Popular Post Dreggit
Welcome PSNP! Welcome back to Member Interviews in which we are blessed with the Irishman we all hope to one day be, @Gotakibono! Gotakibono Stock Questions How did you come up with your PSN name? Ah yes, the age old question. So, back in 2006 one of my best friends and I bonded over a shared love of Kings of Leon, who at the time were still largely unknown. Anyway, one summer evening we got his older brother to get us beer and we spent the evening drinking and listening to music. My friend stuck on this song: Now the chorus goes, “Good times to roll on”, but with the singer being as difficult to understand as he is, and with me being as drunk as I was, I started to sing along by yelling, “Go-ta—ki—bo--no.” My friend turned to me with a bemused expression on his face and was like, “Dude, what the fuck is a Gotakibono?” I’ve used the name ever since. What games convinced you get your PlayStation 3, Playstation Vita, and PlayStation 4? Well, even though I’ve bounced between PC, N64, Gameboy and Gamecube in my time as a gamer, the Playstation has always been my favorite platform and baseline for gaming. The various Playstation systems have consistently had games that greatly appeal to me. It’s really that simple! What are your top 5 game series and why? Metal Gear Solid: The series that made it clear to me that games had all the potential in the world to tell rich, engaging stories that were impossible in other media. Every single entry in the series was different and brought new mechanics to the table. And while the series is festering in its own filth at the moment, there’s no way I can ignore the impact and quality of those first four entries of Metal Gear Solid, plus Peace Walker. Age of Empires: Age of Empires 2 is possibly my most played game of all time, and I still occasionally play the HD edition to this day. I’m a huge fan of RTS and building mechanics in games, plus I’ve an avid interest in history, so AoE seems custom built for me. Silent Hill: For me, the atmosphere and psychological story-telling of the first four games are virtually unparalleled in the gaming industry. The second game has one of the most profound and thought-provoking narratives I’ve ever played through. Grand Theft Auto: Like, I hardly need to explain GTA’s inclusion on this list. I grew up with GTA2, GTA3 and Vice City and watched their influence rip over the entire industry like a tidal wave. They informed my early music tastes, were stupidly fun to play and were wholly unique back in the day. While I didn’t adore GTA 5 like its predecessors, it’s still a damn good game. I’m curious to see what direction they’ll take the series with GTA 6 – guess time’ll tell. FIFA: Before you kill me, FIFA being included here is not because of its quality, but because of the fact the series has been an ever-present throughout my life. It’s the type of game non-gamers in my social circles would play growing up, and I associate the series with countless funny tournaments with my friends and drunken teenage nights. And for the sheer amount of enjoyment and laughter the series has provided me, I sort of have to include it here. What are your top 5 games and why? Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is my go-to answer for my favorite game of all time. The rest of my top 5 will be arbitrarily ranked, but even after all these years Snake Eater just sits atop the rest. The mechanics, setting, story, voice-acting, game-play and design are just all feckin’ fantastic, with MGS3 Subsistence doing the impossible and improving it even further thanks to the option to quickly swap between a fixed camera angle and the now traditional third-person view. I could ramble for hours on the game so I’ll keep it short: It’s a hell of a game. It’s so damn hard to shortlist 4 more games out of all the games I’ve played, so I’m going to just quickfire type some: Spider-Man PS1: As a Spider-Man back in 2000 this was the shit. I loved all the cameos from other Marvel heroes – this remains the best Avengers game ever made. GTA Vice City/San Andreas: It’s hard to separate them, but Vice City was the king of swagger and San Andreas still puts most open world games to shame in terms of ambition, scope and depth. Tony Hawk’s Underground: I put so much time into this game back in 2003 and I adored the crazy amount of customization options available. The story mode was surprisingly good, too. Dead Space: It’s survival horror perfection, in my eyes. Which unreleased game(s) are you looking forward to the most and why? Honestly, Dying Light 2. I loved the mechanics of the first game and had a lot of fun playing it in co-op. And yes, zombies are a trope beaten to within an inch of its life, but the thought of playing through a wonderfully fun, challenging co-op story game written by one of The Witcher 3 writers is reason enough to be excited. However, the game seems to have vanished off the face of the earth… Second choice would be P.T. - there’s still a chance, right..? Do you have any other hobbies outside of gaming? I love music, reading and writing. I play drums and guitar, so I try to always play a little bit every week. Aside from that I’ve actually been making Youtube videos for the past 2 years or so as a little creative outlet. I made retrospective videos on my favorite games from yesteryear and make shorter opinion videos on whatever topics happen to be in my mind. Here’s my latest video: Top 5 TV shows, Movies, and/or anime, why, and would you recommend them to people? This is the hardest question because I have watched so many movies and TV shows in my life. I’m going to just type and see what comes out: Father Ted: The quintessential Irish sitcom Breaking Bad: You know why. Kung Pow: Enter the Fist: Get some friends together and laugh your arses off. Or watch it alone, no judgment here. Her: Excellent movie with a phenomenal soundtrack. Not really one for having friends over, though. It’s more of a sombre, “What am I doing with my life” sort of movie. