Popular Post DFuzed
As mentioned above, my typical monthly update wasn't done due to some personal issues. Mainly my (now ex)girlfriend decided we were done near the end of October and moved out while I was at work. Like literally had nothing packed outside of stuff in the storage room then next I know her stuff was gone, as were some of my things. Luckily I she forgot her Nintendo Switch and refused to give it to her until I got my few items back. And she knew better than to take my systems with her too. I'm not going to get into my drama anymore than that. I'm not here to make a huge scene nor smear mud over someone who can't defend themselves. I'm here to talk about the games I've played this month: Life is Strange 3 (PS4 and PS5): I've always enjoyed this series of games, first for the story, it's mechanics and how simple the trophies can be. This game hasn't disappointed me either. Just how simple mistakes and decisions can change how people in the game react later on (such as winning a Foosball game early on). And how the protagonists' abilities evolve as the story progresses. My first game I went in blind, figuring out most of the trophies without too much help then going back after each chapter to get the ones I missed without changing my decisions. My second playthrough I'm doing different choices, mostly romancing the other romantic character. I've also seen the subtle clues to how the last chapter finale twist ends. Other than that I've done my second game very similar to my first. Especially enjoyed the soundtrack and songs (Dido's one hit being included surprised me and their take on Blister in the Sun by Violent Femmes made me laugh). Very likely have this done in the near future. Link-a-Pix (PS4 and Vita): With the one game done and the other almost finished (technically I've finished both editions at this time) I actually played these as a nice way to relax after work, even if it was on a puzzle that wasn't one needed for a trophy. Even after the one game was platted I would work on a picture when I wanted to take things easy for a bit. I might even just finish all the pictures on the console if I feel like it. Or at least the color versions. Once I found a site that had the needed pictures for the trophies I did focus on those when it was needed for trophies though. Diablo 2 Resurrected: So I've become addicted to this game badly. I never played the series much altogether but now I'm making a serious effort towards it. But I might have tried biting too much off too early by doing Hardcore Mode first. I kept dying, most of the time from trying to grind out levels and not taking care to see what's going on. I've mostly played a Necromancer, focusing on Golems to tank, curses to debuff, attacking with long-range weapons like bows and crossbows and a long-range mercenary who can freeze opponents. I've gotten frustrated when my character got killed but it hasn't deterred me from quitting. So I will be focusing on just a normal run, get the game finished then figure it out from there. That's it for October. Will update again at the end of this month. Edited November 7, 2021 by DFuzed
Popular Post Bl4ckb1rd92
Update: Was feeling refreshed and knocked out a few challenges. Feels good taking my Vita to sit in the van while I'm at work; feels good to be playing something instead of trying to get a 10 minute nap in during my last 30 minutes of lunch. Dark Souls II - started at 50% --> currently at 82% Finished rounding up all the spells from the first playthrough. Darklurker really REALLY sucked. I lost approximately 250k souls, finally broke down and grinded out a few levels to get my first attunement slot (I've been playing without magic the whole time), infused and upgraded a whole new set for resistances, went through 83 effigies, 12 old radiant lifegems, 5 bright bugs, used 8 bonfire ascetics at Crestfallen's Retreat for effigy farming, and to top it all of, I forgot to re-equip the set and staff before I went in for the last attempt, so I beat Darlurker with my normal armor and no magic anyway. Talk about wasting time and resources. After that, Vendrick was pretty damn easy. I also finished off Navlaan's questline without killing anyone. Ready for NG+, but I'm going to stay away from DS2 until next weekend, I'm about Soulsed out after that. Spyro 2 - started at 19% --> 06SEP2021 Control - 13% --> Haven't touched it, yet. Plan is finished, I'll get to it eventually, maybe. FFVII - started at 10% --> currently at 15% I went from my save outside of Cosmo Canyon, forgot I found out the hard way the glitch didn't work anymore and then continued. Got all the way to Nibelheim, tried to get Tifa's level 4 limit and then remembered you can't get it until after you get the Highwind. Then I went to get Red XIII's level 4 limit and got wiped. That's when I went to load up and realized I hadn't saved. Closed the game and I'll work on it after work, but I couldn't play it after that. Berserk - started at 4% --> currently at 67% Made my collection list, I'm better off than I thought I was. I brought Zodd up to layer 81 start and missed a behelit on floor 75 (ugh). Brought Schierke up to layer 21 start and I'll continue from there. I'm thinking I'll just bring all remaining characters up to layer 81 start and check them all off one after another. Spyro 3 - started at 8% --> 30OCT2021 Call of Cthulhu - started at 22% --> I don't remember why I dropped this one to begin with, so I'll probably be starting over when I get to it. Naruto: UNS - started at 10% --> 01NOV2021 Greedfall - started at 14% --> Another game that I don't remember why I dropped it. Been looking at gameplay and don't understand why I would unless I just got busy with work and forgot about it. Fernz Gate - started at 1% --> Currently at 18% I'm glad I added this one so I had something to do during lunch at work. I don't know why I stopped playing games on my Vita, but I'm glad I started again. I'll probably finish this one sometime during the week after next. I decided DS2 is going to be my 150, Berserk is probably going to be my 175. Anyone see the Gameplay Preview for Elden Ring? Looks like I'm going to have another game that's going to repetitively curb-stomp my frustrations that I'm going to wind up playing anyway.

