Skotafactor’s hunt for a damn fine trophy cabinet

1st update:

Knock-Knock: "How's Annie?" - This was achievable about two-thirds into the game. What a bizarre little game, not what I expected it to be at all. It's more of a 2D survival horror than the adventure game I assumed it was. I haven't gotten to the end of a play through yet, I'm not sure if this is one I'm going to see through to 100% completion. It started out interesting enough, but very quickly got incredibly repetitive. The level layouts seem to be randomly generated from what I can tell, but there really isn't a lot that differentiates the first level from the next.

There is an annoying traversal through the woods in between each "Nightmare" level, and it can be quite tedious if you're going for the collectibles there. The other main collectible just involves going up to the same door 10 times in a row. This almost feels like a glitch or an exploit, but I'm not sure how the developer intended for them to be correctly found.

As the game progresses, you're given a sanity meter that doesn't respawn upon reaching a new level. I didn't realize this when I first got to this section. Now I'm not sure if I have enough sanity left to earn either of the game's two main endings.

As for the trophy I was here to earn, "How's Annie?" - it gave me a little bit of trouble as I was having a hard time getting doppelgängers to spawn. From what I understand, they won't appear until the sixth nightmare. The trophy name is relevant given that the question was asked by Agent Cooper's doppelgänger at the end of season 2. To achieve this, you have to find a neutral doppelgänger (there are also bad ones that will run to you and hurt you). I luckily was able to get this the first time I found a neutral doppelgänger, as others online have reported issues with it.

I was playing on my newly acquired Vita, so maybe I'll come back to it on a long car ride or my next flight, but as for now, it's on to Trials Fusion!

Pretty sweet concept for a trophy cabinet, Twin Peaks is one of my favorite shows ever. The 1st "Life is Strange" game has a Twin Peaks trophy reference with the "Compressed" trophy, you have to take a picture of a mirror that says "Fire Walk with Me." Wouldn't really be able to tell it's a reference by the name of the trophy though so it probably wont work with your cabinet, but it's the only one I could think of atm. You would think Alan Wake would have more TP's references in the trophy names being that it's basically Twin Peaks in game form lol.

Damn fine trophy hunting idea! A bummer that the FWWM graffiti from Life Is Strange isn't reflected in the trophy art or name, huh? I feel like the thoroughly Peaksian adventure game Rainswept had a trophy referencing Lucy's HOT coffee... ʞɔɒd bᴎɘd ꙅmɿɒ ʏm ꙅɘmiƚɘmoꙅ ƚud

Good luck, and may your drapes run forever silent.

Totally! I was surprised at how many Truberbrook had since tonally it didn't feel very similar to TP. Life is Strange, Deadly Premonition, Oxenfree, and Kentucky Route Zero are all really fantastic games with nods to Lynch, but no trophies that would fit in my cabinet unfortunately.

Are you referring to the "Damn Fine Cup of Coffee" trophy? I actually just took that and "Damn Good Coffee" from OlliOlli2 out of my cabinet because I decided I didn't want to have any repeats. There's actually a number of games that use "Fire Walk with Me" and "The Owls Are Not What they Seem" as trophy titles, but one trophy per reference is enough for me :) And yeah, LiS is one of the many games with TP references that don't actually have any nods in the trophy list.

Update 2:

Trials Fusion: “Log Lady” - Okay, so I really didn't anticipate how difficult this one would be. To unlock it, you need to find a hidden tape recorder in each level. What I didn't realize from the get go was into order to access all 9 levels, you have to beat the final level of the base game. I had assumed I would have access to the DLC right away. I am quite bad at this game, so getting 110 medals was a task for me. Having all the DLC really helped with this, I'm not sure I wouldn't been able to get all the medals otherwise. The collectibles themselves weren't too difficult once I had access to all the tracks, and you don't have to finish a track for the audio log to count.

This is a very fun game, but very hard and punishing. Mad respect to the folks the managed to 100% it, I know for certain that I will not be one of them. I may try to clean up some of the gold DLC trophies to inflate my percentage down the line, but definitely taking a break for now.

Knock-Knock update: Due to an unfortunate family tragedy, I was away from home the past few days. I brought my Vita with me, and Knock-Knock is the only game I have for it, so I ended up actually seeing the game through to completion before starting Trials last night.

