The re-release All You Can Eat version has Overcooked 1 and 2 included as remasters plus some new content, but the platinum is way too easy. That made me chuckle a bit - your description of you having loads of fun with your husband all whilst swearing at each other loads, that's the best kind of co-op when it gets that kind of reaction! I might keep an eye out for Overcooked 2 then and pick that up if I see it for a price I like. If you can still get it individually. I assume you can (I haven't done a quick check of the store) then I might grab that version as some of the challenge sounds like almost half the fun. Something that really appealed to me about the way Smevz wrote about it, was that kind of learning process you go through, until it all finally starts clicking and coming together. That sounds oddly satisfying.

And also thank you, it really does mean a lot. I must say, I do rather like how we often find ourselves on a seesaw with the other saying "hey you're doing great, don't worry so much!" Quote YES! And yes, absolutely check out the first episode and see what you think. I could very much see you enjoying it! It was great fun revisiting it, and the improvements on the first Overcooked game were really noticeable. But the removal of the 3 star requirements for the plat was a bit disappointing. Some of the new trophies were fun though, having specific chefs for unlocking the trophies. We actually figured out how to do the split controller thing, so you could control 4 chefs on 2 controllers simultaneously. That was some crazy brain bending stuff! ?
Popular Post YaManSmevz
Platinum #54: My Memory of Us Der Kommissar's in town, uh wah-oh Time for another episode of "Looks Dope, It's On Sale, LET'S TRY IT OUT!" I hope you could hear the studio audience chanting that, by the way. If I had the means I would've placed it in a 70s ass box lit up with tacky lights and garish colors. Anyway, where were we? Unlike Twelve Minutes, My Memory of Us has a superbly telling image. It's the exact opposite of the former - rather than lure you in with mystery and intrigue, it presents itself as transparently as possible, and based on the lone image you already know three things: 1. You'll be playing as children in a trying time. 2. People are being singled out. 3. There will be prison camps. A fourth thing is that with the smiles on their faces and the cutesy look to them, you can also see that they're going to take a more childlike approach in telling this story. Oh, and that the trying time here will likely be the Holocaust. So that's five things. I was sold pretty much instantly, I thought this was a great idea. And right away, you can see that the gameplay and plot are very faithful to how they're pitched. You play as both an unnamed boy and girl, alternating between the two based on whichever skill is needed at the moment (the boy sneaks and has a small mirror that blinds adults with light, the girl can run and has a slingshot). The boy's like "hey, let's be best friends" and the girl's like "aight, bet" and they're having a good ol time pie stealin and crip walkin until a robot army arrives and everything dramatically changes for the worse. The dichotomy of the world-weary narration and dull monochrome look with the slapstick-y adventure these kids are on is juggled superbly (I'd expect no less from Juggler Games). The overdose of fantasy that we're given never quite snubs out the ever present sense of danger, and there's still some devastating moments - my top pick being a child weeping for their toy, and having to climb a mountain of suitcases to find it for them. Ay, that shit killed me. My Memory of Us is essentially a platformer with light puzzles thrown at you here and there with the occasional stealth, driving, and rhythm sections to keep things diverse. Nothing is very difficult (the fish battle is guaranteed to be the easiest bullet hell you'll ever encounter), and while figuring out where to go next can feel convoluted at times, it never takes long to figure out. The controls do have their shortcomings - you're mostly gonna have the kids holding hands so they don't get separated, but the responsiveness of the mechanism is not at all consistent. This gets a bit annoying when you're in a tense spot and have to move quickly! Speaking of moving, the boy is SA-LLOOOWW, and chapters without the girl really make you feel like "come on dude, surely someone taught you how to run at some point!" As far as gameplay criticisms though, that's pretty much all I got. Definitely recommend this one. It's a tad schmaltzy and the controls and puzzles aren't always employed as well as they could be, but it's just such a nice, well meaning game that it's hard to hold much against it. Plus it's one of those platinums you could get in a day, but still with enough challenge to make it feel earned. I feel we all like those, no? Stray Observations - The narrating voice was maddeningly