Popular Post Parker
This is a great read, thank you for answering all these questions my good sir. 1. You're the header and trophy card editor here at PSNP, what exactly does that entail? Be honest, is the first step in finding a new image a Google search? Yes actually! Google image search is actually a great place to start out It has really good options to filter down your search and it also has cool features like image matching and other neat things like that – it works wonders with helping me find images for Japanese games and things like that as well. That being said, only about 25% of the images really come straight from Google Image Search. Since the header images are really wide and high resolution, it turns out that I have to venture out and go to particular places to find official art that fits well in a really wide format. You’re probably thinking wallpaper websites, but that’s not actually it! I don’t want to reveal my top secret methods of making our site the one with the coolest header and trophy card images, but it’s interesting where developers decide to put the best of their artwork onto the internet – places that don’t usually show up on Google images but also places they want the public to see the art. Some of those places are actually pretty obvious but you won’t notice them very easily unless you’re really looking out for it. I’d say there’s another 25% of the images that need a lot of editing to be able to fit the header image area really well. For example it actually took several hours to construct the header for The Division by finding and then stitching together 7 different art assets into 18 different layers for that game. A well edited header image is one that just looks official and is just edited like crazy but nobody notices. On the backend of the site, I first upload the full source image and any image that is edited usually looks like a mess of layers and crappy edits outside of the area that’s cropped. Interestingly enough, it’s Japanese games that usually need a lot of editing to fit to a header image. Japanese games have a ton of artwork on the internet, but they usually aren’t high resolution or don’t fit the header area well all the time. I think posters are big in Japan so they don’t want high-res art out in the wild. Annoyingly, some developers just don’t care about putting all their artwork out on display and making it easily accessible like Rockstar Games does with what is practically a wallpaper art display on the Grand Theft Auto V website. I thought years ago indie games would be the biggest headache to find art for, but it’s actually mostly the major AAA games! Developers may have their key piece of artwork lying around for example but it could take months for the actual full piece of artwork in its highest resolution, at its widest and tallest dimensions to hit the internet. Recently I had that trouble with The Division and Mirror’s Edge Catalyst for example, and ended up having to do a lot of editing magic. I’m currently having that problem with Final Fantasy XV and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare actually, but I usually manage to scramble and whip something up. It’s a lot about just staying on the lookout, like I remember recently one of the artists at Guerilla Games tweeted a Dropbox link or something for really great wallpaper art for Horizon Zero Dawn, but Guerilla never posted those images anywhere else – the guy just decided to tweet a dropbox link to these high quality wallpapers one day. Seriously? Square Enix had this unveiling on their blog of the official main piece of artwork for Final Fantasy XV, the only problem was that the artwork was only 700 pixels wide. That’s right, they proudly unveiled their key artwork in their blog post as a 700 pixel wide image… So now I have to check every now and then if they released the actual fullsize thing in some sort of capacity. The answer is that they still haven’t! That looks like some nice artwork Square Enix, it’s a shame the main characters face is composed of maybe 20 pixels. If that 700 pixel wide image were to be applied as a header image here on the site, it would be a blurry mess, haha c’mon Square Enix! Some developers like Rockstar and Bungie do a pretty good job at displaying their art in high resolution for all to see, but there are others like Guerrilla Games and EA Sports that are just bad at it – it’s inconsistent and it’s always an adventure for me – I suppose this keeps things fun for me. There are reasons for developers not showing off their art sometimes, like maybe developers don’t release high res art on the internet because they want to sell artbooks and posters, but I wish more developers just showed off their artwork better. I really love gaming artwork, it’s “modern art” that is actually really well done most of the time in my opinion and it sucks I sometimes have to go an extra mile to stitch together a bunch of parts of this piece of art to make a developer’s game look good on PSNProfiles, but in the end it’s totally worth it. When the new site update releases, I'll have to worry about new challenges with header images, like recropping all of the images to fit the new dimensions and finding some new ones here and there to make things fresh and new. Oh yeah, also the fact that I'll finally be able to edit the new trophy cards, which will be a whopping nearly 5,000 new images! lol - I think it's a lot of fun though. 