As part of my self prescribed rehab for long Covid I've been exercising and meditating and hour each a day (the later to rebuild my focus due to cognitive effects I experience) and this is coming out of what would be my gaming time. No regrets, I think even once I get these symptoms shifted I'll continue these habits for a quality of life boost I've also been using my 'free' time trying to build relationships with the team I now have a supervisory role in and so I've either been pretending to be a social butterfly over coffee/beer or (sad dweeb that I am) watching youtube videos on how to be make friends This week has lead to larger questions about gaming (which I have no shame in saying is the biggest passion and interest in life) and where exactly it should 'fit' in to the life I am trying to cultivate. This is not a 'I quit gaming' post by any means, I do love vidya and some of the best moments in my life have been games related (my wow guild raiding, my university computer society lan parties, watching E3 with friends like it was a big sporting event/oscars to name a few) but at the moment it feels like something that I shouldn't spend too much time or energy on... for now at least That's so great! I love all of this. Personal well being is the most important thing, and frankly I could learn a thing or six from you on this front! 5 hours ago, DFuzed said: As mentioned above, my typical monthly update wasn't done due to some personal issues. Sorry to hear that man, that's never a fun situation. Glad that you're keepin your head up, though! Quick kinda-sorta-but-not-really update - I'm adding Red Dead Revolver. I'm writing reviews of 2000s Rockstar games and suddenly I realized there was a glaring, Revolver sized hole in the order! Should make quick work of it, but I'll hold off on adding anything else here for a while - Hotline and Witness are giving my average gamer ass a bit more trouble than I'd anticipated? Just wanted to mention that in the odd case that I finish it before my next update, it would feel disingenuous to be like "oh btw here's a new completed game I didn't mention before, whaddayaknow...."
Popular Post iXanon
Update #1 I only joined on Wednesday, but it's easier to remember if I make updates on a Monday.. ? I've already made some good progress in L.A. Noire, going from 30% completion to 59%.. It's practically the only game I've played since signing up, and I'm nearing the end of the storyline for a second time (previously on X360). It's the first time I've played through the DLC cases, but they've been relatively enjoyable and pretty straightforward so long as you're aware of the trophies. The platinum (and 100%) may be possible for next week, but I've been struggling with feeling lightheaded over the weekend - I suspect due to getting used to a new glasses prescription - so it depends on how I'm feeling.. ? Alien Breed: Impact (PS3) - 5%Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood (PS3) - 44% L.A Noire (PS3) - 30% => 59% Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom (PS3) - 18% Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (PS3) - 7% *Two games can have a completion percentage of up to 50%, but the rest must be 33% or under. Finished FF8 as planned, and made it through Untitled Goose Game pretty quickly. I probably spent more time trying to get the Back Gardens Quickly trophy than all the others combined, but eventually it came together just right. Then I jumped between some PS3 games to see what would grab me, but I ultimately ended up going back to Assassin's Creed 2. It didn't take long to get back to where I was, and trophies are unlocking again so that's good. Hopefully the trophies won't bug this time, but I've been backing up my save regularly just in case. Still knocking out challenges and Origins paintings in Rayman Legends, but no trophy progress. Probably going to be that way for a couple more weeks and then a bunch will unlock at once. Then I'll just have the ongoing grind for level 11. I haven't played Gran Turismo Sport in almost two weeks now, that's going to hurt me in the long run. I need to get back to that, and FFXIV too, while there's still enough time left in the challenge. The Good Life: I had a couple of days off last week and I spent most of that time playing this game. It seems to be quite the slow burn. It's a game in which you have to keep track of pretty much everything needed to be grinded or else you're going to hate yourself and the game at the end. Good thing I have a very high tolerance for grind and RNG (another thing that's a factor in TGL). For next week this week: I don't know if I'll touch TGL much till the weekend. I'm playing Sonic Forces for the Fight Cancer Event but I've been really dragging my foot with it, plus the game hasn't clicked for me yet, but now I got to buckle down and focus on that a little bit before I run outatime. Popular Post KimBongUn420
