Should I get the freedom cry DLC as a stand alone or with the base game?

Get it as DLC, not the stand alone. The game only seems to work when you're signed out, otherwise it freezes.

I'd grab the standalone version. Depending on how much you love AC, if you're like me and an incredibly casual fan to the series, then this game is way big enough to stand on it's own. I paid 6 or 7 bucks for the standalone version years ago and it's well worth that, plus, don't have to put in a disc, or even keep the disc. The reason I say it's big enough to stand on it's own is, if I was in your spot, I could easily just sell number 4 (though admittedly not for much nowadays) and Freedom Cry would keep me entertained.

 

Anywho, do whatever, but I personally love standalone DLC. I just hope that Dying Light: The Following goes standalone someday.

I had a lot of problems with the PS3 stand alone version - I could barely make it to the title screen without a crash - until I played offline, like a previous post mentioned. However, it only crashed once or twice on PS4, and the DLC versions ran perfectly.

 

If it were me, I'd get all 4 (2xstandalone, 2xDLC), but if I had to pick one, I'd go with the DLC so that AC IV wouldn't remain unfinished.

When it came out i bought the standalone version to play Freedom Cry without still having AC IV... Some days ago i bought the season pass for AC IV to complete it to 100% trophies. So that's why i bought it a second time. Think about about it, whether it bothers you do to 100% on AC IV or not...
