Popular Post Dreggit
Welcome PSNP! Welcome back to Member Interview and the final interview of the old format. We open the year with a fresh new interview, early, from our very own @Rally-Vincent---! Rally-Vincent--- Stock Questions How did you come up with your PSN name? Rally Vincent is a character from the anime „Gunsmith Cats“. Based on the manga, a three-episode OVA was produced. It was one of the first animes not targeted at children I saw. Rally Vincent became and has been ever since my favorite anime character, and I simply used that name as my internet handle and video game name. She is also my Avatar. If I were ever to get a tattoo – which I won’t, thank you very much – it would be that. What games convinced you get your PlayStation 3, Playstation Vita, and PlayStation 4? I had the PSOne and the PS2, and both consoles met my gaming needs. There were always games on the Playstation systems that I wanted to play. It was only natural to get the PS3 and PS4. It’s not specific games that tipped the scale, though. What are your top 5 game series and why? Final Fantasy All in all, even with the latest let down, still a great game series. I played FF VII and was riveted by the concept. Immediately got FF VIII when it released, and it’s my favorite main FF game. Played IX, X and X-2 with great pleasure. XII was so-so, XIII the worst oft hem all. XIII-2 and XIII-3 were so-so, as was XV. Yet, countless hours of exploring fascinating worlds for a good cause with a group of lovable characters. Great stuff. Suikoden A classic JRPG series with a cool lore and 108 characters to recruit to your army, a castle to expand and even army battles (nowadays rudimentary, but back then something new within a JRPG) Mass Effect I don’t think I need to say much about ME. It’s the story and most of all female Commander Shepard. What a great heroine, especially since she hast he same lines as male Shepard. Uncharted Classic adventure movies as games. There were lots of them when I was younger, and there were less SFX and CG. Indiana Jones, Quatermain. Disgaea Disgaea games are tactical turn based combat games, one of my favorite genres. They have an overarching story, injected with humor. The first Disgaea (recently remastered), has a hilarious cast. Laharl, Etna and Flonne are some of my favorite characters. If you don’t mind the grind, give it a try. What are your top 5 games and why? Final Fantasy Tactics My favorite game ever. I played right after FF VII and VIII, and I was stricken. I love tactical turn based combat, so it has all the elements of a Final Fantasy game – the soundtrack is so good - plus the combat and the awesome job system. Add nostalgia into the mix, and there you have it. F-19 Stealth Fighter I really enjoyed playing military Flight simulators. My favorite was F-19 Stealth Fighter (there is a slight irony in that the F-117 Night Hawk was chosen over the F19 in the competition between both prototypes). If you take a look at the video. Just remember that the graphics were like that. The gameplay was good, and the mission variety was wide enough to have me play it over and over. Railroad Tycoon Another game I played endlessly. You manage a railroad by building tracks and stations and deciding which loads trains transport. There are several resources, so if you transport coal and iron to a steel mill, you can then transport steel from there to a car factory and so. Up to three AI controlled competitors were in the game as well. Witcher 3 At least one newer game should be in the top 5. Most people will know the Witcher 3, so there isn’t much to explain. What I digged was the interconnection of quests. While I was on the way to one quest, encountered two more, I enjoyed the game so much that I even bought both DLC. Crusader Kings II A simulation. You play the head of a noble family in the middle ages and try to get your dynasty to prosper. The first game that made me install steam (you had to activate it via steam, but could play without steam). I don’t like services like steam, but I wanted to play that game (due to playing XCOM 2 modded on PC, I also broke the no steam rule even further). Several mods made the game even better; my favorite mod was HIP (Historical Immersion Project). Which unreleased game(s) are you looking forward to the most and why? I rarely sit on hot coals when it comes to unreleased games. Nowadays, they are introduced years ahead, and you never know what the final thing is going to be like (Cyberpunk 2077 much? I have the game, didn’t have space to install it yet, as I am working towards a PSNP milestone). I usually bookmark gamest hat sound interesting and then wait until the reviews fly in. I avoid articles and trailers not to be spoilered, and that doesn’t lend itself to hypes. Sometimes there are exceptions, so my answer is „Disco Elyseum“. It’s a cRPG, probably very text-heavy. I like story-driven games, I like RPGs, and especially RPGs that give you as much freedom to do things your way as possible. I expect much from the game. Do you have any other hobbies outside of gaming? I used to play football (if you are American: soccer) with passion, but due to real life and time restraints, I gave that up years ago. Same for building model airplane kits and painting miniature figures (1:72 scale). I took up collecting anime figures (again), you could call that a hobby, I guess. I also try to grow