Update #7 - Well, turns out Forza Horizon 5 launched in a hilariously broken state (online multiplayer basically doesn't work at all) so it went on the backburner this past week. On the plus side that meant I had more time to finally complete some games for this backlog challenge: Ghost Recon: Breakpoint - still no movement on this one; still have to finish up the multiplayer trophies and that's it. I really need to stop putting this off lol. 428: Shibuya Scramble - no movement this week. Will probably make a push to finish at the end of this month. Erica - finally done with this one thank god. A mediocre game that isn't worth your time. Ys IX - Nightmare run done and plat acquired. Said a lot about this one in the previous update - TL;DR it's a great JRPG and a must buy if it's on sale. LA Noire: no movement this week; am aiming to finish it up before Thanksgiving. Deathloop: Finished the story and am cleaning up leftover trophies for the platinum. Multiplayer seems to be impossibly broken on PS5 right now; I can't get a game after 30 minutes of waiting. Hopefully Arkane is working on a fix. Game has been really great otherwise. Subnautica [PS5] - I had played this already on PC but wanted to do it again on PS5 since I enjoyed it so much. Got almost 20 hours in before I realized trophies weren't unlocking the way they should, reloaded my save and managed to corrupt it somehow. So I decided I couldn't be bothered with it and did a 1hr speed run for the trophies. Not worth wasting my time fighting random glitches and bugs on a game I've already played before anyways. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Since I finally completed some games, I'm adding Far Cry 6 to the list. Shout out to my local GameStop who held on to my steelbook edition for an entire month after I forgot I preordered it. Probably will add WRC 9 later, probably won't add Ride 4 as I really hate it tbh ?. As always, happy hunting! Color Key: Green: Completed Game (This Update) (100% or Plat) Blue: Completed Game (Previous Updates) (100% or Plat) Orange: In-Progress Games (The percent change since last update is in parentheses) Purple: Newly-Added Games Black (Non-Bolded): No Change Since Last Update Swaps: 1/5 Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (Sept 7) Life is Strange 2 - 10% Erica - 75% -> (Nov 8) Fallout 4 - 15% Ghost Recon Breakpoint - 92% 428: Shibuya Scramble - 17% Dragon Quest XI S - (Oct 7) Beyond: Two Souls [PS4] - 4% Subnautica [PS5] - 0% -> (Nov 8) Deathloop - 24% -> 64% Ys IX: Monstrum Nox - 97% -> (Nov 3) LA Noire - 31% Far Cry 6 [PS5] - 0%

The Walking Dead: Final Season - 0% [IN] Yomawari: Midnight Shadows - 28% [OUT] Trials of Mana - 0% {NEW} Doki Doki Literature Club Plus - 0% Swaps: 2/5 I liked cleaning up Spirit of the North and I'm glad my opinion changed on it. Stopping yearning for it to handle better and be simpler definitely helped. It did feel like a lonely experience, as it was intended mind you, but in hindsight, not my preference. Give me buddies, people to talk to etc. Nice though, definitely magical and chilled. Currently smashing out requests to boost that bond xp in Persona 5 Strikers. I've heard of the post-game grind so I'm being as thorough as possible through my playthrough to try and offset it. I'm in love with the game though. It's just a great all round experience for me. The story, the slickness of the whole package, the feeling that you genuinely don't want it to end. I'm not sure when I'll finish it because I kinda want to eek it out over a month or 2 but I might end up wrapping it up in a couple of weeks. Not having a plan on when I'm finishing P5S is a bit strange since my next platinum will be my 100th. I'd earmarked for it to be P5S for a couple of months but then I found Yomawari: Midnight Shadows which I'm using as my 2nd swap. I stumbled across this around Halloween and it's fantastic! The monsters/spirits with their variations and sounds are terrifying first and foremost. The sense of finishing a chapter is NICE and the fact that there aren't any missable collectables is also nice. You're a young girl looking for your friend around town. If I was to put money on it, I'd say you're about 8 which makes you very fucking brave. I felt a flicker of Silent Hill walking down streets to the sounds of monsters, sometimes reaching dead ends, sometimes coming across something which makes you say nope and then u-turning. I showed a 10 second clip of that to a mate at work and he bought it on his break ? personally I only really see the 100th platinum as a name in lights and I really wouldn't mind if Yomawari: Midnight Shadows makes it there. It's definitely a night-time adventure and a chapter only takes around half an hour if you're not faffing around. Sometimes that's all I can really handle considering I fist pump every save point. Moderately buzzing about it as you can probably tell. Other bits...Doki Doki is a couple of quid off at the mo and I've