Do you consider yourself a 'rare' trophy hunter?

Hello,

Slightly odd topic perhaps, but hopefully you'll be good enough to humour me...

I'm a freelance writer, specialising in videogame writing - I write for a number of high-profile publications, including GameSpot, The Telegraph, The Escapist, Videogamer and many more.

One of my editors has tasked me with exploring the world of the 'trophy hunters', specifically those people that take particular satisfaction from attaining the rarest of trophies.

If anyone here considers themselves part of this group, I would appreciate it enormously if you would be open to discussing your trophy goals, the trophies that you've found most difficult to attain, why you're interested in rare trophies and why you have the rare the trophies you have - are they from games you really like, or have you hunted them down because they're rare and difficult?

Would be wonderful to set up a dialogue either here, or we can talk more privately via email or Skype or whatever works for you.

Thank you.

Well, I have many rare trophies my friends don't have. So there goes the challange. But most of those rare trophy are so damn time consumers. I guess that tests my patience to achieve something. Not because I want to be in some top ranking -- simply just a collector.

I'm relatively new to the PSN, having moved from Xbox when the PS4 came out.

I don't have a huge trophy collection just yet, but enjoy hunting them out.

I don't know what you mean by "rarest" trophies?  Is that rare according to how many people have them total, or what proportion of those who own that particular game have them?  (e.g. a dead easy but rubbish game that sells 50 copies, even if everyone who owned it got that game's platinum trophy, it wouldn't be particularly prestigious, but it would still be rare.)

Happy to be involved if you want an opinion from someone just starting out on amassing their collection.

Basically you take the amount of people that own a certain game and pick out a trophy and if less then 5% of the people that own that game has the trophy then its ultra rare. So closer to 0% the rarer it is

In terms of 'rare' I am talking about rarity in terms of how many people have a certain trophy in relation to how people own that games - much like how LeonXilofin has explained.

However, the caveat to that is that my article/s can only really discuss games that are somewhat popular. Readers will not be interested in reading about trophies for games that have only sold 50 copies, as it's unlikely they own the games themselves, know anyone that owns it or (perhaps) have even heard of it. While it might be fun to investigate such games, there's an audience to think about.

If anyone here would be interested be answering some questions then it may be easiest to PM me via PSN @ Workablemeat - however I am grateful for, and will be following up on, the suggested points of contact some of you pointed out. I appreciate your expertise in that area.

Yeah, I know that's how PSN calculates rarity, but on a more "global" scale, you could imagine some hunters looking at some tiny, unpopular and obscure game and deciding to get the plat, just because they might be the only person on the planet to do so.  I was just checking what the OP wanted cuz I'm sure that there must be hunters out there who look for the obscure games to boost their trophy count.

Ok, so your definition is basically the same as PSN's criteria.  Just wanted to clarify.  Thanks.

As another angle to your article, I know some people get their kicks from being the first person to platinum a new game once it comes out.  On another forum I was speaking to someone who reckoned he was 16th to platinum South Park recently.  He was miffed by the fact that the US releases games on a Tuesday because, as he was in the EU, if he had been able to play it 4 days earlier he felt he might have been higher up.

I like trophies PERIOD...fun to obtain and a sense of accomplishment and makes my game purchases worth it, (unless the game has an amazing story then that will make my purchase worth it too)

Trophies are trophies kiddies, games are meant to be played for fun. Its funny and entertaining to see so how many of these trophy hunter posts are on this site everytime i come here. Hey...guess what? Nobody gives a fck if you have lets say over 100 plats or something...xD. It doesn't prove that youre special. Only thing it proves you have nolife whatsoever sitting on your ass in home and probably with your mommy shouting at her ( Wheres my pancake and sweetpuffs?! ) Yeah well...you know what i mean. What im trying to say here fellas at the end of the day theyre just games...i mean damn why yall take them so seriosly with these trophies? But yeah thats all. Someone needed to say this. Oh and nope im not english but hey if your a grammar nazi...go ahead :) Have a nice day kids.

I think if you would bother to actually read HARD_ANGEL_FAN's post (which you quoted) you would have noted that he derives fun from achieving trophies.

Different strokes for different folks mate, there's no need to go casting aspersions or speculating on how he treats his mother just because you happen to disagree.

You're just starting to collect trophies on that account.  You hang around here long enough and the bug may bite you too.

What makes trophies fun is the challenge they bring, especially the "rare" trophies. There is nothing wrong with wanting to accumulate trophies. At the end of the day, sure trophies don't mean a whole lot, but once you get a trophy that was a monster to go through, you feel deeply and extremely satisfied.

And I just straight up laughed at your mom comment. You have no idea of what you speak. I am relatively new here, but I am willing to bet the majority of everyone on here has more of a life than you. I mean, you have nothing better to do than to attempt to berate people who enjoy achieving trophies? (and you failed miserably at your attempt, by the way)

Enjoy playing your games. If you aren't into the trophy collecting, so be it. But there is nothing wrong with liking the trophy hunt.

After having read all that I have to wonder why you would sign up and register on a site like this in the first place unless you came here to troll. 95% of everything on this site is trophy related, don't be the guy that hates baseball, goes to a baseball game and then gets upset when everyone there is only concerned with baseball (not the greatest analogy but its what i had at the time).

Nurse? He's gotton on the forums again!

Dude, cool off, some like hunting some don't - Im not some basement dweller, im 30, and have a wife, kid on the way, friends and a job that pays more in an hour than my peers make in a day. I just happen to love games, and like to try to excel at the things I enjoy.

Hence, trophies :)

Don't worry, you'll manage to get some one of these days ;)

Well i have about 15 plats but i dont mind getting over 100 like you. If i happen to like the story of the game and see if its not so time consuming plat then im going for it, but the point is i dont aim for the plat of every game i play...like you. Trophies are just these sidefun things in gaming and you shouldnt take them so seriosly ;)

Wouldn't it be nice to also have a view from a non trophy hunter?

Surely that will then give a balanced insight into trophy hunting (for and against).

If so, I would answer any questions you have

I agree!

This is exactly the way I look at trophies and platinums!

But that's a vital point to the information you are trying to gather. A lot of the rare trophies aren't just due to someone getting  a bunch of trophies that are simply difficult to obtain...many times it is also due to getting moderately easy  trophies to games that not as many people are playing. This would not make them any more or LESS of a "rare" trophy hunter. By not telling that part of the story, you may be leaving out a huge chunk on the mindset of individuals that make up that community.