familiar, and it took an embarrassing amount of time for me to realize that it was the legendary Sir Patrick Stewart. - NPCs got that Beholder type gibberish voice acting, with speech bubbles that just show crude drawings. It's especially funny with the robots themselves, it compliments the amusing way their heads clank about like South Park's approximation of Canadians. - It felt so arbitrary how the robots were like "Uhhh... yeah, you over there! You're red now, and everybody's gonna hate you. Sorry but them's the breaks, sucks to suck bro." It fits the theme, and I imagine that's what it would look like to an unindoctrinated child. I don't like simplifying how they decided whom to subjugate, but on the other hand I do like that this highlights how dumb the prejudice really is. - As mentioned before, the sense of danger is never entirely drowned out by all the fantasy, but the real kick in the dick comes from the collectibles. There's only one per level, and as long as you're exploring, they're not hard to find. I elected to ignore the menu option to peruse them until I'd found them all, and I'm glad I did. They each tell the story of actual Poles from the time, and the different kind of incredible bravery each showed in the face of the occupation. Some truly powerful stuff. - I didn't learn until after finishing My Memory of Us that the developer, Juggler Games, is based in Warsaw. Really made me love what they went for here all the more! - The ending is mad predictable and corny as fuck... but it's so cute that I truly didn't care. I hope anybody who plays this game gets that same vibe! THAT Trophy: Spinner This puzzle had me feeling like Milhouse with the cup and ball, because you really never do know where that crazy ball's gonna go. You have to solve it in forty seconds, and it doesn't take toooo long to master but it definitely reminded me how forty seconds can either feel like forever or fly by like nothin. Ah, Time. You truly are undefeated. Edited November 10, 2022 by YaManSmevz

Popular Post YaManSmevz
Ayyyy wassap y'all! First of all, it's good to be back, full stop. And there's already plenty for me to catch up on around here, which I'm quite excited to get into. BUT FIRST! I've been thinking I might like something other than gaming to talk about here, and I just may have found it - travel is high up on the list of things important to me, and it's something I love to talk about. But I don't want no podcast or YouTube or some dumb monetized shit, I just wanna share my experience and hope that somebody can find it helpful, or at least interesting. And who needs a blog when I've got this? SO I'M GONNA WRITE ABOUT THE TRIP AND YOU'RE GONNA SIT THERE AND ENJOY IT. .....please? Okay, let's see how this goes... Traveling Witcha Man Smevz #1: Chicago Definitely gonna work on that title... I'm just gonna go over different aspects in as natural a progression as I can. This last trip was my third visit to Chicago (with New York City, Seattle, and Denver being the only other cities I've been to as many times) so I feel pretty comfortable talking at length about it. If it starts to get boring though, believe me, I will not take it personally if at any point you decide that watching paint dry might better fetch your interest? Transportation I always say this to peeps who are traveling, particularly first time travelers, but please do not be intimidated by public transit! It is a hugely helpful method of getting around. Portland has the Max, San Francisco has the Bart, London has the Tube, and Chicago has the L. They all are so on top of their game that they can whisk you right from the airport and drop you off in those highly dense areas where tourists wanna be, and for a fraction of the cost of an Uber or taxi. When in doubt, ask an airport employee for specifics. For Chicago it's easy - Blue Line from O'Hare. I've actually only flown into O'Hare (there's also Midway, which I know nothing about) so that's where we'll start. The Blue Line goes through several dope ass neighborhoods and drops you off right in the middle of The Loop, or rather the downtown area, which is a great area to get started. Like most large cities though, I ain't gonna act like it's 100% safe. Always remember to keep an eye on your surroundings, and whenever possible, try not to look too touristy. And AVOID THE SOUTH HALF OF THE RED LINE. That shit can get kinda wild. In all likelihood you'll be fine, but no need to push your luck. Since Chicago is one of those wonderful pre-automobile cities that sits on a well-established grid, walking is a perfectly good way of getting around as well. There are also countless bikes throughout the city that you can rent, which I highly recommend if you're trying to get to a neighborhood that's a bit far. Foodz I'm naturally a walker so that and bikes are easy for me to recommend, but a big part of why that's a good idea is that you'll eat very well here, and keeping