Hypothetical: A "Vita 2" would most likely not have BC with Vita 1 games.

Given that the likelihood of us ever actually seeing a Vita 2/PSP 3/Whatever-you-want-to-call-it is probably somewhere just a degree or two north of “nil,” I’m not sure why it would matter. That’s aside from there being no relationship between what PSVR2 does or does not do versus what a hypothetical new handheld might or might not do. The PSVR2 isn’t backwards compatible because the tracking technology is completely different (essentially inverted.) A “Vita 2” could be backwards compatible straight across (IE: has the two touch panels or other hardware requirements), it could be backwards compatible the way PSTV is (plays “most” games, with workarounds for certain features that are lacking), it could be partially backwards compatible (plays games that don’t rely on unique hardware mechanics) or could be completely incompatible, and all of it just depends on what imaginary specs such a device might have.

Further, define “backwards compatible.” How backwards are we talking, here? Vita plays Vita, PSP and PS1 games; if a PSP 3 played PSP 3, PSP and PS1 games but not Vita games, would it not still be considered “backwards compatible?” What if it played Vita, but not PSP or PS1? What if it played Vita 2 and PS3? You can drive yourself nuts blue skying things.

First, a Vita 2 won't happen (a missed opportunity I know), but if it did this wouldn't be very surprising.

The vita is quite old at this point and Sony has already attempted to shut down PS3 & Vita stores. If it were to happen, the store would be built into the current PS economy and not work with these titles. If it supported physical games, it would likely use a different cartridge altogether.

With knowledge that PSVR2 will not have backwards compatibility with PSVR game now known. There is a really high chance that if a "Vita 2" was made, it would most likely not have backwards compatibility with Vita 1 games.

Huh!? How is one linked to the other?

Regardless, a 'PS Vita 2' or any other dedicated handheld device from PlayStation will never happen. That ship has sailed. Between Nintendo dominating the dedicated handheld market, to mobile dominating everything else in between, and even popular alternatives like Steam Deck and Android based handhelds, it makes less sense now for PlayStation to come out with a new dedicated handheld than it ever did before. But most of all, they've just recently relaunched their mobile division and seemingly have big plans for that, so If all of these factors don't kill your hope and enthusiasm for a 'Vita 2', then I don't know what will.

The Vita 2 is, and always will be, imaginary.... so it can do anything!

It's not only backwards compatible with the Vita, but forwards compatible with the Vita 3, 4 & 5, prints money, tastes delicious, cleans your house, and you win prizes just for looking at it!

PSVR2  doesn't have backwards compatability because PSVR1 tracks the lights on the controllers and headset, while PSVR2 has 4 cameras on the headset that track your bed , doors ,lamp etc... It is just not the same information that the console is getting.

Vita would probably have exact controls as all other consoles.

One is not connected to the other.

At this point if there ever was another sony handheld it will be nothing more then a digital only streaming/remote play focused portable ps5 that may have the option to download ps4 titles. Even nintendo halfway phased out of the dedicated handheld game in favor of the hybrid model.