heard enough that I'm more than intrigued. The remainder of my gift card deserves to go on it for sure. Trials of Mana had to make way as I haven't purchased it yet and a Black Friday Switch is taking precedence. Keen to start one of my 0%s now I'm off for a couple of days. Great to read from so many different people, nice to be part of it. Lots of banging game ideas as always. Hope everyone's doing well ? I'm working on wrapping up my 3rd playthrough of Symphonia, which is still in arc two but past the difficult parts. I managed to get both 'I hate Gels' and 'Gung Ho' in the same playthrough, so now I just need to get Regal's last title, reload that and get titles for Zelos and Sheena, and the item from Zelos, which will also finish off the Collector's book and net me Genis's title for that. Playthrough 4 will be focused on getting Genis for the Flanoir scene and the titles for him and Presea. Getting close!! Dark Souls III has taken up most of my time this last week with @TalesofGaming, and we are making good progress in that. Both of us just finished Profaned Capitol and Smouldering Lake. Lots of annoying invaders, especially in Irythill with usually 2 at a time, even when playing alone. I feel the same as her, the whole 'git gud' or 'don't play online' schpeel gets really annoying after awhile. I've played plenty, and will always hate the stress of having some invader who literally built their character to grief other players. Scared for Anor Londo for that, but hopefully we can push through there and deal with fewer indavers in the process.

Jeanolt
Hi! I would like to join the event even if it is a bit late. A quick question, does the 33% refer to the average completion of the game, or the platinum porcentage? If the game doesn't have a platinum, are we counting the hardest trophy? @MidnightDragon Edited November 12, 2021 by Jeanoltt

I sadly don’t have time for a longer update so going to squeeze one in while I wait for my delayed train to work. Had a bit of extra backpay this month so I did what all responsible adults do and put it in a savings account bought some games in the sales and tanked my completion percentage again. I’ve swapped a couple of them in and will explain why in the next update, think that brings me to 4 swaps this time for anyone keeping count. The rest I’ve added to the list. newly finished include: Tekken 7: After finally getting the online tournament win trophy on the 7th attempt due to some extreme lag and outrageous luck. AC Origins: Getting all the locations was a horrible pain. As for the DLCs, one good, one bad. Hades: Finished off grinding the keepsakes to reach my mileston 150th Platinum. Next update should hopefully be a bit more substantial. Plans currently are to finish RE8 while also plugging away at my new additions slowly. Popular Post freddie1989
Not a huge lot to update for me this time but it hasn't been long since the last one. Got Days Gone going again and popped a few on that. Such an awesome game still and one that never gets old. Likely start to bag more as the storylines come to an end. Quickly knocked out the prologue on Shadow of War last night to get the feel for it so looking forward to that. Popular Post YaManSmevz
Toasty War Journal #9 11/10/21 What it do, boo? It was a good week - had more of a chance to get to work on these games and finally I've been able to start puttin up some check marks! Damndest thing with Hitman - I finished all the opportunities for The Icon, and it didn't pop. I did them all again, making sure to organically overhear each opportunity before carrying them out, and still didn't get it. Then, when I was starting to get nervous that it just might never pop for me and I'll forever be at 99%, one of the opportunities was shown as incomplete. Strange, because it had been checked for quite some time! Anyway, I did it one more time, and that's when I finally got it. And now that that's that on that, Hitman 2 is on deck to either join the challenge or swap for somethin else. Can't believe I forgot how much I love those games! Hotline Miami was an absolute blast - granted, the last two chapters I needed for the Get A Life trophy were driving me nuts, but they're handled now, and once I take care of The Witness my Cancer Challenge games are complete! Ay, The Witness. I'm bizarrely anxious about those last two trophies?? Red Dead Revolver is cool, it's definitely a product of its time but it's a lot of fun, and i love how all in they went with the Western theme and presentation. It's no wonder they decided to keep the franchise around! I'm hoping to have this one done within the week, and then I can put my focus back on FFIX and Yakuza 0! As always, thanks for posting and thanks for reading! Keep grindin away, y'all?? 1. Resident Evil 5 (28-->31%) 2. Yakuza 0 (22%) 3. Hitman (99-->100%)✅ 4. Final Fantasy IX (8%) 5. You are making amazing progress with this! That Flanoir scene with Genis is actually