Summer 2022 Backlog Challenge

Rant (don't worry about reading it or giving me a like on this ):

 

Ugh... looks like I'll be putting Resistance 3 on hold for a while. I tried to persevere and only play the game when I have a good amount of time to play it, that way if it starts up I can just keep at it. So far I had no problems as long as I managed to start the game but now I've reached Chapter 16 or 17 and it just won't load the chapter after the cutscene. I tried skipping it, loading the chapter separately instead of continuing, running the game on each update version, disconnecting from internet, playing it on my other PS3... pretty much everything short of rewriting the game's coding on my disc or setting it on fire. So now I've ordered another copy of the game that won't arrive till next weekend. I really hope that one works fine and the problem is not something else I haven't figured out yet because I'm loving the game (not a huge fan of true FPS games but Resistance I do love) so much so that I went and got Burning Skies for the Vita last night.

 

I mean people got the plat on this game somehow, there bound to be a few good copies out there (as long as that is the problem like I said but I haven't found any other solution other than bad installs which I've done a few times now already with no change in the end).

Update #3

 

Changes from previous update in Bold, swaps since previous update in Purple, completed games in Blue, and additions to the list in Green.

 

Progress has been slow the last few weeks and work stuff has got in the way, but with the summer holidays arriving yesterday things should pick up nicely. I’ve made a couple of swaps so will explain those first. Ever since I finished Mass Effect 1 I’ve been looking to swap in the next one, so that comes in for RE Revelations 2. With PS plus changing I was delighted to see Guardians of the Galaxy on the list so swapping that in for Salt and Sacrifice. Salt comes out simply because I’m not really enjoying it at the moment, which is a massive shame as I loved the original so much I platted it twice legitimately, and RER2 simply because I think it will be extremely hard and already being behind with my list means I can’t spend too much time on one game.

 

For the past few weeks I’ve been concentrating on two games only, AC Odyssey and Hollow Knight.

 

4. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey 9% > 21%

 

In the last challenge I took part in I finished AC origins and I had an extreme ambivalence towards it. On the one hand the traversal was butter smooth, the revamped combat system in isolation was a major improvement, and it was stunningly pretty. These things were entirely ruined though by a levelling system that is so poorly implemented it became impossible to appreciate any other aspect of the game. I slogged my way through but ended really jaded and mentioned that I already own AC Odyssey having picked it up on sale and if the systems play out in a similar way then that might be where my decade-and-a-half long relationship with AC ends.

 

Sadly, if anything it’s worse than before. The concentration on levels and loot completely ruins the game for me. Stealth is completely pointless either because the enemy level is too high and you can’t stealth kill them and end up in a fight that lasts hours, or because it’s too low and the path of least resistance is to run around like a maniac turning everything in a half mile radius into a fine paste. In an ostensibly realistic setting, it feels really wrong that some swords and daggers should have better numbers than others. If my character sneaks up behind someone and stabs them in the neck, they should not be able to shrug it off just because the blade that is embedded in their windpipe only has 28 dps, it’s absurd.

 

So far so AC origins, but I said it was worse here and that’s for one main reason, the mercenaries system. Basically getting caught committing crimes increases a bounty and you then have random mercenaries tracking you for a while. Sounds fine, but when paired with the horrible level system and the fact that they can interrupt pretty much any mission, I’ve often found myself going up against multiple higher level enemies when they showed up just as I was finishing a story mission. This leads to a ridiculous game of trying to get away from the mercenaries keen on turning my inside bits into outside bits, while also not going too far away from the mission objective lest it automatically fail. It all just feels very gamey.

 

I will persevere, but even with the next one being free with ps plus I have no desire at all to try it. Think this will be the end of the road for Assassin’s creed, which is a shame as it’s a franchise where I played basically all of and I’ve immensely enjoyed over the years.

 

13. Going Under 0% > 4% > 47% > 86%

 

I explained last time what this one was about so I won’t again. I’m nearly at the platinum, just need to grind out the last few skills. DLC challenge looks like it will be quite tough so might put it on hold for a while after getting the platinum. Also seem to have encountered a glitch where the game sometimes does not start after the first loading screen which is making things more difficult. Have enjoyed it up to now though.

 

9. Hollow Knight 0% > 2% > 100% 

 

I’ve heard many good things about Hollow Knight in the years since it was released and it’s been sitting in my library untouched for a long while. I am so glad this challenge gave me the impetus to finally give it a go. I’ve ended up playing little else for the past week or so and finally got the platinum yesterday. Confessions first, I did use the invincibility glitch a few times, mainly for the pantheons and final bosses. If you want to plat it glitch free prepare for a rough time! Otherwise you have to do the first half of the game legitimately which is not too tough (though it was murder on my 35 year old thumbs!). Everything about the design and art style is just perfect, for a cheap game it is gorgeous. Combat feels fluid and once you unlock the traversal upgrades in the metroid style moving around feels great too.

