#218 - Assassin's Creed Unity 

 

 

I think it's a shame that Unity has that reputation of being the worst Assassin's Creed game, because honestly?? i think it's great. 

 

It's still buggy, feels like each NPC that you see in this game is taking 1 FPS from your performance, though it's nowhere near as bad as before. The story is meh, online's a pain, and there's 500+ collectibles for you to grab. But these are tolerable imo in exchange for what's not only the finest Assassin's Creed pre-Origins, but perhaps the finest open-world game of its time. Paris is the gold standard of the series, and the parkour system is the freest its ever been, with plenty of hidden techniques to learn. Couple that with the series finally having a sense of difficulty and a much deeper combat system than anything before or after. 

 

If you are thinking about getting this game, i think it is a safe bet, it's pretty cheap nowadays, so why not?!

Finally got sick of working on the backlog and decided to start something new!

 

I don't have too much to say about this game other than I quite enjoyed it. I liked the story, the graphics were solid and the combat was pretty excellent. This game is listed as an RPG but it's definitely more of just an action adventure since none of your choices really effect the outcome of the game. Can't wait for the next one!

Here it is! My first ever UR platinum

I'm really excited since I did struggle with this game in the beginning but managed to master it out and do all three playthroughs.

It's solid ARPG, reminded me on Titan Quest if anybody knows that but with a more linear story and Nordic setting.

For the platinum you need to do three playthroughs, one with a male or female character, a NG+ and a hardcore playthrough on the hardest settings including permadeath, man this was scary.

Time to plat: 60 hours for me.

 

Overall the game played really well on controller, like Diablo since you have a limited number of skills to use. Encountered some bugs, got stuck in the world some times and had to reloead checkpoints which was quite annoying when it happened but nothing game breaking overall.

The game punishes you if you only want to play the story. Even on lowest difficulty you are not able to do it without grinding some levels or you are going to be in big trouble.

Of course, I don't mind a grind in an ARPG.....NORMALLY BUT this game does an awful job in forcing you to level.

After finishing a story level you get to hunt x number of a certain enemy. It's just you play the exact level you just played over and over to grind some EXP (blood). It gets really boring considering you have to do this on 3 playthroughs. The level is always the same, not randomized like let's say Diablo. Even the enemies spawn in the exact same locations.

 

In the end I'm happy I did it and let's say I won't touch this one again

So, i got this as a sort of support purchase. The first version of this game on Steam, several years ago now, was being advertised by the creator on a small retro forum I posted on at the time. He'd been working on a newer, better version all this time and I couldn't help myself. Although I wasn't expecting a 10 minute platinum, I'm not surprised. He ever never into the whole idea of achievements, so I can see him just tossing some together for the submission. As for the game itself, it's fun and strangely challenging. Biggest problem is while each level is auto-scroll, so is your character apart from the screen. Both are always auto-scrolling, so landing on small platforms and then waiting there is extra difficult. Quick platinum aside, mild recommend for anyone who likes arcade type platformers.

Wew lads, can you believe it? I actually managed to clean up Dead Rising 2, just over ten years after first biting into this game. I didn't expect I'd ever get this done, what with the co-op Trophies and having to mow my way through 72,000 zombies - but now here we are.

 

Despite the grunt work for DR2 taking place in Vancouver, the original Japanese creators of the first game (including the then-famous and now-infamous Keiji Inafune) oversaw development and kept a tight leash on development studio Blue Castle Games, who would later be rechristened to Capcom Vancouver. The result was a game that still retained the quirks of its XBox 360-exclusive predecessor, but took a couple of bold steps forward; online co-op was added with the entirity of the game available to be played through alongside a friend, while an online multiplayer mode that pitted four players against one another in nine different zombie-slaying minigames made for a nice distraction from the main story.

 

You get to mess around in a brightly coloured and finely detailed sandbox full of stores and casinos freshly overrun by zombies, with a few survivors here and there to be rescued as you count down the minutes to the army rolling in to save you. However, you aren't just on a timer for story purposes; no, the clock is an actual gameplay element as all missions and events occur at certain times, with the player forced to pick and choose (or properly plan) what to complete. Don't reach a story mission in time? Wuh-woh, the truth is forever lost and you have mere hours left to live because the military is now just going to firebomb yer buttocks. Had to skip some survivors to reach the story? Yeah, those poor folk are dead next time you pass by their location.

 

As far as Trophies go, Dead Rising 2 (like its predecessor) has two iconic titles on its list; Z-Genocider 2: Genocide Harder and Zombie Genocide Master. The former started out as a fun challenge in the first game; it was set in a town with a population of 53,594 and you got an Xbox achievement for killing that exact number of zombies (meaning you basically eradicated the entire place). Valve referenced this with an achievement of their own in Left 4 Dead, asking you to kill 53,595 (going one better) - and Blue Castle upped the ante again by requiring 53,596 for Z-Genocider 2 in Dead Rising 2. Getting to that number means basically ignoring all the story missions and spending five hours grinding out kills by driving a SUV in circles around the sandbox' outdoor area, but those Canadian sadists figured the time you were given was way too generous for such a lowly number. As such, they also require you to kill 72,000 zombies for Zombie Genocide Master - and to unlock that you either have to be the best driver ever or combine the laps around the strip with actually doing the story missions to unlock 'Overtime' - an epilogue that grants you a few more precious minutes.