surprisingly nice as well (although lets be real, most of those Flanoir scenes are pretty damn awesome - I don't exactly love Genis, but I did really enjoy that scene - so I hope that you do too.) I hope you have an awesome time with this game - especially now that they've pretty much taken all of the stuff out of the game that made people a little sour on it to begin with - I played Shadow of War about this time last year and I had a blast with it - the DLC is pretty awesome too if you're going to be going for that! 23 hours ago, YaManSmevz said: and then I can put my focus back on FFIX and Yakuza 0! WOOOOO! Hail to the Smevz! You've got this man - if my anxious twitchy self can do those one thousand jumps (and with a motorbike revving arse-biscuit neighbour distracting me) then you've got this in the bag..... Then you have an amazing Final Fantasy IX ahead of you! Not hat I'm biased or anything on that one ..... Oh and you have the rest of Yakuza 0 ahead too, those are some awesome games to keep you warm during winter! I could probably quote you all as you've got plenty of interesting things you're playing, but I do want to actually start Oxenfree tonight/this morning now! Anyway......... Thoughts on LEGO Movie 2: The Videogame. So....... You know I said that I felt like I had to go and watch the film before actually playing it? Well I did that...... It was - interesting I guess. It isn't really a patch on the first one, it's still got some of the same positive subtext to it, but it just doesn't quite fire on all cylinders. The live action sequences are really good though, and they actually really elevated the film rather a lot. Oh right this isn't a film review..... I forgot! My bad! Ahem......... Okay so you can basically ignore watching the film if you ever wanted to play this game, it barely follows the plot and it ends about 66% of the way through the film. It's essentially LEGO: Worlds with plenty of the assets from the original LEGO Movie game dragged into it - it's a fun enough time, but it really just lacks almost any kind of depth - so as a result what could have been a really interesting subversion of the LEGO game formula ends up being a little too bland - but it's enjoyable though. I could think of worse games to have in my backlog (gone now though ?). Oh and pink thumbnail too - so it is another Tennis Racket to the shins of Cancer - so that is probably the most positive thing to actually take away from my time with the game to be perfectly honest. If for some reason you wanted to read my full thoughts on this game you can find them here. Catch you all in the next one folks - when hopefully I'll have knocked out Oxenfree, and maybe made a bit more progress with Stranded Deep! Popular Post Bl4ckb1rd92
Update: A bit early in the week, and not much progress, but my weekend starts tomorrow and I need to make a swap. Dark Souls II - started at 50% --> currently at 82% Game planning with my buddy, we plan on going into NG+ as Sun Bros so we can rack up those medals and level 3 that covenant. During NG+ I'm going to have to pay attention to Benhart and Lucatiel so I can get their gear as well as trade the last 4 souls to Straid. Trying to get to a soul level of 8mil to super expedite for Chancellor Wellager in NG++, otherwise it's a mad dash/speed run to him to finish out for the plat. Spyro 2 - started at 19% --> 06SEP2021 Control - 13% --> Haven't touched it, yet. Plan is finished, I'll get to it eventually, maybe. FFVII - started at 10% --> currently at 15% Re-finished Cosmo Canyon and didn't pick it back up yet. After the last couple of set backs, I'm taking this one in small chunks until I get over it. Berserk - started at 4% --> currently at 67% I brought Schierke up to layer 61 start and missed a behelit (again) on floor 50~51. I also realized it doesn't make sense to keep this on my challenge list even though I could easily finish it within the time limit since I want to use it as milestone 175. So after 63 hours of play time, I will be swapping it out with Dark Cloud for some reminiscing and what I consider some light hack and slash in juxtaposition to Dark Souls. Fernz Gate - started at 1% --> Currently at 26% Progress halted when I started my power-leveling to 999 in the Metal Region. Currently at 923 with all characters. The rest are probably going to pop relatively quickly as I run through the rest of the bosses/arenas/dungeons and go loot-crazy to synthesize some monster weapons. TLDR; swapped out a game to give it a place of honor on my page, analyzed my avenue of approach with the monster on my list, and have been grinding like crazy with my game-on-the-go. Hope everyone is having a productive week; enjoying reading about people's discoveries and how they're overcoming obstacles on games. Been making notes for the games on my list of games that I maybe/might/possibly play some day in the near or distant future from some of the things being said.

