There’s a popular war video game out there that not only allows players to shoot hundreds upon hundreds of human characters but it also features the horrific and brutal snuffing out of a small and innocent life. Yes, in Electronic Arts’ recently released Battlefield 3, players can kill a virtual rat. Man, I’m emotionally drained after writing that so I’ll just let the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals take the reins. Via German press release, PETA said: “The realistic computer game “Battlefield 3″ treats animals in a sadistic manner. The game gives players the option to kill a rat with a combat knife in the back in order to then lift it by its tail, then toss it away. Killing virtual animals can have a brutalizing effect on the young male target audience. There have been repeated cases of animal cruelty in Germany, where young people kill animals. There's a different knife scene late in the game where you slowly press a knife into a guys throat, you can hear him moaning whilst doing so. Protecting them from things they don't need protecting from... like popular media. Some members might have good intentions but most of PETA come across as attention-seeking and preachy. The SPCA (from what I know) just house, feed and take care of abandoned/abused animals until... hopefully... they find a nice home and family to live with. I know a ton of people that have gotten their pets from the SPCA. Could be more to it than that, but as it stands I have a lot more respect for the SPCA than PETA. The SPCA is the Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals...basically a watchdog group who ensures that (mostly) companion animals (pets) are treated as humanly as possible. The SPCA are the folks behind most low-cost and free neutering/spaying programs, local animal shelters, etc., etc. Basically they make sure that laws protecting animals from cruelty are followed by pet owners and those selling companion animals and what not. PETA are People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. These folks, although their core message is similar to the SPCA, PETA are radical abolitionists who put the life and value of an animal far ahead of humans. These radicals have been known to assault, commit arson, and a few PETA members have even murdered other humans in the name of animal protection. To put it in perspective, think of the SCPA as the Police, and PETA as a blend of the SS and Al Queda. I really want to know what PETA does if the Bubonic plague comes back to haunt us. What they take issue with is that they think video games that feature such acts, like the killing of this rat, can inspire gamers to commit such acts in real life. However there have been quite a number of studies that examine the effect video games have on those that play them, and the majority of the results came back inconclusive. This press release has been based on ignorance, not science. Saying that, I do believe there is significance in the fact that this press release was released by the German branch of PETA. Germany has a history of censorship towards video games. Thats funny... all RPGs are infested with rats, lol... I remember killing probably around 10,000 rats in Sacred 2... there are a ton of rats in Dark Souls depths too... I'm from Baltimore (and I'm sure most urban downtown areas are like this across the country) where the rats downtown are the size of small cats. I'm not a huge supporter of PETA as they tend to be over dramatic in almost all animal related news. Who cares you can kill a rat in a game? I skinned hundreds of animals and slaughtered a whole race of species in Red Dead Redemption but it doesn't me me want me to go out and kill animals. Erghhhh.... I'm surprised they didn't go apeshit when Duke Nukem stomped rats, squished rats in his hands or even put a rat in a microwave.
