Post Your NYMHC Failures

Was going through the game comfortably until it froze on chapter 13 right before the LMG guy spawns... fucking garbage. If this didnt happen I would of been done 100% and mind you it's my first ever attempt. Not trying to be that guy but so far I think this game is overated difficulty wise, definitely no 9/10 even 8/10 seems generous.

I might as well start my own diary of NYMHC attempts...

Attempt #1: Chapter 8. After the fight with the dude with the grenade launcher, I decided to pick it up and take it with me to the next area. Here you must distract the enemies from Passos, otherwise he dies (where the dudes are gathered near the vans). Normally I shoot dodge this particular section, but this time I used a grenade launcher to get the explosive bonus which netted a lot of time towards my timer. But for some reason, I get a cutscene where one of the enemies kills Passos.

Somebody else had this happen to him as well:

7th Attempt: During Chapter 8, in the area where you’re supposed to distract the enemies from Passos, I decided to use the grenade launcher just for the hell of it. It later ended up showing a short cutscene in which one of the enemies killed Passos. I was literally left speechless.

Can someone please explain what the fuck happened here?

Attempt #2: Chapter 7. Did the warehouse section with ease. Everything was going good until the very end, just before the RPG guy shows up. Apparently, the enemies here are scripted to throw molotovs, so I foolishly rolled -JUST BEFORE- the molotov hit me, resulting in an instant death. No painkillers will save you from grenades or molotovs. Speaking of which...

Attempt #3: Chapter 6, Part 1. The big server room where you must escort the IT guy after you've killed everyone. There is a reason why the game gives you four painkillers, this section is a pain in the ass. Anyway, there are two waves of enemies. I dealt with the first wave, making sure to pick up the painkillers in case the second wave got hairy. Turns out the second wave got hairy. I camped in the little area where the IT guy gets the servers back online. One of the goons throws a grenade in my direction, I try to get away from it but it killed me instantly. Had no fucking clue where the grenade was located exactly.

-----

I'm on my fourth attempt right now, and should this fail then I will try NYMHC again tomorrow night. With my general lack of skill in TPS games, and shaky nerves (it took me over 40 hours to earn the Impossible Boy trophy in Super Meat Boy), I predict I will make a dozen or so attempts before I am successful.

on NYM I definitely had the hardest time with chapter 13

it was the only chapter I felt I had to memorize and speed thru perfectly JUST to be able to finish within the time limit

the first set is easy since the actual thrower should only get one out before he's shootable, and i dont remember the there ever being more then two molotovs on the second platform of them with very specific hit locations that are pretty easy to avoid if you just dont move up, maybe its cause of me just dumping the 4 guys infront of you when you climb the stairs immediately in bullettime then taking cover and killing the rest, but idk, i never had an issue there

oh yeah that second cubicle fight is a mess, i never found a completely foolproof method to it outside of kind of slowing going around counterclockwise till everyone's dead, though i have seen them fuck up the grenade toss there multiple times for no reason, so at least there's that

@AJ_Radio - There's definitely a difficulty spike towards the end, though I think Chapters 6 and 14 are probably the most difficult. The fourth shootout in office (Ch6) is very random and Ch14 puts you straight away in an unfair position, plus luck of the draw whether the final boss decides to cheat. For grenades if you see an indicator on screen but aren't sure where it is, shootdodge. You're invincible during the animation and it could save you from insta-death.

@HondaHoe - Ch13 was the police station right? That was surprisingly straightforward. The only danger is messing up the tank session and game freezing. For anyone else dreading it - Shoot the tank with the rocket launcher, run back to the entrance and pick off enemies as they come out from the parking lot, take the grenade launcher to the left side of the area and use it to blind fire the armoured enemies coming out the two elevators. For the section with the RPD guy it's important to immediately take out the three enemies to the middle and left of the room, then camp to the right and pick the enemies off. For the final section you can basically shoot everyone from the starting balcony, then when the boss is trigged run underneath him and backup slowly to take the roof out.

I actually paused for a second before approaching the RPG guy. During the second attempt I basically rushed thru that particular section and I rolled right into a molotov, killing me instantly. Cruel game.