I think Worse Than Death is going to be my next game in this challenge. I haven't decided if I want to jump straight in or focus on some other games in my backlog. I was able to pick up a disc copy of The Evil Within 2 for about a quarter of its current PSN listing. I'm waiting for an opportunity for Ion Fury and Willy Morgan to drop in price before I snag either of them.

Update 3:  I’m back baby! I took a nice long hiatus from this project to knock out some other games in my backlog. I decided to come back and finally tackle Worse Than Death. I walked into this charming little survival horror game completely blind, and WOW! I loved it. Such a well told and creepy story with some good jump scares. The gameplay is a mix of 2D walking sims (a la Oxenfree and the Artful Escape) and some light stealth/survival in places. It’s a shame that only 45 people have gotten the platinum. It’s a pretty easy plat as well, but requires at least 3 playthroughs since difficulties don’t stack. The biggest challenge is the lack of documentation on some trophies’ requirements, but it’s pretty manageable (especially if you go out of your way to read/inspect everything as you go). I only missed one missable trophy on my first playthrough.

The trophy in question for this project was Twin Peeks, which has you investigating the backstory of Vanessa (a twin) across the first 6 chapters.

Overall, I highly recommend this little gem. Great story, atmosphere, and I really liked the overall art direction as well. I beat it in two days because I wanted to soak up all the lore my first time through, but I could see some speedrunners beating it in a few hours.

For my next game in the series, I’ll be going for Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bonetown. During my break, I did discover one more trophy reference to TP that’ll bring the cabinet up to its max at 10:

Fall of Light: “One Chants out Between Two Worlds”. This is a line from Bob’s poem, Fire Walk with Me.

FINAL UPDATE:

I've done it! I've completely filled the trophy cabinet. One thing that I loved about this project was that it introduced me to games that wouldn't have normally been on my radar that I really enjoyed, such as Ion Fury and Worse Than Death. In all, I ended up plat'ing/completing every game on the list except Trials Fusion. The most painful plat experience for me was Fall of Light, but I'll get into the details during my review of each. Keep reading for the reviews!

Worse Than Death

TP Trophy: Twin peeks

I already gave a little review a few threads up, so I won't spend much time on this one. I really liked it - the atmosphere is nicely reminiscent of Twin Peaks as well as other classic survival horror games. Definitely check it out. It's a little short and can be a little tricky to figure out what you need to collect due to the lack of documentation online. At the time of writing, only 56 people have gotten the plat.

Truberbrook

TP Trophy: Wrapped in Plastic

Additionally: The Owls Are Not What They Seem, The Lonesome Foghorn Blows, Every Day, Once a Day, Give Yourself a Present, You Remind me Today of a Small Mexican Chihuahua, Gotta Light?

Truberbrook is a point-and-click adventure game with sci-fi and comedy undertones. I love point-and-click games, but this one didn't really do anything for me. The best thing it had going for it was the set design - I believe each area was a hand-built model. The humor didn't really land, the voice acting was okay, and the story confused me a bit. It's an easy platinum, especially if you use a walkthrough for some of the more obtuse puzzles. The Twin Peaks references really only extend to the Trophy list; I don't really remember seeing any references in the actual game besides the main character talking to a dictaphone.

Alan Wake

TP Trophy: Damn Good Cup of Coffee

Alan Wake is great. Some of the locations of Bright Falls are ripped directly from Twin Peaks, and certain characters like the Lamp Lady are direct homages to TP characters. The gameplay still holds up as well as I remember it from back when I first played it on the 360. This was one of the only 360 exclusives I cared about, and I'm glad it made it over to PS finally! Definitely worth playing for both fans of action and horror.

Trials Fusion

TP Trophy: Log Lady

As I mentioned a few posts above, this one is tough. I didn't spend enough time on it to get good enough to complete some of the harder levels, but I had fun with it while I was playing it. Do I have the discipline to see it through to 100%? Definitely not.

Ion Fury

TP Trophy: The Owls Are Not What They Seem

When it comes to FPS games, I don't have a ton of experience - so I wasn't sure what I was going to think about this one. There were a few other games with this same trophy title, but I figured I'd go for Ion Fury since it wasn't another p&c and looked pretty fun. I really enjoyed it. It could be punishing at times (especially the final boss), but it played great and graphically felt very nostalgic. The most annoying part was hunting down all the enemies and secret areas in each level, which really inflated platinum time. Small spiders could be hidden in vents or random corners of the map. Your radar has limited range and only last a few seconds (you have to find radar pick-ups in the levels). The Twin Peaks trophy is specifically for a hidden adventure through the Black Lodge. I believe this is also a Duke Nukem reference as an early build of Duke Forever featured a level ending in the Black Lodge.

