My time in slightly plastic-looking Vice City continues, and in quite a strange way; I'm not quite sure how I decided on this, but I am now playing the PS4 and PS5 stacks in sync with one another. That is to say, I do mission or activity X on PS4, I switch to the PS5 version and do the same there, resulting in the curious situation wherein my Trophy log now looks like its glitching out with Trophies showing up twice with different rarities. I know this sounds bizarre, but I'm actually enjoying things this way; doing things imperfectly on PS4, and then more or less speedrunning them on PS5 because I had done whatever it is I'm doing on there successfully five minutes earlier on PS4.

 

No, I'm not switching after every mission or kill, but rather at points where it makes sense; for instance, I got 99 out of 100 Hidden Packages on PS4 this morning, which took a few hours, and only once I got to 99 did I switch to PS5 to redo them. Same for whole strings of missions up until the ones with associated Trophies; those I do switch for nearly instantly to unlock the Trophies close together. Yes, I must be sounding stark raving mad right about now. But it's my profile, so I'll do what I want, dammit!

 

 

So, I did mention that I played the Trophy-enabled PS2 Classics version of Vice City earlier in the year, and while the Trophy list for that port is largely the same as the lists for the Definitive Edition stacks, there are a few alterations and additions. For the latter, notably a few Trophies now require you to fulfill special requirements in story missions to get your ding, and one of them - a Gold no less - is in 'Demolition Man', one of Avery Carrington's quartet of missions early on in the game. Supposedly this is one of the toughest to be tackled in Vice City, but both the mission and the Trophy I got on my first try on both Definitive stacks.

 

Take an unwieldy radio-controlled helicopter, pick up four explosives one after another, and plant them in a construction site while the local workers try to destroy your chopper. Get all four explosives dropped within the time limit, and you complete the mission. For the Trophy, supposedly you have to kill all the workers by hitting them with your blades (Kill all hostile NPCs during the mission "Demolition Man" using the RC chopper’s blades.), but.... uh.... that doesn't seem to be necessary. See the above screenshot, and look at the pillar on the right; you can just about make out a living NPC still taking potshots at my helicopter.

 

So, like most other parts of the Definitive Edition, this isn't quite as perfect as you'd expect a modern remaster of such a renowed, well-loved game to be. Disappointing all around, but I'll take a beneficially glitched Trophy over one that glitches to my detriment. And this happened on both versions; the Gold popped with one NPC left alive, and that's just too much of a coincidence. Remaster nitwits Grove Street games must have miscounted the number of NPCs in the mission for the unlock criteria.

 

Despite their best efforts to f*** the remaster up, underneath the poor polish is still the original Vice City, and that's just an excellent game, so do try one of the stacks before it leaves Playstation Plus Extra in February '23!

So far I'm enjoying Replicant a lot, this version of the game feels more fluid in the gameplay, like the combat and animations, one of the few things I didn't like about the original was its stiffness in those aspects. This time fishing is being quite fun!

Mr. Tomassi is the toughest main game boss, even more so than esseJ. I would wait until you have completed the main game and gone into free roam. Get some good mods and your favorite weapons ready. Tomassi can dodge Launched objects but will eat the hit sometimes. Beware of the Hiss Distorted that appears after you've taken a good chunk of his life bar. I think you deserve a gold for beating him.

The Anchor was a pushover. It's like a Pac-Man from hell. Whenever it opens its mouth towards you, it is getting ready to attack by spitting clocks at you. Use Launch and "feed" it a thrown object to cancel this and do decent damage. Get your Launch ability to a decent level before fighting this boss.

 

Now all I've got left before the plat is Master Parautilitarian, where you need to have 100 Ability points spent.

This is an awesome remake, I liked a lot of the changes and by far the ship part was incredible, so far with my first run I'm amazed by it. I don't know how much this differs from the Replicant version released in Japan for the ps3 but version 1.22474487139 is pretty good, wish I could play the ps3 version but due to the big issue that is me not speaking Japanese I can't haha.
