Updated to include MouseCraft - decided to download it while I was waiting for Okami HD to download. Fun, relaxing little game, very similar to the Lemmings (although the difficulty isn't nearly as brutal). It was definitely a nice switch from Sacred 2 (I so need a refresher after that nightmare) - I highly recommend playing it if you haven't already.

Updated to include Okami HD - going to try something different and go into more detail with my opinion these posts.

1S0beebf.png(Top Dog)

Okami has a very slow start, so it took me a bit to get into the story, but it's absolutely worth getting over that initial bump. You play as Yukiko's persona, Amaterasu, a wolf goddess that's tasked with saving the land of Nippon. I don't want to spoil too much for those that haven't played, but if you're looking for a good story that features characters from Japanese mythology, this is your game.

Things I liked:

  • The sense of progression - plenty of games have difficulty with this concept. You're either bullied around all game until you find the best things (if they exist), or you just steamroll from the very start. As you'd expect, newer monsters tend to have weaknesses to your new powers, however, that's not always the case - your old abilities are still useful for some of them. Once you get an ability, you won't stop using it, so they don't feel like a gimmick for the dungeon they're introduced. Also, I really enjoyed all of the difficult side bosses and trials.
  • The characters - they all had interesting personalities that made sense. You're mute, but you have a wandering artist with a humorous personality accompanying you, so there's a lot of interesting dialogue between characters. Also, Sakuya is a total slut in a game full of nearly naked people, so there's your fan service.
  • The puzzles - sure, some are really aggravating, such as falling from one mistake all the way down the tower, but some of them required quite a bit of thought and pushed on my non-existent platforming skills. Again, your powers aren't going unused at all.
  • The variety of useful weapons - you're allowed to use Reflectors, Rosaries, or Glaives, each with their own pros and cons. I used each of them extensively, and not a one felt much weaker than the other. You're also allowed to switch between them at will, which was nice to adapt to the flow of battles.

Things I disliked:

  • The slow text speed - I really dislike having to wait for the speech to enter one syllable at a time. I read fairly quickly, so not having an option to bypass this was kind of annoying.
  • The "minigames" - digging was kind of a pain, although that could probably be attributed to the fact that I didn't start putting points into ink until cleansing the big city, nor did I bother using infinite ink.
  • Fishing for the Marlin for the side quest - the developers were cruel in making that quest. Some expletives were used while completing it. Aside from that, the rarity of some fish were silly. I caught ~45 Red Snappers before finally getting a Lobster.

Overall, it's a really great (and mostly relaxing) game. Definitely glad I picked it up during the sale.

Updated to included Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes (aka SB3).

1S7c1f1d.png(Samurai Hero)

About the game:

This is the 3rd installment of the SB series, which is Capcom's version of Samurai Warriors, and is the 2nd game to appear outside of Japan (including the awful Devil Kings game). The story takes place shortly after Toyotomi's death and doesn't quite make it to Tokugawa's reunification of Japan due to mystical shit happening because of Tenkai. Also, Honda is a gundam.

Things I liked:

  • The character diversity. Each character plays noticeably different from each other, which is really nice because in most Musou games, they all tend to fall into the "smash square to victory" category. Almost every character also had a decent amount of chains and fun techniques to play around with.
  • The plot - it doesn't take itself too seriously (which is a nice contrast to Koei Tecmo's games). The characters aren't complex in the slightest, but they do have interesting interactions.
  • Tokugawa Ieyasu's body

Things I disliked:

  • Goes with my first bullet point - character usefulness. With each character being unique, there's bound to be some character that has an absolutely crappy arsenal, which is excusable. However, this game has multiple characters that I consider a pain to play (mainly due to being incapable of running or having painfully slow/weak attacks, usually a combination of the three).
  • Some of the stages are mind-blowingly awful. For example, there's a stage where you do nothing but chase Date and Katakura around for ~5 minutes on horseback (this game doesn't utilize horses really on any other stage - which isn't bad because the horse combat is crap). There's several stages that felt like a waste of time to play to me.
  • The game's grind feels really unrewarding. You're required to play through story mode 65+ times (64 for required accessories, 1 extra for one of Ieyasu's allies [not completely, but you're at the penultimate stage, so I'm counting it]), and then you get to grind outside of story mode for another 140 hours with no sense of progression until you're near the end.
  • Hard mode isn't hard. I'd rename it Tedious mode; as you'd expect, everything has higher stats which is fine, but then you reach the boss and then the fun begins. Bosses have "super armor", so you're going to be slapping them for a good while, and they have a tendency to keep their block up as much as possible. The fights tend to go back and forth between you and them blocking until you get hit and then slap them with your Basara Art, or you get a few lucky hits in and can start comboing them.
  • This goes along slightly with the previous points - your stats don't really seem to make a difference. You're going to lose a lot of health when an enemy looks at you on Hard mode despite pumping your defense up. Increasing your attack didn't seem to cause you to deal more damage either. I've read some things about certain builds, but most of those are only achievable with additional grinding or if you're near the platinum anyways.

