PSN SERVERS DOWN? 12/25/14

PS4 servers are still not working properly. I think different regions have different answers as to if they are on psn for their PS4 system. Couple of non USA players are able to access psn.

For the time being, all we can do is enjoy psn on our ps3 and vita systems.  If you guys have the Playstation App you can use that to see which of your friends are online and so forth. The app is the only thing that can access you online to psn for the PS4.

This was almost definitely caused by DDoS attacks. Xbox Live was hit badly too and they are normally more reliable than Sony's. The problems actually started late on Christmas Eve before people even got there new consoles. Apparently the attacks have stopped but Sony took there servers offline to do maintenence and hopefully try to improve the security a bit.

This happens every year at Christmas. Servers are just overloaded, the best thing to do, is to just relax, and play offline until at least tomorrow. Continually trying to sign in is just making things worse.

Seeing common sense around the threads is truly refreshing. Thank you!

This is the problem.

People tend to think that it's completely Sony's fault but... protecting against DDoS is not something that can be done easily by adding some new layers of protection... (which is also a reason why it's always DDoS type of attack in these cases and attacks like #GOP made are more rare).

Sony can only add new servers to lessen the impact but that's obviously pricey way.

Since day 24 that I can´t enter in my acount on PSN I don´t try it today but I hope that tomorrow it´s has been fixed in my region (I´m from Portugal) !!!

What have I seen in the Internet that cause this was the "Lizard Squad" but I don´t if it´s true or not I did a litle "research" and found this:

I'm not a specialist, but as far as I know it's bassicaly using many, many computers at once to send an 'atack' on servers of Sony (in this particular case). The servers are not able to defend themselfs and they crash

And all this just strengthens my theorhy => You DO NOT negociate with 'terrorists'. I'm using quotes here, becouse those are possibly just some dumb, fat kids. You find them, and make the f*ckers pay. That's it! Otherwise they'll come back and demand more. And that is something we do not want, do we?  No more political correctness*, no more being a nice guy. Find them, make them pay, end of story

* I'm a European, and all that 'political correctness' of US always makes me wonder. If you don't like something - say it! There's no reason to keep it inside you. But I'm not here to fight, just pointing that out :)

I'm paying for a service that is down 45% of the times, smh.....this is a joke, first couple of times it was alright, but now we definitely need some kind of compensation, or this to stop completely, these so called "hackers" need to find something better to do with their time.

Lol. 45%?? Right. Or is that the joke.

Almost right!  Basically it's having thousands and thousands of simultaneous log-ins from fake accounts, so many simultaneously that the servers can't keep up and crash.  It doesn't matter if the accounts are real or not, because the server is still trying to recognize the user id and password and respond with an error message.

That's why it's hard to tell the difference between a true DDoS attack and just server overload on a busy day (like Christmas or launch day of a new MMO).  That's also why it's hard to guard against, and why "hackers" with minimal skills can pull these attacks off.  You just need a way to simultaneously attempt thousands of log-ins, and you don't even need real accounts to do it.

Does sony even try to up their security, seems like things like this happen quite often over the past few years.

And why is it ps4 doesnt work but ps3 and vita work for some people ? Aren't these the same servers?

Unfortunately you'll always have the problem that a server can only handle so much traffic, and the "hackers" will just find a way to add more traffic than you can handle.  PS4, PS3, and Vita are definitely on different servers to manage their independent populations, and in fact, even within each system there are multiple servers.  That's why some people are getting on and others are not.
