Project CARS General Discussion (Trophy List Revealed!)

Recommended Posts

With Slightly Mad Studio's sim right around the corner I figured we could use a thread to discuss everything going on with Project CARS. I've played the game on PC and it is absolutely amazing, even in the unfinished state it is in now so I really can't wait to play the completed product on PS4. Even though I'm a WMD member my PC isn't good enough to run the game so I have to go to a buddies house to play the new builds. Luckily SMS have decided (and the community who funded the game) that the PC and console versions should be as close together as possible so there should be very, very few differences between the versions. If anything I expect the PC version (depending on your specs) to be able to handle more cars on track but physics and tire model wise, the consoles are right up there with the PC version.

We have a plethora of PC videos that we can take a look at but since I'd imagine most people here are going to buy the game on PS4, I'd like to show some PS4 footage off.

Taken directly from Gamescom...

The wheel animation still needs some work on the consoles (as you can tell) but everything else is looking gorgeous in my opinion. And the engine sounds are probably the best I've heard in any racing game so this game will certainly be a treat with my Astro A50 headset.

Here is a buggy (no wheel animation) E3 build of the game...

Since this was the first public appearance of the game on console (and sims aren't very mainstream) the developers turned a lot of driving aids on so it looks almost like an arcade racer. Trust me though, it isn't.

Here are the official trailers for the game.

There is also going to be a Limited Edition version of the game...

Man, no Koeingsegg? Oh well, this game is still gonna be fantastic!! Can't wait for release. I think this will be better than DriveClub honestly :)

SMS were on a limited budget compared to something like Gran Turismo or Forza which unfortunately reflects in the car list. Thankfully (for me at least) every car they have included is a great joy to drive and the track list is tremendous so there will be tons of fun to be had there too.

Also, I don't think this can really be compared to DriveClub. Sure, they're both racing games but DriveClub is a point to point arcade racer whereas CARS is a full blown racing simulator. I prefer realistic racing games so of course I'll like CARS more but for someone who prefers a more Need for Speed type of experience I'm sure they'd enjoy DC more. If anything this game should be compared to GT and Forza and as of right now it looks like it will be superior to both.

Thats true, at least we got some sweet new rides to drive! And i meant better as in graphic wise, this looks so much smoother and realistic IMO than DriveClub. Plus, im more of a NFS racer anyway, but i do like my fair share of realistic experiences, this game will only make it better :)

I personally am looking forward to this game.  It has the right amount of cars too.  Who wants to race in a Ford Taurus **looks at Gran Turismo**  I'd love some more tracks for the US/NA side, like Sebring, Road Atlanta or Infineon, but I love the selection real life tracks.  This November will be very busy for me.  My new son will give me hell throughout October lol

Man, fucking EA with their exclusive license for Porsche. RUF just aren't the same. Really excited for this game to see what Slightly mad can really do without the EA shadow cast over them. (Though one perk of that was having Porsche but it's a tough but worthy sacrifice nonetheless IMO)

I actually prefer RUF to Porsche (the Yellowbird is one of the most badass cars ever) but the classic air cooled Porsche's will definitely be missed. EA is (supposedly) the main reason why the Shift series turned out like it did so I'm definitely fine with no Porsche if it means no EA.

Yeah I heard that too, EA for ya

It's just wrong the likes of the 962 and 917 can never be in Racing games. Getting the limited edition for the Sauber C9 alone would be worth it for me, the rest are a bonus! Has there been any announcement about the LE's price?

It is definitely a shame that Porsche doesn't realize that they could get way more money than what EA pays them if they would just license out their cars to the multiple racing game developers that want them.

I don't believe there is a price for the LE as of yet but I don't imagine it will be too much more expensive than the regular version of the game. I'm guessing it will be $79.99.

Ah 80 quid would be a fair price considering you're getting a nice book too. The thing I don't understand with Porsche is that they seemingly refuse to see the potential of video games as a form of advertising, think about it, they're getting paid for someone else to advertise their cars for them just look at the exposure RUF has gotten from Porsches incompetence. I really doubt EA is giving them more money than they'd make from all the other games looking to include them in their games. I'm still waiting for the day we see Porsche in Gran Turismo, but the looks of it, they won't be in 7 either.

Im really excited for this game :D, im more of an arcade racer but sims are always great!

Did SMS say anything about adding cars post release?

Getting the LE for sure! Just hope the AI isn't as horrible as Shift 2, i saw some ps4 gameplay and the dude spun out after a hit from another racer... but maybe he was just a shit racer :P

Nothing specific that I'm aware but they have stated that they will support the game for years to come so I'd imagine that it is extremely likely we'll be getting cars and tracks as DLC sometime in the future.

My major question is will this be mire realistic than rfactor. I have used it on several simulators (F1 and gt 400) and the gap between console and that is massive.