 

As for the trophy list, only small criticisms are first that it’s a bit too back loaded. There are long stretches where you will unlock nothing, so maybe a few more “beat this boss” trophies could have been more encouraging, and the boss rush trophy would be absolutely ridiculous to do legit. This would easily be an ultra-rare plat if it wasn’t for the glitch.

 

Overall really enjoyed it, and think I’ll be a day one owner of the sequel whenever that comes.

 

So that’s four, nearly 5 down. Going to keep plugging away with AC Odyssey and play bits of all the rest and see if one of them grabs me. With me being on holiday now till September I expect my pace will increase a bit.

Update 7

 

Hi everyone, time for my weekly progress check in 😊. A more productive week this week, as my Cuphead progress has stalled. All I have left is to S Rank one of the new bosses, and to finish the gauntlet. I'll keep chipping away at it in the background.

 

Challenge wise I'm still just swapping between Bayonetta and Team Sonic Racing. Some small progress on Bayonetta, I'm currently playing the game on Normal mode, and I've just beaten the first boss at the end of Chapter 4. I'm still a bit crap at dodging, and I've died a whole lot 😅. My rankings at the end of each level have been pretty bad, but I figure I'm still learning the game right now so not too worried about it for now. I also picked up a few additional miscellaneous trophies along the way.

 

Team Sonic Racing is where the bulk of my time has gone. I've finished up the Adventure mode on Normal difficulty, and again more miscellaneous trophies. My next task is going back to the levels where I didn't manage to get all the stars and keys on my first run. Most of the stars I'm missing are in the challenge levels rather than the team races, and I'm finding getting the platinum medals on these challenges pretty hard. Particularly the Daredevil challenges, where you have to slalom drift past star posts without hitting them. The number of times I've been just a few points off my target score, but then miss the last post and then run out of time 😣. Super frustrating. The guide on PSNP says this game's difficulty is a 4......lies!!! I say it's at least a 6.

 

This week I also learned that Rockstar has pulled support for Red Dead Online to go work on GTA6, and while there's no word on an actual server shutdown, it has given me the kick up the arse I need to get this finished. I started the online about 2 years ago, but my PS4 struggled so much trying to run it and sounded like a jet engine that I stopped playing. Hopefully now it'll run better on the PS5, so I'll be working on my online level 50 trophy and the other bits I need in between the challenge games. But Red Dead Redemption 2 is way too huge to be adding to my current backlog 😅. Will probably include it in the next one.

I also played Klonoa and finished the first of the 2 games in that collection (great game, but I don`t remember the extra vision being this hard).

Hi everyone, 

 

Here's my update for this week. Unfortunately no platinums, but made some decent progress. I've completed my first Last of us run on survivor difficulty and I'm playing through it again on new game plus. I still love this game so much and I'm excited to keep it going. I'm not sure if I'll complete the game on grounded too.  If I can do that, with just one playthrough I think I will. But not completely sure if that's a possibility. I'll figure that out after finishing this new game plus run. 

 

I've played quite some Cuphead and I'm loving this game. The graphics, music and gameplay are so much fun. Will continue to play and hope to finish the first playthrough this week. 

I've also played some more Pic-a-pix classic. Will keep playing levels here and there, in between the bigger games.

Hey guys.

Hope it's been a good week. This last week I've played a lot of Genesis Alpha One and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. With Genesis I played a loop without losing any crew member and am now in the final farm everything stages with a few trophies to show for it. Enjoyable tedium  With Sekiro I have restarted the game as I didn't want to jump in to an old save file and face advanced bosses without a bit of a refresher. A lot of the game has come back to me through this playthrough and bosses I struggled with my first time round are dispatched in 1-3 attempts now. I'm yet to get as far as I had on my last run of the game but I should catch up quickly.

This week I hope to continue to work on those games. Work is busy and my mum, bless her, has taken ill so I'm not sure how much play time I'll actually have. The week after I have annual leave for 7 days so I hope to make the most of it by knocking out a few more platinums. Have a good week everyone, don't melt in the heat wave

I finished SpongeBob the day I posted my last status update, again. 😅 I really enjoyed the game, as it felt like I was a kid again. Though I never played the game when I was a kid, I absolutely loved SpongeBob so it was fun revisiting all the locations and seeing the characters.

 

I have decided to add the NieR Replicant reboot as I absolutely loved the PS3 game and want to play the brother side of the story. I also want to torture myself with that platinum trophy again. 🙃

Pretty basic. You can copy and paste the first topic I make for fall. Just add people to the participation list when they sign up. Nothing too difficult. I’m currently unsure if I’m going to be participating in this winter, but we’ll see.