plants from seeds – figs, kiwi, lemons, tangerines, pomegranates, oranges. Is that a hobby or a pastime? I like to read books, though, and I’ll do that everywhere and anytime where I find the time for it. Seems I am more of an indoor type. Top 5 TV shows, Movies, and/or anime, why, and would you recommend them to people? Five is such a small number. A couple of years ago I listed cartoon shows (excluding anime) which I saw over my life, and it was a very long list, even though I didn’t watch that much TV. It’s just that over time, you watch so much. Same for TV shows and movies. Let me try anyway. Movies Goodfellas One of the best Gangster movies, if not the best. It’s less glorifying and gives a more realistic sight of the Italian mob. If you are interested in gangster movies, the film is a must. Also, great start: "As far back as I remember, I always wanted to be a gangster!" Aliens – Director’s Cut While Alien (the first movie) ist he better horror movie, somehow I like Aliens (the second film) a tad more. Can’t really explain it. Imagine Me & You It’s a romcom (if lesbians are not your thing, stay away). I have a weak spot for romcoms. Joint Security Area A South Korean Film. On the surface, a film about an incident in the demilitarized Zone between the two Koreas. Underneath, it’s about human relations. I think it’s worth to watch it. Das Boot Probably well known? A WW II film about the war at sea, from the viewpoint of the crew of a German submarine. Try to watch the one of the director’s cuts. Don't mistake it for the 2020 series, which a friend told me is awful. The original was planned as a TV series as well as a movie, so yeah - it can be a bit confusing which to watch. TV Shows Blackadder A British Comedy series. Each season takes place in a different time period of English/British history (the first season is the weakest – pull through or start with the second season). Do you know Mr. Bean? Personally, I like Rowan Atkinson in his Role as Edmund Blackadder better. It’s funny as hell. Well-known people are featured in some seasons, like Hugh Laurie (later known as Dr. House) or Steven Fry. Friends Everybody knows Friends. It’s funny. Very funny. That should be reason enough. The Big Bang Theory Same, but even better if you are a bit of a nerd. X-Files (Seasons 1 - 6) Ah, the X-Files. A monster oft he week show with an overarching storyline regarding Aliens. I loved the monster episodes, hated the Arc. Some really creepy stuff happened. Would I Lie To You (WILTY) It’s a British comedy panel show. A panelist reads a claim from the card, and the other team has to find out if it’s true or a lie. It gets hilarious at times. Anime/Cartoons Teenage Robot XJ-9 (or Jenny, as she prefers to be called), is a teenage robot. Tasked with the defense of earth against all kinds of threats, while trying to live a life like a normal teenager can be quite challenging. A humourous, harmless fun. Azumanga Daioh A slice of life high school setting anime. Sounds boring to you? It’s also quite funny. If you need something light that improves your mood, give it a go. Girls und Panzer Another high school anime. Apparently, high schools compete in all kinds of sports – here it is the art of „Tankery“, mock battles between high schools with real tanks (and fake ammo). It’s silly, and I like it. The secret to enjoying anime is to accept the premise - and to watch it subbed, not dubbed. Puella Magi Madoka Magica Do you know animes that fall into the Magical Girl genre? Sailor Moon is a good example. It’s a monster oft he week type, and magical girls transform and fight for love, justice and all good things. It’s a feel good thing where good always prevails, and you eat ice cream together afterwards. You grow out of it quickly. PMMM is a magical girl anime – but it’s not what it appears to be like. Don’t want to spoil anything. If you know the magical girl mechanics, but want to see how to give it a different spin, that’s your next thing to watch. Genshiken A show about guys with… indoor hobbies. I can relate to a degree. For more info on my anime tastets, click here. Top 5 favorite music bands/group/artists/composers/ost? Rilo Kiley / Jenny Lewis (Indie-Rock/Folk) Let me say first that I have an odd way to listen to music (I think). I usually regard the singer’s voice as an instrument, so I usually don’t give much thought to the lyrics. It‘s easier to let lyrics pass through in a foreign language. Lyrics come later, the more often I listen to a song I like. Having said that, with Rilo Kiley (and their singer Jenny Lewis going solo later), it was different. I noticed the lyrics quickly. The songs are a great package. Rilo Kiley started out as Indie (Rock and to a degree Folk), with success shifting a bit more towards mainstream. There are great songs. Definitely my favorite. I even went out to see two concerts, get autographs and have two awkward pictures with Jenny Lewis. Spoiler Within Temptation (Metal/Hard Rock) Probably known to quite a few people. A unique voice with a metal band (don’t know which sub-type genre). An excellent example for a voice as an instrument. Spoiler Martina McBride (New Country) I like her earlier albums, some of my first experiences with New Country, another one of my preferred genres. Spoiler 80s music Yes, that’s right. That’s the music of my childhood, and I love it. Pop and Rock paired with Nostalgia. There’s