A Game You Cherish But Don’t Enjoy Playing Today?

I think we all have that one game we love but when we go back it hasn’t aged particularly well or you just don’t enjoy playing it anymore.

For me, that would be RuneScape. I loved RuneScape in 2008-10. I used to be really excited to boot up my Windows XP desktop and play after school. Recently I went to play old-school RuneScape and I just don’t enjoy it anymore.

What’s a game you will always love and have fond memories of but you don’t enjoy playing it today?

Shenmue

I think that's probably the most apt answer to this question.  It's aged poorly, but it was absolutely mindblowing back in its day for its pioneering an open world life simulator and certain technical elements like day/night and weather cycles.  I basically played it start to finish one session on the Dreamcast, bought an OG Xbox almost exclusively for the NA release of Shenmue 2.

It's still one of my favorite franchises of all time, but I've tried to re-play Shenmue 1 and 2 to prepare for Shenmue 3 when it released... and needless to say I still haven't started Shenmue 3 lol.

It pains me to say it - but pre-reboot Hitman games.

I poured HUNDREDS of hours into Silent Assassin, Contracts and Blood Money years ago, and considered each a masterpiece at the time, but after pouring - I think I can now safely say - over a thousand hours into the new trilogy, I find it incredibly difficult to go back to those clunky controls, small maps and sub-par AI, and find the lack of viable alternate paths to a perfect assassination so limiting now, in the wake of the new ones.

Mass Effect 1.

I loved Mass Effect 1 when it first came out. I think I did 4 full play throughs so I could have a perfect paragon and renegade save ready for part 2. Fast forward to a couple years ago. I got the trilogy for PS3 so I could replay the entire series. Not only is the PS3 port a total technical mess, but a lot of other aspects of the game play aged really poorly. It used to be really easy to forgive a lot of ME1's short comings, but with the benefit of hindsight that's no longer the case.

Here's to hoping Legendary Edition will make it playable again ^^;

Wow you scratched a distant memory in my brain. I LOVED Blood Money. The opera along with the dark gritty visuals was so haunting. The ferris wheel always stuck with me in that game haha.

Shadow the Hedgehog.

It was the first 3D Sonic game I ever played, and one of the first Sonic games I ever played. I know now that it just isn't very good and I've more or less left the Sonic community entirely but the nostalgia for this one is real.

Yeah, at the time they were phenomenal - it is my fervent wish that at some point, some of the best of those old levels - the Opera, the Christmas party with the glass-bottom jacuzzi, and the Casino level for example, would get remade in the new engine to play again.

They sort of did a few homages in the new game -  the Suburban level with Whittleton Creek, and the Winery with Mendoza, and it worked out really well.

Probably best not to try and do the White House level in the current political climate though ?

Hate to say it but the entire N64 catalogue is hard to play nowadays. The controller was always terrible and the best you could ever get was composite video output unless you did some serious modding. The games also often ran at like 20fps. If I want to play an N64 game that's available in some other form (Rare games on XBLA or others on the Wii U Virtual Console) I'll go for that version instead.

Such a good topic. I feel like I could answer this in two different ways.

Firstly, the game that was good when it came out, but hasn't necesarily aged quite as well. For that...I'd have to say (and it pains me to say it), is Borderlands. I loved Borderlands. But with Borderlands 2, and Borderlands 3 existing, it's just difficult to go back to it. When you really compare the stories, the character development, and even the leveling system - which is much more largely gun-oriented, it just doesn't hold up as well.

Secondly, I think of the game that just is out of date, but started me off in gaming, and honestly, that was Age of Empires. I used to play all of them forever, and I'd huddle around the computer with my friends and we'd play. A close second would be the "Heroes" games, where you could literally play with a friend on the same computer, in turn-based play. I don't think I could go back and play them at this point now :P

Silent Hill 1.

SH2 is my favorite game ever, and every now and then I go back and replay 2 and 3, but I just don't feel the same about 1.

It has aged... weirdly... I mean, it still holds up to this day, but taking into consideration the excellent care 2 and 3 put behind their creature design and lore, it's really hard to go back to fighting fucking pterodactyls.

The voice acting was never great neither.

I've said it before, SH1 needs a remake.

You have a MGS avatar so I guess we're on the same boat here. Konami will never remake SH1 / MGS1, and even if they announce a remake, I'd be quite worried about its quality. So I guess SH1 is doomed to forever stay in 1999.