active will go a long way in staving off any unwanted vacation weight! I'm sure you've heard about Chicago deep dish pizza, and yes it is fantastic (#team Lou Malnati's) but the thin crust stuff is even better. Aurelio's and Coalfire were names I heard, but we ended up going to Piece Brewery in Wicker Park - and the Hot Doug is seriously one of the best pizzas I've ever had in my life. Other staples you'll wanna peep are fried chicken and Italian beef, they're both so good. Harold's and Gus' for the former and Al's for the latter (it was a struggle for me to not refer to it as Big Gay Al's Italian Beef), but any local will point you in the right direction, these are just the ones we tried and they were spectacular. Oh yeah, can't forget about Chicago dogs and the accompanying ketchup controversy. The Chicagoan dislike of ketchup on a hot dog seems to stem from the fact that a Chicago style hot dog has tomato on it, thus negating the need for ketchup. It actually seems perfectly acceptable if you use the condiment on a plain hot dog, although I'll admit that seeing ketchup dispensers made me feel like I was being set up for ridicule. When I travel I always try to remember that I'm a guest and it's their rules and not mine, so no ketchup? That's fine. Also yes, Chicago dogs are delicious, and no, I don't think it matters where you get one, but we got ours at Portillo's. Finally, Au Cheval in West Loop boasts a stupidly good, perfectly seasoned burger, and around the way is Green Street Smoked Meats. I'm not a barbecue restaurant person, but the quality of their meats is absurd. The pork belly alone is worth the flight, and the way it melts in your mouth will legit cure depression for up to ten seconds. Now don't attempt to eat all this in one day, of course... Gettin Down Witcha Bad Self Like most major cities, nightlife is plentiful - I believe a tour guide mentioned that there is a bar for every 200 people in Chicago (for reference, the metro population currently sits at 8.9 million). However, unlike most major cities, the downtown area dies out very early, so if you wanna let your hair down as they say, you're gonna have to check out different neighborhoods. Now of course, a bar is a bar. It might could be that we ain't 25 anymore, but wifey and I aren't going out of our way for any place that doesn't cater to specific tastes. Whatever city we go to, the top priorities are finding a place where you can dance, a place with a rooftop, a place with specialty cocktails or a speakeasy vibe, and barcades. Literally the only time I can get her to play games with me is in this setting, so best believe I'm always on the lookout for those! HVAC and Smartbar, both in Wrigleyville, are great for dancing. The former is great for hip-hop and (surprisingly) some Latin-flavored dance music, and the latter was cool for me as a music nerd because House music originated in these types of Chicago clubs. Of course, the dudes at the door aren't always the sharpest or the most accommodating, so have IDs ready and dress to impress - don't be rollin through rockin shorts and flip flops! Also I can't not mention the wonderful Blues scene - Buddy Guy Legends is an outstanding venue, but really any place with old Blues musicians cutting loose will do. Even if you're just dropping in, it's absolutely a worthwhile experience. Rooftop bars are pretty plentiful along the Riverwalk and offer absolutely stunning views. Raised is a personal favorite - they know exactly why you're there and you pretty much walk in and can see the gorgeous skyline right away. Didn't get a chance to check out Tony's Rooftop Bar in the Fulton Market District, but that one's supposed to be solid as well. For specialty cocktails, Three Dots and a Dash was. That. Bitch. The entrance is tucked away in an alley and their elaborate tiki drinks are as great to drink as they are to look at. The Drifter is a speakeasy hidden inside the Green Door Tavern, but there's always been a reason we've missed out, just bad luck I guess. Lastly, the barcade itch can be scratched nicely with Headquarters Beercade or Emporium, which has a few locations. The Days Are Just Packed Of course, there's a metric fuckton's worth of activities to keep you busy during the day. Whenever we go somewhere, I do extensive research on things to do there, and try my best to organize an itinerary that sees us giving different neighborhoods full days of exploration. And one of the best things about Chicago is the diversity of its many neighborhoods! The city nails this very unique balance of feeling like an intense metropolis and a homey, down to earth neighborhood. There's really nothing quite like it. I'll start with the areas around the Riverwalk, which includes The Loop, River North, and Streeterville. Navy Pier is one of those tourist traps that isn't gonna blow you away, and it's doubtful you'll go more than once, but it's definitely worth seeing. Not far