The best examples of Touchpad integration

87 posts in this topic

Straight to the point, I want to comprise a list of games on PS4 that use the Touchpad and how they use it. Then we can see which ones use it most effectively. Any games you add, I'll edit into the primary list here. So, post any I've missed or correct any I might have wrong. Here we go:

UPDATE: It's been a while since this topic was seen... Can we revive it? There must be loads to add with all the new games... Just tell me how the touchpad is used in various games (that aren't already on the list) and I'll add them into this first post with your name.

UPDATE 2: I've re-ordered the games so they're listed alphabetically. It'll be easier to see which games are already listed. Trickier when they're listed randomly.

I think Assassins' Creed IV also used it to open and scroll the map.

Killzone: Shadowfall used it to swap between the OWL's functions.

So far, I don't think anyone has used it particularly well; everything seems to put touchpad functionality in where a context sensitive "action" button would do (e.g. Infamous: SS) or simply as a shortcut to a weapon wheel or menu (e.g. Killzone: Shadowfall).

Oh, Rayman Legends used it to scrub those scratch cards. Actually, I do think that was a good use for it as the physical action imitated what was being done on screen, and it felt natural.

Warframe - 4 gestures (up/down/left/right) for 4 actions (4 powers by default).

Probably it's the best use of touchpad when there're not enough buttons...

Thanks. I've added those to the list. Try to be as detailed as possible. Remember, I haven't played the games you're referencing. I've only played the games I listed. The best touchpad use for me was Stick it to the Man. Using the right stick wasn't too accurate, so I used the touchpad the whole game.

Just to clarify, the Touchpad in KZ: Shadowfall didn't open the weapon wheel, it just swapped OWL functions. I was saying that its implementation was in place of a weapon wheel.

I'm not just after the best examples, I'm after all games that use it, so we can see and compare. I'll add it in....

Injustice: Gods Among Us uses it for some QTE cut scenes. Although this is optional and alot easier with button combinations!

Not really a fan of it. Seems awkward to get to in intense moments. Looking at you Killzone. Think I could get my OWL to do stun those guys with shields quick enough!? Erm. No. Course that's just me.

A Realm Reborn: Can be used as a virtual mouse, dragging the cursor around, or locked to being a button which when pressed rapidly navigates between multiple on screen interfaces. Mastering it makes the game so much easier to deal with. I feel that this toggle between two different navigation types for an MMO is a pretty good example of touch pad use.

Fifa lets you take control of the keeper and I think alter the viewing angle of the pitch

Skylanders Swap Force - opens character screen.

Thanks guys, all added in. If I've interpreted anything incorrectly, let me know. :)  Let's keep this list going people, there must be more... :P

Starting to think that all of the PS4 titles use the Touchpad in some way. (Usually as a map button) It's like they thought hmmm what do we do with this thing!? Erm... stick a map on it!

FEZ uses it to open the map screen

In Destiny, the touchpad 'summons' the ghost companion. (Which shows you your objective, objective markers, and lets you return to orbit/spawn a vehicle)

Battlefield Hardline has the same feature as Battlefield 4

Sparkle 2, the game can be controlled entirely with the touch pad for aiming and shooting the orbs, it's actually better to control with touchpad than it is to use analogue stick and X button
