Overwatch Beta: Thoughts & Discussion

PREDRAG-K

Recommended Posts

For those of you who don't know, you can download the beta for free on PSN Store. It has been extended until May 10th. The game releases on May 24th for $60.

For those playing it already, what do you think? Is it everything you thought it would be? Is it disappointing? What characters do you like/dislike? Who needs to be nerfed/buffed?

I personally am loving it. All the characters are fun in their own way. So far, Tracer is my best to use. I like Symmetra, but I feel like she needs a small boost to damage or maybe range on her weapon. Most of the kills I get are from her turrets. Winston is another fun one, though I'm not doing too well as him so far. Bastion definitely needs a nerf, his mounted turret mode is ridiculously OP.

Otherwise, I really enjoy the game. I never really paid attention to it before, but I'm glad I gave the beta a try. I plan on picking up on release day now.

I am loving it as well, I'm rocking right now as Hanzo and Reaper.

I think Bastion's turret is annoying, but I wouldn't say it's overpowered. You can deal with it with Hanzo long range arrows, Widow's Sniper, or D.VA/Reinhardt's charge attacks, but he is really annoying when Bastion's team is defending, along with Thorbjorn.

I've yet to try out the support characters with the exception of Mercy, but everyone else seems fun so far.

It's great. There's not much more I can say than that. I've been waiting to play this game since it was announced and it's great.

D.va and Mei are the characters I like using the most, but every character is good. Zarya seem weak, but I've heard she got nerfed pretty hard in the alpha so it's probably because of that.

However, the algorithm that makes the Play of the Game and Highlights is trash.

Edit: Just look at some of these Highlights, some are good while others are mystifying on how they are Highlights.

I still think It's an absurd they're going to sell it at $60.

Anyway, I found it fun, just didn't like a few OP characters.

Can't help but feel like 60 bucks is too much. Also wants to see if the game will have support on consoles too.Game's great, though. Been playing with Widowmaker and Reinhardth

Well the game really costs $40. It's the origin edition that costs $60. I'm not sure why console players are forced to get the origin edition especially since half of the stuff you get in it is useless on console. All you can use are the skins in overwatch and the Mercy wings in Diablo 3. The World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm stuff is unusable on consoles. Edited by S-Brawl3r

I had a good time. As most people have pointed out, there's some balancing issues. This might just be due to people not knowing how to counter Bastion yet, but i wouldn't be surprised to see him get nerfed before release. I'm still unsure if i'll get it or not. I had a lot of fun with the game and it seems deep enough for me to dig my teeth in, but i don't feel like there's quite enough content to justify spending 60 bucks on it. 40 would be a Day One purchase, 60 i'll have to see.

I decided to download the beta yesterday out of curiosity since I do not play much online games and I'm enjoying the beta much more than I thought I would have. I have only been using Mercy as I really love her aesthetics, gameplay role and feels like a perfect character for me.

It's pretty fun, my fave characters so far are Pharah, Tracer and Hanzo. Though as much as i like the game it has too little content to be a day one buy, and the devs have said the beta is the whole game at launch, minus one competitive mode.

Also Hanamura is the worst map for attacking if the other team has several Bastions and Thorbjorn's.

the game is very solid and fun .but i dont think it is a 60$ game (just my opinion) I would have gladly jumped on if it were like 40$

if you wait for a sale on games like these most of the people have already moved on with only hardore playbase still playing. so you then ,playing for the first time will have a bad time. so I am going to skip on this

I'm loving it! More so than the Battleborn Beta, here it feels like every character can kill others, as opposed to Battleborn where everyone seems to be a tank and you usually get a lot of assists depending on who you're playing as... *ahem* Oscar Mike...

There are only three things i'm not liking:

  1. The way you unlock stuff - this is by far my biggest complain, what we have here is a f2p way of handling the currency and these loot boxes, every time you level up you get one loot box with four random items, if you get a duplicate you will earn (i think) 15 of the currency, and that's the only way of earning money in-game. I'm really not a fan of this and i'm assuming the currency or the loot boxes will be the microtransactions.
  2. There is no SP - yeah, this game doesn't and won't have any type of single-player campaign from what i've read. While the MP and co-op modes are fun, i'd love to play SP missions that would dive into the characters' stories, if you go in the Overwatch site you can see an overview of the characters and their backgrounds, there is nothing like that in the game and i'd never know that D.Va's real name is Hana Song.
  3. Bastion - now, i'm not saying this guy is OP, but damn is he annoying, i main Tracer, Mercy & Widowmaker, all of which have low health because of their roles and Bastion always 1-hit kills me with his turrent form, it's like you have to use a tank to defeat him because 90% of the time he has team mates around and Tracer or Widowmaker can't kill him by themselves.