It's completely random. I think from now on I'm just going to roll around and go in a counter clockwise or clockwise position. Camping in that little area where the IT guy puts the servers back online is just asking for trouble.

The office cubicle area and when the building is burning can be pretty tough. In the second part of Chapter 6 you have no painkillers at all, which means it's crucial you kill off the few enemies because they will pick you off very quickly. I died from them a few times doing regular NYM.

The beginning of Chapter 14 sucks. The rest of the chapter isn't that bad apart from the Becker fight which has a very noticeable difficulty spike. The best song in Max Payne 3 is the one that starts right when you fight in the huge airport terminal area.

Chapter 13 is a bit more aggravating for me overall.

Yep the second part of that cubicle shootout is the most difficult section in NYMHC. Unfortunately no amount of practicing helps with that one. For Chapter 14 the main terminal can get hairy if you proceed too far, I found it best to take out everyone in the initial section first, then move to the second area and immediately run backwards and let them come to you.

For Chapter 13 I'd strongly advise you do that on chapter select. It's extremely easy once you have a plan in place.

  • Grab the grenade launcher after taking out the tank/enemies and blindfire it on the elevator section (be sure to shoot the windows out before you trigger the cutscene). Grab their rifles/ammo.
  • As soon as you enter the room with the RPD gunner - headshot the middle enemy, the one to your left and the one hiding in the far left of the office, you should be able to see him form the door you enter from, can't get flanked then.
  • In the room before you slow-mo kill everyone on the cart you'll get ambushed through the windows, Hit bullet time and go guns blazing, you'll take most of them out.
  • In the final section you can take everyone out from the second floor and only move to the stairs to trigger additional enemies, run back to the starting point and repeat, you'll also get the benefit of being able to shoot anyone in the offices on the lower level, or catch them as they're running out.
  • As soon as you've killed them you'll automatically end up downstairs in cover from the boss. Run underneath him to avoid being shot. He'll end your run even if you have 9 painkillers. An RPD can be found in the very first office (lefside) of the lower level. Just be wary of the two enemies that spawn after you shoot the first set of lights down.

Also quick tip for Chapter 9 - as soon as the level starts just bail over the wall, run forward a bit then shootdodge and take out the two enemies approaching from the alley. On my earlier attempts one of them ALWAYS threw a grenade at me or I wasted painkillers with the area being in such a tight space. Practice it in NYM mode, saves time, health and ammo.

Today i finished New york minute so I thought what the hell lets give hardcore a try.

Attempt 1:

Was playing very well, but i got instakilled by a molotov at the end on chapter 7.

Attempt 2:

A bit triggered from the last attempt so I did a stupid mistake on chapter 4 IV and got blown up by a car.

Attempt 3:

Played well but the game glitched on me. When i entered the warehouse in chapter 7 game was not able to load so when the cutsceen ended i was instakilled.

Will have to come back to it another time.

I would argue that Chapter 14 is actually harder in normal NYM because of the short amount of time you have, so I basically had to rush. I've seen a good number of YouTube NYMHC playthroughs with the timer over 15 - 20 minutes on the clock, giving you plenty of breathing space to take it slow.

  • It's also advised to be EXTREMELY WARY of your health when you use the grenade launcher. The elevator section with the smoke grenades and lasers is significantly easier with the grenade launcher, it almost trivializes it. But I actually went into LSM with the grenade launcher on normal NYM in this area. You will automatically fail because that weapon just doesn't work in NYM.
  • Completely stupid that the game freezes in this area for so many people that you have to utilize a specific strategy for it. Now, like the previous elevator section, you can make this office area easier with the grenade launcher. The LMG dude is much easier to deal with, but again you have the high risk of going into LSM with the grenade launcher.
  • The only 'real' dangerous enemy after the cart sequence is the sniper with the red laser. I don't recall if I've died to him or not, but I heard he doesn't allow you LSM, which if that's the case, then I'll have to make notes of.
  • This section isn't that bad. Only issue is triggering the enemies which will hide in their little corner until you get close enough.
  • As many people know, the boss doesn't allow LSM regardless if you have nine painkillers or none. On the left side I usually hide by the office cabinet and switch aiming shoulders so I can get shoot the ceiling. The four regular enemies that spawn during this boss fight can be a real nuisance, so it's best to take them out as soon as you can.