Psychonauts - Horrendous controls, camera, and performance; possibly the worst collectible design ever. Still delightfully creative and genuinely funny, though.

Ghosts 'n Goblins on the NES would probably also qualify, for obvious reasons.

As a Hitman junkie myself, I can admit Hitman 2 does not hold up very well and Contacts is a little loosey-goosey with AI and control. Blood Money is still good I think. Also, I think Hitman is one series where each game gets better/evolves nicely over time.

For me I would say the RE series, especially the tank control titles. Just tired of the universe and gameplay, although I do enjoy watching speedruns, no damage runs, etc.

The one game that comes to mind right away has to be Pokémon Gold. I love the Pokémon games, always have, probably always will.

But later Pokémon games got so many QoL improvements that I find it hard to go back.

That said, I still love the sprites, the music & the region I just find it tough to replay in this age.

And it still has a very important spot in my heart because it was the first game I ever owned myself, I still have a pic of me getting it for my birthday.

I have a couple.

Gran Turismo (ps1) - It was my first game on my ps1, and i loved it! played it all the time. But i just can't play GT today.

GTA San Andreas + Vice City - I just don't want to ruin my "childhood/teenage" memories of these games. I remember them as perfect.

Diablo 2 - Tried to play it when i heard about ressurected, but it's just too ugly and old. I'll keep the memories, and play ressurrected when it launches.

Persona 3, I really love the game, but i can't go back to Tartarus, the only dungeon of the game, because is boring and tedious. It's a tower with 360 floors that generates randomly, so every floor it's just rooms and corridors. There is a minimun change every 30 floors (i think), like changing the color of the wall from light blue to blue.

I'd say the very first Resident Evil games.

Resident Evil 1 was one of my very first horror games and it is so iconic, but the tank controls make it feel so sluggish that it's a miracle any of us had the perseverance back then to play it to completion. The series has definitely come a long way since then.

And the original Spyro games would be another set of games I cherish but wouldn't be able to play anymore. As much as I despise the way Activision has been treating its employees (and showering Bobby Kotick with truckloads of cash), Toys For Bob has done an amazing job with the remakes. They've improved on them so much that they have rendered the original versions obsolete.

I had to think about it, because there are a lot of PS1 games I can still play and enjoy as if they didn't age at all. Or games from even older platforms.

But I just remembered how we used to play the PS1 port of Quake II. Yes, a console port of a first person shooter back in the time when no one had figured out aim controls. I think, in this game you had to aim with the shoulder buttons. My favourite thing in the game was the split-screen local multiplayer. This deathmatch mode was insanely fun to play with friends. I'm sure if I played it today, I wouldn't be able to aim at anything other than the ceiling, my eyes would melt from the graphics and the performance, and I would notice how bad the maps are.

Although, with the right people, this kind of chaos could probably be fun in its own way ?

The Pokemon games, I used to love these games as a kid and played them all right up to ORAS, and then gave up with sun and moon. I kind of got bored of the series and it expanded way too much, so I stopped. But I still have my old 3DS games of Alpha Sapphire and X and Y.

I LOVED Mass Effect and I really hope the legendary edition pays off. I’m just worried about going for the platinums lol

Signs are pointing to it being a single trophy list. It's by no means a deal breaker for me, but I'm a little bummed about getting a third of my dopamine hits. Although, the trophies for ME1 were kinda brutal, especially given the state of the game on PS3. I'm cautiously optimistic about he re-do of part one and I'm looking forward to seeing how much better it is. I'm also really looking forward to my insanity run on ME3, I had such a great time on those playthroughs.

Journey

I played start to finish when it first came out but the experience was so incredible i have not been able to replay it with a guide...i just know it wont be as good as that first blind playthrough.

I too played this in one sitting. It was an amazing 2.5 hours. And the visuals and style of game stuck with me. I distinctly remembered the section where you are sliding down to the left and how pretty everything looked.

Flash forward a few years when I decided to ? it. It definitely lost it's splendor. I kinda wish I had left it alone.

As to the original question:

Basically any RTS game. I loved Red Alert and Warcraft 1/2 back in the day. Cannot for the life of me get back into them. I play for like 10 minutes smiling the whole time due to nostalgia then turn it off to go do something else haha.
