Holiday Connect 4 (Event Paused / Currently Closed)

Recommended Posts

2 games down as well (seems to be a trend?). I'll try to give my thoughts on the completed games throughout the event.

For International Ninja Day, I went through The Last Blade 2. A port of a 1998 fighting game by SNK available through PSNow. Overall, it's a pretty generic fighter set in feudal Japan with characters based on a lot of known archetypes (samurai, ninjas, shrine priests, etc.) Nothing really remarkable.  Even though it's a pretty easy completion, I had a weird time going in this game as the controls felt really clunky? I'm not sure if it's because I'm not that great at fighting games (I mostly mash/simple combos), but the controls were really stiff and moves didn't feel like they had a through line. Still, the whole game is doable on the easiest difficulty and the secret boss character will help with the no continue run. If you have PSNow, it'll take 2-3 hours of your time. Meh recommendation.

For World Sight Day, I went out on a limb based only on the title and acquired The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince. This is a pretty small scale puzzle platformer released by NIS. This is a really charming game and caught me off-guard. Since It's a pretty unknown game (only ~4000 owners), I'll go further on it.

The story is about a monstrous wolf that lives in the forest and sings at the moon. One day, she's heard by a human prince and, scared by him, blinds him. Hearing that the prince lost his place in the kingdom due to the accident, she breaks him out of his jail. However, due to the trauma, he's terrified of her. To get close to him, she makes a deal with a witch in the woods which gives her the ability to transform into a human princess at the cost of her voice. Seeing that the witch can help out with all kinds of wishes, she goes back to the prince under a false identity and decides to escort him to that witch in order to gain back his sight.

That's the opening story. The whole game is a 2D platformer where you're escorting the blind prince by literally holding him by the hand through the levels. I know this sounds awful (A whole game that's an escort mission? Eugh.), but it makes a lot of sense in context and works pretty well. You will move both of the main characters through dangerous locales and monsters which can be fought with your wolf transformation, but you need to be in your human form to move the prince forward. It has a really good give and take mentality of letting you explore to solve puzzles in your wolf form which can jump super high, slash at enemies and doesn't take fall damage, but you need to keep in mind that the humans also need to go there as well and leads to good levels. Visually, it's pretty striking; it has a really neat storybook look to it (both in the cutscenes and the main gameplay). As far as the trophies are concerned, 5-6 collectables for each of the ~20 levels (which open out what are probably my favorite concept art ever? as they're character briefs and design notes! That's so rare to see) and a couple of pacifist/speedrun levels (only 1 of them being really annoying). Total time: 6-8 hours. Super recommendation!

I didn't expect to write that much about that game, but I needed to vent somewhere.

As with most people here, I also joined the other charity donation event, so my next games will try to fit there; I will probably go with Beyond and Firefighters. We'll see how they go later.

Sadie Hawkins day. So any game where gender roles are reversed somehow.

Thanks for the suggestion. Would you think TWD: A New Frontier (Clementine being a badass girl) or Rise of the Tomb Raider ( being more physical, adventurous) would fit the suggestion you had in mind? I'm kind of having some difficulty finding games I can easily identify with the gender role reversal, if not these would like some ideas ?

It took me a minute to figure one for myself since that holiday is one of my squares. I chose Mary Skelter , since it has women be the front line fighters and the lone male is just a support role.

The true meaning of the holiday is about women asking men for dates. So if want to go more literal there are plenty of VN that fit that bill.

Two more games down! Let's find a spot for them.

First up, we have Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk DX. I don't know where this one belongs. I guess I have that Asia holiday category. Is there a Japanese day for Japanese games being Japanese? Because my physical disc version was Japanese only. And it doesn't get more Japanese than an Atelier game. I'm just going to go with White Day (March 14) because, like...it's an Atelier game...so I'm sure they were making good use of that "T for suggestive themes" rating.

Second game is Ghost of a Tale. I'm really tempted to put this under National Dress Up Your Pet Day (January 24), but there are other games where you play as an animal who wears clothes, so let's go with Go Caroling Day (December 20). In the game, you play as Tilo, who is a minstrel. And he plays songs. Like, literally, that's his only skill.

Nothing says Christmas like a mouse singing on your doorstep.