from there is Ogden Slip, where you can take a boat tour of the Chicago River. I hiigghhly recommend the architecture tour, it's absolutely fascinating. Then there's Millennium Park, home to the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, or The Bean. It's a dope thing to see for sure, but there are a lot of other cool things to see in the area, like the charming Crown Fountain or Grant Park's Buckingham Fountain, made famous by the opening of Married with Children. The Art Institute of Chicago is an absolute must. It's easily one of the best museums I've ever been to, with a staggeringly huge collection ranging from the ancient Etruscan civilization to current art reflecting serious social topics we face today. There's also the Shedd Aquarium, which is impressive in its own right, but this area also has an incredible view of the Chicago skyline. In the middle of The Loop is a nice lil theatre district. We saw Teatro ZinZanni, an absolutely incredible production with high flying contortionist performers, drag queens, and a four course meal, and I'm not even going to bother trying to describe the show because there's no way I'll be able to do it justice. Just know that me show like much, it be good. Finally, on the western end of The Loop is the Willi- er, I mean Sears Tower, which not only has the impressive observation deck up top, but a quick exhibit on the ground floor celebrating all things Chicago. Sidenote: Chicagoans like what things used to be called, and if you don't acknowledge this you will give yourself away as a tourist rather quickly. Willis Tower is Sears Tower, it just is. And apparently the Willis group just got bought out, so the tower is likely in for yet another name change. I also noticed that Guaranteed Rate Field is still called Comiskey Park, though I get that one - if Dodger Stadium ever changed its name, I'd probably be stubborn about it too. Up north a bit in what I believe is Streeterville is The 360 Chicago observation deck (or The Signature Room bar on the floor below it if you'd like to save a few dollars) in the John Hancock building (which actually doesn't yet seem to have a name for the locals to reject, it just goes by its address for now). I don't recommend doing both like we did because we're experience-obsessed lunatics, but I think I'd go with this one if you're into this sort of thing. Next up is the Lincoln Park area and its titular park, which alone can take up an entire afternoon, it's seriously huge. Zoos aren't really my thing but I've heard great things about this one. There's also a beautiful botanical garden (glass domed and temperature controlled, so you might get a lil sweaty) and the Chicago History Museum, an excellent trip through the city's storied history. To the west is The Second City, a famous improv spot which is very much a mandatory visit for comedy fans (soooo many huge names got their start here). Finally to the east is North Avenue Beach, which not only has a plethora of activities to offer, but one of the best skyline views you'll find in the city. Beach + Buildings = Wheee. Sidenote: this is the lone picture I didn't take myself. I did a snap instead of an actual pic, and I'm kinda kicking myself for that now! North of that is Wrigleyville, which if you're a sports fan is obviously a necessary visit, if only for the legendary Wrigley Field. Take the tour if possible, I really wish we'd done that but we just didn't have time. The whole neighborhood is an absolute blast, I love how the locals proudly rep their team and that energy shines vibrantly all throughout the area. Be careful on game days though - the bars are all so fun and everybody's having such a great time that you'll get day drunk with the quickness if you aren't mindful! Slight detour - also mandatory for sports fans is the United Center and its Michael Jordan statue. We didn't get to see it though, because the Justin Beiber fans were already starting to line up around the venue. I remember thinking "wow, these teenaged girls must love the Bulls" until my wife explained to my dumb ass that they were here for a concert. Just a few quick additions - the 606 Trail, an elevated urban hike on a repurposed rail line is highly recommended if you like to work a little extra fitness into your sightseeing. Wicker Park is a chill lil hipster neighborhood with a lot of cool second hand stores and record shops, and Ed Debevic's is a fun 50s style diner where the staff are deliberately rude, and it's weirdly fun. Okay! Sorry that went on for so long, and if you actually read all of that I'm quite impressed. If by some freakish black magic anybody found this interesting (or at least helpful or informative), then yay! I'd be happy to write up about another city. If not, that's totally cool too. I finally got to write a non-gaming piece and I had a lot of fun writing it. I do believe I've taken up enough of your time, I'll be off. Thanks for reading?

