As an avid MH player with zero MH plats and a CLEAR expert, I decided to share my scientific formula to the interwebs on how to choose your weapon in this game based on personality and playstyle. This has only been revealed to a select few and after VERY POSITIVE FEEDBACK, I decided to share it with my fellow PSNPals!

 

Without further ado, here is how you pick your MHW main... 100% legit. 100% serious. A total scientific approach that will delve into the innards of your mind!

I've actually been playing a ton of MHR on the switch lately trying out different weapons. I'm a CB main on rise, but I think I'm going to go Switch Axe once I try MHW. It's just so much fun to jump on an enemy and stab them to death. Haha.

The melee weapons all felt terrible to me when I started MHW. Attempted the greatsword first because I am usually the kind of guy who runs around with the big weapon that really hurts with every hit, thought it was terrible. Tried the hammer, felt like that was even worse with its hilariously small range. Tried a few more, disliked pretty much all of them, Longsword being the least shitty. Then I went with ranged, but I was too lazy to keep track of all the different ammo types so I got the bow, which has coatings but they were of questionable impact in the base game so I just blew my power coatings and then used normal shots. Bow got me through the entire base game, making tempered enemies a big pain in my ass because ranged players get far more damage done to them even with similar armor, pretty much every hit from a tempered monster meant either instant death or follow up death due to stun or the monster doing a good old combo.

 

Then I returned for Iceborne, kept using the bow but it was just so much worse with the speed and range of the enemies, and the disgusting damage sponging that was going on dragging out the hunts. Decided I would go melee to not get oneshot killed all the time by the quick monsters, was doing decently well and I used the bow for slow monsters and the longsword for the monsters that were on meth. Then I found it, the salvation. I discovered a guide that explained how to use the Insect Glaive as a main weapon, but abusing it was a ranged weapon, fighting with the insect only, basically turning you into a ranged hunter that had the protection of a melee hunter. Almost nothing had any influence on the damage done by the insect so I could go full beefy build with the same damage. This really improved the long grinding part of the game for be, while I was not able to have the insane killing times that some specialists had with their dual blades or greatswords, I could somewhat casually kill tempered monsters without getting killed all the time, I even killed Tempered Furious Rajang a few times without much effort, dmg was not comparable to absolute peak builds but still more than most people were able to do.

Charge Blade. I just like the weight behind it and it's dual purposes. Morphing.

 

2nd would be long sword or just sword an shield. Hate ranged as you still have to be fairly close imo.

 

Can't wait to see what MH looks like on ps5, ray tracing, Tigrex and Ratha in even more stunning graphics. Yes.

I don't know why, but I've used the hammer since the beginning and I haven't tried anything else. My problem is I simply cannot force myself to try a different weapon. I love the hammer SO much! I'm currently hammering my way through Iceborne.

Well according to that I should pick Long (weeb) sword or Dual swords which, funny enough, was what I started out with when I tried out MHW first… but ended up having Insect Glaive as my main later on… Dual Swords were just too close and Long Sword was a bit too slow  but pressing buttons and looking cool is a very good reason why I mostly use Insect Glaive now