Other than that, there is the fact that you can switch heroes mid-game and that you can stack the same hero. This hasn't been troublesome yet and i've only seen 3 people max stacking the same character but i think it could be a problem later on when people figure out how to use Bastion and Mercy. Imagine a team with 4 Bastions and 2 Mercys? (what's the plural of Mercy?), the Bastions would camp as a turrent and the Mercys would heal and power them up. O_O

I've pumped in about 8 hours so far, and even if Uncharted 4 came early I'd wait until Tuesday to start it, just so I can get a few more matches of Overwatch in :)

Before Rainbow Six Siege, I was tired of the genre, but the level of tactical thinking and teamwork required in Siege brought me back. Months after moving on from Siege, Overwatch is a more than worthy replacement at hogging my gaming time. I love everything, the characters are all great, the map variety, the abilities, the plethora of unlocks. Everything is so polished, even though this is a demo it feels like the games been out for years and I'm playing a finely tuned and balanced version. My character selections so far have been:

Offense - Tracer (1/2 of game time spent with her, really well balanced character and very fun to play) and Mccree (When Tracer isn't working, Mccree is good for a slower pace offensive).

Defense - Bastion (Admittedly rarely play Defense, Bastion is always my go-to pick though, it's awesome getting on a balcony overlooking the objective and going to town).

Tank - Reinhardt (Shield, Hammer and charge make him my fav tank, he has definitely been a game changer in securing last minute wins).

Support - Mercy (Healing and Damage buff can make an average team unstoppable, plus her sidearm is actually quite powerful), Symmetra (Different kind of support, turrets in a room with a teleporter and your teams recovery time is slashed in half)

My only gripes are minor niggles:

- Currency is too rare to get, a low amount should be awarded at the end of every match, maybe based on performance. Maybe even let Loot Crates be bought with currency, say... 200? If Blizzard are going down the route of Hearthstone packs with the loot crates, I feel it punishes long-time players by only giving out free crates on level ups, as the higher level you are, the longer you wait until the next reward.

- There're some minor balancing that should be sorted out. Bastion isn't too bad, but I feel his transformation animation should be longer than what it currently is, his turn speed while in turret mode should be reduced, and his minigun ammo should be swapped with an overheat system to avoid wasteful shooting. Mei needs a slight nerf but I'm not sure how, maybe buff her long range charge icicle attack, but make the time-to-freeze on her primary fire mode longer? It's too hard to escape her freeze stuff with anyone other that heroes with movement leap abilities (Tracer, Winston, Reinhart etc). On the buff front, I feel that Symmetra and Zenyatta all need slight damage buffs.

- While i have no problem paying £40 for the origins edition, the fact that the standard £30 edition isn't available for consoles could really hurt the games sales if people feel the lack of single player content is a turn off.

Closing thoughts, 10/10 experience from the 8 hours I have played. Day 1 buy. All heroes are distinct and characterised very well in comparison to other games (cough Evolve cough)

Just played a game against 3 Bastions, 1 Mercy, and 1 Trob. We had to attack the objective that they were defending. Needless to say, we didn't have a chance.

I did play as a bunch of different people though. Right now, my 3 best characters are Tracer, D.Va, and Hanzo.

I've waited for this game since it was announced and its finally here for PS4. So far I'm 35 hours in and the game continues to amaze me. I haven't enjoyed a game as much as this one in quite some time, I didn't expect less anyway.  The game lived up the hype for me, and that's hard because my expectations were high. Everyone should give it a shot, even if you don't like online-only games like myself.

And yeah, Bastion is pretty annoying sometimes, but with a well coordinated team is easy to eliminate, even solo with Genji (if he has no people around).

I think it's great. Been waiting forever for blizzard to bring a moba to consoles. The best thing is every character is technically already balanced. I probably can name everyones alternate character from DOTA2.
