  1. Platinum #101 - Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered

    1Lccfa1c.png

Somehow, I managed to skip this one while clearing out all the rest of the AC games. I guess the game takes place in between AC4 and AC3, so it's kind of cool to play as a Templar and see how the Brotherhood was wiped out in North America. More focus on stealth than sailing, which some people will appreciate.

Verdict: Pick it up on sale if you're into old-school Assassin's Creed.

@DaivRules Nothing major, the game just explains how the Colonial and Caribbean Assassins went from powerful in AC4 to non-existent in AC3. Chronologically it links those two games and Unity together, but it's not like AC games are known for their deep storytelling.

For maximum story I'd go AC4 -> Rogue -> Unity -> AC3 if you haven't played any of them. But AC3 is the worst one gameplay-wise, so you may not want to end it on such a down note.

  3. That sick feeling when you discover you forgot to grab December's PS+ games....

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

Meh they weren't that special. Grabbing games you'll never play just clutters up your library.

  4. not sure how i feel about alot of games trophies auto popping when you switch from ps4 to ps5. is this for all games? or just specific ones? if its all games. ill never play the updated version of a ps4 game on ps5. i dont hate on people for auto popping trophies but its just not for me.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

Ahh you mean actually replaying it vs. playing it once and getting the trophies twice. Yeah, I think it kind of ruins the prestige when you get a game with like 60% platinum completion and 10 minutes to 100%, and most of them never even played it on the console in question.

Depends on the game; a free PS4 -> PS5 upgrade, sure. Having to re-buy the same game a second time just for a second set of trophies? No thank you.

    Platinum #92 - Owlboy

Based on the reviews, you'd expect this to be the second coming of pixel games. But ignore the hype; it isn't. It's just another developer dealing with his depression by spending way too long making a mediocre Metroidvania. The graphics are cute and the music is great, but for a game about flying and exploration, the controls are sloppy and the world is too tiny to explore. The fact that they still had to cut content from this game after working on it for 10 years makes me think it was either that, or never ship it at all.

    Verdict: Skip it.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

@Beyondthegrave07 I cannot explain why every "gaming journalist" fell over each other to give this a glowing review. The creators clearly cared about making a beautiful pixely world with unique character designs and music, and they did that. They just had no idea how to turn that world into an actual functional game.

  8. Happy Friday! Hopefully only good luck today and those who got a PS5 so far are enjoying it. Going to try and finally finish Spongebob this weekend and start up Sackboy. What about the rest of you?

If the stars and servers align, I will finally platinum The Last of Us Remastered after my third boosting session, and then finish the Doomsday Heist trophies in GTA Online. Then I can finally get into my backlog of uncompleted games again.

  9. I had no idea that 1440 was a resolution people expected from gaming consoles, overwhelmingly hooked up to televisions. In fact I didn't know 1440 was such a common resolution for monitors.

The last monitor I bought was 1600x1200 and then PC game designers went and downscaled all their game as if 1080 was better than the 1200 I had. I showed them by never buying another PC game again.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

Do people expect that? Surely the next bump up from 1080p is to 4K, I've only ever heard 1440 in reference to monitors, not televisions. I guess there are a lot of people with consoles hooked up to monitors.

I voted a couple weeks ago, so I'm good to go there.

The fact that the act of voting itself has become a partisan issue is pretty revealing.

  11. Who has played the Assassin's Creed games out of order of release? I had thought about playing Syndicate soon and now with the news that it isn't backwards compatible with PS5 I have it downloading. My AC experience is limited compared to a lot of people and am just wondering if I play Syndicate, will I still be able to understand the story?

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

I've jumped around to get them all off my backlog at various times, and replayed them to get the platinum/100%

In the game world, each story is almost entirely self contained, and mostly follows "assassin's good, templars bad" stories with a few exceptions. In the "meta" world, all the real life stuff with people in an Animus, it's completely nonsensical, so you won't miss anything.

I will say, though, that playing them out of release order can be a bit rough. Every game generally refines on the previous ones, so if you play (for example) Syndicate and then go back to the Ezio trilogy, the controls are going to feel pretty wild. Origins and Odyssey are mostly on their own.

  13. What the fuck happened to stuff like shaking the controller in inFamous: Second Son for Delsin to shake the spray paint, and swiping the touch screen to destroy certain property?

Parts of Until Dawn were you leaving the controller completely still so the ‘supernatural’ wouldn’t detect the kids hiding. I thought that was a cool gimmick used in the game to truly bring more of the next gen feel.

But the last few years of Sony exclusives have basically been the samey open world, adventure melodramatic experience. The gimmicks were completely gone by the time God of War 2018 hit shelves.

Even non exclusives like Batman: Arkham Knight had NPCs talk out of the PS4 controller on the speaker. Completely optional and easily turned off by an option in the menu or plugging in your headphones. Still a neat feature.

    What happened?