nothing better. Spoiler Gloria Estefan (80s and Latin) Her most famous times were in the Eighties, she was a world-wide known pop star. Still mentioning her separate from the 80s above, for she also made Latin music, singing in Spanish. That’s something you don’t get to hear over here commonly, I only got to know it because I bought all her albums back then. Just A Minute A sixth entry in a top five. Blame it on inflation. Just a minute, isn’t a band – it is a BBC radio show that ran interrupted from 1968 for over fifty years. It’s a simple concept: A panelist is to talk about a subject for sixty seconds without hesitation, repetition or deviation. If he commits one oft he crimes, other panelists can challenge and, if correct, take over the subject and get a point. I listened to it on Sunday nights (Dr Demento from 10 p.m. to midnight, then from midnight to 00:30 a.nm. Just a minute), and later in life, I got my hands on recordings of earlier episodes ( I have 670, and it's far from all of them). If you are into British humour (see, I spelled it the British way) and don’t know it yet, I recommend it. This site links to a stream here. Your favorite platinum and why? That took a while. I play games for fun, which means that every game I platinumed was fun to me – some more, some less. My favorite platinum, though, has to be the first Mass Effect. Somehow, I didn’t play Mass Effect when it released, and I discovered it very late into the PS4 generation. I really enjoyed the trilogy, and having the chance to experience something like this so late in my gaming life made it special. Your least favorite platinum and why? Battle of the Bulge. A „strategy“ game that hardly had any strategy in it and felt like a mobile game. Have you ever been tempted to switch over to the Xbox/Nintendo/PC gaming ecosystems? To switch over? No. To play on a PS as well as on another console or PC? Sure. Why restrain oneself to one or the other? I don‘t understand „My system is better than yours“. Play what game on whatever platform you want, systems aren’t mutually exclusive. I play games on PC as well as on PS4. I prefer consoles, but some games are not for console, e,g, strategy games. I don’t have an Xbox or Switch because I don’t have enough time to play all the PS games I already have, so there is no need to get other consoles. I would if I wanted to. If you could have one game from any gaming generation be remade or re-released, which one would it be and why? I’ll choose „remade“ over rereleased – The game is Wing Commander. I played Wing Commander on the Amiga 500. A flight simulator in Space. Earth's systems are invaded by the Kilrathi, a Warrior Cat race. The gameplay was a novelty as it's one of the first games that had optional padding for missions. Depending on if you won or lost systems, you would transfer to different systems. Between missions, you would hang out in the Space Carrier’s bar with your fellow pilots. I’d like to see how it would like with today’s possibilities. How far are you willing to go for a platinum? I’m probably in the middle of people here. I’ll go the length, I’ll do the grind, I’ll take on the challenge if I want the Plat. I’ll do it the old fashioned way, though – no turbo controllers, no rubberbanding, no online boosting (just to be clear, boosting is okay, I just don’t want to have the hassle with with it). As far as I will go: The Platinum for Space Hulk required to kill 40.000 enemies. Even with shoot–undo-shoot-undo–method, it was a mind-numbing process. I only completed it because I didn’t want the time already invested go to waste. I enjoyed the rest of the game, though, that’s why it isn’t the worst platinum. What feature (besides backwards compatibility) do you think the next console generation should have? A disc drive. I will not buy a console that can’t use physical media. Backwards compatibility isn’t important for me. I still have all my consoles, I’ll just use them if necessary, but physical games is where I draw the line. What is your favorite thing about PSNP? In real life, noneof my friends & family is a gamer. They occasionally might play a game, but I am the odd one out. PSNP is a great place to talk about games, as others know what gaming is about. People are offering help or advice when it comes to gaming or choosing games. PSNP also is a great resource to find new games that interest me. What is your least favorite thing about PSNP? I really don’t like that some people just can’t let others do their thing and somehow feel the need to put them down. There isn’t the one „right“ way to play video games. Other people like other things. A little more acceptance and courtesy would be nice. When I started to play video games, they were widely regarded as a waste of time. „Do something useful instead“. I would have been thrilled to find others to talk about games like you talk about hobbies you care about. There weren’t enough people to divide into cliques. I take it as a sign that video games are so acknowledged today that you don’t need to close ranks against „the outside“ any more. A pity nonetheless. Is there anyone in the PSNP Community you would like to give a shout out too and if so why? @Briste and @Cassylvania build a nice hub with their trophy checklists. It’s a civil place where I like to hang out, and it made me post more often at PSNP. @Sergen was one of the first members that