Do I recommend the game? Eh, not really - Koei Tecmo's games feel more rewarding to play. I do like a good amount of the characters (design and personality wise), so maybe if I'm bored, I'll consider importing Sumeragi.

Updated to include Disgaea 5.

1Se03d95.png (Vengence Complete)

As an avid fan of NIS and Disgaea, I waited until this game's release to finally order a PS4, and with this game alone, I feel I've gotten my money's worth. If you haven't played it yet, you're definitely doing yourself a disservice. I'll keep spoilers out of my opinions, but I'll list them in a spoiler afterwards for those curious.

Things I liked:

  • The story and characters: It was very well written, and there were unexpected feels being thrown at me. NIS and NISA have outdone themselves this time; I definitely applaud both the writers and translators for making this.
  • In addition to the story, D5 introduced character skits (if you've played a Tales game, you're familiar with this concept), and it added much appreciated character development and depth.
  • The gameplay - it's pretty much the same as the other Disgaeas with a lot of nicely done improvements. I loved the fact that Chara world is now a board game, and leveling items feels more rewarding since it requires a bit more effort (and is slightly slower, but I'd claim it's worth it).
  • Monsters are even closer to being on par with humanoids thanks to even more buffs. Also, the new classes are pretty fun.
  • Asagi's personality. I've always liked her sprite, and having a not whiny personality really suits her.

Things I disliked:

  • Honestly, I can't find a single thing wrong with the game outside of DLC. The amount of effort NISA put into them is really disappointing; there's several characters that don't have lines, but instead, they grunt and whatnot. Couldn't get the old voice actors hasn't stopped them before, and there's no way Adell could get any worse than he was in D2. Also, I want Marona~kins.
  • Additionally, the scenarios had slight voice acting. And by slight, I mean they use their battle sounds, so for the characters that don't have lines, there was a lot of grunting. Honestly, if there's going to be noises, they should be actual lines, but I'd be fine with the silence, as in previous games.
  • Too many fist users. NIS please.

Another thing I disliked was that Liezerota isn't playable. It took me awhile to get over Xenolith in D2 since he was an okay character, however, I love Lieze's personality, and I'm peeved that she's not playable. I had more, but I forgot... Oops.

I've also finally started on Mugen Souls since I have to share the PS4 (one of the downsides of dating a fellow NIS addict), so look forward to that platinum in a couple months.

Updated to include Citizens of Earth (PS4).

S231f6e.png

CoE was advertised as a spiritual successor to the Mother series, however, since it was made by Atlus and not Itoi, it got slammed by reviews. Being filled with bugs and crashes at release didn't help either. I didn't run into any aside from getting caught on walls a few times, but the game autosaves each area, so it wasn't really annoying.

Things I liked:

  • The characters: You're given the option of 40 completely unique characters to choose from, and each one is completely viable, so you're allowed to choose your party at will (although keeping them slightly balanced may make things easier for you). I ended up using Lifeguard/Brother/Bartender for my party, although if I knew more about the characters in advance, I'd probably swap Brother out for Sushi Chef.
  • The plot: In contrast to the Mother series, the plot's not serious in the slightest, which goes nicely with all of the puns and pop culture references that are everywhere. I'd probably say the plot was about average overall.
  • The minigames: A few of the characters require you to beat a mini-game before recruiting them. None of them seemed difficult, and I enjoyed completing them all.

Things I disliked:

  • Yoga Instructor: She requires you to train all your recruits to at least level 20, and I didn't discover her existence until after I collected 25+ characters, so I had extra grinding to do which was kind of annoying. I should've done more research into recruitment beforehand..
  • Weather Lady: She requires you to be walking about during a thunderstorm, which didn't happen at all during the main story for me. In fact, I had to go to an area with the highest probability for one to spawn and leave my controller for about an hour before it happened. If you're not lucky like I was, this could be the only reason why you'll spend a long time completing this trophy list.
  • The music. It wasn't bad, but the tracks were completely too short (about 20 seconds at most), so you had a lot of looping going on.

