[EVENT] PSNP Kaleidoscope Challenge! 2023 [ENDED]

It's update time..... Which invariably means it's also time for me to make some stupid comment about one side looking more naked than the other side.... but erm.... It's looking pretty even right now, so I suppose, I'm going to have to go back for another old faithful....

 

Isn't it satisfying seeing those slots get filled in .....

Anyway, last time I was here it was for a Red, this time.... It's White getting it's slot filled, with Kona, an interesting little indie mystery adventure game - I really resent calling it a walking simulator, because it really isn't one particularly.

 

It's pretty interesting though - and I must admit the world in which the game exists is very cleverly  crafted..... It's got some real charm to it.... And despite the game having a pretty sedentary pace, and I expect still would even if you were driving instead of walking. However, unravelling the mystery is very interesting.... and the protagonist Carl Faubert's dry, yet witty Film-Noir inspired internal monologues can be a real delight sometimes.... With the occasional misfire here and there from the scriptwriters.... Maybe I'm being a little bit of a fanny (It's happened once or twice before ) but, ask yourself this..... Could you see an old man in the 70's no less, saying the words legit? Seems.... a little unlikely, but it's not even a problem, just something I noticed.

 

It's definitely worth a look if you can pick it up cheap, or play it whilst it's still on PSPlus Extra for the next five days.

 

I guess I'll see you all again whenever I fill in that Light Green with Yooka-Laylee! Unless the sudden fit takes me to play something else, which let's face it, does happen on occasion ?..... I'm sure it'll still appear here in some form!

For light blue, I played Gravity Rush 2.

 

I played the first game last year and enjoyed it a lot. Unfortunately I can't say the same for this sequel. While the gameplay and characters were still awesome, the grind required for this platinum made it unfun a lot of the time. Many of the side missions are annoying to get done because the game forces you into stealth mode. Also some are just unnecessarily long for no reason imo. The Gem Collector trophy is what took me the longest.. I don't remember having to grind so hard for gems in the previous game. But this game had me spending an additional week grinding for gems after finishing the main story. Overall, still a good game I just prefer the prequel.

Two new games on the card and two more legendary Pokemon in Palkia(Generation 4) and Zekrom(Generation 5)! While Black did not get an RPG, so I am a fraud and cannot call this my RPG Rainbow, I feel that the game represented needs some more publicity since it has been features on Games Done Quick. Before that, I forgot to put on Final Fantasy II. Great game but a bit grindy. Also, a lot of characters die.

Updating with my #151 and LIGHT BLUE with Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom.

Was a pretty good play, anime style hack n slash platformer, not to hard. Sometimes frustrating, but great characters.

Glad you enjoyed it. That game was pretty cool and I ended up revisiting it when they brought out the PS5 port just because. The PS4 version was my 3rd platinum and the PS5 version was my 175th.

Third game done: Mafia! This remake is fantastic. I absolutely love the Original but this remake is also very good, you can find a more detailed opinion here: 

They released a more "classic UI" option via patch after I played the EU stack, so I decided to come back 2.5 years later and play it again on the NA stack to see if it improved the game for me (and to also be able to use it as a game here, it would be a shame to not have it on the chart) and, yes, it is better but not perfect, there are still too many markers for a true classic feeling. Most of the stuff I mention in the above linked thread is still true. But overall, it is still a very great experience. However, I kind of hope they will also release the Original with trophies as a PS classic some day.

I've completed The Ascent for another double dip in the two challenges I participate this year, and to be honest...

I don't know why Cyberpunk 2077 was pulled from the store, but shit like this can stay. I know it's the first game of the studio but honestly, it's so buggy.

First of all, the PS4 version of the game is a gamble to even start. 2 out of 3 starts I just get a blackscreen when booting up the game. And if you manage to start the game, it crashes every 10 - 15 minutes.

On top of that, stupid me made the mistake to upgrade another weapon to max before upgrading the first weapon I upgrade to max, which bugged the Max Weapon trophy, adding another half of a playthrough to my struggles.

 

Next up I'm planning to play GTA SA for Light Green.

Sounds rough, shame you had such a poor experience with it, because there’s a good game in there if you didn’t have to put up with such frustrations.

 

Just to mention - At the other end of the spectrum I played a physical copy on PS5 and didn’t encounter any issues so I ended up feeling like it was one of the better games I played in 2022

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter for Tan. I decided to finally get around to this game before it left plus last month (I just took ages to update here). It was an interesting game, I didn’t know what to expect, but I wasn’t expecting so many horror themes. I was a little disappointed with the ending, it was fine, but I would have enjoyed more adventures of Detective Paul Prospero

 

Then I played a bunch of games with black, brown or grey images, which I might use in a future rainbow if I finish this one.

