Opening secret compartment in ledger removes ability to save game or view skills and inventory

Happy new year all.

 

ive just started playing this on the ps5, so assume I have latest patches installled.

 After I open the secret compartment in the ledger and read and then hang onto the documents I find inside, the game (I assume is supposed to happen) makes me pass out and I awaken in the main town square area. After this happens I seem to loose all ability to save and also loose all functionality of the square button, which means I can no longer add skills, change clothes or access the inventory. I’m assuming this part isn’t supposed to happen.

 

has this happened to anyone else and what can I do to get round this?
