  1. Ok y'all-- need some iconic blade-wielding characters from games. Spears and axes count as blades. Thank you 😊

@Beyondthegrave07, Nintendo would actually be great because I'm not familiar with it anymore.

I'm kind of doing a farce data science article for the swordfighting website I'm writing for The working title is, "Do Swords Make You Look Cool?"

Basically I'm looking at people's Instagram accounts and comparing Likes and Comments on photos where people have swords and do not have swords to see if pictures with swords get more. I've come to the realization that if I just look at the pages of sword practitioners, there's likely a bias because obviously the sword community would be interested in swords. I thought one good control group would be cosplayers because there's a good chance cosplayers have multiple costumes, some which have swords and some which do not, and that people looking at these Instagram accounts aren't following them specifically for sword content.

Tldr; writing an article about how cool swords are and need to look up cosplayers

Ohhh, well. Let me cover you on Nintendo @eigen-space , or at least, Fire Emblem. xD I'm sure some of them are cosplayed quite often.

  2. What is the camera perspective from a game like Final Fantasy IX called where you're in third person but running through a fixed background with a fixed camera angle? I know it's third person of some kind, but I don't think the subgenre is called "Fixed Camera". When Googling that, it comes up with other types of games where you have an over-the-shoulder view but cannot use the joystick to pivot the camera around the character.

I know when you're in the overworld it's a top-down third person with rotation, but I don't know what it's called when in dungeons/towns.

Isometric is a specific type of parallel projection with equal angles between axes. It's good for tile-based games where you don't see the horizon, and everything appears the same size no matter where they are. Looking at some FF9 screenshots, I don't think it uses this view, I see different ones. Maybe the overworld does, I'm not sure.

The fixed camera doesn't have any other name, AFAIK.

In the 90's, the fixed camera was used in games with pre-rendered backgrounds. Developers would achieve better graphics at the cost of camera movement. Maybe pre-rendered is the word you had in mind? 🤔 Even though it's about the graphics instead of the camera type.

Wait, nevermind. People already mentioned pre-rendered graphics above, oops.

    3. Dreggit

      Dreggit

@eigen-space I believe the category you are thinking of is a static camera with a mix of fixed panning when you are in a location/town/dungeon. Similar to FFIX, Resident Evils older games use fixed cameras and fixed panning cameras that follow the character on a "track". Since you normally don't have any control of the camera, it is categorically fixed to be static or pan along the map as needed.

    4. enaysoft

      enaysoft

Yeah like Slava, Isometric is not 3D, as it's 2D or 3D but in plan view, which is without distance so lines don't bend into the distance..

  3. Platinum #174 - Dungeon Encounters - My friend said this might be his new favorite game. So I tried it. I will never listen to that friend again regarding games. It sucked at first, got better, but then got worse because it was boring and repetitive.

Still, better late than never. Nintendo kind of works within the joycon being single handed for multiple games as well.

  12. I learned that when you're looking at your game library on the PS5, you can hide games. Not sure if that option was there on the PS4 because I never checked. But this is a great feature because now I can hide all the games I've completed so I only see my backlog when searching for which game to play next.

  13. Platinum #171 - Nightmares From the Deep: The Cursed Heart

I like these kinds of puzzle games so it was fun to play after having a little bit of gaming indecision. Did all but two puzzles without using a guide; could have figured them out on my own, but I was impatient.

Konami reminding us that they definitely don't make games anymore, well not good ones anyway.

They've already whored out their IP to be used on Pachinko machines, I bet they couldn't believe their luck when NFTs came along. Already expecting the outrage and no doubt Jim Sterling's video about it when they start selling SIlent HIll 2 NFTs.

Surprise... there is one game they're involved with now that sounds interesting, GetsuFumaDen Undying Moon. I learned about this one just now, and found it on Steam as an Early Access title. Konami is involved, with the indie studio GuruGuru as the lead developer. It's been getting mostly positive reviews, with some comments about it being a rogue-like metroidvania. I'm tempted to get it. It's getting a Switch port, but hopefully a PS4 one will follow. The original GFD was released on Nintendo Famicom in Japan only.

They need new controllers more than anything. I love PS VR, it’s a game changer for many things. I just hope it gets more stuff like Astro Bot, Moss, Ghost Giant, Deracine (with full locomotion this game would be flawless, still love it though)…

      -2022 edition

  17. Started 3 different games yesterday and deleted them all because they didn't feel right after playing for 5-10 minutes. And very few things in my 100s of games backlog look appealing right now. Not really sure what my hangup is at the moment.

    1. enaysoft

      enaysoft

I've done this a few times too. There's this weird feeling of "I wanna get Platinum or 90% trophies on this game or else I won't play it type vibe"

      I don't like it, that's for sure.

I remember a few years ago I played about 10 mins of "Life Is Strange Before The Storm" and I just thought, man I hated this character from the other game and already it's off to a boring start and I am stuck.

Definitely gonna delete this game and the trophy list before I pop anything.

    2. eigen-space

      eigen-space

It's not even the idea of getting a platinum to be honest. For me, this is what happened.

I tried Control, Minoria, and Tearaway Unfolded yesterday but deleted them before I got a trophy. Control had camera movements that triggered my motion sickness. I couldn't get past the first boss fight in Minoria after several attempts so it didn't seem fun. And Tearaway had this weird mechanic where it tracked your controller movements (and did a poor job at it) and I didn't feel like dealing with that right now (I've played the original Tearaway on the Vita and really liked it).

I'll probably play Minoria and Tearaway Unfolded at some point, but they just didn't click with me right now. I think it's because I've been playing some games that were immediately interesting lately.

    3. enaysoft

      enaysoft

I've played a AAA game, or "popular" game in many years. Not sure if they will click or not, but there's just something about a time investment/new challenge that puts me off.

Sometimes I am playing a game and then my son comes up to me grinning holding a Thomas The Tank Engine and I just think, awesome I don't have to play this anymore today.

I much prefer puzzle games or simple retro stuff, or the Warriors games, mostly the only type of game I tend to play these days. Like you I look at Hades and think wow that looks awesome! I can't wait to hear everyone saying how good the game is and what it does, because I know I won't be playing it. And I have no idea why.

  18. Platinum #170 - The Wild At Heart

Fun little puzzle game. I would recommend it for people who enjoy puzzles with slight metroidvania tendencies and don't mind hunting for collectibles. Good start to 2022!

@Mesopithecus, I kinda did something a little different last year with how I purchase games. I would look at Amazon for preorders, watch a gameplay trailer, and then preorder the game if it looked halfway decent. It was mostly a successful venture.

  19. Hades - So I decided this game really isn't for me. It seems like it will take a long time to grind everything out and requires way too much RNG. However, I did decide to beat the story. Got it done with the Fists in 17 attempts.

  20. Started playing Hades on a blank profile because I'm not sure if I like it or not.

  21. Platinum #169 - Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

My bestie @Jens got me this game as a Christmas gift, so of course I needed to pay it right away. This is my first Ratchet and Clank game, and I definitely enjoyed myself. What's the likelihood that I'll like earlier games in the series?

Also, I'm not sure why people felt this game was not worth the money due to length. I thought the length was perfectly reasonable for the list price.

All mainline Ratchet games are good, so you can just play them in release order. The only thing that didn't age well is the strafing mechanic in the very first game.
