Challenges

I've been playing this game for a few months now.  I've got the platinum and completed the first two DLCs.  For the life of me, I don't understand what the point of the challenges are.  I'm talking about the "Run over 50 enemies", "Kill 150 skags" and "Collect 500 Purple rarity items", etc.  Every once in a while I see a progress bar appear showing a completion or partial completion of one of these challenges.  What do you get for completing these?  I think in BL2 there was a trophy for completing the first level of every challenge and you would get tokens for completing them that you could apply to your character's perks.  I thought this is what the Guardian Tokens were going to turn out to me but those are experience based.  

 

What am I missing?  Is there somewhere in the menu screen where you can view/collect rewards for these tasks?  I feel dumb like I'm missing something obvious.

Found an answer in the IGN Wiki. 

 

The challenges only grant you Eridium.   They can be found in the challenges section under the galaxy view.

If you ask me, this is kind of lame when comparing BL2.  You could get extra stat perks for your character and they were easier to track.