After trying for ages to make a non-cancerous looking visual for this event... I can't do it. Just going to type this out instead and see if I can figure out something better looking a little later. Anyway, first game complete! After taking a look at the holidays, I'm going to try and keep my options open as I complete games for them. Don't want to list too much out when I'm not sure what I'll be playing quite yet.

Did you know? In Europe, International Bat Night is every year on August 27th! It helps celebrate all the good bats can do, like eat bugs and protect the ecosystem, and help get rid of the stigma that they're all foul vermin. Now, I don't know if Batman is really helping the stereotype there, but there ARE a lot of bats in that game, and I had a lot of fun playing it! Hopefully the next completion will be a little bit prettier, but if I have to I can keep using this system for a while. Good luck everyone!

Got my 3rd completion for the event with Firefighters: The Simulation. If I sum up this game in one word, it would be Dull. The main idea of the game being a firefighting simulator is only okay; some variety of vehicles and tasks at the accidents. On the other hand, this gamegame is a decently sized grindfest. The icing on that is the long stretches of nothing you have between the random missions. I know they're to fill up you gas tank/clean the truck, but, on an average 25 minute day, you will probably spend half of that time just waiting. Also, the final 2 ranks of the game requires you to get 5000 and 10000 total points. On average, you will get 4-5 missions a day and the maximum amount of points you can get per mission is... 500. If you're morbidly curious, it's on PSNOW, but this is an avoid game otherwise.

I remember having a lot of fun playing through the main game, but dropped it at the challenges. How hard were they for you and do you have tips?

Really not hard at all. There's only 8 of each kind, far less than the future titles, and no campaigns either. The predator ones are super easy. Just watch a video of what to do and loosely follow it: remember that you don't need to be as perfect as the video. The combat ones are moderately difficult, but as long as you include the weird stuff like throws, batarangs, and batclaws in your combos, you should be fine. Just be prepared to try them each a fair few times. I got them all in one afternoon.

First game finally done!

December 20th: International Human Solidarity Day - Afterparty

Human Solidarity Day is about celebrating unity in diversity, so I wanted to play a game where people of color were the main characters. Both main characters for this game are people of color, one is of Asian heritage and one is African American! If you're into narrative based games, than Afterparty is a fun time! I also recommend the other Nightschool Studios game, Oxenfree!

Another three down.

World Freedom Day (Nov. 9) - Assassin’s Creed Origins

World Freedom Day is a U.S. holiday created by President George W. Bush to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall. AC Origins fits with the holiday’s overall theme with its heavy emphasis on the liberation of “the people” from the ever-present, conspiratorial Order of the Ancients.

Dress Up Your Pet Day (Jan. 14) - Scheming Through The Zombie Apocalypse: The Beginning

What better way to observe Dress Up Your Pet Day than with a quick (but not too quick) Ratalaika game starring a politically-incorrect rabbit and drug-dealing dog?

National Science Fiction Day (Holiday celebrated in my country) - Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart celebrates National Science Fiction Day with its inclusion of parallel dimensions, intergalactic space travel, and worlds inhabited by E.T.s and cognizant robots.

Hi, everyone not an update really, I just wanted to post the square thing with games selected so I can follow what games I should do in what order... I haven't started since I was in the Halloween event (Which I have failed :( ) Anyway ready to do some of the games up in here, so at least we can have some donations here and there :P .

Anyway the ones that are blank are because I choose multiple games for that specific Holiday, so I will pick the one that I am going to use later since it all depends in time.

Well, it's time to start this event, starting with my first completion:

Have another player recommend you a Holiday ( Sadie Hawkins day )

Use a Holiday celebrated in the Spring or Summer

Use a Holiday primarily celebrated in Noth or South America

3

December

On November 8th, the National S.T.E.M or S.T.E.A.M. day inspires kids to explore and pursue their interests in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. So for this holiday, I decided to go for a short game that tries to give us a view about game development.

October update!

Spoiler

4dO29Uy.png

I had a productive month, finishing Nexomon Extinction (October 31 - Halloween), Obduction (October 12 - Moment of Frustration Day), Raji: An Ancient Epic (November 14 - Children's Day [India]), Bug Fables (December 27 - Make Cut-out Snowflakes Day), Tales of Arise (December 20 - International Human Solidarity Day), and Glass Masquerade (January 29 - Puzzle Day). One line down, nine more to go!

