And Cuties on Netflix should never have happened, instead they should ban toddler’s and tiaras (beauty pageants for children). It didn’t stop Netflix, Netflix is a great streaming service overall. By that logic, pretty much any sexual content would be wrong seeing as it's generally accepted that you don't just show off that kind of stuff in a public venue unless everyone involved can consent to it, which is implied to be effectively impossible. Same reason I can't just post porn wherever I want. This rings especially true for a place like America which tends to lean on the prudish side of things. What games like this end up doing though is still harmful. It normalize the sexualization of minors. Even if you're not playing the game because of the sexualized characters, you have to look past it the whole game, when it's not something you should just look past. While someone won't start preying on children because they played a game like Gal Gun, it would only be logical for someone that is already a pedophile to be encouraged by media that treats pedophilia as completely normal, or an odd quirk. The franchise creates a community for pedophiles. Not everyone who plays these games is a pedophile, but as the game caters to pedophiles, that gives them a space to come together and revel in their disorder. There are conflicting studies on simulated child porn, whether they make pedophiles more like to prey on children or helps them cope with their urges. What is clear though is that predators will use depictions of sexualized children in order to groom their victims. There are people that were molested as children that have said lolicon and shota were used to groom them. Then, the company that makes these games is making money by at best creating a space for pedophiles where disorder isn't treated as the serious problem it is, and at worst creating material that will be used to harm actual children. So if the developers don't want to cater to pedophiles or trivialize pedophilia, why make a game featuring sexualized minors? This also shouldn't be turned into a East vs West thing. Western media has had its own history of sexualizing children in cartoons, drawing children as adults, and telling stories where pedophilia is justified in passing. The US hasn't been cutting down the sexualization of minors because some of some natural process, it's because since the beginning, activists have been fighting against that stuff. It's true that Japan has struggled with child porn and the exploitation of real children more than most other countries that are considered developed, but that I'd say it's the fault of the political establishment that, that stuff able to thrive, not because of everyday Japanese people.