Overall, it's a pretty good game, so if you're considering it, I'd recommend picking it up, especially when it's on sale.

Side complaint: For some reason the trophy for using the Teacher's maxed ability popped for the bf's account instead of mine without me noticing, so I had to speed run a second playthrough to complete it which took an extra 11 hours, bleh.

Updated to include Omega Quintet for the big 30.

1S9c4b5d.png (Platinum Trophy)

Omega Quintet is an RPG created by the makers of the HDN, so you should kind of know what to expect going into it. The story's not bad, and the battle system is somewhat complex (you'll get a lot of tutorials thrown at you for the first few chapters, so it's easy to be overwhelmed), but once you get the hang of things, you'll be fine.

Things I liked:

  • The characters/story. While it's not spectacular in any way, I enjoyed the story. If you're a fan of the plot for HDN, you'll probably like this game's plot as well. As for the characters, Godou >> Momoka >> Kanadeko = Aria > Ayumi = Takt > everyone else >>> Nene.
  • The music. While most of the games I play have great soundtracks that I neglect to mention, this one really stood out to me with its vibrant tracks.
  • Godou. I wouldn't mind his clothes falling apart. Shame he isn't playable.

Things I disliked:

  • ORDER BREAK <cue woodwinds> ORDER BREAK ORDER BREAK ORDER BREAK
    • Scenario 1: Game Over -> Reset
    • Scenario 2: 4/5 girls are dead with the 5th having every status effect in the book -> Reset
    • Repeat as many times as desired or until tear ducts are empty. But seriously, this mechanic is really annoying when you're trying to level up or fight bosses and they order break you constantly for half an hour (yes, even if you get a surprise attack, you can still get slapped with an Order Break). If fights didn't start with order breaks all the time, this game would be so much more enjoyable, as you shouldn't get a game over for fighting an enemy a fourth of your level just because only 2 monsters spawned.
  • Conversations involving Takt + girl. It's kind of weird that everyone assumes Takt is trying to sleep around with every girl he sees despite clearly being uninterested in all of them. Hell, you're even forced to force Takt to pair up with someone for an ending despite going against his entire personality.
  • 10,000 kill trophy. I had over 1B support at ~3600 kills. This was completely unnecessary.
  • Crafting system. It's like a recession hit this place. While it kind of fits thematically, it's not fun not being able to afford anything ever (I actually caved and spend 99 cents on the 500M arcanium, so I could finally buy the 1250 Vit amps for everyone, so I could be fast enough to complete the Training tower). Also, having to disassemble items to use them for crafting could've been a removed step.

Despite my many complaints, it was a really fun game, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone considering it. Is it worth the full price? I wouldn't say so, but if it was on sale for 80% off once, it'll probably happen again. Just be careful of the trophies.

Updated to include Sonic Adventure.

Sc9a0ca.png

This is the only Sonic game that I've actually played, aside from the beloved Sonic R. There was quite a bit of rage on my end while playing this thanks to me being really bad and running into every glitch you could imagine.

Things I liked:

  • The music. This is something I've noticed from the boyfriend playing the other games; Sonic's games usually have great, catchy songs, and this one's no exception. It doesn't hold a candle to my Sonic R though.
  • The difficulty. I had to "git gud" for some of those A levels; there's a reason why all of my Sonic-fanatic friends haven't completed them.
  • The Chao garden. They're so cute~

Things I didn't like:

  • Glitches. I've fallen through pretty much every floor, wall, and ceiling in the game. You name it; I've glitched through it and lost a life. If there's one thing I've noticed, Sonic's games are riddled with glitches; it's probably why he's not as popular as Mario.
  • The characters. Honestly, they're all annoying in their own unique way. Sonic's a complete douche (cool and blue as me). Tails is a failure (saved the city, yet every building is falling apart, and water is pouring out of them). Amy is an annoying stalker. Knuckles is stupid. Big is Big. Tikal is useless despite being able to contain Chaos, yet doesn't help.
  • Casinopolis A-level sucks.
  • Missions, especially #54. You'd expect #53 to be here, but I actually got it quickly while I was harassing the boyfriend, so I couldn't even tell you how I did it. #54 took me several hours because lolsnowboarding in a constrained area with a time limit.

I still prefer Sonic R over Sonic Adventure, but from what I know, this is one of the best games in his series, so just for that, I'd recommend it to anyone that want to get into his series. I'll probably play Sonic Adventure 2 eventually, but it's not high on my to-do list.