2. Which trophy banner is your favorite? Oh that’s a tough one, I really like the header images for games like Grand Theft Auto V, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, and Kingdom Hearts games (1, 2, & BBS) for example. I also like the one for Gravity Rush because it looks great but I also like propping my laptop on its side so the buildings are rightside up. There’s also some really cool ones I like that I have lined up for when the new site update rolls around like Medal of Honor Warfighter (If you’re in the beta, you can see it!). There’s so many good ones, I really can’t think of an all-time favorite though, it’s like I have a new favorite every month. Usually I set my profile banner image for one I’m excited about for in the future. There’s a certain style of art I really like usually used in most triple-a games, sort of this clean, sharp look. Western games have a sort of painted sharp style I like, which games like Assassin’s Creed Liberation, Bioshock Infinite, and Destiny (The original launch artwork), and so on all have. There’s a lot of Japanese games that have a sharp, more flat but a sort of “shiny” and vibrant look to them I always think look cool - Ys VIII for example has great artwork, Kingdom Hearts, and also Hyperdimension Games. I also tend to like art with blue in it, I usually have my profile image as blue or some hint of blue in it because it feels like it just expands forever versus having like an image with a black background because it feels like it ends right there. Plus PSNProfiles color is blue, so blue must be the best, right? I think my favorite right now might be for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst. The city backdrop is really cool, it’s blue, Faith is centered and “fits” really well in the header area too. It’s sort of the ideal header image for a game – took a bit of editing to make it that way. 3. You have had the same avatar for quite a while, is there a story behind it or do you just really like the game? The funny thing about my avatar is that I've never actually played a Buzz game! After naming myself BlindMango on PSN back when I created my account one of the next options was to choose an avatar, in 2007 there was a list of not too many avatars so I was saying to myself "wouldn't it be awesome if there was an avatar that looked like a blind fruit?" And there it was! Buzz basically looked like a fruit of some sort with hair and glasses, I don't even think I knew about the game at the time. But since then I've kept it, I haven't seen a PSN avatar that seems better so I’ve just stuck with it for the past decade! Now I just refuse to change it 4. What are the origins of your PSN name? So when I joined PSN I wanted to make a name without numbers and things like that, I also wanted a name I wouldn’t hate a decade later like Xx420-_-NoScOpEz-xX. I also was 100% certain that Sony wouldn’t allow name changing for a long time (turns out I was right!) so I really took a lot of time trying to make sure I made a name I’d love. There really isn’t much of a meaning to my name, I don’t even think I really ever ate a mango at the time either and I’ve never heard of the band “Blind Melon” at the time (A lot of people would ask me about that as the years went on). A lot of what I tried was already taken so I started combining stuff. BlindMango wasn’t taken, it sounded good, so I went with that! I still really like this name a lot to this day and I’m glad I came up with it. 5. Do you enjoy being on the guide team? How much effort does it take to review guides and how many do you review a day? I like being a part of the guide team, but it’s a lot of work! A lot of people probably don’t truly understand the amount of pure work that has to be put into reviewing and helping guide writers with almost every guide. Depending on the guide writer, it could take minutes to review a guide or it could take hours! It depends on how complex the guide is (formatting, wording, etc) or the amount errors in it and how much feedback we have to write to the author as a result. Usually 1 or 2 guides are reviewed a day unless it gets crazy and some days we get lucky and we don’t get any submissions and get a break. I’ve never gotten burnt out of managing images or anything else on the site, but there are a few times (mostly around the start of the guide system) where I just had to take a break from the guide team for a few weeks. If you do too much at one time with guides, it can really take a toll on you! So I enjoy being on the guide team, helping people out is really fun for me, but truthfully it’s never actually been my favorite thing to do on the site. In the end, what I love is helping people make some really awesome guides, being part of the guide system since the beginning, and watching it grow into something that’s now pretty big! Last year with the Guide of the Year Awards I shared some stats about how the guide system has been growing, it’s been cool to watch! I love being a part of its beginnings. 