Popular Post Undead Wolf
#422 - Alice: Madness Returns Platinum For All Other Trophies Platinum For All Other Trophies My first game of Spooktober. Although technically my first *and* second because American McGee's Alice (the original game) is included as downloadable content. It even has its own trophies which is pretty neat, even if you get them all just by beating the game. I'll talk about that first since I played it before Madness Returns. So I was actually pleasantly surprised by American McGee's Alice. Right off the bat you're hit with this awesome opening cutscene that really sets the tone. This game is seriously dark and it did a great job of creeping me out. Even the pause menu puts you on edge. There were some quite shocking things that happen over the course of the story which I won't spoil here. The point is though that even as a game that came out in the year 2000, it still holds up remarkably well, even today. One area where this game didn't age quite as gracefully is in the gameplay department, but I was expecting it to be way worse given what I had read from one of the threads on here. Like yeah, the combat isn't super refined, but it's perfectly serviceable. I feel like the main focus of the gameplay is on the platforming and puzzle solving anyway. And speaking of the platforming, that's something else I saw a lot of complaints about, but I didn't have much issue with it myself. There were a couple of tricky sections, but that's negated by the fact that you can manually save at any time. If you're not confident you can make a jump, you can just save right before and reload if you fail. Same goes for the enemy encounters and boss fights. Hell, you can even save mid-boss fight if you want. I emphasise this, because again, I saw a thread on here where people were talking about how this game was literal hell to get through and how frustrating it was for them, and having played it myself now, that baffles me. ? This game is wonderful and it's going to stick with me much more than the sequel will. But alright, moving onto Madness Returns. This is the sequel that came out in 2011, and it's very different from American McGee's Alice. Gone is the dark and creepy tone of the original. This sequel is more just... odd. Not going to lie, I found that immensely disappointing as that tone of the original is what made me fall in love with it in the first place. That's not to say that this game isn't good in its own way though. At least the gameplay is a step up from the original. There isn't as much weapon variety as the original, but it plays much more like an action game than a platformer that has some combat on the side. As far as the platforming in this game goes, they added some nice features like a triple jump and a glide which was nice. The levels were well designed and quite pretty for the most part. The story wasn't bad, although I wasn't the biggest fan of them retconning some stuff from the original. As far as the trophies list goes, it was pretty simple. There's a lot of collectibles, so a good guide is a must. I missed a few near the beginning because the original guide I was using was pretty bad, but thankfully I found a better one after that and you can collect any you missed via chapter select. There's a few "do X without taking damage" trophies, but they weren't that bad. Some took a few retries, but that was about it. There's a trophy for beating the game on the hardest difficulty, but this can be cheesed by abusing the chapter select, so that's pretty trivial. So yeah, a pretty chill list overall. If this wasn't clear, I really did enjoy Madness Returns. It's a very good game. It's just that I loved American McGee's Alice which makes the sequel a little disappointing in comparison. Still, I hope we get an Alice 3 someday. I know American McGee has talked about wanting to do it, but I guess the final decision is in EA's hands, so I don't have much hope it'll ever come to fruition unfortunately. ?

Popular Post reaperveteran86
Platinum #297 Chess Knights: Shinobi Folktaled Shinobi - 70,08% Like Viking Lands, this isn`t a chess game but more of a turn based strategy/stealth puzzle game. I liked this one more, because they fixed the controls and the presentation is better in my opinion. Platinum #298 Bound by Flame (PS4) Platinum Trophy - 4,38% I was in the mood for a mediocre action RPG and had this game in my backlog with only a few trophies earned so I thought to myself "why not?". The protagonist Vulcan gets possessed by a fire demon and is the last hope in the fight against the invading undead hordes and their masters the ice lords. You can choose between different weapons/fire spells (daggers are op). There are the obligatory decisions to make, that determined the ending and which of your conpanions likes you or not. My biggest negative points are, that the hitboxes doesn`t seem right. I had it more than a few times, that I was taking damage although the enemy clearly missed me, that you dont have invulnerability after getting hit and the mess, that is the final boss on the hardest difficulty (when you only can defeat a enemy with a method that feels like it wasn`t intended by the developers, than this is bad game design). Platinum #299 (and my 15 000th. Trophy) Kill la Kill: IF Don`t Lose Your Way - 11,85% Arena fighter from Arc System Works. The story mode tells an alternate story to the anime. There are 12 characters that all plays slightly different. The presentation and music are really good and the game is fun. My only negative points are, that the camera and lock on function seems to work against you in one of the game modes (battle against a large group of jobber enemies) which can lead to frustration and that the storymode is extremly short (2 - 3 hours).