Popular Post YaManSmevz
Monthly Update with Ya Man Smevz May 2022 This month's top story - my gaming burnout and apathy finally snapped my monthly platinum streak - for the first time since August of 2020, I do not have a plat to show for this month. My last ditch effort resulted in a platinum popping at 12:05 AM. Too little, too late. But the good news? June is off to a bangin start! Anyway we're gonna dive right in, cuz between gaming malaise and being out of town frequently, there's not a lot to report! 87.61% Overall Completion (+0.29) 448 Unearned Trophies (-7) 3.32 Trophies Per Day (-0.08) 54 Platinums (+0) (or -0, is that more positive?) Level 337 (+1) Game of the Month Even though the grind of GTA V, WWE 2K22, and MLB The Show 20 are still ongoing, I don't consider either eligible (The Show 19 won at the end of last year, and 2K and GTA each got the nod recently), so we're left with a two horse race. Resident Evil 4 has been the bloody hug from an old friend I had suspected it would be, and was the de facto choice until I popped in the eventual winner, the lovely Artful Escape! I remember the good Doctor had many great things to say about it, and it was fairly inexpensive and short (gaming experts would likely add an AF to that descriptor), so I could see no harm. Except.. I'm a very petty man. Parappa the Rapper reigns as my quickest platinum, and... I dunno, I just like that. So I deliberately got the first trophy before we went out of town this past weekend just to pad the completion time. Beautiful game though, and I'm really looking forward to writing about it! Rating the Month While this month shares a lack of productivity with April, I actually think this was better. When I was a kid, sometimes while playing I would pretend I had my own TV network, and play everything in half hour (or hour if I was really in it) installments, pretending everything was a show I was airing. It was just fun, and for some reason the way I played this month kinda reminded me of that. Except for GTA V though, that shit is all business right now. Aw man, the shit I will have to talk about when I finally write about it and the Criminal Masterminds challenges??? I spent the rest of my free time, y'know, doing other stuff. I didn't think of taking a break as a bad thing, rather a much needed reprieve. I love gaming, I love trophy hunting, and I love talking about it here with all you lovely people. But the last thing I want is to completely lose interest and spend another five years not playing games at all! Plus, in spite of no completions, I did make progress with every game on the Hitlist. All things considered, I'm awarding the month of May three out of five GlamourGonns! June Goals Nothin lazy, nothin crazy. Pretty much the same goals, but I am being quite firm about it cuz who wants the same goals every month?? 1. Once again, get back over 88%. 2. Once again, get under 400 unearned. 3. Doomsday is a demanding mistress, so I'm not gonna jump down my own throat about platinums. But I can do at least two. Gaming Hitlist Firstly, a new rule - only one relentlessly grindy game a month! I could've saved myself a lot of grief if I'd adopted this sooner! 1. GTA V An obvious one. Got two more CMM runs left, one more elite challenge, stunt jumps, and gold medals left. A lot, but considering how much else I've had to do to get to this point? We made it to 89% my guy... ain't no stoppin us now. 2. Resident Evil 4 I was really enjoying this re-visit, then just fell off. I don't want another unfinished game hanging around, I've been very good about keeping on newer games til they're finished, and look at this guy! He deserves it! 3. Transistor Speaking of deserving games, I'm at long last ready to give this one its due. Finally in the right headspace to just sit back and let Supergiant work their magic. 4. Stick It to the Man! The dose of chill and fun that The Artful Escape reminded me I've been needing! Plus, I got this along with Flipping Death and from what I recall reading about these thanks to (once again) the good Doctor, it might be best to go with this one first. Fun fact: Doc has a successful rapping career under the name B-Money, I'm surprised at how modest he is about that! 5. Unmetal I've been craving a Metal Gear Solid experience minus the colossal time requirements for some time now, and this might could fit the bill. The whole Hot Shots!/Naked Gun approach looks fun too! Edited June 1, 2022 by YaManSmevz
DrBloodmoney
Dawg, I don’t know what makes me happier - seeing Space Ghost at the top of this update… …hearing someone else in the checklist crew finally popped the cork on The Artful Escape (and like it, more importantly!)… … finding out you have both Stick It to The Man and Transistor in your gaming cross-hairs… …or having my rapping alter Ego exposed! ? Always great to check in with the monthly YaManSmupdate - and looking forward to reading your thoughts on The Artful Escape when you have time to address your fans! ?

