How good is NFS Unbound?

23 posts in this topic

Hi guys,

So this new NFS game is out and seems quite popular. I have played every single one in the past years, but I can't find the fun I had on PS3 NFS games (Hot Pursuit was from far my favourite and I jumped on the remaster).

How is the game? I want to plat the game but I don't want "this trophy is lame" opinions please, only comments related to the gameplay. Is it worth buying it now? Waiting for a sale? Avoid the game?

Thank you :)

The worst nfs in years.

Super grind progression.

AI rubberbanding to oblivion.

Police boring to escape.

The plot and dialogues are a cringe fest.

And for the plat  takes more time searching collectibles than racing itself

I have played all of the recent Need for Speed games, and I have to say this one is good. In my opinion it is better than Need for Speed Payback, but not better than Need for Speed Heat. It is between. Like any Need for Speed game, I am having a blast with it, starting out with a B tier car, upgrading it and so on. In terms of trophy difficulty, doesn't seem that bad, just the collectibles, but I trying to get as much as I can out of the way while driving to races, I would recommend doing all the online trophies first, just incase in the future the game will be dead online.

Not seeing any of this personally. After upgrading I'm miles ahead of the competition. And there's plenty of ways to earn cash superfast. The collectibles were a bit annoying but grabbing most when I pass them between races...maybe a couple of hours cleanup on the rest when done

The only other NFS game that I have played is Heat which I got free on PS Plus so I can't speak on how Unbound compares to the older games in the series, but I've been having a lot of fun with it. The gameplay strongly encourages you to play a variety of events with a variety of cars since in the story mode there are a limited number of events available each day, and once you finish an event you can't replay again that day. The police chases are challenging, but not so challenging that it feels unforgiving. The customization and tuning is about the same as it was in Heat with the exception that you are able to tune how much a car is setup for drift or grip in the tuning menu instead of it being locked to parts. Speaking of grip, it's actually good in this game. Like, really good  if you can drive well. Handling and performance is a lot better than it was in Heat as well.

I haven't played any multiplayer yet so idk what that is like, but based solely on the singleplayer experience so far I would say it's worth buying now if you think you're going to have fun with it. I hesitated at first because the $70 USD price tag was a bit much, but I've been playing it non stop since it came out pretty much.

For me it's a really funny game and i love it! I played couple of hours and the customization of the cars is insane.

I played all NFS games but i have to say that i'm missing the garage feeling from heat. In that aspect heat was way better for me.

The police chases are really fun in this game. I would like if they patch a little bit more into this. For example some sort of pursuit breaker like in NFS MW in 2005 would make it better.

I've enjoyed it for the most part, it has the occasional "Criterion BS", which I guess is just Rubberbanding AI (though it always seems more annoying in Criterion's games I've found 🤷‍♂️) and the 3 Star activities, always hated them since they were introduced (maybe another game did it first but I dunno) in Forza Horizon 3... Horizon 1 & 2 were perfect since it was just for fun imo

Just got the remaining Bear and Street Art Collectables next and I've got the Platinum. Can't wait till it's done cause I'm gonna turn on my Xbox 360 and replay NFS Most Wanted '05/Carbon/Prostreet/Undercover (get some Achievements, only Undercover out of those had Trophys and I've Platinumed that already on PS3... Also did the 1000G in Most Wanted '05 like over a decade ago) if anything just for the vibe and OSTs, the OST in Unbound is pretty crap (though a step up from 2015/Payback/Heat at least)

Being a huge fan of NFS MW (2005) especially for its police chases, how good is that one? Last one I played was Rivals which was meh. I also loved NFS MW 2012 and Hot Pursuit (2010)

Am i the only one who thinks that online is way to low content? You drive the same playlists over and over again without any kind of diversity... I played about 6 hours online today and its already so boring..

for me: i like it!

the story is not an oscar worth, but for a racing game i liked it. i like the comic effects and the style of the game at all. for me it's an good arcade racing game.

the online part is at the moment very boring. i've the feeling, that there's missing so much... unfortunately.

I like the game. It might not have the weight of a triple A title, hence the discount already. But, honestly, my expectations were not that high, especially after NFS Heat, and I was pleased to find it actually better in many aspects than the previous title: storyline & design (to my taste), gameplay, in-game economy mechanics, etc. For example, nitrous system has been made more interesting with the additional meter which adds more variety and makes boosting a bit more strategic.

Cops are far easier to escape from compared to Heat. They are really a joke for somebody who’ve platinumed that previous game. But I suppose the logic was to make them more like a nuisance than a real challenge; or maybe the devs simple responded to the outcry of frustrated fans who’d found Heat cops so tough. I’m not sure, though, that, if you play it on the highest difficulty, cops will be that easy.

Speaking of difficulty levels, I don’t get it. You are not encouraged to play on medium or hard: no difficulty trophies and no meaningful additional rewards (like in Project Cars). It could have been done better if players were rewarded for their skill. When you see a difficulty select menu, there are explanations that are supposed to guide your choice. Initially I’ve gone for a balanced experience because the easiest level was explained like a walk in a park and because I’ve previously completed Heat. Thanks God you can switch the difficulty at any time and choose the lowest one for the rest of the game. It won’t be as relaxing as you might be led to believe.

So the game is not bad, but I totally get hard core fans of the franchise because the golden years of NFS are long gone and given the direction the EA is taking, a comeback to something like Most Wanted is not going to happen.

Pros:

  • Quality open world
  • Decent range of cars
  • Community features (sharing visual skins)
  • Racing routes
  • Story style is palatable for me (unlike NFS reboot/NFS Payback). Probably the most meaningful one since Carbon and Most Wanted (PS2). Most characters are all right to me.
  • Relatively decent optimised compared to NFS Heat

Cons:

  • The music
  • This happens rarely in online mode but the traffic pops up outta nowhere which fucks up your intended driving line = collision risk.
  • The rubber-banding is a real sonofabitch in Normal and Hard.

Lol, there's literally absence of rubberbanding. You're in a faster car - no one will pass you, maybe only with nitrous or slipstream.

Google unbound + rubberbanding

There's huge rubberbanding in unbound period

AI reduces 400m on 5 seconds with the player on full speed without losing momentum

Honestly, quite disappointing.

Game itself is OK, but story is extremely short and online will take a couple of hours to complete (if you find a decent server without "cheaters" or hackers)

Played most NFS games but think this 1 will be the last I played, unless I'm really bored :P

Could have done more to the story and make online somewhat interesting.

Again a letdown Like Heat, Maps repeat in an endless circle, music is absolutely hideous, Lack of Cars, cringe Dialouge.

The worst offence in this one is having multiplayer and singleplayer completely seperate. Any cars you get in the campaign you can't use any of that online. Start again from fresh. And get used to getting destroyed if you're just starting out because others have better cars and parts. Stock cars won't help as they're lower too lol.

So a bit of a grind to get money and level the play field.

The visual art is nice but I prefer the last game.