6. How did you end up on the guide team? Around the time the guide system launched on the site, Sly set up a guide team of about 4 or 5 people from the community. I told Sly if they needed a helping hand that I could help out because it seemed like a fun thing to do, I also told him I wrote guides on a previous gaming blog site I was at and things like that. I don’t think he responded to me immediately about that actually, but about two weeks later he messaged me and said “Hey, you're on the guide team” and needless to say that was a pretty exciting moment! Then I saw the review queue and I think I know why he added me when he did, there were 60 guides in the review queue, and that number is not exaggerated! There were so many guides that had been building up for those past few weeks and it seemed like there was slight panic among the guide team because of it. To put it into perspective, there is typically one or two guides in the review queue at one single time now, if it gets to 4 guides that starts feeling overwhelming, but 60? Hah, that was insanity! At the time the guide team was like “Okay, we’re sorting through all this by just starting at the top and going through them one at a time,” no matter how inefficient that was. Instead of doing that I went to the back of the queue and started unpublishing anything that was clearly unfinished or leaving feedback on easy things and going from there. I remember getting the queue from 60 to 20 guides at a certain point and that feeling like a massive relief. Crisis averted! After that it started to get less crazy and we started to figure it all out and get a flow. Sometimes I wonder what would’ve happened with the guide system if I wasn’t put there to help out or if the original crew would’ve ended up doing the same We didn’t actually get the queue empty until October 2014, a whole 6 months after the guide system launched. Since then people like simula and Dragon have joined the guide team and watching how it grows and using the very guides I approve when I play through my games is really cool. I’m really proud of what the team and all of the community has managed to accomplish over the past two and a half years! And that’s how I ended up on the guide team 7. If you had to guess, how many hours a day do you spend on PSNP? It seems like I probably spend about 3 full hours a day on the site on average, some days I spend less and some days I spend more. I love being here on my free time when I can, what I do as a staff member is actually a ton of fun in my opinion and I've been really happy doing it for the past 3 years. 8. How did you find the site and get your start here? Ahh this is a great question. It's gonna be a bit of a story so hang on to your seats! So I guess I should start by saying I was always fascinated in trophies ever since achievements were launched on the Xbox. Trophies were actually originally announced as being a feature in a never released “ ” in PlayStation Home, with every game having 3D modeled trophies, eventually though they launched in their current form in 2008. When they did launch I instantly started collecting them for all of my games, interestingly enough without knowing what a completion rate was I always had the goal of trying to get all the trophies I could for the games I owned and I always had hopes for improvements of the trophy system in the future, I never a fathomed at the time a site like this existing. One day in about the summer of 2012 I decided to type my PSN ID into Google just to see what came up, and YourGamerCards (Press F to Pay Respects) showed up. I thought it was really cool how that site worked, I knew about sites like PlayStationTrophies.org by then but had no idea at the time sites like this existed. I bookmarked that site because I thought it was cool but never really went back to it very much. Then around November 2012 I decided to type my name into Google again... A different site showed up - PSNProfiles! I clicked on it and well, I thought everything about it was amazing! I'm a very visual person, so to me it's important that something functions well but it’s essential it also looks great doing it. Looking back now, the site now looks a little dated but at the time it looked incredible! Many of the game pages and my profile were headed with artwork, the design of everything was so clean and simple, it was something I had no idea existed and always wanted that I now found… I couldn’t believe it was a thing and I fell in love! Click on it, it makes it bigger! I took a picture at the time of what my profile looked like. Hey maybe some of you probably remember when it looked like this! Simpler times… Ever since 2008 when the trophy system launched I had always been fascinated in trophies but finding this site... Something made me really feel at home. I remember the moment I