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

TP Trophy: The black lodge

Additionally: Fire walk with me

I feel similar to this one that I felt to Truberbrook. Most of the humor relied on really dated references to classic LucasArts adventures that have been made a thousand times at this point in other p&c games. Don't get me wrong, LucasArts adventures are top tier, I just think it says something about your game if you rely too much on referencing other, better games. The puzzles could be rather obtuse, and I felt like the world was too spread out which made finding the necessary inventory items a chore. The plot itself felt like a rip-off of the Goonies or Uncharted 4, but with much less substance to keep me interested. I may be a little too harsh on this one, but it wasn't one of my favorites. The TP trophy required you to click on a hotel floor whose pattern was a direct reference to the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks.

The Darkside Detective

TP Trophy: mooR deR

Okay, now we're getting into actual fantastic examples of Point-and-Click games. I loved both this game and its sequel. Hilarious, creative, and fun; the Darkside Detective spoofs a lot of supernatural/sci-fi mysteries like the X-files. The writing was super witty and clever and the puzzles felt sometimes challenging but overall very fair. Rather than an overarching narrative, the Darkside Detective plays out as a series of vignettes, or cases. I really liked that approach as it added a lot more variety to the story than if you were chasing once case the whole time. The game interestingly doesn't feature a whole lot of animation (characters don't have walk cycles and stay stationary in each location), but they made it work. I highly recommend. The TP trophy is another visit to the Black Lodge inside the game.

Fall of Light

TP Trophy: One chants out between two worlds

Additionally: Fire walk with me

Okay, here we go. I really didn't like this one. Fall of Light is dungeon crawler where you are escorting your daughter through very hostile territory. The game is ugly - textures are plain, models are blocky. In addition, the game is centered around combat, but the combat is so clunky and at time unresponsive. Hit boxes feel inconsistent. You and your enemies will run around whiffing at each other. Sometimes an enemy will knock one block of health, sometimes the same enemy will kill you in one hit. The game's difficulty curve actually ramps down rather than up. Once you have access to a good sword about 1/3 of the way through the game and have taken the time to farm some health, you're going to die a lot less. There are a lot of collectibles (100 fragments of Luce, ugh) and it's pretty easy to get locked out of the normal and good endings if you fail a sequence that occurs directly after each boss battle. The game requires two full playthroughs, once in normal and a New Game+ (thankfully all health and weapons carry over) in Nightmare. Enemies are stronger and the environment is much darker in Nightmare. After I initally got the two TP related trophies, I promptly uninstalled the game in frustration. I came back to it 3 weeks later determined to not let it get the best of me- only to uninstall it again after reaching the same point. I slept it off and came back the next day - now I am proudly one of 27 people with the platinum. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

The Evil Within 2

TP Trophy: Fire Walk With Me

Like Ion Fury, there are a number of games that feature this trophy title. This one seemed the most interesting to me though. I walked in pretty blind. I had tried the first game a few years back, but couldn't get past the chainsaw guy in the beginning and gave up pretty fast. The Evil Within 2 was great, though. It looked beautiful, combat felt really polished, and it had some amazing set pieces. The story was the only thing really lacking for me. The town of Union has some nice small town, Peaks-y vibes to it, it's a shame that there aren't really any locals lol. Overall, the plat experience was pretty smooth, fun, and easy (thanks to Tango/Bethesda adding cheats in an update that don't disable trophies). If you are going for the plat without cheats though, you may be in for a rough time. There are a few times during the game that use the motif of the red curtains/chevron floor used in the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks. The dream/nightmare logic the game followed also felt loosely inspired by the series, though it doesn't have the same humor and charm above all the horror.

Knock-Knock

TP Trophy: How's Annie?

I did a more in-depth write-up of this one a few threads up, but it was a bizarre little exploration/2D survival game where you explore the ever-changing layout of your house. I played it on Vita, and honestly, I think that's the best way to play it. It was enjoyable enough to play it all the way through, but there were some missable trophies and odd game mechanics that felt like a bit of a chore.

Conclusion

So that wraps up this silly little project. I'm glad I got to experience a lot of games I never would have even heard of had it not been for this challenge, though one or two of them I would've been completely fine not playing. There are a number of other games that feature some of the same trophy titles, but I think I'm pretty content with my cabinet the way it is now.