Popular Post Vrisnem
Nexomon: Extinction The Age of Extinction There is no gamer amongst my friends, online or offline, that has been able to escape me raving about this game. Nexomon: Extinction takes the Pokémon formula and strips it back to what it was in the original Gameboy era, fixes the grievances people have with the Pokémon games, and delivers a storyline that adults can play without spending the entire time cringing through monologues on the power of friendship. On the topic of friendship... Downside, the trophy list was impacted by the release of the Abyssals DLC - notably Haven't You Had Enough?! and Catch every Nexomon! I put my advice for avoiding missing the first trophy here, but the other has become unavoidably more time-consuming. Originally, this trophy required you to catch all 382 Nexomon in the main game. However, the DLC moved the location of #382 Ziegler to the new Precursor Mountain area - and he can now no longer be caught until after you complete the Abyssals storyline. Even once you complete the DLC and you do manage to catch him, you still need to catch all 50 new Nexomon they added to the game before the trophy pops. I caught Ziegler last night at 400/427 (93.68%) Nexopedia completion. Luckily the DLC only took me a single session to complete - but admittedly I think I was playing non-stop from 2pm through to 2am yesterday so that may not be accurate for everyone. ? I adored this game. I sank almost 83hrs into it (60hrs of that across September/October alone) and I'm not tired of it yet. I'll definitely return to this for cosmic (shiny) hunting later. For now I want to move onto another game - probably the prequel because I picked it up for £5 in a recent sale. Popular Post Golem25
Platinum #133 - Shadow of the Colossus The Horned Boy - Acquired All Trophies 285,640 Owners - 22,863 Achievers for a percentage of 8.00% (average completion; 21.90%) Enjoyment; 9/10 Difficulty; 6/10 Trophies; 8/10 (great mix of requirements, challenging but fair, decent tiles save for the creepy Plat) Bruh that ending doe; 10/10 Wow. I'll just give my verdict right off the bat; this is a fan-tas-tic game and you absolutely need to play it. No ifs or buts, this is the best Playstation exclusive (and a true exclusive at that, because it's not on PC) I have played since probably the PS3 era. It's just that good, which is incredibly considering it's a four year old remake of a 17 year old PS2 game, originally developed by the in-house and sadly defunct Team Ico studio but updated for the PS4 (and, by extension, the PS5) by Bluepoint. Lead developer Fumito Ueda is known for his 'design by subtraction' philosophy, stripping a game down to just the basic requirements to enhance the core experience at the xpense of needless bells and whistles. Perhaps the polar opposite of the stream of thought that goes into Yakuza / Like a Dragon games, my favourite series, but for Shadow of the Colossus it just works. Splendidly. The story leaves a lot up to interpretation; it opens with a boy carrying a dead girl on horseback, crossing into a deserted land with a temple in its midst. Reaching the centre, he is greeted by a disembodied voice of some sort of deity - the boy is looking to revive his dead lover/friend/sister (what their exact relationship is has never been revealed) and of course this ominous sounding voice, thundering through a hole in the ceiling, knows how to help with absolutely no self-interest involved, no sirree. Sixteen massive beasts - colossi - wander the land and the boy - named Wander - must slay all sixteen to allow for the voice to revive his companion. What could possibly go wrong, right? You are then let into the world, on your way to slay the first colossus. Notably, none of them are hostile or destructive at all to their habitat - up until Wander wanders in, that is. One could question whether mindlessly killing the lot of them is the right thing to do, but hey, dead girl and all - get on with it already. With your horse Agro, you ride across this silent land split into a few distinct biomes, seeking out your targets as you meet absolutely no one ever but the odd animal. No minigames, subquests, or other such diversions here; you can pick fruit to increase your health and kill lizards to increase your stamina, but other than that, there is nothing to do but find and destroy colossi. These colossi, by the by, are absolutely massive. Even the smallest two dwarf the player character, resembling oversized bulls, while the largest - which I mustn't spoil - is over 500 feet long (converting to roughly 170 metres). So, considering you only have a sword, a puny bow, and a horse, how