PS3 (4.89) & Vita (3.74) Require Device Password & Remove Account Creation on System

How are they supposed to use your PS3? A physical device in YOUR house? If the phisher really said that, it doesn't make any sense to me 1f602.png

It made no sense to me either, lol.  They wanted me to start a new ps account using my ps3.  Not sure why they were specifically looking for ps3 users as they found me on a discord server that heavily leverages ps3 players.  Our best guess is that there might be some kind of free week of PS+ using a ps3 new account and then they could get you to use either your credit card or a stolen one in some way.  I obviously didn't follow through with them, or I'd have a better answer.  But it was specifically ps3 related as they pushed back when I said just go on the website and make it.

Can confirm you need 2-step verification turned on now for the device setup password to work properly. Tried generating a device setup password for an already existing account and it’s not working when 2-step is disabled.

And to add to this inconvenience, I’m having to do this for an account that was already on my PlayStation. It’s definitely a minor inconvenience, and an understandable change, but this could be bad for people without the tools needed to do all of this (laptop, phone with browsing support, etc.).

Just updated my and my hubby's PS3. Both still signed in fine after the updates, we've already had device passwords for years since setting up 2FAs on our accounts anyway.

Can't really tell what account management settings are meant to be missing? It's been a while since I seriously looked at them though. I have noticed they also updated the PS+ cloud storage icon as well, for whatever reason. Still seem to be able to access cloud saves fine regardless.

Updated my Vita (first update in about 2+ years I think), again, still logged in fine, and other than that, I noticed no changes.

I did decide to briefly start digital games on all systems to make sure there was no authentication issues or whichever, which I doubted there would be, and there wasn't.

I can understand some people fearing for the future with updates like this, but I actually think the fact they even bothered to push updates like this to begin with probably means PSN on PS3 and Vita likely aren't going away anytime soon. If anything, I think we're more likely to see the issues that have been cropping up in the past few years, like recently downloaded games having "expired" back in April, as they continue to neglect the servers. I'm personally more worried it'll get to the point where PSN is basically a wasteland on these consoles, and Sony is either taking forever or not even bothering to resolve issues any more. Hopefully I'm wrong, but I do see that being the more likely scenario for how PSN "dies" on these consoles, rather than being shut down outright.

So it’s basically Sony saying “Don’t you guys have phones?!”

Essentially haha ? highly unlikely for someone to not be able to log back into their account after this update with today’s technology at hand.

But I found myself in a situation where I couldn’t use my phone exclusively to properly set up 2-factor verification. I can’t use my phone number for some reason and you can’t scan a QR code from your own phone (unless you can and I’m just really that dumb) so I had to yank out my Mac to do everything.

If Sony is going to make it this difficult to buy a new PS3 and create an account on it for people who have to generate their own electricity with their homemade bicycle generator on their also homemade television using two miles of patched phone line tapped into the closest switching station as their internet source after getting the console delivered by drone using Prime 2 hour shipping, they should just stop making and selling the consoles!

Actually, that's the whole point of QR codes. With iPhone, you can just point your camera at it and it will prompt you to open the URL. Most new Android phones do the same.

Yes I know, what I meant is the QR code is on the phone itself, so I can’t scan it lol. Had to use my Mac to scan the code from there to transfer the account info to the Authenticator app. Otherwise I would’ve had to manually enter the obnoxiously long registration code (the website doesn’t allow copy/paste). ?

My bad, misunderstood you there. Yeah, that can be tricky, I think it can be done with 3rd party apps but I have never tried that.

All good, I should’ve worded what I said differently lol. Yeah I had a unique situation with not being able to use my phone number, but not everyone will run into that roadblock. It’s quite simple to set everything up thankfully. Can’t knock them for wanting to add a little extra security to an older console either.

Sounds to me like they're just making you go straight to the website to make new accounts instead of doing it on the consoles themselves. Not really anything to get too worked up about imo if that's the case, it's a mildly inconvenient at best. Don't get me wrong I love my Vita and PS3 but the wifi chips in those things are ancient now and most phones are considerably faster than both I'd assume. Makes sense for them to want people to just do it online from a phone, pc, or a new console. Pretty shitty move to just stealth drop it without giving anyone any warnings, can't say I'm surprised though... Sony's gonna Sony ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

lol my internet feels slowest on PS4, and PS5. Only thing that Netflix would be pixelated playing on, not even PS3 did that which is why I'd use that over PS4 (and the better remote) to stream stuff. That has nothing to do with it.

Most generous take on this is that PS3/Vita are easy for bots to utilize to create accounts to send out porn spam (never seen out any other kind, but it's probably there too).

For someone to have internet and a PS3, and not have a phone? Highly unlikely.

I didn't have a phone when I got a PS3. I didn't even have one until PS5 was out because I didn't need one yet and didn't feel like wasting money on something unnecessary at the time.

I bet there is at least one person in that situation, so it's not impossible.

im that one person lol. seriously i have a 2012 droid because i dont use apps. they steal to much info and i decided years ago to just never get a new phone because there is no point.plus i have the old style keyboard to text. but unfortunately verizon is forcing me finally to update by the end of the year to a phone that has hd voice. i would still have a flip phone if alltell didnt sell to verizon and verizon made me update back then as well

this is actually a bit of a pain in the ass for me. i cant scan my tv screen i dont have the tech to do it. now i have to go on pc and find my list of all my passwords and emails for each account.

alright so i just updated, then i get the bar code screen. cant do that. so i go on pc. pc then generates a new password. i then have to type that password into my ps3 password. then it logs in. now i dont know if i can use my original password or do i have to save the generated one. or do i type in a new password back to my old one. this makes no sense.

then it says this

Generate or Manage Device Setup Passwords

If prompted on your PS3, PS Vita, PSP, or mobile device, you'll need to generate a device setup password. Once you enter this password, you'll be able to sign in using your sign-in ID and account password.

You can revoke the device setup password anytime.

If you’re using a 2012 droid, every time you go online someone is probably stealing your info, you don’t need apps to do that. You probably haven’t had a security update since 2013, if you got one at all.

Are you using this site through your 2012 droid?

Anyway, the QR code just directly links to the web address posted right above the QR code, so nothing is locked behind needing a modern smartphone.

i use my phone for calling and texting.

my pc on the other hand, im aware facebook and everything else is stealing everything lol. cant win all battles

i dont understand this, i cant login unless i use their device generated password. and then it gives you a option to not use 2 step. but if you say no, you have to keep using their generated passwords to login to ps3. so then if you say yes to 2 step i have to get a text every single time i login to ps3 and enter it?

So, I decided to set a generated password for an alt account on the PS3, logged in via browser and you CAN generate a new password for these legacy devices without the need of having 2FA activated. Not meaning that you must but I highly recommend it, especially protecting your main account.

To generate a password on a PS3 or Vita, go to https://www.playstation.com/acct/device-password.

No, you must use the device password. You must insert it ONCE on the PS3 anyway, not every single time.

Last option. I am using this since months. I generated it once for every single PS3 I own and assigned them. No need for any SMS usage or typing new everytime.

Damn, ninja'd. :/
