Platinum Every Genre Challenge

 

Premise: Platinum at least one game from every genre. Everything from an Action game to a Shooter to a Pinball game to a Racing game.

 

Rules:

• First off let's define "genre" and explain how this normally subjective term has been made objective for the purposes of this challenge.
  • https://www.igdb.com/ is the official source for all game metadata for multiple gaming sites, including PSNProfiles, Twitch, etc.
  • 
  • I used the IGDB API to gather a full, comprehensive list of genres; all the genres that a game can possibly be assigned via IGDB. And...I found it lacking. There are only 23 genres and though they are technically all-encompassing, they seemed too broad. However, when combined with themes, another piece of information available from IGDB, the list was much more exhaustive and well-suited to a challenge such as this. So, for the purposes of this challenge, to platinum one game of every genre means to platinum one game of every genre AND theme available via IGDB. Therefore when the word genre is used, it should be known this means genre + theme.
• All that said, there are a total of 45 genres available via IGDB:
  • 4X (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate), Action, Adventure, Arcade, Business, Card & Board Game, Comedy, Drama, Educational, Erotic, Fantasy, Fighting, Hack and slash/Beat 'em up, Historical, Horror, Indie, Kids, MOBA, Music, Mystery, Non-fiction, Open world, Party, Pinball, Platform, Point-and-click, Puzzle, Quiz/Trivia, Racing, Real Time Strategy (RTS), Role-playing (RPG), Romance, Sandbox, Science fiction, Shooter, Simulator, Sport, Stealth, Strategy, Survival, Tactical, Thriller, Turn-based strategy (TBS), Visual Novel, Warfare
  • NOTE: Two of the above genres do not count! So really there are only 43 for this challenge.
    • Erotic does not count because this is a family friendly challenge. If you want to, go ahead, but it is absolutely not required. 
    • MOBA does not count because there's literally only one game on this site with that genre that has a platinum.
  • Here's a template for update posts with all the genres laid out and ready for you to put your games next to them:

• There is no room for interpretation on what genre/theme a game is**. This information is determined by IGDB, not me or any other personal classification. If the game lists the genre/theme on the game details page here on PSNProfiles, it can be used. If it doesn't, it cannot.
• **The only exceptions to this that I've found are 1) If one region/system of a game lists it as X genre, but another region/system does not...you can use the genre even if you platinumed a region/system that doesn't have it since it is the same game. 2) If IGDB itself shows a game as X genre, but PSNProfiles doesn't reflect that, you can still use it as that genre.
• Most games have more than one genre/theme. You can only use each game for one of these. 
  • 
  • For example, the above game can be used as either your Role-playing (RPG), your Action OR your Fantasy. But not more than one of these. 
  • That said, stacks count! If you platinumed both the PS4 and PS5 versions of Stranger of Paradise, you can count one as your Action and another as your Fantasy. 
• Some genres/themes like Action or Adventure are very common. Some others like Music or Tactical are not. If a game lists both Tactical and Action, you're better off marking it down as your Tactical game and finding another Action game than you are doing the opposite.
• You can use any platinumed game on your profile, no matter how long ago you achieved it.
• There is no end date on this challenge. 
• The game must have a platinum trophy to count. No 100%'s. 
• You only have to have achieved the platinum trophy for the game to count. DLC trophies are not required.
• It will take some work to look through your profile to see what genres you have already completed and which you have yet to complete. You can either go through all your platinums one by one to be thorough or just look at ones you think are most likely to fit the genre you are looking for.
• PSNProfiles has a built-in way to search for games by genre/theme:
  • Go to https://psnprofiles.com/games 
  • Then to search by genre add ?genre=# to the url (example: https://psnprofiles.com/games?genre=31)
  • Then to search by theme add ?theme=# to the url (example: https://psnprofiles.com/games?theme=28)

Neat idea for an event. This hobby has always encouraged me to branch out and try to find fun games to platinum in different genres and has opened a lot of doors for me that way. This is a fun way to help everyone expand their horizons.

Yeah having them all laid out like that is interesting, there’s definitely a handful that I don’t think I’ve explored yet myself. I might sign up for this at a later date as it looks like a fantastic way to find and discover some new games, the only reason I hesitate now is because I’m a little over-extended with events this year and want to make sure I can finish some of the ones I’ve already committed to. ?

I've always tought about this as a nice challange idea ever since the A to Z platinum challange came out (which I stil haven't completed lol). Through the years I have conquer genres I've never thought I will y'know stuff like fighting/racing games and even thought I don't consider myself a pro at these, nowdays I can safely say I'm no longer a newbie at them. This is a nice chance for players to go out of their comfort zones and tackle new games and maybe discover some genres they don't even know they like.

 

Originally I tought this was going to be too much of a complex theme since there are pretty much an infinite amount of genres out there so I like that you went with the IGDB/theme approach to keep things nice and simple so props for that!

I will be listing my favorite/proudest platinum from each genre. I still have a few to get but hopefully I'll be done with it through the year.

(Annoyingly, the PS3 collection is not classified as Pinball even though it also has a Sonic Spinball trophy...)

I plan on playing Unpacking at some point, which I'll use for nonfiction, but the other 3 don't have any clear candidates. I may look into Creature in the Well for pinball, but only the Asia and Japan stacks have the tag; would the western stack still count (@Rebourne07)?

@Thedah yeah some of the weirdest I've seen is Minecraft as a fighting game and Shadow of the Colossus as a simulator. What exactly is SotC simulating?? ?

@Xylobe lol I thought this challenge would be exception-free since it's all determined by IGDB...but here you are on the second day finding an exception! Yeah, if you have the NA version of Creature in the Well you can count that as pinball since the other regions say its pinball. No idea why that happened.

Got lucky on a couple of them (GTA3 as Business, Battleship as RTS) and only missing 2: Pinball and Romance. Got an idea already for Romance; Hakuoki: Stories of the Shisengumi on PSNow. As far as the Pinball is concerned, I thought for sure I had one, but the Williams collection I have completed is only a 100%. Might have to get the Genesis collection on PS$ for that. (Annoyingly, the PS3 collection is not classified as Pinball even though it also has a Sonic Spinball trophy...)

If I can throw out a recommendation for pinball, check out Creature In The Well. It’s a pinball style top down puzzle dungeon hack and slash where your character is basically the paddles hitting energy balls to solve puzzle rooms. It’s great.

 

Edit: Ha ha. I just read this whole topic and saw everyone’s already talking about it. It’s a good game.
