Have you ever been banned for an Insanely stupid reason?

Not speaking for myself, but I did resort to reporting a random user over the course of boosting Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. I scouted the ranked matching server with an alt account prior to trying to match with it or a partner, and I still found a random at the hour of night I was boosting. I just remained idle with it, and quite shortly that account received interesting messages from the random player, one of which included profanity. I simply reported it and got back “we have taken appropriate action with the other user.” I guess he got a 7 day ban or such because there was no further impediment to completing that infamous grind. Personally I don’t think the message network needs to be moderated or punitive because you already have the power to punish a player by blocking/unfriending ?‍♂️ but this is the way it is, I simply used a feature that is available to everyone.

Oh boy, finally a place to share two interesting stories. I assume this is banned from anything and not anything specific. But funnily enough, I was banned permanently twice and each time it had something to do with the PlayStation community.

1. I was banned for telling the truth in the largest PlayStation Community or "group" on Facebook back when I used it and here is why... If you were into PS Plus rumors in early 2018, you might have seen this image floating around: (https://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/143/590x/PlayStation-Plus-PS-Plus-free-games-PS4-910328.jpg)

This is a fake leaked PS Plus games for February of 2018, I made this as a joke for some friends when I was sharing it with them, and one of them told me to post it on the PlayStation community, I was younger then and I thought to myself how funny it would be to troll people with a fake PS Plus leak that was obviously too good to be true. But then it got to r/PSplus on Reddit and then they made articles out of it, so so many articles, here are a few:

https://www.thenerdmag.com/ps-plus-february-2018-free-games-leaked/

https://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/910328/PS-Plus-February-2018-leak-PlayStation-Plus-reveal-Dark-Souls-2-Far-Cry-4

https://www.gamepur.com/news/february-2018-ps-plus-free-games-leaked

https://gearnuke.com/ps-plus-february-2018-games-leaked/

https://gearnuke.com/ps-plus-february-2018-leak-get-free-far-cry-4/

There are so so many more and even YouTube videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmfezqTTYvI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XheYERwk0IQ

And there are more of those as well. Now here's where my being banned comes in. You see, this was all fun and games when it was between friends and a small group, but then it spread to the bigger groups and there were articles and I saw that a lot of people were believing in this leak, people wanted so badly for it to be real and I hit a moment where I started to feel real regretful and it made me feel really bad that so many people were going to be disappointed. So I came out and told the truth, first on Reddit where people understood and thanked me for coming out with the truth, I posted proof of course showing the photoshop doc open.

But then I posted it in the largest PlayStation Group on Facebook admitting that it is fake and that people shouldn't get their hopes up. Most people took it well, except for a moderator of the group who commented and I am paraphrasing here "stop lying for likes, we all know you didn't make this stop trying to get attention" I responded telling him that the proof is in the photo I provided of the Photoshop doc, he confidently told me "It is real and just because it's a leak you are trying to say it's fake by taking credit for it" And before I could even write a response I was removed from the group. Banned, and back then I actually used Facebook a lot, it was the main platform. I felt so depressed that I was removed from what I thought to be my own community, I think that's why I never felt such a deep connection to PlayStation after that point. I got banned for telling people the truth because a moderator wouldn't believe the truth.

And so I'd say that is by far one of the dumbest reasons I've been banned.

2. BUT, shout out to the horrible and quite frankly stupid moderator on the PlayStation Discord Server. from the PlayStation Reddit page there's a link to an "Official" Discord server and I joined it, now I barely used it but I would see announcements for certain games and get technical support once in a while but here's where I get banned... So it's June and Pride month starts, they announce that for pride month they are adding pronoun tags, so the server explodes because they did an (@) Everyone tagging the whole server, it erupts into chaos as tons of people flood the general chat with their opinions I viewed the general chat for a bit, laughed and didn't think too much of it, just thinking it was funny seeing thousands of people being banned all within such a short period of time for bursting out with very stupid and vulgar hate.

But I come back the next day to see if the chat is still being flooded by people mad about such a small update to the server and if people were still getting banned, the chat had slowed down but even 24 hours later people were still talking about it in the general chat and one person said this and I paraphrase "gay people shouldn't have rights, the world was better in the 1950's generation" now I normally don't feel a need to type within these chats or insert myself, but this was such a horrible take/opinion I felt the urge to be a little sarcastic to show how stupid they were being. So I simply said "Yeah, human rights suck, we should all just go back to the stone age, that was the best generation" Now for you reading this right now, because you have an at least partially working brain, you can understand that was clearly sarcasm in disagreement with that person's ideals, but, I was banned and when I reached out through the mod mail, according to a PlayStation Discord Moderator I was "trolling" and could reapply to join back after 6 months. This might be one of the dumbest reasons I was banned for something. I didn't say anything against anyone, I didn't spread hate, and I didn't break any rules I was just sarcastic to a homophobe and was banned for it.

And this was technically my first message on the server ever, sure I sent a few messages in the technical support area asking a few questions, but I don't really count that, this was the first time I ever really spoke on the server and I was banned for it. There was no way I was going to stay in a "banned people" server for 6 months to appeal, and I didn't want the mod mail in my contact list, so I removed them and there is officially no way for me to ever join back, not that I'd even want to at this point.

Thank you, and I'm out! (*throws a smoke bomb and runs away*)

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if it is, there's always at least one bad apple, and you know the saying "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch" According to another person who responded to me, that server is terrible, clearly the people in charge seem to not have a hold of things.

I was temporarily banned for a week from my 2nd oldest account due to arguing with a random in PlayStation home and especially when I joined his private studio. He had all his buddies ready to report me. I left that account in danger of being banned again but permanently. This was like 10-11 years ago.