do you kill them? Well, you figure out the best way to climb them, hang on for dear life as they try to defend themselves, and stab at their vital signs until they die an unnecessary and avoidable death at your hands, you monster. And don't think all of them are stereotypical giants; some are quadrupeds, others snake-like, some swim, others fly. It's like slaughtering your way through a zoo, there's always something new and exotic around the corner. Each of the sixteen are essentially a combat puzzle (did someone say 'puzzle boss'?); meet them, avoid their attacks, determine how you can get them to their knees or remove their armour, and then find a way to their weak spots. Each is a truly wonderful experience - although some frustrate more than others do - but can feel a little repetitive on subsequent playthroughs as the route and strategy you take does not change beyond some colossi having an extra vital point to destroy on Hard mode. These core essentials - each beautifully thought out - will occupy you for about 30 to 40 hours depending on how quickly you acclimatize to the world and its rules and mechanics. Hours that I thoroughly enjoyed spending in this expansive, solemn natural world crafted by Ueda and his team. For the Platinum, you'll need at least three playthroughs; once on Hard - although you must match this with no-death-run and speedrun Trophies - then once in a slimmed down format on Normal via the Time Attack mode (which strips out the travel time between colossi) and finally once to do the Time Attack on Hard. Hard Time Attack is where the difficulty of 6/10 lies as some of the target times are unforgiving at best. Normal mode, meanwhile, is a 3/10 at best. There are a handful of miscellanous Trophies but nothing that qualifies as more than a footnote. Despite having to beat each colossi multiple times as a result, the game really respects your time; all killer and barely any filler with just one collectible Trophy (visit all savepoints, with most being knocked out on a regular playthrough anyway) and one tiny grind being needed to max your stats, which a good strategy can take care of in anywhere between 2 to 4 hours depending on how many playthroughs you did. The closest I got to feeling like I was wasting my time was having to fight Colossus 14 which forces you into an incredibly dull route that essentially has you repeat the same platforming segment over and over (not to mention that the beast itself is essentially a reskin of Colossus 11 anyway, which provided a much better fight). Ultimately I can say that Shadow of the Colossus is probably the most fun I've had on any Playstation console outside of Yakuza games in many, many years. It's simply that good, that unique, and a game that, after having finally sunk my teeth into it, would consider a must-play for anyone that has access to it. And you will, provided you are an active PS Plus Extra subscriber, or an Essential subscriber who added it to their library when it was a monthly game in March 2020. And if neither apply, it's 20 USD / 30 GBP (has Sterling really devalued that much?) on the PS Store before discounts AND will likely be even cheaper as a physical copy at your local used games store. Seriously, go play this. Now.

Love this game, since it came out for the PS2 and reading your review was a very well conclusion on why everybody needs to play this. Kudos man! Whenever someone tries it out I just hope that the game and especially the ending blows them away. Unfortunately, The Last Guardian is not on the same level, while Ico is good but never had this huge impact as SotC. Btw. does anyone know what Ueda is up to today? ?

Popular Post MidnightDragon
#91 Arcade Game Series: Ms. Pac-Man Since Ms. Pac-Man isn't in Pac-Man Museum + due to legal reasons, decided to play this. It is a fun game. Definitely trickier than OG Pac-Man. Fortunately, there is level select, save states, and you can go up to five lives. None of these void any trophies. This makes getting the trophies much easier. There are some annoying ones, but would be MUCH worse without save states. I got it for $2 on the PS store and feel it was money well spent.

Yeah, I gave it a 5, purely because there are some frustrating parts to it, like enemies that can headshot you, flak jackets galore, other enemies that can kill you very easily with explosions and there are some tricky stealth sections also where enemies have amazing perception hardwired to instant alarms/mission failure. But you can rewind the game and save whenever you want. If you couldn't rewind or save, it might be more like a 6. Maybe on reflection, it might be more like a 4, maybe 4.5 ?