found the site I was in a party in Modern Warfare 2 with a few friends just chatting with them, laying on my bed with my Vita playing Assassin's Creed III Liberation with the trophy list page on my laptop in front of me, with that awesome artwork of Aveline that's still there today, telling my friends how awesome this site is I just found, with the ongoing joke of my obsession of trophies among me and my friends only being proven more at this point. This isn't a joke by the way, this is really how it happened! So, what I really loved about this site is visually how nice it looked, Sly has always been a genius at building and designing this website in my opinion. Those header images were always so cool to me, but it had never clicked in my head that somebody managed those – I think when most people visit a site like IGN and see the artwork and images all over it they just think “Oh it’s part of the site” and they don’t think about the fact that somebody painstakingly does all of those, it’s kind of how I thought about it at the time for this site. So the header image for Grand Theft Auto IV used to be this random screenshot of Star Junction (Times Square) with a taxi, it was kind of a boring image. One day while playing the game, I refreshed the page and it just changed to what the image it is now. I went to the homepage and saw a forum post called "Header Images". This is where it all started to line up for me, I clicked on that thread and started pouring through it all, it was so cool to see how it all worked! At the time it was basically a team of people that managed the images, but it seems like the team was constantly cycling through new people because they always lost interest. I thought to myself that I would love to do this sort of thing, so I just started helping the thread out, so much so I think I sort of burnt that team of people out a little bit Eventually after helping in the header image forum for a few months I worked up the courage to send a message to ask Sly to basically become a staff member and help out directly. Fully expecting a straight “No”, I actually got a “Sure, I'll add you once I change it over to crop to the higher res for the new design.” The new design he was referring to was what would be the launch of the current site visual layout (Also, messaging Sly will not make you a staff member here today, mine is a very special case, please don’t flood his inbox! Haha). Anyway, this was a really exciting thing, I couldn’t believe it! November 15th, 2013 was a really cool date for me, the launch of PS4, the launch of the current site redesign, and the day I became a staff member here. What’s really cool is the amount of freedom Sly gave me out of the gate (I really appreciated this, I probably wouldn’t be able to do that if I owned a site), he essentially handed me the keys and it was pretty much implied to have fun with it, so I did! I went pretty crazy those first few weeks, never getting bored of the idea of just making an amazing site even more amazing in the way that I could. What I immediately noticed is that it was really cool to be able to just change an image at any time, and how that affects many thousands of people. The effect of choosing an image for a trophy card so many people would see across the web, that being what identifies a game and what identifies the site, that’s still such a cool thing to think about to this day. No one mango should have all that power The way header images were managed worked a lot differently before I got here. Most games never got header images, only triple-a games did, and it usually took a week or two for new triple-a games to finally get a header image. Since I’ve been doing this, it would be odd if a new game didn’t get an image within 24 hours actually, and every new game gets a header image now, even obscure indie games or games only available in Japan. I started out with the idea that every game deserved to be shown off in a cool professional-like way, no matter what game it was, and I’ve actually managed to keep that up to this day! At the time I only really cared about header images, I didn’t use trophy cards much and most of them kind of had an image already. At some point the idea was floated to me to make trophy card images different than the header images (it used to mostly be the same image for both the header and trophy card, no matter how badly it was positioned in the trophy card). I thought it sounded like a cool idea so I started doing it, and that’s when I really started to appreciate trophy cards as well. Before I started on improving trophy cards, a lot of them were pretty badly cropped, with the main content of the image being shoved behind things and not in the center, it was cool to progressively make them all better than they were. So that’s sort of how I got my start here on the site. Helping out here is absolutely my one of my favorite things to do, and specifically what I do with the images is just a really cool and unique thing to do in general. This site will always feel like home for me, and it always makes me happy to see when