't for me. It seems like it will take a long time to grind everything out and requires way too much RNG. However, I did decide to beat the story. Got it done with the Fists in 17 attempts.

  8. Started playing Hades on a blank profile because I'm not sure if I like it or not.

  9. For JD21 you couldn't play offline and had to be connected to your Ubisoft profile (there's a similar problem with the trophy machine if you try to do both the PS4 and PS5 stack and I tried everything I could think of to get the trophy). Is this not the case anymore that it is necessary to play online?
  10. Platinum #169 - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

My bestie @Jens got me this game as a Christmas gift, so of course I needed to pay it right away. This is my first Ratchet and Clank game, and I definitely enjoyed myself. What's the likelihood that I'll like earlier games in the series?

Also, I'm not sure why people felt this game was not worth the money due to length. I thought the length was perfectly reasonable for the list price.

All mainline Ratchet games are good, so you can just play them in release order. The only thing that didn't age well is the strafing mechanic in the very first game.

  11. Hatoful Boyfriend Holiday Star - Just finished up this fun little VN. It didn't get as dark as the original, but it was definitely on par with the humor and WTF moments. Solid VN.

Can't check the US store because I already have it purchased, but it looks like you can still buy it in the UK store. Maybe they brought it back recently?

  12. @GravityQueeen, PS5 version of JD21 only supports the phone app. PS4 version allows for Move controllers, camera, or app. I don't think there's any differences between the versions other than that, but if you like having rare platinums, PS5 is rarer. As far as JD22 goes, there are some bugs with that as well that happen if you've played other JD games. The forums on that game provide more details. I haven't played it yet due to the bugs.
  13. @Dreggit can probably help with this

Thanks @Joe Dubz! I'd like to think that is partly due to your encouragement! 😉

  15. Tails of Iron - At the final boss now... attempted him probably over 30 times tonight. Best I can get is a little under half health. Maybe it'll be easier tomorrow when I'm fresh.

  16. Tails of Iron - Started the Bloody Whiskers difficulty playthrough. Some of the bosses aren't too bad, but some of them are pretty horrible. The ones I had troubles with in my normal difficulty playthrough are also ones I'm having troubles with on this harder difficulty... except I'm probably dying them 2-3x as much as I did before. However, I no longer think this is impossible to do.

  17. Niche Guide is gone this year? That's a bummer 😕
  18. Tails of Iron - Some of those late-stage bosses were really rough. I don't know how I'm gonna do it on Hard mode for the DLC trophy... I'll start that playthrough tomorrow probably. Pray for me 😭

  19. Tails of Iron - Just started playing this today. I can't believe so many people have the platinum because it's actually a little bit hard. Reviews have been calling this a "Souls Like" game, which would make it the first souls-like game I've played. Enjoying it so far even though I've had to replay some bosses up to 20 times to beat them. Not looking forward to the "Bloody Whiskers" difficulty that came as DLC.

It's kind of your typical "Indie Darling". Looks cute, has a major gimmick, while dealing with a "hot topic" (avoiding spoilers). That's stuff critics / reviewers eat for breakfast. Meanwhile we would like one or two more layers to the puzzles, maybe a few enemies - or less weird bosses :P - and definitely less collectibles.

I didn't hate it, it was OK, but I'm with you. There are a lot more options out there to pick from.

Had to cast a few votes for Doki Doki and Oddworld. :)

  23. Piece of Cake: Batu ta Batu Very easy "puzzle" type game. None of the trophies were particularly difficult at all. It has become my quickest platinum with a time of 42:40. It's Like Dark Souls: Little Town Hero I had difficult time picking between this one and FF7R, but this one won out because I found myself cursing at this game more often than not. The battles in this game are very strategic, but due to the RNG of deck building, this can go awry very quickly. Given that battles in this game can take up to half an hour, it sucks to get so far into a single battle only to lose when you've almost won. Bad Ass Award: Just Dance 2021 I suck at dancing, but eventually I was able to get good at this game with enough practice. My bad ass moment, however, was mega-starring the extreme version of Temperature. Grind of the Year: Just Dance 2021 I played this game for at least an hour a day for over 2 months straight for two different trophies, the one for reaching level 100 and the one for getting all prizes from the gift machine. Finally Done Award - Okami HD This one took 2 years, 1 month. I wasn't really into it the first time around playing it but decided to just get it done. Don't have fond memories of it. King of the Internet - Just Dance 2021 This was the only game I played this year with online components. I had fun getting into the top 3 of the World Dance Floor, even sometimes first place. Worst Online Experience - None Best Music - Final Fantasy VIII Perhaps it's nostalgia, but I always have loved this soundtrack. Sleeper Hit of the Year - Maneater There's a couple games I could have picked for this category, but I think Maneater surprised me the most. It isn't one that I would have voluntarily picked up on my own, but it had been recommended by @AffectatiousDonk so I had to at least try it. The gameplay was pretty fun and the humor was top-notch. Definitely was not expecting this to be as fun as it was. Biggest Bomb of the Year - Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot So this is a light bomb. I didn't really play anything this year that I completely hated, but this one was just not as good as most RPGs that I played. It felt very slow, and the battle took some time to get used to. Was fun to learn about DBZ characters and lore as it's something I didn't watch as a child, but many of my friends were super into DBZ so it's nice to finally understand references. Best Trophy Image - Final Fantasy VII Remake I think this is a pretty cool image. Lots of detail here, and I really like the way the stars look. Worst Trophy Image - SaGa Frontier Remasterd I had several games this year which reused the same trophy image throughout the entire trophy list, but this one is the most generic. Best Female Character - J.J. Macfield from J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories J.J. was a really fun character to play as. Very deep backstory that was interesting to unfold throughout the game. Plus, she's very pretty. Best Male Character - Ethan Mars from Heavy Rain Ethan was a great character to follow throughout Heavy Rain. He was put through a lot of trials that would completely break most people, but he went through all of them for his son. Thought he was a very dedicated and interesting individual. Best Plat of the Year - Final Fantasy VIII This is one of my favorite games and also had a really great trophy list to complete. I do wish it was a bit harder to achieve, but overall the platinum was very fun to get while also getting to play one of my favorite games of all time. Wurst Plan Ov Teh Yeer - Block-a-Pix Deluxe Seriously, screw this game. Having dozens puzzles that take up to an hour to complete feels like such a time sink for a game that is not very interesting. It was fun with the smaller-sized puzzles, but doing the larger puzzles was just a huge pain in the ass. Would not recommend this game to anyone. Most Anticipated Platinum of 2022 - Tales of Arise I'm saving this for platinum #175, otherwise I would have already played it. I love Tales games, and I have only heard good things about this game so I'm very excited to play it.