I can't believe it took me so long to think of Space Ghost! And as far as Transistor and the like... let's just say I've been behind as of late! Sidenote, Mr. Clarke had a pretty sizeable lead in recommendations so far this year, but games in the upcoming stretch will see you come roaring back! Little surprise though.. as far as recommended games go, you two are the top dogs (at least as far as my checklist is concerned)? And I'm sorry, but I couldn't keep your secret any longer... Heather342
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on Transistor when you finish it. The last game I played it was a toss up between Transistor and Bastion, and I went with Bastion in the end. If you haven't played it I would thoroughly recommend it too ?

Popular Post YaManSmevz
Platinum #56: UnMetal Locked up, they won't let me out While I love a good spoof as much as the next person, I'll also quickly admit that it's an extremely easy thing to fumble. For every Airplane! or Don't Be a Menace, there are countless Disaster/Epic/Date Movie type deals that are utter garbage and make the genre as a whole that much harder to sell to somebody, and it was for this very reason that I initially balked at the idea of trying out UnMetal. The macho voice, the tough guy jokes, not to mention that at the time I was still in the process of converting to Team 16-Bit. Didn't think about it much until I saw it in a recent sale and gave the trailer another watch... and this time, I really got what they were going for, and found myself unexpectedly excited to play it! Before going further, I should point out that "they" is barely applicable. UnMetal's developer is so small, its name is in the developer's actual Twitter handle - @UnEpic_Fran. In fact, that's the developer name listed here on PSNProfiles! All I've been able to gather is that this is the work of one Francisco Téllez de Meneses, a Barcelona-based game developer who merely collaborates with others, naming his company UnEpic after the first game he made back in 2011. This game has 84 credits - Téllez de Meneses created it, another guy did graphics, and two others handled the music and sound effects. The remaining 79 consist of the different language voice casts, translators, the publisher's team, and testers. Makes me wish I'd paid full price, as I enjoyed this game immensely! You play as Jesse Fox, a civilian convicted of a crime he didn't commit and held in a military base. In the midst of a daring escape, he finds himself in the middle of a terrorist plot where he has no choice but to align himself with a captured Colonel and photographer to take down the baddies and end the threat to the world as we know it. UnMetal is very obviously modeled after the NES Metal Gear games and lovingly parodies not only the franchise as a whole, but this genre (it's a jawn-rah) altogether. Gags about unrealistic things in games are far from new of course, but there's a specificity here, as well as actually being surprisingly funny more often than not, that creates way more hits than misses. Overall, the writing is sharp enough to keep the format afloat, when in lesser hands it could get stale quite quickly! We progress as Fox is telling his story, which gives a few options here and there. There will be moments where he pauses to remember a detail, and it's on you to pick - this is introduced very early in the game. UnMetal does use this to troll the gamer at times though - sometimes if you choose something that sounds easier, it will backfire in ridiculous fashion. As well as the game-oriented humor is nailed here, thankfully it isn't strictly gamer-based (lest it become reminiscent of a sprite webcomic or something) and is wisely rounded out. There's a healthy helping of Hot Shots/Naked Gun type humor, with absurd logic and bumbling heroes leading the charge. Creating chloroform by combining the (widely well known) chemicals Chloro and Form in an Erlenmeyer flask, the hair-brained enemies (one of which even forgets his lines), our protagonist generally not being able to put two and two together and keep up with the player, that kind of shit just takes me back to watching the aforementioned movies and dying of laughter at the dumbest things and loving it. Of course, this isn't exactly the second coming of Metal Gear or anything like that. The writing does occasionally fall flat, with many jokes missing their mark and the unreliable narrator bit feeling a bit contrived at times. And while Andrew Miller's David Hayter impression is largely pretty spot on, there are more than a few moments where it's obvious that you're listening to just that. Most of the time you feel like you're listening to Solid Snake, but sometimes you feel like you're listening to a highly talented moose. Two aspects that get a lot of flak are the gameplay and the graphics. On both counts, I get it, but I can't entirely agree. It seems pretty clear that they're going for a NES feel, and I