Yep, had to save her first.

 

This game is a little sadistic making you fight 2 bosses in a row, the first one was a real pain too, every attack causes some type of status effect (which is both annoying & cheap). Luckily the second one was a little more manageable since you can contentiously run from her (restoring your HP/SP), as long as you watch where you step.