Popular Post Heather342
Update 13 I haven't had as much time on the PlayStation this week, had a weekend break away. But since I've been back home I did manage to play more Demon's Souls and a little bit of Ghost of Tsushima. Demon's Souls I played with my gaming partner in crime @TheLordJusticar. This game was such a blast playing with friends, and acting as my bodyguard when my world kept getting invaded by other players, nuking everyone with a firestorm ?. We had some pretty good encounters, I think the best one was when we went up against The Old Monk invader, was a close match up that went down to the wire. Bluepoint did an absolutely fantastic job with the remake and I would highly recommend this game if you own a PS5. Managed to get this platinum today ? Not too much progress with Ghost of Tsushima. I'm still pretty early on in the single player campaign, but got 2 new trophies. One was a story progression trophy, and one combat trophy. I do need to get back to the multiplayer grind on this one, it will take a while to get all the classes to rank 20. I'll chip away at this until I'm ready to finish up Alien Isolation. Keep up all the great progress everyone ? Trophy progress: - Demon's Souls - 48 -> 100% - Ghost of Tsushima - 8 -> 10%

Max Payne 3 - 92% ===== #238 - Metro Exodus Like the previous Metro games before it, Exodus once again manages to offer one of the most immersive experiences I’ve ever had in a video game. It absolutely nails the relentlessly bleak and unforgiving atmosphere of the post-apocalyptic, radioactive rubble the survivors live in, and masterfully handles the tension and feeling of constant danger that hangs over your head while exploring the subterranean metro tunnels and bombed out ruins of Russia’s once great cities. It also excels at world building, pulling you in deeply to a truly fascinating world, and the colourful cast of characters and various factions that make up the network of survivors within. There is a staggering amount of optional dialogue to uncover for players who care to explore, and listening to their tales really helps fill out the lore and backstory of the world, and flesh out the characters and travel companions. It’s the kind of game where patient or inquisitive players are greatly rewarded for slowing down and just soaking in the world around them, and for paying attention to small details, reading through diary entries found in the world etc. The world of Metro is incredibly rich and detailed, which is part of what makes it so much more engrossing than most games. One aspect where Exodus differs greatly from 2033 and Last Light is in its setting and story. For the first time, the majority of the game actually takes place on the surface world, and not just outside the metro tunnels you’ve called home for 20 years, but outside Moscow itself. The game doesn’t completely cut ties with the linear format that worked so well in the previous games, but it does flirt with the concept, introducing a handful of missions set in large open-world sandboxes in a variety of unique settings. There are 3 main open world areas, the swampy Volga river settlements, the dried out deserts of the Caspian Sea, and the beautiful, lush forests of The Taiga. Each comes with its own unique personality and groups of inhabitants and offers a lot to see and explore. Funny enough, some of my favourite missions actually ended up being the “filler” missions set on the train. These segments usually happen every other mission or so, and are mainly there to help progress the story forward as your team gets briefed with the latest developments and objectives and whatnot. These “missions” can be as short as 5-10 minutes if you just get your briefs then proceed to the next mission right away, but for players like myself who like to explore, it’s easy to suddenly find yourself spending upwards of an hour wandering around the train and conversing with your travel companions. This will often lead to some surprisingly wholesome moments, like picking up the guitar and having a jam session with Stepan, sitting at the bar with the other guys and listening to them crack jokes, razz and mercilessly roast each other, or just simply cuddling up with your wife in your cabin as you dream together about a stable settlement and a better future together outside of the Metro. There is a whole lot of character development and personalities brought to life in these quiet moments between missions, and I really enjoyed getting to know them all. I must also note that the DLCs for this game were superb, particularly Sam’s Story, which I would say is easily one of the highest quality DLCs I’ve played. Some of you may know that I am not a big fan of DLC in general, but Sam’s Story is an example of exactly what a DLC should look like in my opinion. I found it to be even more compelling than the main story tbh. tl;dr All in all, Metro Exodus was an absolutely phenomenal