can't complain when it looks as such. I rather liked it, actually! And besides, the guys who made this game are handily outnumbered just by its English voice acting cast alone - I think we can cut them a break where this is concerned, yeah? There are things that drag the gameplay down though, like how finding the collectibles will have you punching everything. There are hidden areas behind certain walls and objects, and you're required to find at least fifteen. They're mostly boosts for stamina and max ammo, so they're certainly worth the trouble, but it does get to be a drag after a while. Beyond that though, I can't find too much fault. The bosses could be a bit trying at times, but the game pulls off that great trick where they feel like a difficulty rating of 6 until you figure out what you're supposed to do, and then the rating drops down to a 3 or 4. I never felt that there were any cheap shots or anything UnFair going on, although a few bosses took me more tries than I'd care to admit! In spite of its shortcomings and fairly one dimensional nature, UnMetal proved to be Post-Platinum Play Posse material! I did that thing where you play it on Hard to cut down on your completion time, but the joke was on me as I ended up playing it again on Easy just so I could see the stuff that I'd missed. There are so many jokes crammed into this thing! So is this the best 2D worshiping action game around? Probably not. But I really enjoyed it, I thought the mechanics were just good enough to keep up with the humor and it didn't ask for too much of my time. It certainly wasn't the hardest game I've ever played but the challenge was definitely enough to keep me on my toes throughout. If you dig 16-bit styled games, NES styled gameplay, and Zucker Brothers styled humor, this is definitely worth a try. Oh, and if you have an opinion on Metal Gear. Like or dislike, I think you'd get a kick out of it! Stray Observations - When simply asked to explain himself, Fox dramatically opens with "IN 1972..." Surely we can all relate to having to start a story this way. - While Andrew Miller isn't on it 100% of the time (completely understandable, that kind of voice has got to take its toll), for the most part he nails it. However, can we make some noise and show some love for George Robinson's understated emanating of Paul Eiding's Colonel Campbell? You can see the character parallel immediately, and Robinson absolutely does his part. - The whole macho MacGyver shtick could've gotten really old if Fox wasn't so delightfully dense. Things like talking to someone on UnMetal's version of codec and seeing an enemy hand cover their mouth and he merely responds with something like "I can't understand you with your mouth covered" just gets me. - I very much enjoyed the bare-bones stealth gameplay. There are countless times where you have to be quite strategic in when you move and who you take out first, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Also off-screen enemies are cleverly represented with red arrows to denote where they're facing. As mentioned before, no cheap shots here. - There are, however, a few annoying areas, my least favorite being navigating your way through a mine field. I get it and all, but a segment like this really would've hugely benefitted from smoother controls. In all fairness though, the auto-saving here was very reasonable! - One of the many things that rewarded my re-play was in the catacombs close to the end. There's a trophy for not breaking down any doors here, so it wasn't til my second playthrough that one of them treated me to an outstanding Legend of Zelda gag. Again, there's a truckload of shit like this? - I cracked up at Fox stopping in his tracks to geek out over General X's sound system - a multiband equalizer, an auto amplified subwoofer, and most important of all, a double deck cassette player. Though if this really does take place in 1972, that actually would be mad impressive. - As the Colonel explained how he hid his ring while in captivity, I couldn't help hearing the entire dialogue in Christopher Walken's voice. I can only assume this was the intention! - The end was very silly, and the post-credits gag was even sillier... and it was perfect. THAT Trophy: YOU'RE A TOUGH GUY UnMetal can be a fairly tricky game at times, and doing my first playthrough on Hard definitely gave me a lot of moments where I felt stumped for a bit, but they never lasted terribly long. Tough but fair, I guess you could say. Plus, the trophy list is fairly forgiving, so nothing else comes to mind! You're not required to do a death-free speed run or anything like that, and everything is fairly self-explanatory, so completing the game in Hard mode is by default the roughest of the bunch. A big yes on both counts! I've only really become aware in the last year or so of how many studios are just how small some teams really are, and sometimes it's less than a team! Boggles the mind.
