I heard joystick has the advantage because you can maintain speed during a turn and get more drift with it. It's the best for races. I feel more comfortable using the D-pad and got the platinum trophy with it. I didn't like the default controls when I first played this. You can get away with using the D-pad in the police modes which are also my favorites, because the police modes were more fun in the single player. I've had issues with my RT not registering full throttle when I pull it back all the way so I switched to having X as my throttle and RT as nos. That's why my records were slow compared to the people on my friends list. I think most of these world record videos where the players gets a huge lead are using joystick.
