Is this a Kart Racer?

Sorry if this is a nooby question, but does this play more like a NFS style of racer or more like a Kart racer. Gameplay looks like a table top racer, but I have no experience with that genre so am wondering what I can compare this to based on what I have played. 

 

I am probably an above average racing game player and a below average Kart racer, so am just wondering this before I start. 

 

Do you need to chain "drift boost" etc for the platinum? that mechanic is usually the platinum blocker for me.

 

I have this in my backlog so am just wondering what I am in for!

It's kinda a hybrid - the tracks have hazards, loops etc like a Kart Racer, but there's none of the items/powerups you'd expect. It's like they've dropped regular arcade racing vehicles into a Kart Racing track.

 

There is a boost/drift mechanic - and it's essential even for the lowest score in the time trials (the higher score on the TTs eludes me, haha) - but it's an easy one - L2 drifts you round corners and this fills your boost that you activate with X. There's no Mario Kart style snaking.