others love using the site. 9. We all know PSNP is an amazing site, but what do you feel needs to change and what can be improved? Hmm, that's a tough one! This site is really great and there's not much wrong with it in my opinion! I will say that after the major site update releases and all the bugs and things are knocked out I hope Sly takes time to just start adding a bunch of cool little features people have been wanting for years. Personally I miss the friends feature, it would be nice to see that make a comeback where you could manually add friends to the site and see their activity on your games lists like you used to be able to. Other than that it seems like there’s a whole bunch of neat features that can be added with trophy data that most of us probably haven’t even thought of. I'd say it's really important that the community's feedback is always thought about when making something, that’s always how features end up coming out the best they can be. 10. Do you have any pets? Nope! I had a fish when I was young, but nothing else besides that. It was a Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish) – it had a red streak across it, it was pretty cool. Hmm, maybe someday I wouldn't be opposed to getting a dog or something! 11. How did you start your gaming career? My older brother was a huge reason for me getting into gaming. Growing up he owned things like Dreamcast and PlayStation, where I played amazing games like Spyro, Crazy Taxi, Tomb Raider, and many other incredible games I’m glad I didn’t miss out on. When the PS2 came out he introduced me to amazing games like Grand Theft Auto and Silent Hill. Then he practically rented a different game every week from Blockbuster and this is really when I got to play all kinds of games I would have never seen otherwise at the time like Kingdom Hearts. Eventually he bought an Xbox and his PS2 was handed off to me. I loved my PS2, though I still played with him during that golden era that Xbox blew up with games like Project Gotham, and Gears of War, and especially Halo, which was really cool to play on Xbox Live when it launched. Now that I owned the PS2 my love for PlayStation just grew and grew from there and I never left the platform. So yeah, I really wonder where I would be right now if I didn’t have a brother that loved gaming. 12. Do you have any future gaming goals? As far as trophies go my goals right now are to reach 95% average completion and 100 platinum trophies at some point. I achieved a lot of trophy goals I’ve had for a long time over the past year that I’m really proud of like 90% completion, reaching 50%+ for every game on my list (now 60%+), and so on. Gaming goals would be to finally get an Xbox and maybe even a Nintendo alongside my PlayStation someday once I have the extra money lying around. I think I really want the PS4 Pro at some point though, does anyone have a 4K TV lying around plus $400? 13. What is your favorite movie? Favorite game? Every time I’m asked for my favorite game I always stall out, I wouldn’t say I have an all-time definite favorite because I’ve played some really amazing games. Breaking it down to console generation I’d say my favorites on PS2 were Kingdom Hearts II and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. My favorite PS3 games were Mirror’s Edge, Burnout Paradise, The Last of Us, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Battlefield 3, and Rainbow Six Vegas (PS3 was a great generation). PS4 so far is Driveclub, Rainbow Six Siege, and Uncharted 4. All of these games were really special to me for one reason or another, for example The Last of Us and Modern Warfare had incredible stories that I’ll never forget (I was so happy to play the remaster recently). DICE did this thing in the PS3 generation where every aspect of games like Mirror’s Edge & Battlefield 3 were like this amazing creation of art, sound, and "experience"; this sense of being immersed that really appealed to the senses from , they were also just so fun to play – I’ve never played anything quite like those games since then. Modern Warfare 2, Burnout Paradise, Battlefield 3, and Rainbow Six were some of the best multiplayer experiences I’ve had in gaming, I met people in those games I still play with today, some I know really well, and one person I’ve met in real life recently after knowing them for more than 4 years (which was really cool). Then games like Kingdom Hearts II, San Andreas, and Driveclub are games I just spent hundreds of hours playing each, they just never seem to get boring and are just created so well. So yeah, I have a lot of favorite games that I can't narrow down, haha. Movies on the other hand are something I’m really bad at, I have a really long list of movies I’ve needed to watch over the years. Games always overtake movies as far as entertainment for me, but some of my favorite movies are I, Robot, The Town, and The Dark Knight. I also like shows like Breaking Bad and House of Cards. I need to watch more movies. 