The list I made out when I signed up seems to be going well so far, so I'll probably keep sticking with it. But since I left a few blanks:

January 16 - Appreciate a Dragon Day: I'll do Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars for this one, since it features a dragon prominently enough in the title.

Recommendation - Canada Day: I was waiting for Backbone to release on PS4, since it's set in Vancouver, but it seems like there's some kind of issue (glitch or otherwise) with one of its trophies, so the plat might be off the table for now. A Short Hike, my backup, is set in a Canadian national park, but still doesn't have a release date beyond "Fall 2021." I'm hoping at least one of those two will be doable by the end of the event.

January 24 - Global Belly Laugh Day: I'll be honest, I still have nothing for this one. It's also National Compliment Day, but I'm not sure how much that actually helps. If anyone has a suggestion for either of those holidays I'd love to hear them!

An update for the end of October!

Did you know? Howl at the Moon Night celebrates the animal that howls at the moon the most (in popular culture anyway): the wolf! And Savage Halloween happens to star not just a wolf, but a WEREwolf! Granted, this werewolf is the other way around than you would normally expect one to work, it's a cute little puppy that turns into a hulking beast, but it still counts! If anything, I think that makes it count more. It does kill me that I didn't have October 31st on this list to perfectly count for this game's namesake, but I think this one is a nice compromise.

Did you know? Braai Day is a holiday in South Africa celebrated on September 24th, where the whole nation celebrates their cultural heritage by going out and grilling some meat! This one fit really well for me during the research, because the article's name got me: "Braai Day: The Holiday of Meat That Brings South Africans Together". This might not sound like much, but when it comes to Carrion, I can think of of one large piece of meat that happens to bring people together... just not so much in the way that Braai Day I think is meant to be celebration. The monster even gets cooked if you stand in the way of flamethrowers! Let me know if you think this one doesn't count, but I think it's perfect.

Three down, more to go! Can't wait to see where this goes.

I have an update! I'm subbing in another game for a category, I wasn't sure if that's allowed for this event? I don't see a rule against it, but I'm asking just in case!

November 1st: National Author's Day - The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

The way this fits into the category is that you find little stories that the titular Ethan Carter wrote throughout the story. There's also another way this ties into the game, but that treads into spoiler territory, so I won't go there!

One more completion for this event.

Used Donut County for 20th January, Get to Know Your customer. In this game there is a high demand for donuts, and RK, the racoon, delivers the donuts to his costumers (Not the ones the costumers expected). After he joins the costumers to solve the problems, so I guess it fits with the category of getting to know the costumers.

First Update:

Finished 3 games.

First: STATE OF MIND

Holiday October 23: Make a difference day

The premise is that you are a journalist, and you have amnesia, but have the feeling that the goverment and the biggest company in the world are into something, technology is at is peak and the world is a mess, you are looking for your wife and your son and uncover a conspiracy and you need to take it down for it to save your son and wife. So he is basically alone in this, that's why it fits the "make a difference" Holiday.

Is a very story focus game, similar to all those Telltale games and stuff like that with a little less linearity, more open world, more up to you to make some progress.

Second: Battle Chef Brigade

Holiday: December 30 Bacon Day

This one doesn't have a platinum, still is a pretty hard 100% list. Basically you compete to be the best Battle Chef, now a battle chef is a cook that also hunts monster to get the food, so the gameplay is normal sidescroller in order to battle the monsters and the chef part is similar to bejeweled, now the thing is, the game puts you a task to make dishes from a certain monster and it need to have a certain flavour (earth, fire or water, sometimes a combo of any of those) so you have to make sure to have at least one ingredient of the monster, and the flavour that they ask, now sometimes the monster doesn't have the flavour that you are asked, so you need to combine with other stuff in order to make it, this is all with a time limit and more harder challenges each time you make progress. Loved this game, glad I picked it up.

Third: Candle- the power of the flame.