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

They went the same way Wiimotes and touchscreens and voice commands and all the other gimmicky control schemes went. Once developers didn't feel obligated to use them anymore, it turns out it was easier to just make the standard buttons work better.

They still come up in a few titles, but only if they actively contribute to the gameplay, just the way it should be.

  15. Platinum 142 is Cricket 19! Now here is a Plat you don't see every day! 67th to earn it... and the 3rd American. Some friendly advice: Bring a second controller as many trophies can be earned this way. With a Platinum "Success Rate" of under 7% this certainly stands out in a profile full of "trash" Platinums, as did Ashes Cricket (PS4-2017) before it. INDEED!

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

I'm pretty sure the Americans threw cricket into the harbor alongside all the tea, and Canada's just too cold and frozen for a four day long outdoor sport.

It's definitely not a major sport, the only people I've ever met here who know anything about it are from England/India/Bangladesh/etc. It mostly spread to the old commonwealth countries in the Middle East and Asia, although weirdly not Canada.

  17. Hey, guys! So, I've decided that I want to get into the Fallout series. I actually managed to locate a copy of the original computer game (Fallout 1) that had been optimized for Mac and I've recently looked into getting Fallout 2, 3, and 4. I see that Fallout 3 and 4 are on consoles, but that 1 and 2 are very pixelated 90s-era computer games and I would like to know, since I do not have a computer that can handle gaming right now, if I might be able to just start with 3 or if I'll need 1 and 2 to understand the entire plot. Also, are there Let's Plays of Fallout 1 and 2 available anywhere? Thanks!

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

Don't play Fallout 1 and 2 for the plot threads, they're all just vague "200 years in the future post-nuclear-war" stories. 1/2/3/4/NV/76 all take place in different times and places within the same world, you'll only miss a few references between games but nothing super important.

Do play Fallout 1 and 2, however, because they are great and influential games, and still hold up as examples of how to properly construct a real branching story with multiple solutions to each problem.

And yeah, just like the other Bethesda RPGs, play them on a PC so you can mod them until they're actually fun.

  18. Wow so GTA5 gaming sessions are a huge clusterfuck, eh?

The game is miserable/impossible to boost with randoms, and the only gaming sessions are "time/date are a placeholder, help me do heists", which is nearly impossible to schedule. Some of us have lives and jobs and can't game from 6:00 AM to noon just to make it work with the European players. So you message other people from the same session and the same rough time zone, hoping their schedule is compatible, and they have no idea what you're talking about.

I get it, it's GTA5, and most of the remaining players are literal actual children (I've heard them on mic). But holy shit, the site's lack of "find a gaming partner/crew/team" has never been a bigger pain in the ass.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

I sure have @DaivRules; nobody showed up, and the people who messaged me directly seem totally uninterested in playing or helping. And I'm pretty sure the feedback feature isn't working properly.

  19. One of my friends who is a girl has gotten in the habit of trying to give her male friends complements. She doesn’t was to come across as flirty so what she does is immediately after giving the compliment she adds “No homo” to the end of it.

    I think that’s hilarious.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

Why watch it at all? This may end up being the worst debate in history, and will surely cause one side to cancel the rest no matter the outcome.

  21. I really don't think at this point in time there are that many people who are still equally considering only getting a new Xbox or a new PS5. The great majority are already in one camp and have no intention of ever leaving their camp. Console changers are probably under a single percent so this notion that there are still console wars is complete archaic.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

As long as every Call of Duty: Battlefield Shoot a Guy and NBA/NFL 20XX still come out on both consoles, I'm willing to bet most people will buy whichever one is cheaper, or whichever ones their friends already own for multiplayer. It's hard to believe that console-exclusives are a larger factor than sheer price.

  23. Do you ever regret something about your trophy hunting's way of work? Not talking about regretting trophy hunting in the first place, I think each and everyone of us has thought that as some point, what I mean is, you regret getting into a specific genre, or a specific kind of platinums (heavy online focused or very grindy). For me it would be getting into DLC. Back in the day when I was a broke highschooler and I didn't give a shit about DLC mostly due to financial reasons, trophy hunting seemed easier. Since I began doing DLC in games I play (unless they are delisted or I need to pay a shitload of money to import a disc just to be able to play a DLC, doing so has changed my opinion about the base game so much I fucking despise some of the developers for making DLC trophies in the first place.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

@funboy1246 Meh, if I'm working through my backlog I'd much rather turn a B/C/D/E/F into an A than turn an A into an S. DLC trophies are my lowest priority, especially when I could buy an entire new game for the same price.

    1. PhyrxianLibrarin

      PhyrxianLibrarin

DLC trophies are effectively paying money for more trophies on the main game, and I'm not going to do that unless I really like the game in question. Platformers are really bad for this; Shantae and Shovel Knight both have multiple DLCs that require you to play through the game another 9-12 times, but with slightly different powers. No way am I going through all that just for a bronze.

In open-world or action adventure games, I'll almost always do the DLC, as the post-endgame items and powers they provide often make the base game way easier.
