PS5 Controller Involuntary Manslaughter

16 posts in this topic

I have had my PS5 controllers maybe a year and a half and the trigger has gone on both of them (thanks Maneater!) one worse than the other, but between the two of them I could get by in most games. Had no luck contacting Sony over the issue and was trying to wait as long as possible to replace.

However.. over the weekend, one was playing Sega Megadrive Classics. One may have got quite frustrated and one may or may not have rage thrown a controller. Said controller is being really petty about it and is refusing to function in game. It will let me navigate the Home Screen lulling me into a false sense of security that it’s working.. but as soon as I get into a game it refuses to function.

Have I unintentionally murdered it? Or is it just in a mood with me about the ‘incident’ and is too scared to play any games with me now?

Any help would be appreciated

I'm not a specialist but said one should probably add more details, as in which buttons don't work, do triggers or analog sticks work at all. Does it charge, and does anything change when you set it to work as a wired controller in console's settings.

I somehow don't see it suddenly springing back to life all by itself.

Shouldn't it be involuntary padslaughter though?

thanks Maneater

Love the game to death, but Maneater is hell on the R2 button.

In game nothing works. The triggers, the buttons, except the home button. I’ve also noticed it works as soon as it turns on and then stops working after a few minutes. It’s completely lost its mojo. Golden axe and streets of rage has clearly injured its soul as much as mine.

Padslaughter! My mistake.

There was an issue with some PS5 controllers not working ingame because the triggers where constantly registering inputs due to some manufacturing defect. I stumbled across it by accident, while I was looking up on the difficulty of changing the d-pad (I mass murder those) so I didn't fully read the discussion. Maybe it got hit on the triggers and it... Well, triggered this issue. You can connect the controller to a PC and check if the triggers are reporting as being constantly pressed in a pad tester software or website.

Oh that’s helpful thanks I’ll look into that. Yeah I’m a bit screwed now as one won’t work at all and the other the trigger has completely gone. I have games to buy I don’t want to spend my pennies on controllers 😭

thanks for your advice I’ll look now.

Did you try resetting it through the small button on the back of the controller?

If it's not mechanically broken, this may fix whatever communication issue exists.  Cell-phone repair shops are a good place to look if it needs to be taken apart, and it's something mechanical.

Thanks I’ll try this. I didn’t know people could take it apart at a shop. That could be an option to try and save it Thankyou.

I would reset the controller as mentioned above.

On one occasion I threw my DS4 controller on the floor which then promptly bounced out of the window (I was upstairs) & landed in the garden below. To my surprise it still worked. 😆

Posted (edited)

I turned down the trigger effect intensity so it was at the lowest setting. This way I hope to save the triggers a bit longer because I noticed they could be overused in games like Wreckfest or Maneater.

When playing maneater I even turned it off the 2nd day cause my finger hurt the day after, the R2 button is really abused in that game :P

I have 1 DS4 controller that often 'stays on' instead of turning off when not used for too long. It doesn't respond at all then and I also have to reset it to get it to work again.

You don’t need a shop, the controllers are quite easy to take apart yourself. I’ve done the R2 spring replacement on both my launch controllers. It’s an easy and cheap home repair.

Oh my! This sounds hilarious! I threw mine onto a soft bed and it’s had a right paddy about it. Not robust at all. I haven’t tried resetting yet, the kids have had me occupied. I’m hoping this works.

I actually turned mine off day 1 🤦🏼‍♀️ I find it off putting and distracting. Then I also read how it can wear them out quicker so haven’t turned it back on and the triggers have still gone 😭 the controller that works now the trigger is so loose and it’s super sensitive I accidentally knock it all the time.

oh dear not sure if I trust myself to do this although would love to on both! I did take my PS4 apart to clean it but not sure I’m skilled enough for a controller. Do you know what equipment I need?

Screwdriver. It does help to have one of those plastic shell cracker tools that you use to open any type of plastic case. I’m sure someone knows the name, but it’s not entirely necessary. You will also need replacement springs. I got a ten pack for less than $10.

There are some great videos, it really is very easy - at least for the R2. L2 springs are an entirely different exercise in frustration

You could be facing a very long prison sentence for what you did to that controller. How could you?