game, and I am very sad to be finished with this brilliant series. I can’t wait for the next entry and to see what they decide to do next! ===== #240 - The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan In honour of this Halloween season, my brother and I decided to play through this one together. We are both big fans of horror and unexplained mysteries so this was an easy pick for us once we discovered it had co-op trophies. I had never heard of the real life mystery that inspired the game, so learning about that made the experience even more interesting! The real life legend is even crazier than the game. Supposedly in 1947 (barely 2 years after the end of WW2), a military vessel called the SS Ourang Medan sent out a very disturbing distress signal to surrounding ships in the Dutch East Indies. The message claimed that most of the crew and officers were dead, followed by some indecipherable morse code scribbling and the cryptic sign off, “I die.” When the first rescue vessel arrived a few hours later and found the ship unresponsive, they boarded the ship with a rescue party and found a horrifying scene - the entire crew was dead, their eyes open, arms outstretched and mouths curled into silent screams. There was no signs of foul play or any obvious cause of death that was immediately apparent. The rescue ship was ordered to tow the Ourang Medan back to port for further investigation, but before they were underway they noticed smoke billowing up from the hull and quickly retreated back to their own boat. Minutes later the Ourang Medan exploded and sunk right there at sea. Even stranger was the apparent fact that the ship’s logs had no clear indication of where it hailed from or where it was going. Whatever the Ourang Medan was up to and wherever it was headed, it seemed to be operating off the books, possibly involved in some kind of classified or top secret mission. It seems that the most popular theory on the internet is that the ship was possibly transporting some sort of confiscated biological/bacterial weapons materials from Unit 731 in Manchuria after the Japanese surrendered to the Americans. For those who don’t know, Unit 731 was a horrific, top-secret wartime facility where the Japanese carried out sickening weapons tests and medical experiments on POWs and kidnapped Chinese civilians, and were developing all kinds of biological, chemical, and bacterial weapons there. After the war, all that research would have been handed over to the Americans. If this theory was true, and some sort of leak or outbreak happened on the ship, it could explain the mysterious deaths of the Ourang Medan’s crew, and why they look like they died in agony despite no obvious signs of injury. It seems the developers liked this theory as well because their “Manchuria gold” concept was clearly in line with this idea! Crazy stuff, huh? Either way it sure made the game extra compelling and fun to play! tl;dr I thoroughly enjoyed the game and the characters. However, based on my experience with the trophy list I would HIGHLY recommend anyone going for this platinum follow the guide to a tee and save yourself unnecessary headaches. I did not, and ended up having to so 7 and-a-half playthroughs in the end due to glitched trophies, mistakes (the game saves instantly and has no checkpoint reload or chapter select until you finish the game, so a mistake can cost you an entire run), and various trophies/endings/collectibles conflicting with one another and requiring additional runs. Although I enjoyed the game itself, I was pretty burnt out on the trophy list by the end and getting pretty sick of playing it over and over again. I was glad to finish, but unfortunately a couple friends of mine noticed I was playing Man of Medan and reached out asking for help with the co-op stuff so it looks like I’m not entirely done just yet lmao. ?? One of these days… ===== #241 - Alan Wake Remastered As many of you have probably heard, Remedy’s beloved classic Alan Wake was remastered very recently. I never played the original, but a friend of mine recommended the game to me and after watching some footage and reviews and learning it takes place in the same universe as Control, I was extremely intrigued and rushed out to pick it up. It seemed like another great horror-mystery pick for Halloween. I was really expecting to love this one, but sadly I ended up having really mixed feelings about this game… On one hand I absolutely loved the cinematic-thriller elements and narrative style of the game. The atmosphere was creepy and brilliant, and the beautiful, foggy Pacific Northwest setting made for a fantastic mood throughout the game. It was also interesting having the protagonist be a writer, rather than the more typical hero or warrior that you’d see in most games. So what was the problem exactly? The answer is simple and all boils down to one element - the combat. Unfortunately, for all its