Updated to include The Witch and the Hundred Knight.

1Saca661.png #31: (Grand Finale)

This game was pretty interesting to play through. It follows the Swamp Witch Metallia and her adventures through Medea. The story pacing is extremely slow at the beginning, but once it picked up, I was hooked. The game got a lot of flak for having several bugs, primarily exiting out completely at random times to the XMB, and "melting PS3s?", but I only ran into the bug once during my play though and my PS3's not melted. The gameplay was fairly fun as well.

Things I liked:

  • The plot. I was interested in playing this game to get Metallia's back story after using her in Disgaea D2 and 5, and after playing it, I have much more respect for her as a character, and now I wish they brought Malia, Hundred Knight, Arlecchino, and Viscole into the Disgaea series with her. Anyways, the story's really interesting and I won't go into any spoilers, but I highly recommend playing for the story.
  • The gameplay. Running around and fighting things was pretty fun, and being skilled with dodging is actually rewarding with Mystic Dodges giving you ~5 seconds of invulnerability and can skew battles into your favor easily.
  • The music. It was reminiscent of the earlier Disgaea games' and Phantom Brave's sound tracks. Somehow I got the bonus disc containing all the OST despite buying it used at GameStop a few months ago, but I'm not complaining.

Things I didn't like:

  • The story's pacing. For me, the first several chapters dragged on and felt like they were going nowhere. I was definitely relieved when it finally picked up; I was worried that I finally found a NIS game that I disliked.
  • The map sizes. This kind of goes along with the previous point; the map sizes started off decent, but then they kept growing and growing. Paired up with a story going nowhere, this was a recipe for disaster. The map sizes eventually calmed down and became more manageable once you reach the Bad ending route though.

Honestly, this was an amazing game, and I recommend in to anyone that's a fan of NIS, especially if they've used Metallia at all. If you're not a fan, I still recommend it although your mileage may vary.

Updated to include Sword Art Online: Lost Song

1S84e4ca.png#32: ALO's Strongest Player

This was the second game in the popular SAO series. It follows Kirito and his harem friends with their journey in a small area in ALO.

Things I liked:

  • Gameplay/combat. It was pretty fun playing as everyone with their different weapons and spells. I ended up using Klein + Kirito/Agil during the story; I switched them out for Sumeragi/Kuroyukihime once I got them. While the character creation was an embarrassment, the amount of character options will definitely keep me busy for a long time. Although honestly, it'll probably end up being Klein + 2 support characters
  • Multiplayer. While I haven't tried it yet, being able to play and kill bosses with friends is something I'm looking forward to. Just have to wait until they get around to finishing the first island ._. We'll be able to take on Multiplayer-Kuroyukihime eventually.
  • Side stories involving the harem. It was nice to see the parallels to the anime through them.

Things I didn't like:

  • No costumes for the males that aren't Kirito. I WANT KLEIN IN A BATHTOWEL.
  • Bad commands. I glanced over these, but I didn't like that I couldn't tell my allies how to behave with precision.

Despite being a very short game, I had a lot of fun with it, and since there's even stronger bosses in multiplayer, I'm definitely going to continue playing this.

--

Trophy-wise, this will most likely be my penultimate platinum this year; I'll end up getting Armello later this month (once I harass the boyfriend enough to boost it for me, haha). As for the remaining time, I'll be busy with the holidays, but if I get some time, I plan on working on Mugen Souls and Cross Edge (most likely the latter) with some Malicious thrown in to finish up my listed non-platinum games.

Updated to include Armello.

1S42d6d0.png#33: ...Happily Ever After

Armello is a Board game created by the League of Geeks, and it was one of the three options for the poll for PS+. Sadly, this game didn't win, and many people missed out on it. As for the gameplay, I'd say it's somewhat similar to Settlers of Catan, so there's much fun to be had if you have a good group.

Things I liked:

  • Variety. Every character has their own distinct play style, all of which are enjoyable to pursue. The game always feels fresh thanks to the pre-game equips, multitude of cards, and the inherent randomness of board games.
  • Actions during others turns. This is my biggest gripe during most board games; my friends (boyfriend included) take forever during their turns, so it's nice to be able to plot my own mischief and see it through during their turns.

Things I disliked:

  • Nothing. This game is a masterpiece in my eyes, and I commend the folks at LoG for creating it. Expansions/DLC would be fun, but I'm definitely going to spend several hundred hours on this anyways; it's just that good.

I definitely recommend this game to everyone, especially those that have friends/family that they could play it with.