stood out to me, especially due to his status posts. We aren’t conversing or something like that, I just like to read what he writes. Seems like a decent guy to me. And then there is @Spaz. He’s passionate. Even if I don’t share many of his opinions, I like that he cares about the things he writes about here. Community Questions What book or books would you recommend for gamers or trophy hunters on this site? I am not sure if I got that right? Do I know books that would relate somehow to video gaming or trophy hunting, to recommend especially for gamers/trophy hunters? I don’t. If the question means what books I would recommend to read in general, it’s the three Bernard Samson trilogies by Len Deighton: Berlin Game / Mexico Set / London Match Spy Hook / Spy Line / Spy Sinker Faith / Hope /Charity My favorite books when it comes to Espionage. I recommend it for the subject as well as the lively language the author uses. It’s first person, set in the Eighties (so Cold War) from the viewpoint of Bernard Samson, an officer in the SIS, and his complicated life. It’s as much about his personal life as is about his line of work, something I usually am not so interested in, but those books are different. Fiction or Nonfiction? Both. If I want to entertain myself, I read fiction. If I want to learn something, I read textbooks, most often about history. If you could have any video game item in real life, what would it be and why? A duplication item. It’s not even about duping money or something – it’d be great if you could duplicate little things when shops are closed. Your last slice of bread because you forgot to buy it? Problem solved. Knack 2 when? Probably never. Unless you have gun – in which case, soon. You got any Internet Rabbit Holes/interesting things you found that you wanna share? (your favorite interesting thing in general you found online) Sorry, I don’t think I know such a thing. I visit a couple of hubs like PSNP is for games, only for anime series or figures. Other than that, I enjoy the creativity that pours into funny images. I’d wither without internet access, but I actually don’t do much with it other than maintaining my hobbies. I can share my favorite let’s player: It’s Christopher Odd. Seems to be a decent guy, (and his voice I can listen to over a couple of hours, really important when you want to listen to someone playing a sixty hour game). He likes to explore thoroughly, and he’s a really good tactician. His XCOM plays are my favorites. What is the weirdest case you've ever been involved in? Not my case, but one of my boss‘: during a divorce case, both spouses fought - at court - over custody of the family cat. My field is Inheritance law. There was one case where testator thought by erecting a will his estate would already pass on to his heirs (which would only happen after he dies, naturally). So after he wrote his will, he hid it in a hollow leg of a pinball machine where it was found a couple of months after his death only by chance. Have you ever used the Chewbacca defense? As much fun as that would be, there isn’t really room for irrational behavior. As a lawyer, you represent someone else‘s interests, not your own, so not only would it be unprofessional, you’d also endanger your client’s rights or financial position. Not to mention that you are liable if you make mistakes or don’t do your work like you are supposed to. You also don’t want negative word to spread about you. It’s a boring answer, but you have responsibilities. Clients rely on you and pay you - most of them, anyway. Disclaimer: I never contested an election result. If a zombie apocalypse actually happened, what one celebrity would you hope to find as a zombie (and then put down for good)? This reminds me of a scene in the remake of Dawn of the Dead. The group manages to barricade themselve in a shopping mall. Sieged by hordes of zombies, they play a game with a gun shop keeper on the other side of the road. They pick a zombie from the crowd that looks like a celebrity, and the other side has to shoot the right one. I think I’d pick Bill Murray – not because I hold a grudge against him or something, but more because I think he’d be okay with it should he become a zombie. And I could shout: „Bill fucking Murray!“ like in the movie Zombieland. When the Member Interview Project was approved to come back, what were you thoughts? Were you surprised you had been selected? What do you think could improve the project? I always read the interviews with interest, both for the answers and the questions. I think it’s great that you get to know some people even though you might never had contact with them before. Yes, it took me by surprise. I didn’t know it’s not first come, first serve, but randomized. Improvements? Free burgers to download. I don’t know – maybe if some people who usually hold back would throw their hat in the ring as interviewees. Those people sometimes have the best things things to tell. What's your favorite meme? I’m not much of a meme guy (I even pronounce the word wrong: French, like même); I like puns better. If I have to choose one, which I have to, probably the Russian Reversal. In Soviet Russia, wind breaks you. What is your favorite anime/manga franchise? Anime: As a franchise, I’d say the Monogatari series. That’s quite a unique combination of art style and storyline. Manga: Funnily, I don’t read mangas with the