For the fifth straight month, PlayStation 4 maintained its spot as the best-selling console in the US according to the NPD.

While specific sales figures were not made available, Sony wrote in a press release, "As we kick off the holiday season, we would like to take a moment to thank fans for making PlayStation 4 the best-selling console and #1 in software sales in September. PlayStation 4 was the number one console for NBA 2K16,Madden NFL 16Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and FIFA 16. Including the highly successful limited edition console bundle, PS4 also led retail sales for Destiny: The Taken King.

Regarding the NPD's, Microsoft's corporate VP of marketing, Mike Nichols, provided the following statement: "Xbox Onecontinued to see strong momentum in September on the heels of Forza Motorsport 6 and EA Sports FIFA 16, with solid year-over-year growth in console sales and strong engagement on Xbox Live. This holiday Xbox One owners will enjoy the greatest games lineup in the industry and in Xbox history, led by Halo 5: GuardiansRise of the Tomb RaiderFallout 4Call of Duty: Black Ops IIIStar Wars Battlefront, and the ability to play Xbox 360 games. Xbox One owners will have all this on the fastest, most social Xbox experience ever and with advanced hardware such as the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller. Xbox fans and first-time console buyers can look forward to an epic holiday!"

Overall, according The NPD Groups' Liam Callahan, "The majority of hardware platforms increased their sales from August 2015 to September 2015 when comparing sales on a per-week basis. All 8th generation consoles experienced double-digit growth when comparing sales on a per-week basis."

And compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360, the PS4 and Xbox One are showing strong growth with combined sales that are "40 percent higher than the combined 23 month totals for PS3 and360."

Year on year, the comparison is less rosy, with September 2015 sales down 23 percent compared to September 2014. Callahan attributes part of this to the strong performance of Destiny last year, adding "Contrary to past months, hardware sales declines were seen across 8th generation consoles, 7th generation consoles, and portables.”

The PS4 was also the best-selling console in August, though the holidays will be an interesting time for Sony. While Microsoft has several exclusive games lined up, including Rise of the Tomb Raider and Halo 5Sony will be relying on its new partnership with Activision in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 to maintain its lead.

As for September's top 10 titles, sports games dominated the month, with Madden and NBA 2K16 beating out The Taken King and The Phantom Pain.

Awesome. If Sony in any way could win this month its fucking insane lol since Halo 5 is releasing. In November Xbone has Tomb Raider and Backwards Compatibility releasing. Personally I think Tomb Raider will be crazy overshadowed by Fallout 4 :S

But its going to be intresting to see what happens, if Sony wins October its insane lol.

Also, Sony broke a PSN record this month too I saw :P

Let's see if Backward Compatibility is really the system-seller next month that a bunch of loud internet posters claimed it'll be. Also curious to see what percentage of Xbox360 games support it. Doesn't look like any new games have been added since the announcement and the official "Comprehensive list" pdf only shows 25 games. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/backward-compatibility

Xbox is pretty much done in Japan it seems. Scalebound looks really nice but eh..

I'm no owner of a PS4 right now but damn is it getting tempting for me to buy one soon when I can.

This really pains me to no end. I love Hideki Kamiya's work (Devil May Cry, Ookami, Bayonetta), but ever since Bayonetta, it seems like he's been giving Sony consoles the finger. Nintendo I can kind of understand, since it's also a Japanese company (even though games like Bayonetta 2 would be far and away more at home on PS4 than on Wii U), but now also Scalebound... on Xbox One?... There are barely any Japanese with any kind of Xbox!... Come on, Kamiya, just give Playstation some love again!...

I will probably get a PS4 next year as well. The PS3 has been suiting my needs so far since most games I want have also had a PS3 release, but it looks like it'll finally start getting left behind next year.

Making games do not depend on the anything else but the amount of potential sales. P Games are the only Japanese mid size developers aiming for international stardom not just in their own country.

Microsoft really botched the release of the Xbox one. That no used games policy that were going to go with initially really put a lot more appeal into the PlayStation 4. I still meet people to this day that beleive that policy is still in place and they are core gamers. Imagine them trying to make the casual audience believe they reversed it. All in all I think it will be an uphill battle for Microsoft for the rest of the eighth generation.

My feeling is that Halo: MCC did more to mess up Halo fans' goodwill and I don't think sales for Halo 5 will be that great as a result. There are STILL things not fixed with Halo: MCC and 343i doesn't seem to have any solution lined up. Some of the major problems are inherent in the game's multiplayer (party system still broke, etc.)

Microsoft will basically try to buy their way out of their problems (they did that in the PC sector, so why not the consoles?)

I would hug my PS4 but it might hurt. ;)

All the more reason, then. The Xbox One and especially the Wii U keep being outsold by the PS4 everywhere, not to mention the PS4 has more power than both of them. If you're aiming for the most amount of sales, then it stands to reason that you make games for the most popular console, especially if that console's gamers are the kind of crowd that would end up buying your games in the first place (as if people get Wii U's to buy mature action titles or Xbox Ones to buy Japanese games in general). Also, the Japanese market is pretty big and it would be pretty foolish to alienate nearly 100% of it by making games for a console that nearly no one has in that country. Especially when the competition is crushing it not just in Japan but everywhere.

It's like making a game for the original Xbox or the Gamecube in the 6th generation. Yeah, you're going to have some international sales, but it's going to be a small fraction of what they'd be if you'd just made the game for the Playstation 2 (and the Playstation 2 was the weakest console in terms of processing power in that generation!).