I do have great hopes for this game and missed out on beta which really was a shame. As long as the cars dont feel like shift it'll be a good start

Personally, I think CARS is better in every aspect than rFactor. rFactor has a great tire model no doubt, but CARS has that and much, much more. The only sim on the market now with a physics engine as good as CARS is Assetto Corsa (which may also come to PS4 according to the developer) in my opinion.

Also, this plays nothing like Shift. They may look similar because they are based on the same engine but CARS is genuinely a proper sim, not the arcade game trying to be a sim that was the Shift series.

This video is from a user testing out an Xbox One gamepad on PC.

Looks like the gamepad development is coming along nicely.

  • 2 weeks later...

Cheers Parker, i know you are one to trust on this due to our past discussions on sims. I'll be asking for a quick review on release ;)

Sometime fairly early next year I also plan on purchasing the Thrustmaster T300RS...

T300RS.jpg

As well as the 3 pedal set, the T3PA's...

T3PA-Add-on.jpg

And of course the TH8A shifter add on too.

TH8A-Add-On-Shifter.jpg

Once I have all that set up the game will really come alive. It is a shame the PS4 doesn't support Loigitech wheels and that the Thrustmaster T500RS isn't fully compatible with the PS4.

Eurogamer article on the game;

Slightly Mad Studios is in fighting mood. There's a slight cockiness to creative director Andy Tudor as he runs through the crowd-funded, crowd-developed game, taking an assembled audience at Brands Hatch through everything that will make Project Cars stand out, and how it's out to compete against the big hitters, against Gran Turismo and Forza. There's an admirable, tenacious bite to the demeanour, too - I can't help but think of iconic images of a sprightly Lotus Cortina snapping at the heels of the wallowing Ford Galaxie in 60s saloon racing.

Without the backing of a platform holder, or a big, established brand of its own, Project Cars is going to need all the fight that Slightly Mad Studios can muster. "Obviously we're up against it, but I think we've got that bulldog mentality, and people root for the underdog," Tudor tells us after the presentation about Project Cars' prospects against well-established competition. "I think it's pretty bold to say that we're trying to beat Forza and Gran Turismo - I hope people at least put them in the same category, and see us as an alternative."

The wind is blowing in Project Cars' direction, at the very least. There are plenty of racing games coming out before Christmas - the open-world American epic The Crew, the extremely polished Xbox One exclusive Forza Horizon 2 and Sony's own dazzling DriveClub - but, in the absence of mainline Forza and Gran Turismo entries, Project Cars stands alone in its intentions.

Some PS4 footage shows that Project Cars is handsome on console, but not quite as much as its PC counterpart. The frame-rate seems to waver around the 30fps mark, dipping a little when the rain rolls in.

"If you are looking for something with cars that are realistic, with tracks and with features that you wished had been in Forza and Gran Turismo for many years, with no tire squeal like there is in Gran Turismo, cars that don't go round in a funeral procession like Forza, then Project Cars is the one for you," says Tudor, before resorting to humility for a brief second. "But to even be compared to them is honour enough."

There's more to Project Cars than chutzpah, though, and Slightly Mad aren't exactly plucky young upstarts. The studio's history is long and distinguished, stretching back to its former life as Blimey! Games and the incredible GTR games and going all the way to 2011's Shift 2 Unleashed, a game that was sensational in its treatment of racing. It was sensational to a fault, unfortunately, with a handling model that erred towards the erratic in its quest for drama.

You'll see glimpses of those games in Project Cars, though thankfully it's the best of both series that's shining through right now. The spectacle of Shift is retained in the returning helmet cam, as good an approximation you'll get of the experience of being buffeted about in the cockpit of a car without resorting to the real deal or an Oculus or Morpheus headset (both of which are also being supported). It's glorious looking, even if some of that splendour has been dialled down for the PlayStation 4 version - the sun sets over freshly damped tracks, lighting the little pools of water that can catch you off guard as you lap the laser-scanned circuits.

Project Wii U

The Wii U version of Project Cars still exists, even though it was pushed back to next year. "We obviously delayed until 2015, and there were some passionate people who got in touch with us about that," says Tudor. "There's no conspiracy here - we announced the Wii U very early on in our development cycle, and some people think because we've been working on it a lot longer so it should be out now. The Xbox One version looks wicked, the PC version looks awesome, so does the PS4 version. It's not our goal to rush the Wii U version and have it not look as good as the other ones.

"The Nintendo fans we've got are crying out for a game like this. They don't really have that experience currently, and there hasn't really been anything like it on Wii previously. It's not our job to disappoint those guys. So when we say the Wii U version is delayed in 2015 because we need a little more time, that's all it is. We just want to make sure it's of the same standard of all the other games. To do that, we just need a little more time. I've seen the Wii U version, I've seen it quite regularly. It's got dynamic time of day, weather - it looks phenomenal. And the actual console itself is quite good."

