Reversal: PS3, Vita, And PSP Stores To No Longer Close Permanently

Sony has now confirmed the stores will be closed to new purchases on PS3 and PSP on July 2nd 2021 and Vita on August 27th 2021. (https://www.playstation.com/en-gb/support/important-notice/)

 

You will still be able to:

• Download previously purchased items
• Earn and sync trophies
• Upload and download cloud saves

• You will no longer be able to purchase PS3, PS Vita and PSP digital content, including games and video content.
• You will no longer be able to make in-game purchases through games on PS3, PS Vita and PSP.
• You will no longer be able to redeem PSN wallet fund vouchers (e.g. gift cards) on PS3, PS Vita or PSP devices once PlayStation™Store and purchase functionality for these devices close. Your PSN wallet funds will remain in your PSN account, but you will only be able to use your wallet funds to purchase PS4 and PS5 products on PlayStation™Store on the web, PlayStation®App or on PS4 and PS5 consoles.

 

How do I access my owned games?
You can download your owned content onto your PS3, PS Vita or PSP device by accessing the Download List on the respective device.

 

I am only active on PS3, PS Vita or PSP devices, and do not currently own a PS4 or PS5. What will happen to any funds left in my PSN wallet after the closure of the PlayStation™Store for these devices?
Your PSN wallet funds will remain in your PSN account, but you will only be able to use your wallet funds to purchase PS4 and PS5 products on PlayStation™Store on the web, PlayStation®App or on PS4 and PS5 consoles. If you are only active on a PS3, PS Vita or PSP device, don't use a PS4 or PS5 console, and don't plan on using one, you may request a refund of any funds left in your wallet. We recommend that if you plan to top up your wallet prior to the store closures, you only top up by the minimum amount required to buy the desired content. We will be updating this page with more details on how to request such a refund.

 

Will I still be able to purchase cross-buy content following the closure of PlayStation™Store and purchase functionality on PS3, PS Vita and PSP?
Yes, you will still be able to purchase cross-buy content through PlayStation™Store on the web, PlayStation®App, or on PS4 and PS5 consoles and access both the PS4 version and the PS3/PS Vita/PSP versions.

 

Will the closure of PlayStation™Store and purchase functionality on PS3, PS Vita and PSP devices have any impact on my PlayStation®Plus membership or PlayStation™Now subscription?
No, this will have no impact on users' existing PlayStation®Plus membership or PlayStation™Now subscription.

 

Will the closure of PlayStation™Store and purchase functionality on PS3, PS Vita and PSP devices have any impact on titles that I've claimed through my PlayStation®Plus membership?
No, you will still be able to re-download and play claimed game titles through PlayStation®Plus as long as you remain a member of the service.

I'm not sure I see the logic in this. I mean it's possible, those stores are old and slow, but I feel like there would be a big backlash if we can't download digital content that has been purchased (the Vita has only just recently been discontinued, and games are still being added to the store regularly). I think this is asking for a class action lawsuit.

 

Now, I know that the argument can be made this just blocks purchases, not downloading purchased content - but then that means that the storefront needs to stay online somehow to be able to access the products for downloads - so what's the point in closing the store? I'm sure they are still generating sales and revenue?

Really won't be much of an issue for most, I haven't used the PS3 store for years, purchased games won't be going anywhere, just download those via download list. The stores will be generating hardly any income so makes sense to close them.

Even if it is true (which I highly doubt - I'd imagine if and when this does happen, there will be at least a years notice given), yes, the back end of the 'store' would certainly remain in place.

 

Remember, even if digital sales were stopped, most physical games require patches etc to be downloaded, and those still have to reside somewhere, so it stands to reason that previous purchases will still be in a vault somewhere for re-download, alongside all that patch data

I don't think that's true. The stores are still generating millions in income to Sony each month and without needing to spend money on promotion, it's incredibly profitable since they haven't reduced retail costs of items in the Vita and PS3 stores.

Oh, that's nothing. Here's a fun timeline for you:

 

1. There are no more digital sales

2. You can't use the browser store to buy PS3 and Vita games

3. You can no longer use your credit card to buy PS3 and Vita games from the consoles

4. PS5 doesn't let you hide or unhide PS3 and Vita games from your profile

5. Sony doesn't provide support if you receive any kind of error on PS3 and Vita

6. The stores are going away

7. Your downloads are going away

8. Trophy syncing is going away on PS3 and Vita (which already has weird outages, and support is silent)

 

5-6 is very close my "I'mma buy an Xbox" break point

 

If this is true, I'll be feeling physically ill - not because of the loss, but because of the hours I've put into games which I'll never 100%, because the DLCs will be gone forever.

Even if the report is wrong, I suggest everyone accept that those storefronts will definitely shut down one day and prepare accordingly. The Wii released in the same era as the PS3, and its online store closed two years ago...
