How does the profile level work?

I never really understood how it worked and how you can influence it. For example I saw a person with 195 platinum's and level 507 and another person with 127 platinum's and level 505. First person has way more platinum's but only 2 levels above the second person.

I think each trophy worth some set of profile points. Bronze, silver, gold and platinum trophies have different points each. I think I could be mistaken. 
 

so maybe the two profiles you have viewed despite one having more platinums, the other might have more trophies. 
 

not sure if rarity of trophies themselves have an affect of points but I highly doubt that.

All trophies have different point I not sure what point are worth but depending on what they play and point
