Automatic Update Not Working

Recommended Posts

Been a PS+ subscriber since 2012 and only within the last month have I noticed that when I turn my PS3 on, game save data wasn't uploaded to the cloud. Normally when I'd sign in, it'd have a screen showing a list of patches downloaded and/or games saved to the cloud. Now it just starts like normal. I've changed the time to the two-hour window I'm currently at, turn on a game, do a quick save and then turn off the PS3 and it'll then do an auto update, but when I turn my PS3 back on, I don't get the screen saying the game was saved on the cloud and when checking the save data, it's clear it wasn't saved either.

I've done an Internet search and this was the closest I got, but it was four years ago (and yes, I tried doing what the one person suggested, but to no avail): http://www.gamespot.com/forums/playstation-nation-1000002/automatic-update-not-working-28867752/

Each individual game can have the auto uploads disabled. Did you check to make sure that you have auto uploads enabled for the games you wanted auto uploaded? It could also mean that your online storage space is full though that's not as likely.

If it was only within the past 24 hours I would have said that it was because PSN was having problems for the past 24 hours but the way you're describing it it seems like it's been going on longer.

To activate a certain game, press triangle on it and ask to activate automatic uploads. Games like Destiny do not use savefiles, so obviously they can't be uploaded. Every game you start on the ps3 for the first time asks if you want to automatically upload their files, it never asks again, but you can do so manually as I stated before.

I did a google search and came up with this.

I was just as confused - but like @EllieMental, it looks like some games can't separate between 'save files' and what I would consider game data.  In my case it was SSX which puts both the save file and your ghost-data (for previous runs) all in the save-files folder (the save file is a few KB, the ghost data is 100MB-ish).

Now I would argue that this is an issue with the game author not storing the data in the correct place, but then again the PS3 cannot set the auto-upload to include / exclude specific files for a game (its all or nothing for any title).

If you run down your save-files locally on the PS3 and look at the size of all the files, you'll probabaly see lots of small ones - and one or 2 massive ones. They are your problems.

Unfortunately the only fix is to insert the game disk and disable the auto-upload entirely for this title - then go back to the 'dark ages' and manually upload the smaller 'real' save files for your backup.

Mental note to PS+ suggestions - allow us to exclude specific files from auto-upload...

This seems like it might be the issue. It's worth checking your save files at least. I just checked mine and SSX was uploading the 101MB file to the cloud. I still had 800MB free but if you have every game uploading and you have a few games with larger files like that then it might cause the problem.

Glad I'm not alone on this. I spoke with Sony on the 5th Jan about this issue. As a result of this call, I switched off the automatic updates, deactivated the game and video options under account management, restored file system and rebuilt the database. Then I reactivated the game and video options, switched on automatic updates, played (and saved) about six games and the following morning - nothing. No summary as to what had been saved to online storage. I'll call them again today (7th Jan) and provide an update.

Today's update: Sony won't take this further until I have deleted and reinstalled all the games - i:e 150 GB of data to see if this will resolve the issue, despite what I've previously been advised to do.

@Kuuhaku good luck. I'm gonna save my data to a USB and cancel my subscription to PS Plus. I tweeted Sony on Friday who told me to contact the helpdesk. The helpdesk are in denial that a problem exists and wouldn't take this any further until I delete and reinstall all my games. This is absurd and a complete waste of time.

Well I just started having issues with it too. I'm on with ps support right now. Hopefully I can get some answers.

Nothing came of it. I guess if enough people bring it to their attention, they might do some research into it.

Conversation log:

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 11:48:55 AM): Hello, My name is DeAnthony how may I assist you today?

Me (1/10/2016, 11:49:20 AM): Hi. I've been having problems with downloading content on my ps3 from the web store as well as ps plus auto uploads.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 11:50:18 AM): I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 11:50:27 AM): I would be happy to help you with this today, Although you have entered information about a SEN account before this chat, could you please provide the following to confirm the *exact* account you need assistance with?

-  Online ID

- Phone Number

Me: *response removed*

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 11:53:50 AM): Thank you providing me with this information, Please allow me one moment while I look into this.

Me (1/10/2016, 11:55:06 AM): alright

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 11:56:33 AM): Do you have your ps3 activated?

Me (1/10/2016, 11:56:39 AM): Yes.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 11:57:35 AM): Can you tell me what exactly happens with you try to download from the web store?

Me (1/10/2016, 11:58:15 AM): The ps3 shows the message "You have content available to download from the ps store. Please wait a moment." and then instead of downloading it, it goes to the XBM.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 11:59:29 AM): So this happens on the ps store on the console not the website itself?

Me (1/10/2016, 11:59:55 AM): This happens when turning on the ps3 or every few minutes that I have the XBM active.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:00:49 PM): On the web store, the items are in my download queue and the webstore says "Your content will download once your PS3 is turned on. You can set your PS3 to automatically check for updates and pending downloads."

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:06:57 PM): And you have tried downloading them in the download list on the console correct?

Me (1/10/2016, 12:07:45 PM): They will work when downloading from the download list on the console, but I would prefer downloading them from the webstore because the searching is easier. They stopped doing such after the most recent psn outage.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:08:37 PM): The automatic trophy list syncing and uploading of saves to the cloud also stopped after the outage.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:09:05 PM): *automatic uploading of save to the cloud

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:10:48 PM): I see, okay one moment while I do some research on this issue, try to not get timed out okay.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:11:13 PM): Alright. Thanks. I will type attempt not to time out if it tries to time me out.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:15:59 PM): When to try to download from the web store what does it tell you?