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest: Perfect script, best/worst villain is movie history, tremendous acting and set design. Just a damn good movie. Top 5 favorite music bands/group/artists/composers/ost? The National Bob Dylan The Cure Thin Lizzy Alice In Chains Your favorite platinum and why? Max Payne 3 – It took time, skill and patience to unlock that sucker. I really don’t think I could do again, but I’m delighted I managed it once. Your least favorite platinum and why? The Walking Dead Season 1 – the epitome of lazy trophy design. Have you ever been tempted to switch over to the Xbox/Nintendo/PC gaming ecosystems? I’m not really a Playstation zealot or anything, it’s just Nintendo and Microsoft haven’t released a console that has games I’m interested in playing in the past ten years. I adored the Gamecube because it had a rich variation in its games and had some killer exclusives, but Nintendo, for all their hardware innovations over the past few years, are now completely beholden to old, tired IP’s, and Microsoft seem rudderless in terms of creating new IP’s. If you could have one game from any gaming generation be remade or re-released, which one would it be and why? Metal Gear Solid 1… and if rumours are to be believed I may be getting my wish. How far are you willing to go for a platinum? But to be fair, I was always the type of person to stop as soon as I wasn’t having fun – that’s why the Far Cry 2 platinum took me 5+ years. I’ve always been like that, only nowadays I seem to lose interest faster than back in the day. So, yeah, the fun factor matters a lot to me and I don’t stress myself over trophies; I’ll get them when I feel like it, and if I don’t get them, then that’s grand as well. What feature (besides backwards compatibility) do you think the next console generation should have? I think you should be able to store video and music files on the HDD. And yes, I know streaming is here and I’m maybe an auld, cranky bastard, but I would at least like the option. What is your favorite thing about PSNP? I’ve been here a long time and the one thing that keeps me coming back is the people and the discussions. I’ve spoken to so many great people that I’ve met through the site and had some fantastic game sessions and conversations with them. The community is very helpful and quick to lend a hand in helping with a trophy. What is your least favorite thing about PSNP? I hate that I still occasionally sink a lot of time into systemically going through the deep, detailed stats of my account and completely random accounts as opposed to actually trophy hunting! Is there anyone in the PSNP Community you would like to give a shout out too and if so why? I’m going to give a little shout out to all the people who migrated here in the wake of PS3trophies.com’s implosion. You know who you are, and I truly hope one day I can share a beer with you all. Community Questions What is the worst thing about video gaming? I think when I was younger I sort of used gaming as a distraction from things I should’ve been doing. While I don’t necessarily regret the time I spent gaming, as I got older I realised that a balance is important. During my late teens and early twenties I dedicated a lot of my free time to trophy hunting and gaming in general, which is something I definitely do not do as I’ve gotten older. So, yeah, gaming is amazing, but it can sometimes be an all too accessible way to take your attention away from other things. Do you miss ps3trophies.com? PS3trophies.com was a great little website back in the day, mainly because trophy hunting was such an incredibly niche demographic back then, way more than it is today. I met so many amazing people there and it was really my first experience with online gaming, so it’ll always hold a special place in my heart because of that. I like to think PSNP harbours the spirit of PS3trophies.com. As an Irishman, how worried are you about the Brexit and its implications? Hitting me with the hard questions! But yeah, I’m pretty worried, especially considering my ties to Northern Ireland and the fact that N.I. is the primary roadblock in Brexit discussions. I feel like any potential breakdown of the Good Friday Agreement would be beyond disastrous for Northern Ireland and the Republic, and could easily rupture an already shaky economy. But more importantly, the seeds of violence are still in the soil, and I hope that Brexit doesn’t fuel old tensions and cause any loss of life or violence. The whole thing is precarious right now and no-one seems to know what the fuck’ll happen next… I just don’t want the people of Ireland or Northern Ireland to suffer because of a decision ultimately made by England. What's your favorite song to play on the drums? Little Sister by Queens of the Stone Age – that feckin’ cowbell just