strengths and unique elements, Alan Wake features one of the most tedious and frustrating combat systems I’ve ever encountered in a game. The combat system is rather basic, with repetitive encounters that consist of using a flashlight to burn off “the darkness” which is basically an enemy’s shield, and then shooting them with guns to kill them off. There is really no enemy variety at all, with your standard enemy and brute, and later in the game you have possessed objects like cars and tables and chairs flinging themselves at you at 100/mph, and this same scenario repeats itself hundreds of time throughout the game. Running through encounters is easier said than done, as Alan Wake’s stamina is absolutely horrendous, allowing for only a few seconds of sprinting at a time before he is completely winded. He runs incredibly slow, and all the enemies move about 3x faster than you by default making running away a difficult endeavour. The enemy spawns are also completely ridiculous, constantly appearing directly behind you or on your flanks without making a sound, making it difficult to focus on shining your light or shoot at anyone for more than a couple seconds at a time before some guy is burying an axe in the back of your skull. They also throw nonstop axe projectiles at you from all angles with pinpoint accuracy. It’s very impressive how all of these dudes seemingly appear to share a claim to the lumberjack axe-throwing world championship title. Worst of all is the dodge mechanic. The game wants you to master the dodge mechanic (which is incredibly useful when it works, and basically a must for Nightmare difficulty), but the dodge controls are horrendous. Rather than mapping dodge to a single button like most games, dodging consists of holding L1 (also the run button) + moving the analog stick in a direction. Sounds simple enough, but half the time it just doesn’t work because you’re already in motion or using the same button to run, as well as trying to use L2 & R2 for your flashlight and guns. In short, the controls feels super awkward and clunky and lack any kind of precision which is sorely needed. Now in most games like this that are more narrative focused, or have survival-horror elements, the narrative would be broken up by lots of puzzles, platforming, or things to explore and do. The problem here is that Alan Wake has almost nothing like this at all when it comes to gameplay. Alan Wake goes ALL IN, all chips on the table regarding the combat system, leaning entirely on these frustrating combat encounters and running (I use that word lightly) through spooky forests while being mobbed and relentlessly pursued by groups of enemies between narrative segments. And sadly when your combat sucks as much as Alan Wake’s does, it really ends up feeling like an anchor weighing down the overall experience. I can’t remember ever playing a game where I literally felt a wave of relief every time a combat encounter would end. It just wasn’t fun at all, in any way. Furthermore, Alan Wake has some annoying trophies to compound that frustration. The majority of the list isn’t too bad, but the game does force you to find around 350 collectibles in total which is excessive, and also features a handful of trophies for completing entire levels in a time limit, or without dying/reloading checkpoints at all. The no-death trophy in The Signal DLC was particularly annoying as I experienced the commonly reported crashing bug where the game inexplicably crashes about halfway through your runs on repeat playthroughs. I wasted an entire day on that trophy alone, just trying various solutions to fix the bug or getting killed by stupid shit. tl;dr All in all, Alan Wake was an interesting game that tried some unique things and I definitely appreciated that. I wanted to like this game so badly, and I feel shitty for disliking it. But it’s just a shame that it relied so much on a combat system that was so janky and frustrating. It sucked a lot of the fun out of the experience for me. ☹️ The good news is that Remedy has clearly evolved since this game first came out, because I have played Control and the combat in that game was pretty fkin awesome. I’m looking forward to seeing what their next entry in this Alan Wake/Control universe might look like. ===== - Added Batman: Arkham Asylum to my PS3 list because why not. - Currently started working on Resident Evil 2 (it’s incredible so far!), and plan to start working on Celeste next as well. It’s going to be tight, but I want to try and finish them before the end of the month as these will be my last Pink & Orange games entered into the Trophies to Fight Cancer (Event). If you haven’t done any games for that event yet, there’s still time! It runs until the end of the month and it’s for a great cause. PS - Keep up the great work everyone! As always, I enjoy lurking in here and reading everyone’s posts and keeping up with the community progress. ??