Yeah, already went into LSM at the beginning of Chapter 9 because I went after the guy going up the stairs killing the civilian.

So right now I'm on Chapter 10. Got the game and console on at my house, currently at work so won't be able to resume the game until later. Farthest I got so far and this is my fourth attempt. Should I die on Chapter 10 I will practice the later chapters on Chapter Select.

I will probably make a good 3 - 5 attempts after this one (should I not succeed) before I will put Max Payne 3 on hold and play other games. Sort of getting a little burnt out on it at this point.

Second attempt ended due to what I would presume is a glitch. Chapter 9 when you have to shoot the rocket fired from the guy in the helicopter, shot several times directly at it but didn't blow up then killed me. Across all my playthroughs that's never happened once it's quite frustrating that it happens on my NYMHC run lol.

Chapter 6 part 1 was my favorite part of the game. Something about the background music, the grim atmosphere, the bullets transpiercing the glass and the duality between the stone cold killer Max and the scared IT little boy was very fun to watch. My strategy was to always move, bullet time, headshot, move, rinse and repeat until you kill all of them. You also gotta stay away from the IT guy in the second part of the fight because he can get killed by a grenade that was aimed at you.

For Chapter 13, the trick was to get the grenade launcher to kill the guys coming from the elevators and then taking their rifle to kill the LMG guy up after. Using the grenade launcher against him is very effective but risky so it's up to you my friends.

Don’t do it bro! You got this! Don’t make the mistake I did and take a break for too long or you will risk creating a lot more work for yourself in the long run. I absolutely love this game, but I really regret the way I approached the trophies.

Like you, I burned myself out clearing the majority of the trophy list and decided to take a “short break” for a week or so before jumping into the arcade modes. Well as always happens when I take a break in a game, I end up getting deeply absorbed into other projects and then before you know it months have passed and your skills as rusty as shit. Then I made the utterly retarded choice to come back and grind out rank 50 with soft lock on, knowing full well that it would destroy my aim and muscle memory I’d built up to that point. At the time it seemed like a fair trade off, anything to lessen that awful grind!

Now I’ve been on another long “break” and keep putting off those final 2 trophies because I know I’m going to have to waste a lot of time running through the game a couple more times to get my aim back and re-familiarize myself with everything I’ve since forgotten. I will basically have to live & breathe Max Payne for a couple weeks.. again. Looking back I should have just pushed through the fatigue and jumped right into the arcade modes after finishing all the SP stuff. By the time I finished hardcore my skills were very polished and I had all the levels memorized.

Anyways just my advice. I’ll be jumping back in to finish this one soon. I signed up for the UR Cleanup event and chose this as one of my Tier 1 games to give myself the kick in the ass I’ve been waiting for. Yeehaw!!

The grenade launcher makes that section a whole lot easier. It’s probably best to use your side arms, then use either a rifle or grenade launcher to kill the LMG dude.

IMO grenade launcher on chapter 13 elevator is extremely risky. Sure you have a chance of clearing out the two elevators in matters of second but there is always a chance of getting ripped to shred by the laser guys before you even get a shot off or the grenade blowing you up. Once you last man standing with a grenade launcher good chances are you are dead. I've lost a NYM run because I've tried that stunt.

Better to be safe then sorry and play normal for that section, hiding under cover killing one at a time. Time is not much of a factor on the later chapter so it's kindly of pointless to risk it for more time. Nothing more frustrating then losing a good run due to a grenade launcher.

My advice would be to forget the grenade launcher. The risk isn't worth it.

@AJ_Radio Few tips that might ease the pain.

LMG guy in chapter 13 is actually really easy to dispatch. Not many people know this, but his weak point is his neck and will die after few bullets if you accurate enough.

