How to gather enough materials without leaving first island?

All the trophy guides I have read say not to leave the first island and to get enough materials to build a water still.  However you need craftsmanship level 2 and to get there you have to use up everything on the first island anyways.  I had to travel to a different island on day 2 for more rocks.

After the tutorial, I left the starting island and moved to the next closest island and chose that as my main base of operations. I brought with me all the resources from the starting island as well. This new island is where I spent my 10 days to get the related trophies.

You can try creating spears, lashings, crude axes, etc. Simple items that you will use in the long run.

You can chop down coconut trees and harvest it's coconuts, leaves and sticks. But save some so you can turn them into planks later on.

I do not recommend staying on the first island. As you said, it does not have enough resources to survive. Visit another island, those with a small mountain have abundant resources; there you set up your base and can easily survive 10 days in a row without problems.
