Another Rarity Leaderboard thread: Leaderboard that only includes games with under 75% platinum rates

I think the idea itself is great, I'd be all for it even if I don't care about being on the leaderboards myself. Depending on the way it's implemented it could also help with the extremely easy hour plat infestation that we have.

I do realize how much of a 1st world problem anything like this is, I just miss the days when you could look at someone's profile, see their platinum count alone and be impressed at how many games they managed to complete. Unlike now, where you see somebody with 1000 platinums and instead of being intrigued by it, you scroll down their profile and see that all they managed to do was throw money at the same game 5 times just to see the shiny number go higher with minimal effort. Then you come to the forums and see their reasoning of "I got so tired and fed up with the grind for Shoot the Awesome gun 8, I just wanted to relax and get some trophies" after which they stack the same 1 hour game multiple times. If the hobby isn't fun anymore, why force? But I digress...

I've seen multiple people here mention @HusKy and from what I've seen of his work I'd support him. Gotta have my fellow Slovak's back for the great work he's done with PSNP+ alone.

I 100% agree with you.

You could definitely find a way to include the difficulty criteria into the leader board.

The best solution would be imo :

1-Distributing points weighted on the rarity for each trophy. (like Sony does distinguish, ultra rare, rare, uncommon etc).

2- Excluding also some games which are super easy to plat where the time to plat average is below 2h, or where more than 90/95% of the players got the platinum.

Have there been any progress made on that so far ?

Have a good game anyway :D

Who would be making the determinations of which games are rare because of difficulty, and which are rare due to other factors?

(Low ownership / Price / PS+ status / Quality / glitches / subsequent patches / grind / time to platinum / co-op requirement / online requirement / closed servers /autopops  / console upgrade versions / age / availability / VR compatability / peripheral requirements / multiplayer requirements … to name but a few)

Deciding difficulty on a site-wide scale would be a massive, labour intensive and highly specialised task that would need to be conducted and maintained across every single game tracked, past, present and future - and would require a huge team - to determine, maintain, deal with disputes, etc.

You are talking about potentially hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of man-hours…

…and the only thanks the poor buggers doing it would get is an almost inevitable tsunami of dissent, disagreement and attacks from people who don’t agree with their determinations.

Personally, I just can’t see how it could be made feasible.

I disagree, there are simple ideas that are not incredibly hard to set up. + you could imagine a system in which the players would decide their criteria of rarity. (% of rarity, time to platinum based on the average, no auto-popping, etc). it wouldn't be hundreds of hours if you sticked to simple things, believe me. This already exists, as there are some rankings per country and per platform. :)

This gave me an idea for another leaderboard: DLC counts for points for percentage completion, but displays no rarity at all and wouldn't count for rarity points. Since no one has the correct owner data for DLC, assigning it any rarity value will always be flawed (some more, some less) and ignoring a rarity value for DLC might make for some interesting outcomes.

If DLC is counting for completion its rarity should be calculated by the same owner count as the main game. It doesn't make sense someone can have 90% completion, and all they're missing is a DLC trophy that has 100% attainment rate (clearly it's not a 100% trophy, this person doesn't have it, regardless of whether they've bought the DLC, they have the list on their profile and don't have that trophy). Ideally I'd say even the owner counts of extra trophy lists for games should also take their owner count from the main game, if that were even possible.

Another thing with trophy rarity in general that should be fixed for a rarity leaderboard to even make sense is that rarity should probably be calculated across stacks instead of independently. It's not fair that an American gamer gets, say, 200 rarity points for their NA stack, and a Japanese gamer gets only, say, 30 rarity points for the same trophies, but it's the AS stack which in many cases are skewed to much higher averages.

I like to watch my stats game by game and see which game how much points costs in rarity leaderboard. Lately my rarity leaderboard points haven't changed even if i completed some rare games recently. I had this before but it started to increase somehow don't remember clearly. If i am not wrong this time, it should have been changed a little but it hasn't.