two exceptions: Gunsmith cats and Genshiken. I prefer Anime, because voices, sounds and music really complement the anime art style. It has so much more effect if there is a „doing“ with Anime surprised eyes. What is your favorite anime series? Most animes are short – one to three seasons. I guess 2+ qualifies as a series. So let’s say: Non Non Biyori (watch it and here and here). It’s a slice of life anime in the countryside, nothing much happens. It’s a feel-good thing if you have some spare time. What anime studio is your favorite? I never look up which studio did what anime. Either I like the anime, or I don’t. The only studio I know is Ghibli. Who is your favorite mangaka (manga artist)? I don’t read enough manga to have one. If you could create your own anime/manga franchise, what kind of world would you craft, what kinds of characters would you create, and what kind of genre would you make it? A Sci-Fi setting, where Aliens invade the earth. The characters would be part of the Earth Defense Force. It would be a comedy with serious parts. Mix a little drama in. For once, though, more characters would be adults, so no 16 year old battleship captain and 18 year old commander in chief. Most importantly, who is your top waifu of choice? If you have more than one, please list your Top 5! Apart from Rally Vincent, Kirino Chiba from Bamboo Blade. What's the worst game you've played and why is it Space Hulk? Space Hulk as a game actually isn’t bad – only the platinum was awful. It’s average, but it has a rustic charm. It reminded me of a physical board game I have and played with my school friends. It was called Space Marines, I think, There were up to three five man platoons of space marines entering a hulk represented by the board, and one player played the evil guys. They were represented as blips and turned over when in sight. it weren’t all genestealers, though, they mixed Goblins and Orcs in, and the main enemy was a Mech I would class as a Sectopod like in XCOM 2. The worst game – technically - must be a game I put down after a first go. Naturally, I don’t remember. One I remember was Terminator 2 – Judgement Day on Amiga. How far did you watch it? Since you've been gaming since the beginning....which era or system was your favorite? In regards, to gaming, it’s the olden times. When you pick up gaming, every game you play has something new to discover. It keeps gaming fresh and exciting. Later, what keeps me hooked isn’t game mechanics – it’s not often that there are really new things -, its stories and characters. So I’d say PSOne is about the era, because technology made a leap compared to the Amiga (didn’t have a pc back then). New things to discover that were technologically impossible before. Favorite video game character and why? Etna from Disgaea. High-ranking Demon, Master of the Prinnies and (Somewhat) loyal vassal of the Overlord, Prince Laharl, Etna does the episode previews of two Disgaea games, where she is part oft he main cast (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and Disgaea D2 - only found a video for D2). Sorry, femShep, as badass as you are, you are only number 2. How many Oreos do you think you could eat in two minutes without throwing up? If eaten correctly by disassembling them, eating the filling first and then the cookie plates, four. I would time out. If a giant bird would regurgitate them because he is mistaking me for one of his little birdlings – one. What is the most time you've lost in a game by forgetting to save? About an hour worth of playtime, twenty five years ago. This was when there was no free saving or autosaving, only fixed save points. I skipped a save to see what was ahead first – it was a boss who killed me. That was a lesson. I always save manual whenever I can. If I save and leave the room to get a drink and on return don’t remember if I already saved, I’ll save (again), just in case. I save before and after boss fights, before talking to NPCs, before allotting skill points. I even save before I close the game – weird, eh? What are some of your favorite games on PS1/PS2? PSOne: I already mentioned Final Fantasy games, Railroad Tycoon and Suikoden and Disgaea. Brigandine: The Legend of Forsena was neat. The gameplay was simple and battles can be broken easily, but it had all those mini stories about the characters you could unlock that were in it. Just now, a new Brigandine game relased on PS4. I enjoyed Vagrant Story (and this is the n-th time I misspelled enjoyed „enjeoyed“). I played Civilization 2 on PSOne endlessly. Both Parasite Eve games and Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 I liked. The first Metal Gear Solid. I played a couple of Syphon filter games. A game called Panzer General also was great. And I remember liking The Legend of Dragoon, although if I am totally honest – I can’t really remember any more without youtube help what happened. PS2: My favorites include a couple of NIS games: Phantom Brave, Soul Nomad, Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle Tactics. Suikoden Tactics (often overlooked against the five main games), Grim Grimoire, Radiata Stories. ╔══════════════╗ |And Thus We End 2020| ╚══════════════╝ Thank you for all of those that participating in asking questions Spoiler @Beyondthegrave07 @PanBuk69 @wackt1 @Phantochi @Helyx @mumik08 @MossyOakRcn42 @Briste @Grotz99 @DoctorDrPepper @ExistentialSolid