It's the similarities between Project Cars and GTR that are most exciting, especially if, like me, you rate the ageing PC series as the very pinnacle of the racing genre. At a time when we're spoilt for driving games, you may think it odd to bemoan the lack of half decent racing action in the genre, but it's been an age since I've had a certain itch scratched: the one that comes from spending countless Sundays devouring any motor race available online or on TV.

So why do I still go back to 2006's GTR 2 to get an approximation of that which I love dearest? Maybe it's because most driving games haven't cottoned on to the fact that I'm not after a tailored narrative, tied together with an over-enthusiastic voiceover. There's a time and a place for an in-depth levelling RPG levelling system, and out on the tarmac between the green light and checkered flag most certainly isn't it. All I ever want is a field of licensed cars, a series of simulated races and a points table tying it all together. It's a neat piece of design that's endured for decades in the real world of racing, and I can't see it being trumped any time soon.

So what's exciting about Project Cars, more than its widely celebrated visuals or its attention to detail, is its faith in what makes motorsport tick. What makes it stand out is its willingness to sidestep experience or reward systems in favour of just giving you every car from the off, and allowing you to race them as you please in a series of championships. It's simple stuff, but thrillingly so.

"Other games you may have to grind for XP to unlock them, or you may even - god forbid - have to buy them via micro transaction," says Tudor. "You may have to grind for cash in races to buy the car that you want. We've scrapped that. It's a broken model. You start thinking about money, and your account balance as opposed to things that real racing drivers think about which is their career, the points in the championship, how good the car is feeling, improving the car."

There's an option to do a full 24 hour race in Project Cars - and an achievement to go with it.

The feel of the cars has improved, thankfully, after the somewhat wayward efforts in Slightly Mad's last game. "At the end of Shift 2 Unleashed we were looking on all the forums, Reddit, NoGripRacing, GTPlanet, and we were looking at the big concerns," says Tudor. "It was input lag, handling, how the feedback doesn't feel right on the wheel. Day one we were like, what the hell, we've got to fix that. There was a lot of rewriting, we've got a brand new tire model. It's super-important. The tire model is the physics that drive the thing that's most in contact between the car and the track. It's super-important - it drives everything. It drives the handling, the grip levels, the temperatures, when you're swapping tires, how the rain effects things."

In practice, Project Cars strikes a balance somewhere between the exacting simulation of rFactor and more accessible console fare - the closest match, in fact, would be Forza itself. There's a lightness of touch to the cars, an ability to hurl them round with some abandon without serious consequences while a sense of simulation is maintained. The diversity of Project Cars garage makes for diverse handling experiences, though the quality isn't necessarily consistent right now - a Formula Ford inspired single seater feels deliciously light as it dances in the rain of the Hockenheimring, while a Z4 GT around Oulton Park displays some of the skittishness that blighted Shift 2 Unleashed.

Work is still to be done in the coming months, and there's no doubting Project Cars' authenticity. The brilliantly named, exceptionally talented German GT driver Rene Rast has been using the game as an aid before big endurance races this year, preparing for Le Mans and Nurburgring by taking to his own rig. Even more impressively, it's something he did without provocation from Slightly Mad Studios - Rast, as an enthusiast of driving games, picked up an early build of Project Cars of his own accord.

It tells of the enthusiasm that's swelled around Project Cars since its release, the waves of excitement that have met each exquisite looking, fan-made trailer. The crowd development model has helped Project Cars establish a community before it's even launched, and some of that enthusiasm has now started to bleed out elsewhere. Can it genuinely square up against the likes of Gran Turismo and Forza? With its features, its momentum and its appetite and understanding of what makes motorsport tick, there's every reason to believe it could be the game that reminds the old guard what makes racing so special.

Also an article confirming 1080P and 60FPS on PS4.

It is a known fact that Slightly Mad Studios is targeting 1080p and 60 Frames per Second for their drastically-close-to-reality racing videogame, Project CARS both on Xbox One and Playstation 4. However, whether or not the studio got any luck with their projected resolution/FPS has not been divulged until now.

While replying to fans on Eurogamer Comments Section, head of the developing studio, Ian Bell mentioned ‘both consoles’ when he talked about 1080p/60FPS. However, he seemed a little more confident about the Playstation 4 version by stating that the game is already very close to running at 1080p/60FPS on PS4.

We’re already there on PS4, so high.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that no details regarding the Xbox One version has been provided. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Xbox One version turns out to be running at 900p or less; given its previous records.

Though I hope, Xbox One version of the game will enjoy similar fate. When talking about the PS4 version, Bell also stated that it will support all PS4 steering wheels whether be it on day one or after a patch.

We will support all PS4 wheels, Walch. Be it on release day or patch when the wheel ships.

Project CARS is slated to launch in November, 2014 on Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U, and Steam OS.