gets me going. What's your favorite song to play on the guitar? (I know, creative genius) Damn it, okay my favourite song to play on guitar would be this: You have both Spyro 1 and Spyro 2 platted, so when will Spyro 3 follow? Very soon! I seem to have a condition that prevents me from playing the third entry in various series – like Jak and Daxter and Splinter Cell for example. However, with Sypro I tore through the first two games and didn’t have the heart to go straight into the third, even though it was my favourite Sypro back on the PS1. So, unlike the other games, I definitely intend on platting the third game, probably once I finish Days Gone so I have something quick and fun to play. What is the best-looking car in the world and why is it the Fiat Multipla 1.6-16V Active Plus? I’ve always been partial to this bad boy: Is Thierry Henry the most hated man in Ireland considering the 2009 World Cup play-off handball, or is it Paul McShane? Oh Thierry, you and your big stupid hand. I think as a country we’ve let go of the pain and gone back to collectively hating Bono. As for Paulie cakes, I’d say hatred is too strong a word for him; he’s more like that somewhat idiotic friend we all have that we could never bring ourselves to hate, but we are most definitely disappointed with everything they do. How many tears have been shed over the FIFA 10 100%? Enough to flood a football pitch. Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do if I ever got the option to remove it from my list these days. It used to bother me but now I’ve sort of accepted it for what it is. Toga, in your opinion, what is the earliest acceptable date to begin decorating your home for Christmas? Man, good to see you here! Hope all is well with you. Anyway, I think the first week of December is more than acceptable. A few weeks earlier than that is pushing the limits of acceptable – but can we at least agree that having decorations in shop shelves alongside Halloween costumes should be considered legally insane? Considering you're not Bono, are you by any chance Larry Mullen jr., and if so, does Bono always wear weird sunglasses? Oh my God he’s always wearing those stupid fuc… Wait, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human, please rank these three games from worst to best explaining why. Heavy Rain – loved the atmosphere and was much more engaged with what was happening with the story when I played it first. Detroit: Become Human – Probably the most cohesive story out of the three, but for me it lacked the distinct atmosphere of Heavy Rain. Beyond: Two Souls – Amazingly acted and had a great concept, but the execution was a bit of a jumbled mess that sort of fell apart by the end. When the member interview project was approved to come back, what were your thoughts? Were you hopeful? What do you think could be done to improve the project? I was surprised, to be honest. I’m always a bit taken aback when anyone says they want to hear what I have to say! I’m grateful to have been asked and so far the project works as well as possible, from my perspective at least. Have you played Roblox? I have not – am I missing out? Knack 2 when? Never Last year my family and I took a trip to Ireland and made a loop around the northern half of the island (Belfast, Derry, Donegal, Galway, and Dublin). We had a great time and would like to come back to visit the southern half sometime. Any recommendations for can't-miss locations? I live in a small town called Westport, and it’s frequently regarded as the best place to live in Ireland. There’s a famous mountain called Crough Patrick with a church on top of it that overlooks Clew Bay, a famous inlet that has 365 islands. There’s also the Green Way, a popular cycle lane that goes all the way to Achill Island and Westport House, a historic house in the centre of town built on the ruins of one of Grace O’Malley’s old castles. If that’s not your thing, you really check out the Ring of Kerry next time you’re here – it’s genuinely stunning. Pop in to Cork for a visit while you’re down in Kerry as well! It’s my favorite city on the island, bar Galway of course. Hope you have an enjoyable visit once this whole pandemic blows over… If you are not a fan of anime/manga, then... If you ever were fortunate enough to win the lottery [for this example, let's say $90 million dollars ($76 million euros) was what you won], what would you do with all of that money? Buy as many PS5’s as possible and double my money. Has a trophy ever made you not want to start or complete a game without the trophy in question being something that would be considered excessively difficult? I don’t think I avoid difficult trophies per se, but I’m definitely put off by trophies that require me following a guide to a tee. It’s not really how I like to play games, and having to constantly refer to a guide turns gaming into a monotonous chore for me. Best recent example would be Deus Ex Mankind Divided. It’s looks like a great game but is trophy list goes completely against how you’re supposed to play those games. Maybe one day... ____________________________________________________________________ Thank you to all who participated in asking questions in this interview Spoiler @Rally-Vincent--- @Platisfaction @Berendsapje @Helyx @KenjiCBZ @THEULTRAMEMELORD @PanBuk69 @ZitMeatloaf @MossyOakRcn42 @Burgins See you next week for the reveal of 2020's final interviewee