Airport terminal section can be finish in literally 30 secs. When the section starts, take the right route and kill those 3 guys ONLY then keep running straight until you reach stairs, then just kill the guy on the 2nd floor that's right in front of you. Afterwards all you have to kill is the 3 guys right at the end of the section ( 1 is below, next to the gate that you'll exit and other 2 on the 2nd floor right above that guy I mentioned). After this last trio despatched, you'll get a kill cam which implies all those 10-15 other enemies simply disappeared and you can carry on without worrying about them.

There's an easy way to kill with it without any risk whatsoever. When you'll get into control of Max after the cutscene, quickly change to your weapon to GL, then shootdodge towards them through the window and shoot their direction. Then just wait until the 2nd elevator opens and send 1 more nade their direction as well. Works every time.

I personally wouldn't recommend this at all unless you're an expert at third person shooters, which going by your comment it sounds like you are. What I did was break the window in the room that triggers the cutscene, then just picked off the goons with the grenade launcher. Worked out pretty well, then I carefully used bullet time to kill off the last couple guys.

Problem with that is, you can still get hit while firing at them this way and in some cases go into LMS, which is risky.

If you shootdodge straight through the window, you invincible and kill them with a single grenade every time. Don't worry, it's pretty much impossible to fuck this shootdodge up.

Shootdodge leaves you vulnerable when you land on the ground though. I generally rarely use shootdodge unless I'm absolutely sure I know where all the enemies are located. I've gone into LMS many times because somebody pumped bullets into me when Max Payne was trying to get up off the ground from using a shootdodge.

This is what I did as well, but I must warn you that it's possible to accidentally shoot the ledge of the window in which you are hiding behind. I've actually seen a video of this happen to someone (can't remember who). Even though his reticle was clearly above the window ledge, he still hit it and he was instantly killed. Just another something to watch out for if you are using the grenade launcher behind cover here.

True, in this case though that won't be a problem , since all enemies will be dead before you hit the ground.

Third attempt. Enemies during the favela level wouldn't spawn which blocked me from proceeding past the door, these just keep getting better and better. @AJ_Radio yeah I'm playing offline with gold gun and music audio disabled. I agree with you that this gets tiresome, I was planning on getting it done today  but after the bullshit being tossed my way I think I'll limit myself to a run or two per day while playing shorter stuff in between. It's one thing to overcome a challenge but at this point I feel like the real challenge is not getting any weird bugs or freezes which I'm not a fan of.

Edit: After pausing the game to ramble a bit on these forums it seems the enemies have spawned once I unpaused it lmao you can't make this shit up. If anyone comes across this glitch I suppose pausing and waiting awhile is a way to fix it.

That sucks. I'm currently at Chapter 10 right now. There's a good chance I will die or panic, but having a glitch hours into the game must feel completely demoralizing. I'll take the tips regarding that office room in Chapter 13, hopefully my game won't freeze.

Two more attempts gone and done today:

Attempt #4: Chapter 10. The fight at the gas station just outside the bus graveyard. Entirely my fault. The sniper on top, used a *SHOTGUN* on him. He just falls down, but doesn't die. Within seconds he has his green laser on me. I kill a bunch of dudes by the bus, the sniper takes aim and immediately puts me into LMS mode. Cannot reach him, died a pathetic death due to my blunder.

Attempt #5: Chapter 6, Part 2. I died the exact same way on normal NYM on two different attempts. After you discover the IT kid is dead and you kill what Max Payne describes as the "corpse looting coward", two enemies enter the area. One of them doesn't normally pop out and shoot like he generally does, so I go into bullet time and eventually kill him. The second dude has a clear shot of me from the open, and before I can get a headshot in, he kills me. For how simple this part is, I fucking hate it.

Done on my third attempt. This could of went so wrong in the favelas when enemies wouldn't spawn but thankfully the glitch sorted itself out when I paused 😅. As for chapter 13, I stood by the entrance of the door for as long as I could before picking them off then I paused for about 10 minutes. After that I killed the last enemy with melee and the game didn't freeze. Best of luck to all yall going for this.
