Popular Post RadiantFlamberge
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-9832253/Dell-BANNED-selling-powerful-gaming-PCs-California.html Ohhh... you have GOT to be kidding me. OK, so Dell is banned from selling its Alienware Aurora R12 Gaming Desktop with the 11th Gen Intel Core in California. Sound like some sort of April Fools' joke? Well, I hate to tell you this, but it isn't. The AR12GD consumes 63 kWH a year when idle, but it can go to 563 kWH when the CPU is at load. Another model of it without the 11th Gen Intel Core can be sold in all 50 states. CA law outlaws anything made after 1 July to 50, 60, or 70 kWH per year. Also, it's banned in CO, HI, OR, VT, and WA. This is highly ridiculous. ?

Popular Post DaivRules
This regulation was passed by these states in 2016 and went into effect two years ago in 2019. Dell has known about this since it passed and these are the first production PCs that exceed the regulations. And NOW people want to get outraged. Yet another reason to get involved in your local and state politics, not just the national election every four years, if you have problems so you can stop them before they start.

I'm pretty sure leaving just one air conditioning unit on all day in your house in the summer uses more power than a PC. In the summer I try to not use my air conditioning unit as much as I can. It still makes my electric bill over double what it normally is. Those things eat so much power, I mean I guess it's like using a kettle to boil water, but all day.

"Hey, let's ban Alienware PCs, even though they've been around for a pretty long time." California already has enough problems from their shit politics, forest fires and COVID-19 restrictions. Now they have to ban Alienware PCs. And there are things that eat up a lot more power than an Alienware running in your living room all day long. A shitty situation all around. I'm so happy I don't live in this state. The problem is mostly, these people, it's usually their hobby. What to get outraged at next. The thrill of trying to ban something or ruin other people's fun. Once something gets banned, they soon forget and then it's searching for the next project. Unfortunately a lot of people are usually against these sort of nonsense, but usually just get annoyed and don't really do anything about. Eventually though, it will come for your hobby / interest. These people tend to have unfulfilling lives and they get satisfaction out of trying to ruin yours. There should certainly be some sort of research on trying to cut emissions or electricity if it's wasteful. But not to the extent of ruining something or banning it outright just because you think it's wrong. I rolled my eyes last week when a lot of people were moaning about space travel. One day, I can imagine some sort of "think tank" suggest that we have scheduled blackouts for several days of the week, to cut carbon emissions or something. "We shouldn't play games anymore because it's a waste of our time and uses electricity, when we could be saving the planet" That idea will be floated around at some point. I've already seen the "We should be eating insects and not meat" ideas. Edited July 28, 2021 by enaysoft

Alienware PCs are bought for entertainment purposes. I had one myself and it was fairly decent. It doesn't make sense, because while I understand the surge in power consumption from the hot weather (people using their air conditioning), I don't understand why they're going through with this. California is overcrowded, despite the land mass. But just about every area that is unoccupied is because there aren't good resources and you have to travel long distances to get anywhere. Traffic in Los Angeles has been bad for decades, because I've been down there before. Northern California is getting worse with every passing year, and there is that forest fire that forced many people to evacuate. And despite all this, this bogus decision to ban any and all Alienware PCs is just insulting. All of those countless cars in California driving around are polluting the environment. Alienware is something that only a minority of people care about in California. But it is being taken away anyway. I've been up and down that state many times before and I honestly can't blame people for leaving. California is completely messed up. Unfortunately Alienware is going to be quickly forgotten as these morons will just target the next item to ban.

The optics are bad and also stupid because of how mismanaged it is. I mean for sure they use a lot of power, but having two regular PCs is going to use up more than one Alienware. And like I mentioned having an AC unit on all day or playing an Alienware PC for 4-5 hours a day, it's also not a constant use of power either. You might be playing a puzzle game on it or Dark Souls 3, or just using it to search the Internet. I think we can obviously see the comparison fault here. In most factories and shopping centres in Japan each has 100s of Ac units keeping the entire place cool, losing it to the outside world everytime someone comes in and out of the stores. Some of them just have the doors wide open all day. There are much better ways to target power waste, and it certainly isn't by targeting consumers. I'm sure somebody at some point is going to post a picture of them using an entire room of Alienware PCs and post it somewhere and get viral. Just to prove a point.