We are past the halfway point and my stress level is kicking in LOL. I finished up LEGO Incredibles last week. One of the shorter LEGO games recently which i was more than ok with. That was platinum #299 so right after I started working on The Last of Us. I'm about 65-75% or so done with my first playthrough  + collectibles run. Hope to have that finished up either tonight or tomorrow night. Thursday if I'm not gaming with my buddies I'd like to power thru my Easy+ run to finish upgrades. Then it's onto survivor or grounded difficulty. Not sure which I'm going to go with yet. I probably won't 100% the trophy list anyway because I doubt I'll wanna do Left Behind on Survivor, but we shall see I guess. 

 

I'm also taking my Vita to work on days where I'm in the office that way I can play Ratchet and Clank for about an hour just to chip away at that. Last of Us is the hardest platinum on my list, and Assassin's Creed 2 is the longest one remaining so when I knock those 2 out I'll feel a lot better about my chances of completing.

Hey been a bit since the last update had a period of burnout going through and finishing up horizon plat but I still need to take care of the new game plus run. I’m steadily making progress with my list but decided to opt out of doing double visual novel games in a row and jump into Yakuza 3 which maybe is what I needed it’s been to long and I missed Kiyru. Also Still need to do the speed run play through for NieR if the weather here hadn’t been so rough today would have been perfect but both of us were worried bout the power going out and didn’t want to risk it.

Got an update with no progress 😭😭 I gave up on EA's Star Wars Battlefront. I just don't have the patience for them so I'll be using one of my swaps. Perhaps I'm able to get done Star Wars Battlefront II but we'll see. In the meantime, I finished up Shadow of the Colossus and to stay on the theme, I moved up The Last Guardian to the starter role and will tackle that game from the same developers.

Hey everyone! So a bit of a delay updating recently, but I really haven't made too much progress. I'm at the busy end of the uni semester and have four major assessments due in the next two weeks, so progress will be a little slow for awhile. 

 

I did manage to get the platinum for Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. Definitely not the best game in the series and pretty damn short, but overall it wasn't a bad experience. While I'm still in a R&C mood I'll be knocking out some more of All 4 One, but then I'll be back to continue with my list throughout August. I may not 100% everything, but I will have a few weeks between semesters so I can at least finish a few more games and roll the others over to fall.

Whutitiz, challenge peeps??

 

Finished Salt and Sanctuary yesterday, and I gotta say it definitely grew on me. I forgot that an action RPG is still an RPG at the end of the day and that you're not always going to be a weakling - this game just kinda punishes you throughout, so it's easy to feel like "the fuck is this??" in the beginning. Some bosses you gotta spam attack and some you gotta be crafty with, but for me the real enemy was the platforming.

 

Beating a boss and jumping onto a platform that disappears while you're looking for the next one and falling to your death and losing 20,000+ salt? Or towards the end with the Guacamelee-ish disappearing/reappearing platforms? Some pretty 'ugh' moments, but ultimately it was a satisfying experience! So much so that I kinda felt cheap dodging the second playthrough by backing up my save😄

 

That would end the challenge for me, but it's a month early, who wants that?? I'm adding Old Man's Journey for something chill, and then Super Time Force Ultra and Guacamelee! 2 so I can get back to bein on my toes.

Going to do an early update since I finished Stray last night. Loved loved loved the game. I wasn't expecting the sort of...horror elements midway through but there was nothing I didn't like about the experience. The beginning and the end both made me tear up as I hate seeing animals in pain or acting sad. I don't normally come back to games after I get the platinum in them but there is something about this game that just got to me and I'll probably play it a few more times during trophy hunting dry spells. 

 

I also did play a little bit more Monster Boy. I like it but it was starting to get on my nerves a little bit with some of the enemies just getting way too close and I couldn't really get my fingers working to avoid them. I'm not stuck I just need to take a break from it. Not much more going on as I didn't really play much else this week. I finally got that stupid Track Star trophy in Fall Guys so now I just need to play the game for the qualifications and I'll have my platinum. I'm planning on making it my milestone for 50 platinums but that means putting a lot of stuff on hold...which I'm doing anyways for the next event coming up. I hate having to stagnate my progress on purpose when there's so much I want to play but it'll be worth it once I get a bunch of platinums in one month.

Hey guys have been a while since my last update, life has been busy, and it's just been that. 

 

So AI2 is going well I would say I am halfway through the game right now as I'm on the second half of the game (as I would put it), going to try to have that done by August 1st. 

 

I picked back up Yakuza LAD (PS5) version and will begin knocking out those trophies again. I am on chapter 5 of the story, and today I knocked out the business trophies took 2 hours to get the 10 billion trophy, and am going to work some more on some other stuff tonight, I am thinking it will take me the rest of the challenge if I had to Imagine.

Small update: Swapping Jump Force for Killzone Mercenary.

 

After allready putting Killzone on my list for the Fall Challenge, Guerilla thought otherwise. Servers will be turned of in 3 weeks. I have done all online Trophies for Jump Force. The rest takes a lot of time to do.