Me (1/10/2016, 12:16:51 PM): It gives the normal message on the ps3. "You have content available from the playstation store. Please wait." or something along those lines. I can attempt it again right now to give you the exact words.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:17:57 PM): Okay have you try deact and react your console?

Me (1/10/2016, 12:18:07 PM): I have tried but I can try again.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:19:02 PM): I just did so and am restarting it now.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:19:32 PM): Same problem.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:21:56 PM): Ask him if anything is here: https://store.playstation.com/#!/en-us/download/queue

Me (1/10/2016, 12:22:24 PM): I have 30 items currently on that page for my ps3.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:25:53 PM): Okay try removing all of it on your queue and try adding them back on.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:26:02 PM): Ok.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:27:56 PM): I readded them. I'll try resetting the ps3 now.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:31:01 PM): The ps3 is reset but I haven't gotten the message yet.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:31:13 PM): They also haven't started downloading.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:35:21 PM): And your ps3 is activated correct?

Me (1/10/2016, 12:35:25 PM): Yes.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:38:08 PM): and nothing yet?

Me (1/10/2016, 12:38:21 PM): Not since resetting.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:39:35 PM): I'll try resetting another time.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:40:41 PM): The message came up this time but nothing was downloaded.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:43:55 PM): Okay, we exhausted every troubleshooting step, I apologize but unfortunately it seems that you will have to download them from the console instead from the web store.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:44:17 PM): What about the autouploading of save files and trophy list sycning?

Me (1/10/2016, 12:45:23 PM): I know of others with this problem as well. They are on the psnprofiles.com forums and their autouploads haven't been working correctly since the outage.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:47:05 PM): The following links are the discussions of this issue. http://psnprofiles.com/forums/topic/33919-automatic-update-not-working/and http://psnprofiles.com/forums/topic/33961-ps-auto-update/

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:49:28 PM): Automatically storing saved data

You can automatically store new and recently updated saved data in online storage on a regular basis.

You must set this feature for each individual game.

1.

Under  (Game), select the game with the saved data you want to save and press the triangle button.

2.

Select [saved Data Auto-Upload] and set it to [On].

Me (1/10/2016, 12:49:52 PM): I have them set for games but they haven't been auto uploading correctly.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:49:57 PM): trophies you just needs to check your trophies on the console to sync it.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:50:49 PM): It's supposed to upload every night at the time designated in the system settings. It gives the same problem as trying to download games from the web store. The correct message shows but nothing happens.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:51:14 PM): There are no error codes afterwords and the uploads don't happen.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:55:43 PM): You may need to go to your settings and set it up again.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 12:56:18 PM): Settings - > System Settings -> Automatic Downloads

Me (1/10/2016, 12:57:26 PM): I have it turned on. I set it for 12pm-2pm because it's 1pm now. I'll turn it off and attempt to have it auto upload.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:57:55 PM): The system is turning on to do the automatic update now.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:58:04 PM): it's displaying the correct message.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:58:17 PM): The ps2 is now off.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:58:22 PM): *ps3

Me (1/10/2016, 12:58:33 PM): I'm turning it on now.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:59:08 PM): There is no message stating that the auto upload was successful or what has occurred during the auto upload.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:59:29 PM): I'm checking the cloud storage now.

Me (1/10/2016, 12:59:51 PM): The save files for the game I had set to autoupload are not there.

Me (1/10/2016, 1:00:11 PM): My free space for cloud storage is 940MB/1024MB

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 1:07:26 PM): Try waiting until 2pm then see if it uploaded the data, if not the you may want to go to safe mode "restore file system" that's all I got on this matter, this is a strange issue that I've haven't encountered.

Me (1/10/2016, 1:08:37 PM): It was working fine until the outage last week. The two may be related, but it could also be a coincidence.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 1:09:22 PM): Maybe or preexisting issue that just surfaced now anyway Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Me (1/10/2016, 1:09:42 PM): That's all. Thank you for your time, even though we couldn't fix the issue.

DeAnthony (1/10/2016, 1:10:08 PM): Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience.

For his comment about restoring the file system, I did that before contacting support.

I still have this issue. Nothing changed on my end, it just stopped updating automatically around the same time as you, Dec 19. I can still send saves manually.

The helplessdesk will never aknowledge an issue, even if they are aware. But they do keep track of complaints. Id be happy with a ninja-fix.

I filed a complaint with the Playstation Helpdesk (in the UK) last week after the last call I had with them. They emailed me just now to say they are investigating the issue with Automatic Updates. Its progress, not much, but better than saying that the problem doesn't exist.

I appreciate your constant updates on the matter and am glad that A, I'm not the only one having issues and B, they're looking into it. Hopefully this issue gets resolved in a positive manner.

My last auto-update was on December 23rd, 2015. Noticed this a few days ago when I updated my profile on here, only to discover that the auto-update didn't work. This happening right after the PSN was down seems all too fishy to me personally. This has affected a lot of people Globally, and I hope Sony fixes this soon.

I too have been having this problem. Nothing at all is automatically updating. Glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I thought it was maybe something I did to my system (maybe I messed around with the settings and didn't remember) but I've double checked and triple checked, everything is the way it should be. Hopefully this problem gets fixed soon.

Just got an email from Playstation support saying that you have to rebuild your database in order to fix the problem. Needless to say, it didn't work. None of the 'safe mode' options seemed to have worked. I replied to them saying as much and still waiting to hear back. I will keep everyone updated with anything that helps on their end.