 

I played Gone Home for Deep Purple. This was a very enjoyable walking sim with some actually challenging trophies. The 1 minute speed run was especially fun to try for and I really enjoyed listening to the directors commentary. I remember watching my partner play this when it first came out and just thinking why would anyone play a game where you just walk? Jokes on past me, I’ve played 3 walking simulators this year alone.

 

Finally, I got around to doing the New Game plus trophies for Spider-Man for my Red square, something I always meant to do eventually and got the push I needed when it was announced it would be removed from plus extra this month. (I originally played it through ps now when it was a limited time game there)

 

Next up should be Man of Medan for White, but I know how distracted I can get so we’ll see

So I now have half of the FF Pixel Remasters complete and half of my second card done. The third iternation was pretty good after I just stopped watching videos on how to overpower yourself and just played the game with 4x EXP on... and even then it wasn't enough to get me to Level 99 like it was in FF1. I think I ended on Level 70 on my characters, mainly because ethers and cottages do not exist in this game and they went back to spell charges, so any mages you create have to carefully manage their spells. I ran a White Mage until I got Devout and also ran a mostly-melee group of Knight, Black Belt and Thief because the Thief does a ton more damage than the Black Belt because he's so fast.

 

But all bets were off when I unlocked the final jobs - two Ninja, two Sage baby! And when I found the shops in Eureka I spent all my money on Shuriken and just spammed them on the final bosses along with Bahamut. I did have to Curaja a few times to avoid dying but nothing was too bad in the World of Darkness.

 

I want to buy the rest of the Remasters but I am buying them piece meal and trying to save up for a Vita replacement. Seriously, I need to finish Sly 2.

I also had a horrible time playing the PS5 version earlier. 
might be just my luck, but it’s not really something I can look past if it’s either easily recreated or should have never made it past QA in the first place. 
for example: I’ve played the PS5 version as the second player, and after every single loading screen, my HUD was completely gone, my friend had to tell me when using my healing skills.  Sometimes even my whole textures. I’ve ran through pitch black screens because the next objective was only a few meters away. 
 

So yea, sadly a completely horrible gaming experience for myself.

Marvel's Midnight Suns  - Yellow

I have such a complicated relationship with this game.  On the one hand, this game is FUN.  I love the combat, I like interacting with everyone, and I think playing the Hunter is really fun.  But on the other hand it's buggy, poorly optimized and has the needlessly grindy trophy (light/dark balance).  But overall I really liked it.  It was great to see some unusual Marvel faces, even if I think a few of the 'popular' heroes were shoehorned in to make it more popular.  And some of the 3d models were...weird.  I think the artists need to take a good long look at some human hands.  Overall, though, it was a good experience.

I wanted to use Code Vein as my brown, it's not the best, that's why I was a bit hesitant, guess I only marked it in my head, whoops.

Last week was very productive popping platinums I was really close to, meaning my current status is as it follows:

I also platinumed Dirt 5, however it looks to me it doesn't really fit the remaining colors (maybe Maroon, but I think it suits Orange/Pink more, which are already filled up)

Here's another update from me:

 

 

The new game on here is Outer Wilds on black. Very fitting when you spend so much of the game in black surrounding space. 

 

When I started this challenge, I did not think much as to it being difficult filling the list with different colours, but now I only fill about 1/3 or something of the games I play to the list. I guess it should have been obvious to me that it would not be that easy. I could also have filled the black spot with Alien: Isolation, but in the end I chose Outer Wilds because holy moly, that's a great game. 

 

I will not spoil anything about the game of course, I had only a small part spoiled for me, and to experience that game is truly something that will take some time to forget. It's hard to describe what makes it so good without spoiling it, and honestly I think everyone who praises it likes it for very personal reasons. It's one of those games, like my last update with Superliminal, that I've been seeing around and heard praised that everyone should play, but I just thought it wasn't for me. And then I started playing it and thought, okay this isn't for me. But I stuck to my gut and stuck with the game because I heard that's how it feels at first, and you have to get into Outer Wilds. And I really tried powering through some of the opening and playing as intended, exploring etc. It wasn't until a certain thing happened for me, which I won't spoil, that I was completely hooked and couldn't put the game away. The exploration is really great, and in my eyes the way of progressing by knowing more of the world is amazing. The way that you can learn a piece of information, which can then guide your exploration to previously unknown territories. After I've played Outer Wilds I've really realised why every YouTuber writing game essays have made a video on Outer Wilds. The journey is so personal, and something you truly want to share, but the journey is also so enjoyably due to not knowing anything hence why every video intro on Outer Wilds is just one long spoiler warning. And I really get it. This is a game where you really wish you could experience it for the first time again, for me at least. It's in the same way as your first souls game, and the journey to learning how to overcome that kind of game. Your first souls game is truly a great experience, and the first time playing through a new souls game, that is not your first, is also a great journey. The games are still great after, but you will never get the same experiences in subsequent playthroughs. Outer Wilds takes this to the max, and subsequent playthroughs get practically trivial. In my eyes there are some games everyone should get to experience, and Outer Wilds is definitely on the list for me.