To be fair, Dell hasn't been that great for a long time. Still, I think people should have a choice in using powerful gaming PCs. This is taking that opportunity away. Somebody in the comments section said it best. The rich people down there are consuming resources when they don't even live in their big mansions most of the time. They lie dormant, but it doesn't matter if nobody lives there. Those big houses are still consuming a lot of resources. Instead, these idiots are focused on the lowly teens and 20 - 30 something year olds who are playing on an Alienware computer to have fun. Just because they're banned, doesn't mean people aren't going to try to gain access to them. The black market works wonders when shit like this happens. 5 minutes ago, DaivRules said: Yeah, that’s not what’s happening. If people want to discuss more so on how these powerful gaming PCs such as the Alienware Aurora R12 Gaming Desktop consume far too much energy, then they should. A large part of the gaming industry is still based in California, including Sony, and placing these restrictions is just going to cause more outrage. Alienware is still going to mostly attract a minority of people in my view.

The National Enquirer is mostly a toilet paper magazine focused on Hollywood outlandish bullshit. It had good laughs, but very few people actually took it seriously. The Daily Mail in contrast is sensationalist, catering of course to the extreme politics and the idiots who maintain it. Great Britain has their share of crap just like we do here in the States. Raidou Kuzunoha XIV
As the article is from the Daily Fail, I have to take it with a obligatory grain of salt. And because it is Daily Fail, I'll fully admit that I only skimmed it, so apologies if I'm misunderstanding anything or otherwise come across as a moron. Either way, stuff like this doesn't surprise me too much. It's not unusual for governments and/or big companies to shift their carbon footprints off onto consumers as much as possible, such as charging for plastic bags in supermarkets or just flat out not providing/selling them at all, when the amount of single use plastic that goes on behind the scenes with transporting food in the first place is a million times more detrimental to the environment.

Popular Post Sicho
I'm sorry to say this but the majority of the comments in this thread are beyond stupid and full of idiotic whataboutisms. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whataboutism ) "But what about the ACs, the crypto mining, the plastic... "... stop doing that!50kWh/year works out to 5.7W continuous consumption, assuming the computer is in a sleep state all year long. This is a completely reasonable limit for standby power. In my opinion, it should even be less because remember: the PC is doing NOTHING! To understand WHY they are doing this, you need to do a bit of math. For the individual, the consumer, the saved energy will barely have an impact. But in the large, overall picture, it is a lot. Example: If your computer draws, let's say, 20W at standby, and your computer was on standby for an entire month, that would work out to be something like $5.76 per month, in Hawaii where power is $0.40/kWh. In the rest of the lower 48 states, it would be more like $1.73 ($0.12/kWh). The bottom line is that, for most people, this is unnoticeable. However, when you manage the grid for a state, you don't see 20W, you see maybe 10 million computers drawing a total of 200MW - and those 200MW are used up for doing nothing productive! If they can shave that down to 50MW by only having the standby computers use up a fourth of the power, that will help them reduce demand on the grid in the future and save energy (and carbon and air pollution). The regulation is also helping the customer out since standby power usage is not a feature that you would know about without taking the computer home and testing it. Check the testing referenced here: https://standby.lbl.gov/data/summary-table/ There was at least one computer that was drawing 80W at Standby! Imagine if you bought that one and you are wondering why your power bill is suddenly so high! This is very bad design and a customer would have a hard time figuring it out. So by having rules that prevent a crappy computer from running up your power bill, they are actually protecting consumers! In the long term, what will happen here is you won't see separate CA, WA, OR, HI, VT computers and you will not have to worry about this. Most vendors and manufacturers are just going to design all the computers to be more energy efficient on standby. The limit they have set is not unreasonable. If they put some engineering time into the problem, they could probably reduce the standby consumption even more. And since the computer in standby is literally doing nothing productive, using less power in that state is a win for everybody. By the way: next year, the regulation will go into effect for monitors as well. Also, for PC gamers, make note that this affects ONLY pre-builts! If you built your own PC, it doesn't affect you at all. This targets the mass market, not the enthusiasts.