14. What is your favorite city to visit and what would you recommend to do there? This question makes me wish I traveled more, haha. Probably the coolest city I’ve been to was Las Vegas about 8 years ago, it really is as cool as it seems in movies & pictures. Just walking through all the massive hotels on the strip and exploring what all of them had inside of them took two full days to do. We also took a tour of Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon on one day, which was an amazing thing to do, highly recommend that. It’s pretty fascinating seeing how Vegas has evolved and how much has been added to it over such a short amount of time, I’d like to go again one day just to see all the new stuff that’s been added. I even saw a giant PSP billboard at the time I visited, I wasn’t expecting that and I took a picture. An image I took of The Strip (Las Vegas Blvd) from the top of the Paris Hotel mini Eiffel Tower and the PSP Billboard 15. If you had to change your PSN and forum avatar, what would you choose? Hmm, I’d probably try to find something else that looked like a blind mango! If I had no luck with that though I’d probably try a favorite game of mine. Finally, there were some questions I liked that couldn’t make it in the official interview, so rapid fire answers: Am I blind in real life? – Nope, my vision is actually pretty good! Do I like to eat mangos? – No, that would be murder! Blenders – I don’t know what all of you are talking about, blenders are terrible machines you shouldn’t purchase, down with Blendtec! Ever set a guide to “Unpublishable”? – Yes, but it’s very rare, usually it’s if people keep trolling the guide team. 3 strikes you’re out! Why do you hate the new wave emote so much? – It’s total crap! No emotion, no animation… No soul! Oldwave was the best What do you like most about the site? – I love the community. I also love visually how it looks and how it all magically works! You know Sly personally? – Nope, but one day I must at least hear his voice! I bet he sounds like a Helghast… They have British accents so I think I’m on to something! Level in Rainbow Six Siege, Favorite Operator? – Level 88, and Valkyrie (Her throwable cameras are awesome). Are you critical when you read everything else as you are when you read guides? – Haha, sometimes. When will you change the Persona 4 Golden header image? – Never! … Okay maybe after the site update How many people do you report/ban a year? – I’m not a forum mod, so I can’t ban people there. I’ve only had to ban 1 person in guides. Never reported anyone actually! Most memorable trophy? – Champion in MotorStorm: Pacific Rift. It took nearly a decade of yelling at my TV and constantly giving up and coming back to get it, haha Will I stop ’ing Dragon when reviewing guides? – Never! Favorite Pokemon? – Charizard. These are some really great answers to some really great questions, thanks again for allowing the site to know a bit more about you. Satoshi Ookami
Nice interview! Glad to see Japanese games mentioned! I can only imagine how tough finding pictures for games you may not even know name of can be Great job and keep it up, we all love your headers

Undead Wolf
Except for the Persona 4 Golden one . I don't think the P4G header looks that bad. What do people dislike about it so much? Maybe I'm bias though because I use the same thing for my cover image on PS4.
blazeaire
Oh wow I feel like such a flop, I had no idea someone actually manually put images in the headers lmao, thought it was all automatic thanks for all your hard work! especially for the more obscure games, you update them so fast, I really did think it was all automated

I can only imagine how tough finding pictures for games you may not even know name of can be Great job and keep it up, we all love your headers Yeah, sometimes it's tough but it's cool trying to figure out what the game is about and making sure it's the right thing in the end. I even know the difference between if the language is Korean, Japanese, and Chinese easily now - I can tell if a game has "Trophy" or "Trophy List/Set" in Japanese for its title, don't know any other words in particular though haha. They are still complicated languages to me even though I've worked with them for years now! And thanks! It's pretty easy to distinguish if you are familiar with one, but knowing them without previous knowledge is a great feat!

Dragon-Archon
Why do you hate the new wave emote so much? – It’s total crap! No emotion, no animation… No soul! Oldwave was the best Will I stop ’ing Dragon when reviewing guides? – Never! Favorite Pokemon? – Charizard. Nice interview Mango, it's a great read . I totally agree with the new wave emoticon, old wave is far better. Looks like I'll have to get a blender to stop the 'ing though. My favourite pokemon is Charizard too . Except for the Persona 4 Golden one . What's so bad about it? I don't think the P4G header looks that bad. What do people dislike about it so much? Same here, I also don't get it.

Nothing in particular really, I was just joking as one of the questions was when the P4G header imagine was going to change . It's not my favorite but I also don't dislike it at all, it's fine .
