PS3 Slim power problem.

anything I can do to fix it?

If it's not an issue with the power button itself and there's no error code beeps (like for overheating), I'd say start by troubleshooting the power inlet. Try the PS3 on a different outlet and (if possible) a different power cable; also check the pins on the PSU inlet.

Barring those, it may be a bad PSU or a defect with the mainboard.

Might be a weird question, but out of curiosity, are you playing PS2 classics on it? I've actually occasionally had this happen on both my slim and super slim models shortly after starting PS2 classic games on them, without warning they just shut down and when I look over, the power light is completely out and needs to be pressed to get it red again.

Assuming that's not the case, and you've already tried changing the power cable and PSU as you said, then yeah, it could be motherboard related. Also, are you using an HDMI switcher at all? It's unlikely, but if the PS3 is plugged into something like that, it could be causing the power issues. I've occasionally had issues with this, but it's generally just been things like the SNES mini, which don't draw much power anyway and don't really output enough power to properly power an HDMI switch.

Might be worth posting this somewhere like r/consolerepair on reddit, they'd probably be knowledgeable about this kind of thing.

Honestly it could be anything, could be a CPU issue, motherboard issue, could even be that a cable somewhere is loose.

Could be the graphics card, but I kinda doubt. I actually had a super slim suddenly have its GPU die on me, and it would still turn on like normal, just nothing would ever display. Didn't matter about the cable, TV, or resetting the video options or anything, it just wouldn't work with anything. Took it back to the store since it was only 5 months old and they confirmed it was likely the GPU. So I think the PS3 would likely still "work" rather than just switching itself off if the graphics card was dying, so you can probably rule that out at least, but take that with a pinch of salt, I'm no expert on this.

All I can suggest is either taking it to a specialist repair store if that's at all possible, or try fiddling about with other things to see if anything works. Sorry this happened to your PS3, it always really sucks when a console decides to just stop working.

Just an amateur speaking but: It's the motherboard and it's dead. Had the same problem about 2 years ago on my Super Slim. It would power on, one second later it would power off. Had to send it to a repair shop, they promptly told it was a motheboard failure. Had to swap for a new one (Don't know if they had CPU/GPU lifted then reballed during the process, it was kinda cheap to be honest, paid about R$200.00 which is about U$35.00 after conversion nowdays, beats buying a new console. Had no problems so far after that (Console-wise)

Also I have some bad news...if it's indeed the motherboard, the saves and games downloaded on the HDD are gone if the repairshop can't recover the motherboard =/, happened to me as well, had to redownload almost 500GB of games and lost some game saves I didn't have a backup for.

Glad to hear you got your PS3 working again for relatively cheap.

Talking about saves I just tried turning it back on to see if I could upload some saves to PSN Plus before it shut down on me again. I actually managed to back up some saves and it was staying on for a bit so I tried creating a backup using a usb thumbstick but the second I connected the thumbstick it shutdown completely again, and when I tried turning it back on it shut down completely after a few seconds.

Yeah,HDD issues shouldn't cause power problems.

Wow customer services are great in US if you can still send PS3 to Sony to get it fixed. There is no chance of that in second world countries, only chance is local shop . ?

My Slim also died recently, first it was 3 beeps and shutdown during gaming followed by not being able to get to xmb at all.  So I bought used Super Slim and I gotta say it is silent.Without disc spinning I would barely hear it.

I've experienced the same issue with my own PS3 Slim: I turn it ON, 3sec later 3 *beeps* sounds while my PS3 turns itself OFF (That was a pain, never gonna buy refurbished items from GameStop ever again ).

I started checking every once per month if the console would let me do something, believing that the problem would fix itself, but after 7 months I just give up and keep it somewhere in my home.

Years later I remembered the console, plug it and turn it ON just to see, and It worked. I have no idea how, but I'm grateful:yay:

So yeah, this could be the worst suggestion you could possibly recieve, but maybe waiting 2-3 years will fix it?, It worked for me, somehow :dunno:

3 beeps can be overheating issues or capacitors failing to send enough voltage to the rsx and cell
