Guest
What a time to be alive. Sony was expected to take some move, tho.

Popular Post HuntingFever
Unless Sony now owns Bungie's entire back catalogue and will port it over to the PS4/5, this news is shrug worthy IMO, because Destiny as a franchise is a whole load of nothing and not worth buying an entire company for ?.
Lexiture
Now reboot Destiny and take the GTA Online approach.

milanbarca82
Maybe Sony want to make a new FPS IP? But that's a big sum of money no doubt. And again no thanks to Microsoft for making this a trend after introducing the online paid subscription in the 360/PS3 era. DrBloodmoney
I guess that gives them a studio with a top-tier FPS under their belt, incase CoD goes elsewhere eventually - they won’t want Guerrilla going back to Killzone considering the success of Horizon. Maybe looking at a Killzone reboot - or replacement - with Bungie at the helm?
jgm4789
I guess thats one way to help with developing a halo killer and protect against the possibility of cod going exclusive considering how ironic it is that microsoft could have easily bought them back had they bought activision a few years ago. Popular Post W0ndrful101
I'm a huge fan of Bungie's Halo games, literally my childhood. Destiny wasn't for me, but I trust they will bring us something awesome in the near future. That said, screw this acquisition bullshit. I'm glad Sony is reacting to whatever MS is doing, but I hate the idea of buying up third parties. To make it worst, this is probably just a tip of the iceberg, we are going back to nintendo vs sega, lol. "Sony has said Bungie will remain a multiplatform studio, with the option to self-publish and reach players wherever they choose to play." I actually support that a lot. We will probably get some just Playstation stuff funded by Sony, but they are free to do things on their own. If only Bethesda went the same way, create great new IPs for MS and let Fallout and TES continue to be multiplatform releases. I wonder if this will encourage MS to throw some multiplatform games. What a weird timeline we live in.

They pinched some of Rainbow Six Siege' top talent quite a while ago and the assumption was we were getting a SOCOM reboot. Does seem to be hinting that they want to bring a FPS to the scene though which will be refreshing.

Bungie had a publishing deal with Activision, but had Microsoft bought Activision before 2019, Bungie was still independent at the time. Activision never owned Bungie.
SKiL_Clash
Rather FromSoftware. Least their games are actually good. Destiny 1 was ok. But Destiny 2 is literally the same thing. Edited January 31, 2022 by SKiL_Clash
riku1274
I could care less about Destiny or any FPS really, but I know it was at least very popular, as the year it came out everyone on campus (I was a freshman at the time) was playing it. So i'm assuming its a popular franchise and I guess they wanted to lock in a known FPS franchise. Hoping it works out well for them.
Popular Post Undead Wolf
Man, Bungie really gets around, huh? I was puzzled by this acquisition at first, especially considering the amount of money involved, but I guess Sony are looking to fill that FPS void in their first party lineup, especially now that Guerrilla have moved on from Killzone. That and the uncertain future of Call of Duty on PlayStation. I don't care for Destiny, so hopefully this means we'll get a new IP out of them. A game that has a proper singleplayer campaign (AKA not a live service game like Destiny) would be nice. This does feel like a reaction to Microsoft's aggressive acquisitions as of late. Sony acquiring the likes of Insomniac, Housemarque, etc, felt natural because of their history with PlayStation. Bungie has a history with Xbox, not PlayStation. While this isn't as egregious as buying a whole publisher, I'm still not a fan of this.

It’s probably a smart strategic move, considering most of the other big FPS studios of the Ps3 / Xbox360 era were already subsumed by Activision, and became CoD support studios, like Raven.
EDGES
makes absolutely no sense to let them be a state in state, if you bought them, take them off of xbox, just like xbox is doing with Bethesda and Acti after the contracts end, seems like more and more PlayStation is telling their fans that the future is not the console, better get that PC
CptToffer
Suppose it's a good bargaining chip to keep everything multiplatform. If Microsoft decide to get funny about certain things, Sony can do the same. I'm no Destiny fan but it does well enough and it's "popular" with some folk. Wouldn't have been my first choice but hey-ho. Also, Sony will never buy Nintendo. No-one will. Not even sure why anyone would think that. Nintendo are far too much of a big company. Shoot, if they got their hands on Nintendo, that would've been hella crazy! Be a little difficult for them to get FromSoftware, since they're already owned by another company in japan. Sony would have to buy kadokawa to get fromsoft

I agree though, never happen.

Microsoft seems to be committed to buying up as much as they can even without Sony responding. Cleggworth
That's a lot of money for one studio ? I enjoyed Destiny for what it was, the whole MP and raiding thing wasn't for me but it plays exceptionally well. Let's hope it translates into something new on the FPS front for us, Playstation is lacking in this regard 3.6 billion though, good lord.... TheArcadeKid
Not a Bungie fan by any stretch, but this is a good move. Fills the FPS-sized hole in Sony's first-party line-up.