Holiday Celebrated primarily in Africa: Traditional Day

This is a Point and Click game, the story is around character that look like Voodoo dolls or stuff like Tiki culture, and yeah well you need to save your people including the shamans that were kidnapped by others, you use candles in order to solve puzzles and beat the enemies, this is a super beatiful game, I looked it up and it seems like the devs made everything hand drawn, so yeah, it really looks good, I really recommend this game if you are into Points and click games, the art style itself is worth a try, but the story is good, very wholesome.

Havent updated in a while due to some busy work times but I come with two full lines after some changes to my games list.

Day of the Dead was filled in with Death Stranding. Absolutely about remembering the spirits of those passed on and coming back.

Book Lovers Day has been filled in with Educational Games for Kids, Kids love books, kids gotta learn to read those books. And the World Atlas is a big old book I had to look at a bunch while trying to platinum this game.

Bounty Day is now completed with Far Cry 6. The spirit of piracy (or more like privateers) is alive with the guerrillas of Yara.

Walking Dead and Doctor Dekkar completed as posted before.

New Update.

First line done! Not the easiest one but not the hardest either.

Game: COD MW Remastered.

Holiday: November 11: Veteran's Day

We all know this game, is just the same, including the enraging Veteran difficulty of old COD games that spam grenades and headshots from enemies that are not even looking at you, after some days of screaming at the screen because of at least 5 levels where is just unfair difficulty and you have to retry and retry until you get kinda lucky, I got the platinum, only 2 trophies are really going to test you really, this is a very doable platinum, unless you lack the patience to do it. Of course it fits the Holiday, lol.

Game: Everything.

Holiday: December 27 Make Cut Out Snowflakes Day

Existentialism the game, this is a super philosophical yet relaxing yet depressing game about how everything around us including ourselves are just insignificant as an individual, and all our problems are nonsense, but at the same time everything is also very important from a galaxy to a snowflake ;) , very unique, very relaxing game. (PS: the Platinum is a snowflake)

Game: Leisure Suit Larry Wet Dream Don't Dry.

Holiday: January 24: Beer Can Appreciation Day.

Funny point and click, is basically a parody of our life in this era, So basically Larry time travels by accident, from the first game (the one on the 80´s) to probably 2018 or something like that, so what does a horny 30 year old maybe 40 virgin react to the new way to date people, interact with people, and recognize popularity by just likes and followers, again this game and I guess the sequel is meant to mock everything and be basically a comedy, which I think it works. Yeah you start the game in a bar and the first thing you do is drink a beer...so yeah, good choice there.

Game: Grim Fandango

Holiday: Holiday Celebrated in México: Día de los Muertos.

Is a perfect fit, not only is the protagonist Mexican, the game happens in 4 years, every día de los muertos, so you don't see a lot of people because they are visiting the Living World. Is a very funny game, super oldschool game, point and click that I would advise to play with a guide because I don't how people managed to even finish the first year without one.

Nothing else to update, I'll update when I complete another line.

Posting my November update a few days early, as I'll be completely busy for the next week and a half:

Spoiler

38XqFt7.png

+5 games and +2 rows this month, making great progress! I ended up going with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart for Global Belly Laugh Day on January 24, and everything else continued as planned: Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Thanksgiving - November 25), Returnal (Finnish Independence Day - December 6), Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars (Appreciate a Dragon Day - January 16), and A Short Hike (Canada Day - player recommended).

Only 5 games left on the calendar: Kentucky Route Zero, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Spiritfarer, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5. Despite making good time, those last two might stand between me and a clean sweep-- I'm working on the Korean stacks, and I don't speak a word of it.

I'm back with another update!

October 2nd: International Day of Non-Violence - A Short Hike

October 16th: Global Cat Day - Granblue Fantasy: Versus

A Short Hike is about climbing to the top of a mountain, which requires a lot of platforming and flying... But no violence! So this works for the International Day of Non-Violence.

As for Global Cat Day... The character Vyrn from Granblue Fantasy: Versus looks like a cat that can fly/hover to me! So I hope I can count this lol

Spoiler

Holiday Primarily Celebrated in Europe: National Day of Greece (3/25)

October 16th: Global Cat Day - Granblue Fantasy: Versus

October 31st: Halloween - The Walking Dead: Definitive Edition

October 2nd: International Day of Non-Violence - A Short Hike

Holiday Primarily Celebrated in Australia: Australia Day (1/26)