Seen someone get a ban on this site for having an anime girl as a profile picture, one that was considerably more clothed than many anime girls tend to be, banned for porn or something, don't remember the exact bs reason that was given but I do remember that it was the single dumbest thing that I have seen in over 20 years of being active on internet forums, and that is saying something.

As for myself, I once ate a ban in an MMO for "griefing" another player, on a pvp server, when the player whos day I ruined was running a farming bot. If you killed a player like 3 times he would get this protection bubble that stopped him from being attacked for quite a while, but there were other ways to redirect the character from his path. I kept throwing the character off a cliff so he would uselessly run into the obstacle instead of auto farming the ingredients away from other players. Did that a few times and was reported by the guy, dumbfuck in charge actually gave me a temporary ban for it, told him to sniff less glue and do his freaking job so that the users don't have to, because that bot was around for over a week before we started fucking with it.

I don't believe that to be the case. They might have resulted in getting a WP that put them over the 3 or 4 point threshold for a 1 day or 1 week suspension, or 5 points for a complete ban, but 1 or 2 WPs don't do anything extra like that. Normally a profile pic is just removed and a message sent to the person informing them it wasn't appropriate, but if they continued to put pics like that up then a WP might have been the result. They wouldn't have just got a WP immediately, and certainly not a ban or suspension just for that.

From what I know it happened to be the last WP required for the permaban. A cynical person might suspect that it was merely a (pretty stupid) pretext to get that last missing WP delivered, especially given the complete lack of anything explicit shown in the picture, but of course anything like that would just be speculation :hmm:

From my own time as trial moderator in the forum for a German browsergame about a decade back I can totally attest to mods being completely and utterly above doing such a thing...

Got (temporarily) banned a few times from the mall for doing insanely stupid mall rat stuff as a kid.  We'd manage to run away most of the time but caught a few bans.  Offenses included running around in the back halls, stalling the elevators, building 30' straws and drinking out of the fountain from the 2nd level, "borrowing" the mall wheel chairs, dropping ketchup cups from the 2nd level, shopping kart wars, etc etc.  I was a gentleman on the internet at least.

I'm also banned for life from the only Casino in my city, for drunkenly falling across a roulette table. (Over a decade ago). Overshare.

So I'm not the only one! I once got a 1 year ban from my local Casino probably 7-8 years ago for fighting a dude at the roulette table (it's always at the roulette tables!) lol. I was pretty drunk and so was the dude and he was claiming I took one of his chips and was pretty adamant about it (definitely didn't). Guy was seated next to me and started yelling and stood up pretty aggressively, and I don't know about you guys but if you make any aggressive gestures towards me and I'm drunk we're fighting point blank. Pushed the guy over his stool and and got 1 swing in before we got swarmed by all the pit bosses and they kicked us both out. Luckily no one got arrested but I was fully prepared to go to jail for that one lol.

That was back in my 20's when I was about that life, now I'm in my mid 30's so I try not to put myself in those situations anymore. I keep my ass at home and trophy hunt instead of fucking around getting into shit like that now a days.

I've never been banned or kicked before on any PS game. I don't fire shots over PSN messaging, be needlessly toxic on the mic/troll in-game or make any enemies so I don't really have to worry about things coming to bite me in that sense, maybe I might have been kicked out of a Battlefield server or two if I've done particularly well if the server owner is that way inclined, but that kind of thing doesn't hurt enough to really remember any specific examples.

I often don't really buy it most of the time when some people claim they get banned for 'no reason' or a 'silly reason' they didn't deserve. There are some examples of mistake bans that may seem common because they get a lot of attention/documentation on social media/forums etc. but often I find most other people just don't share what REALLY happened and just aren't willing to accept their actions have consequences (or just never read the rules to begin with to know what they did does clearly violate them). People will be like 'a guy was yelling abuse at me and I said stop and I got banned, wtf?!' then their party chat gets posted or something and it turns out the guy claiming to be the victim actually instigated the argument and was yelling the 'n' word like 50 times xD

One piece of unfair moderation I have seen though is more the other way (I know, all of this is a bit of a sidetrack). It's when people seem to get a free pass for things that anyone else would be banned for. A recent example I had was I had a few odd PSN messages. First one was promoting a scam so I reported it and it was dealt with. Happened again, it was a different scam, reported it... 'sorry this doesn't breach our ToS'. What was the difference? First was a level 1 default smiley face throwaway account, 2nd guy had an active and fairly high level account. Now this might not be the full story, maybe there's a difference between why the content was moderated in those messages themselves rather than the fact they were linking to scams but from my perspective it looked like one was given more leniency. But hey, that's life, like when celebrities or social media influencers don't get banned for obvious ToS violations 'cus they're 'famous'.

As for me getting any bans, outside of PSN I have been temporarily banned/muted in Runescape in my younger years. I've also been banned from Club Penguin but honestly who hasn't? I've also been banned from a handful of gaming related forums in my younger years and off the top of my head I remember one was about Pokemon and another Crash Bandicoot. I did also get banned from one site chatroom as a kid but then in later years became a trusted moderator in that same community which I always thought was an interesting little redemption arc xD but much of this I don't remember enough to tell a story.

Oh, and I got in trouble at school for hacking an older students personal website and plastering penises all over it. It's not a 'ban' as such but it feels relevant and very stupid xD

Thing is, by the time I got a PS3 and had started played online on PSN I was already at college so the likelihood of getting into any silliness and drama over the network is just much lesser as I'd already grown out of all that. I don't troll people for 'fun' or try to argue back against any sore losers sending a hate message, I don't cheat/hack, I just enjoy playing my games and chat to folk or give comms etc.

I wish I had more stories, it can be fun to reflect on the stupid things you do as a kid but most of it was probably on completely unknown websites I don't even remember.
