(Idiots among us) PETA Upset Over Battlefield 3 Rat Backstab

You might want to sit down for this.

There’s a popular war video game out there that not only allows players to shoot hundreds upon hundreds of human characters but it also features the horrific and brutal snuffing out of a small and innocent life.

Yes, in Electronic Arts’ recently released Battlefield 3, players can kill a virtual rat.

Man, I’m emotionally drained after writing that so I’ll just let the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals take the reins. Via German press release, PETA said:

“The realistic computer game “Battlefield 3″ treats animals in a sadistic manner. The game gives players the option to kill a rat with a combat knife in the back in order to then lift it by its tail, then toss it away. Killing virtual animals can have a brutalizing effect on the young male target audience. There have been repeated cases of animal cruelty in Germany, where young people kill animals. Inspiration behind these acts often came from movies and computer games.”

All I can say is "Wow".

Dear god, it's a friggin sewer rat, everyone hates those anyway.

There's a different knife scene late in the game where you slowly press a knife into a guys throat, you can hear him moaning whilst doing so. So, PETA are okay with this but not with killing a disgusting sewer rat?

Pretty sure death by summoned fireball/iceball/sword/orc/whatever the hell else these games let you summon is far more sadistic than stabbing it.

And far less realistic, I guess. :P

Who cares what PETA thinks? They haven't been relevant in years and don't look to be anytime soon with their recent "causes". My favorite is still the PETA porn site.

hell if i know, never heard of PETA until i saw this

PETA are just folks with an unhealthy obsession with animals, bordering on bestiality I'm sure. Protecting them from things they don't need protecting from... like popular media. Some members might have good intentions but most of PETA come across as attention-seeking and preachy.

The SPCA (from what I know) just house, feed and take care of abandoned/abused animals until... hopefully... they find a nice home and family to live with. I know a ton of people that have gotten their pets from the SPCA. Could be more to it than that, but as it stands I have a lot more respect for the SPCA than PETA. :P

I don't think the SPCA and PETA are the same thing?

Oh Lord no!

The SPCA is the Society to Prevent Cruelty to Animals...basically a watchdog group who ensures that (mostly) companion animals (pets) are treated as humanly as possible. The SPCA are the folks behind most low-cost and free neutering/spaying programs, local animal shelters, etc., etc. Basically they make sure that laws protecting animals from cruelty are followed by pet owners and those selling companion animals and what not.

PETA are People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. These folks, although their core message is similar to the SPCA, PETA are radical abolitionists who put the life and value of an animal far ahead of humans. These radicals have been known to assault, commit arson, and a few PETA members have even murdered other humans in the name of animal protection.

To put it in perspective, think of the SCPA as the Police, and PETA as a blend of the SS and Al Queda.

I really want to know what PETA does if the Bubonic plague comes back to haunt us.

That's easy, they'd want to protect the fleas spreading the virus.

I don't think PETA is objecting to the killing of the rat in itself, as they euthanize a lot of the animals they take in. What they take issue with is that they think video games that feature such acts, like the killing of this rat, can inspire gamers to commit such acts in real life. However there have been quite a number of studies that examine the effect video games have on those that play them, and the majority of the results came back inconclusive. This press release has been based on ignorance, not science.

Saying that, I do believe there is significance in the fact that this press release was released by the German branch of PETA. Germany has a history of censorship towards video games. Just look here:

http://en.wikipedia....Selbstkontrolle

In the German gaming community, the USK is very unpopular and often accused of censorship, since games that are refused classification may be listed on the List of media harmful to young people (colloquially known as the “Index”) by the Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien (BPjM). This process is known as “indexing”, upon which the titles may only be sold on request to adults over the age of 18, and are not to be advertised in retail stores or any other media. It is forbidden to supply them to minors. Hence, games with a USK 18 rating are not necessarily uncut, due to distributors striving for a rating. For example, the German version of Grand Theft Auto III does not feature headshots and is less gory, as well as having some weapons or their special effects removed. Some publishers like Microsoft choose not to cut their games (e.g. Gears of War) for a rating and do not release these games in Germany at all.

This press release was clearly created to take advantage of this, creating public pressure to censor the game. PETA may be many things, but they know how to manipulate peoples emotions for their own gain.

What about all the rats we've killed in COUNTLESS action RPG's? Pretty sure death by summoned fireball/iceball/sword/orc/whatever the hell else these games let you summon is far more sadistic than stabbing it.

Thats funny... all RPGs are infested with rats, lol... I remember killing probably around 10,000 rats in Sacred 2... there are a ton of rats in Dark Souls depths too...

I think you gotta scream "ITS COMING RIGHT FOR US!!!" for it to be self defense... then its ok, lol

give me a break

I don't care in what context I come across a sewer rat in real life, believe me, perservation of its life is not a priority. I'm from Baltimore (and I'm sure most urban downtown areas are like this across the country) where the rats downtown are the size of small cats. I won't actively pursue the encounter, PETA, I'm just saying.

I'm a huge supporter of animal rights but I think this is so silly. I'm not a huge supporter of PETA as they tend to be over dramatic in almost all animal related news. Who cares you can kill a rat in a game? I skinned hundreds of animals and slaughtered a whole race of species in Red Dead Redemption but it doesn't me me want me to go out and kill animals. Erghhhh....

How dare you even joke about killing innocent potatoes.

Are you ready for this? Here is a quote from some douchebag who is also a member of PETA:

As I explained yesterday - Plants are living things!

Just because we don't hear them scream when we slaughter, slice and dice them, doesn't mean they don't!

I've watched docu's that prove that plants react very adversely to injury, dehydration and severment.

They are percieved to scream and groan, and whimper during such attacks on their systems.

When we see this in animals we react sympathetically, but because we can't hear plants screaming, we take it that they don't.

They DO!

What do you think about this? Are we more cruel than we first imagined, or simply ignorant?

Mark Noble

...so what does this tool eat....dirt?

I like animals, but it's just a game. I'm surprised they didn't go apeshit when Duke Nukem stomped rats, squished rats in his hands or even put a rat in a microwave. PETA should focus on stuff that's more serious and actually happens like, gee I dunno, quarterbacks carrying out dog fighting or scientists doing animal testing!?