In regards to the trophies, I really liked that they are mostly not story related at all. They are mostly all related to things that are not relevant to the progression through the game, which makes them some fun challenges to try to complete. I really had some fun trying to get some of these, however some of them are also very difficult without guides, I'm looking at you model rocket...

I think this is all I can say about how amazing I think the game is, without actually telling why I think it's so amazing. Moral of this story is go buy the game and try it out for yourself. You will thank yourself for sticking through with it and investing your time in it and being patient with it.

Hello there!

 

It's been a long time since I updated my kaleidoscope but I'm now a Rainbow Appreciator (so I thought it was time to stop procrastinating and post a little something ?)!

 

 

I'm not quite fond of Cat Quest II as a Yellow (I plan on changing it, Cuphead as been on my "to buy" list for too long) and I'm not sure if Helvetii as Green is ok ; I'd understand if it looked more fit for grey honestly, but the reflects kinda make me see it mostly green I guess?

Anyway, here comes some little reviews 'cause why not :

White - Chicory

      I had so much trouble with this game that I have to admit I was glad when the platinum finally popped. Had to play it twice because Marzipan wouldn't give me one of the painting (no idea why, the gardening cat one glitched) AND I got a loooot of bugs during my first playthrough (seems like it was my fault tho ; deleting my save in order to replay it made the game work smoothly). Anyway, a good game I couldn't really enjoy because of those, event though I'm not really an artistic person and that probably didn't help either.

Yellow - Cat quest II

      Loved the first one and liked this one. Fun little game overall, even though it was too similar to the firt one, story-wise, in my opinion. Probably will not leave it here.

Red - Virginia

      Could it be more red? Not sure if I'm gonna keep this one either ; I did enjoy it but I feel it's kinda of an "easy pick" here. I'll probably play Onee Chanbara Origins at some point and replace it. Anyway the story-telling was interesting and I really got involved in it during my first playthrough.
Pink - Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX

      No platinum eh? Well, I'll blame this one on my significant other. Seeing him play Gunvolt Azure Striker made me want to try it too, and this one was perfect for Pink! It's not an easy type of game in my opinion (even though the 100% here actually IS easy) but I had a lot of fun replaying some levels. I'll probably try some other games of this genre at some point.

Maroon - Afterimage

      This box I actually did twice. I was waiting for Afterimage, pre-ordered it, but was unsure the Game Image would fit so I played Sundered just in case. I loved both games, but Afterimage is far more Maroon than Sundered. I just loved Afterimage, all of it, and I can't wait for the DLCs. I enjoyed the story, understanding it bit by bit, the game overall if sooo beautifully hand-drawn and I'll admit I keep listening to some soundtracks still. If you like Metroidvanias I'd say just go for it !

Purple - Fe

      In my opinion there's enough light purple in there to not put it in the darker box, correct me if I'm wrong. This one has been waiting in my library for the longest time and I didn't know much about the game, I saw the little Fe creature and I just had to buy it ?. I had a lot of fun in this one, even though some crystal are not easy to find, all this creatures were so cute!

Light Blue - LEGO Harry Potter Collection: Years 1-4

      My very first LEGO video game. Had to be Harry Potter for it has been such an important saga in my youth. I enjoyed it, even though it seemed quite long toward the end, and even though the "LEGO humour" is not what I usually enjoy, it was fun. Will not play another LEGO game for quite some time, but I'll probably go for others at some point.

Green - Helvetii

      Another little indie game, I was really curious when I learned about a game about Celtic mythology. Kinda afraid when I read it was categorize as "roguelike", but I had a lot of fun on this one too ! There is so much to do and try with the game, it's not really punitiv, I would say it probably sharpened my patience nonetheless, but it was a great experience. I'm definitely not ready for The Binding of Isaac tho!

Brown - LEGO Harry Potter Collection: Years 5-7

      Well I could not do Years 1-4 and not Years 5-7, could I?

Next color should be grey, unless I get too salty and lose patience. ? See you then!

Coming in with a very late update and this officially put me at 3 completed games! Need to step it up if I want to complete this challenge...

I've got Multiversus for red. Got really addicted to this game for about two months, then kinda just used this as a game between games. Happy I stuck with it though, would have sucked not to get the plat before them shutting down the open beta. Found myself playing mostly as Taz and Bugs Bunny.

 

And then I'm hoping Metal Hellsinger will work for Maroon! An absolute gem of a game and I had a blast! Great soundtrack with short but fun levels, and the only annoying part was the bosses but only because they got a bit repetitive. Otherwise I enjoyed every second of it.