 

Zombie Genocide Master is obviously the biggest roadblock towards Platinum, but the rest of the list is quite cruel in a different way. There is online multiplayer, but for once I actually quite liked it and the three associated Trophies were quick and easy to unlock back when the servers were populated. Beyond that, those of you who dislike collect-a-thons better beware, because you have to get kills with all weapons, make all combo weapons, eat all types of food, mix all types of drinks, wear all articles of clothing, spray a series of specific posters, and visit every single store in the game for a bunch of Bronzes. Damn, son. I do love running around like a mindless ape doing all that (for real, I like it, especially in such a detailed world), but I fiercely disliked having to do the co-op Trophy that required you to finish all main story missions with a co-op partner. With a mix of randoms and boosting, I thankfully managed earlier today, meaning that I got to finish the list with a Trophy title that I doubt would ever be accepted into a game in 2020; Chuck Greene: Cross Dresser?. Yup, it requires you to wear all clothing items (including those intended for girls and women). Put the developers inbetween two slices of bread and you'd have a bigot sandwich for making light of such pastimes.

 

Overall, an Ultra Rare Platinum that is both challenging due to the Genocide Trophies and quite long-winded due to all the collectibles and having to sit through painful co-op experiences - the list features no fewer than nine Ultra Rares and seventeen Very Rares - but I am still quite proud to own it and do not regret starting the game way back when. For years I thought I would never manage to actually unlock the Platinum, but after my adventures over the past month attaining much harder Plats (Vanquish says hello), I got inspired and accomplished it. So inspired, in fact, that I timed this one to be my 75th Plat milestone. Never give up on your dreams, kids. Do give up on Dead Rising as a franchise though, because 3 was mediocre and XBONE exclusive, and Dead Rising 4 is barely functional - Capcom Vancouver was shut down in 2018, joining the increasingly impressive horde of zombie development studios.

I remember buying the game and the cashier being dubious about my age - I was only 17 and a half at the time and told him I forgot my ID. The two soccer moms in line behind me overheard and started joking 'oh, he does look so mature' 'yeah, he is definitely of age' and the guy let me walk out with my copy. Funny how you remember such, admittedly trivial, experiences even a decade later, huh?

This was long overdue. I had never played a Castlevania game going into this, even though I had played some Metroidvanias, which might sound a bit strange. I've been hearing about SOTN's high popularity for a number of years and I promised myself that I would play it someday. And I'm so glad I did. I was impressed with so many things about the game: the music, the map/level design and the huge variety of weapons, items, bosses and enemies. But most importantly, I had an absolute blast. Anyone who still hasn't gotten round to SOTN, I couldn't recommend it enough.

 

As for ROB, I wasn't very familiar with that game. It was a good thing that I played ROB first because I didn't really like it. It was quite hard at the beginning due to the clunky controls but got used to it eventually, abusing the quicksave feature really helped me ?. With all that being said, I can't complain about getting 2 games in 1 and it's still a worthy addition to anyone's collection.

Only took me 160 hours and 15 minutes spread across four playthroughs, but this plat is mine at last.  Not that it really improved my opinion of the game in the least bit.  Tales of Symphonia remains my least favorite Tales of game (and yes, I have played Legendia, but not Tempest) and me getting the plat was to be quite honest mostly because I'm a completionist but also deep down so no one can say I haven't given the game enough of a chance.  Just can't recommend this one.  It hasn't aged well and there are far better entries in the series to me.

 

This just makes me wish we could get ports of Eternia and Abyss to PS4 or PS5 so I can go plat games in the series I actually like.  I'd so be up for another round of either of those.

Plat #181: Vacation Simulator (PS4 VR)

 

Sequel to "Job Simulator", I found this game to be a bit disappointing compared to its predecessor. For the first game you do have to do specific things and was linear, but at least you can be creative and try random things that you wouldn't think would work. For this one it is "open" (you can go to three different locations while bringing things with you), but I felt like it lost the creative aspect/solutions from the previous game. A lot of the challenges are the same between the three locations, so it was getting repetitive towards the end and was a collect-a-thon towards the end with clean. Also, don't even get me started on the sand castles...

Picked up the whole PS3 God of War collection as well as the 2 on the PS4. Thought it would be a good change of pace after playing some long RPGs. For the most part the trophies are pretty simple but the Challenges of the Gods and Challenges of the Titans were an absolute pain.

 

The Challenges of the Gods (GoW 1) had couple of frustrating challenges but #10 was an absolute pain. You're on a small platform with no magic and have to deal with those irritating Satyrs which at some points can just straight up throw you off the edge, doesn't matter if you're mid combo or not. I think my record for fastest loss is about 2 seconds, jumped on the platform and was immediately thrown off.

 

Challenge of the Titans (GoW 2) was a little easier, there's only 7 instead of 10 and I didn't have too much difficulty. The last challenge did feel a little cheap at times, but at least you have magic.

 

2 God of War games down, 6 to go!
