Your Top 10 Highly Successful/Most Popular games that you missed out on growing up as a gamer?

What is your top 10 most commonly, highest rated games of all time that you've missed out on playing since you started your gaming career? To be fair, nothing far, far back like the Sega Saturn Era should be listed. (Rule-) The NES Era and up I think is generally more fair grounds here. The games you list also do not need to be games you were interested in, just games you missed out on for lack of advertisement, you played outside more, you were involved in too many activities to be aware of them, lack of money, lack of system at the time, etc.

1. Metal Gear Solid 4

2. Super Mario 64

3. Chrono Trigger

4. Pokemon Snap

5. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

6. Final Fantasy (whichever one is commonly more claimed or accepted to being the best one)

7. Kingdom Hearts

8. Resident Evil 4

9. Grand Theft Auto (whichever one is considered the best)

10. Crash Team Racing

My list includes the original releases and then also the remasters/remakes. And I handicapped myself by listing 1 game per franchise for more variety and fairness; otherwise, I could have included others like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and LoZ: Majora's Mask, but you aren't warranted to doing the samething though.

Listing off all the "Generation Defining" games I missed is way more then 10,

but listing off the ones I actually want to play? Well...

1: Goldeneye

2: Crysis

3: Halo (The best one)

4: WipEout (Any of them)

5: Half-Life 1

6: Sonic Adventure 2

7: Max Payne 2

8: Tomb Raider (The best one)

9: Doom (The best one)

10: Counter-Strike

I would say it would mostly be NES games. We had it when we were kids and it wasn't until the SNES that my brother and I would buy our own games. So we were at the mercy of my Dad who would buy the shittiest games instead of asking us what we may like (it is actually why I vowed to not allow parents to buy crappy games at the stores I worked at).

So instead of playing games like

Final Fantasy

Legend of Zelda (1 and 2)

Contra

Castlevania

Megaman (I did get to play Megaman 2-4 as I rented those from Startime)

Metroid

I was playing things like Back to the Future and X-men :(

Are we brothers? My dad bought X-Men. It was the worst. Almost as bad as the original TMNT, but not quite.

He didn't just buy it...it was the only game he ever played in his whole life. We played together for about 5 minutes when he died and said "this is stupid. Colossus would never die that quickly"  (still remember that line 25 years later)

Actually I never beat it as a kid because we couldn't figure out how to get to Magneto. We tried everything, even using Nightcrawler and trying to walk through the Practice Room to get to him...couldn't figure it out. Then as adults my brother and I were talking about the game and we decided to look it up. Turns out the code to get to Magneto was on the cartridge...but it was wrong. So there was a code to skip to the last boss and instead of putting it on the screen after beating all the bosses they instead put it in small print on the cartridge...gave no warning it was there...and then put the wrong code anyways.

Anyways we looked up the real code online and beat the stupid game 20 years after we had gotten it.

So yeah, I played the original X-Men :P

Because the question was asked multiple times, and Ill edit the OP....

Only the games you missed out on THAT are considered among the best THAT you never got around to playing just because other games were released, it went over your head, stuff like that. Wishing or wanting to have played it limits the concept to jusf games that you missed out on that you objectively have to have had some interest in. That will mean every list will contain the essence of interest for all 10 games per list. (Grammar, I know.)

Listing off all the "Generation Defining" games I missed is way more then 10,

but listing off the ones I actually want to play? Well...

10: Counter-Strike

That wasnt the singular point of the thread, it was just an additional category (by accident). You shouldnt be listing purely games that were moreso generation defining than actually highly/highest rated, even per gen, you should be listing generally highly rated games. Generation defining is a step higher and even a category of its own.

I saw part of this flaw in my thread the second right after I posted it, but I had no time to edit it out at the time. But I did so now, as that line itself was another subject itself.

Well then.. I only have two.

Legend of the Dragoon
Chrono Trigger

I was pretty lucky growing up that I was able to play a good majority of games I wanted to.  My family are all big fans of Final Fantasy so that's how I didn't miss out on that series but that was maybe about the only JRPG they liked.. so yes, I missed out on quite a lot of them and these are the two I still haven't got round to playing.

I've only ever gamed on Playstation and as a kid I bought my own console and games so what I owned was limited.

Never played:

Final Fantasy games - friends played them but I was interested in RPGs at the time, still haven't played any

Metal Gear Solid - never heard of the series till I played MGS4

Grand Theft Auto series - games were rated R18 so couldn't buy them, first one played was GTA IV

Spyro - was more interested in driving games and shooters at that time

Silent Hill series - didn't know much about them so didn't bother with them, still haven't played any

Resident Evil series - knew of them but didn't give them a look, have Resident Evil from PS+

Tomb Raider series - to be honest most of the games I didn't play were because I loved playing the Medal Of Honor and Gran Turismo games so much, first one played was the reboot

sadly or luckily, depending on point of view, haven't missed out on any...been gaming since 2 color dos and mac games and played all of the classics i can think of...even had this game i got from my parents that was a black and white pong game where you had to turn dials to move your paddle up and down...went to arcades every day after school for years as a kid (thanks dad for letting me steal money from your wallet every week; I know you knew) and have had consoles and handhelds since they came out...atari, sega, game boy, game gear, nes, ps, xbox, etc...$hit, never thought about it till now but been a gamer for life...just seemed normal...nostalgia 101...

I find these impractical to believe. Only because of the overwhelming large amount of popular games and series and systems they spawned on.

Dark Clouds?

Marios like Super Mario World, Galaxy, Sunshine, 64, Super Mario Bros 2 and 3, and all the most popular spinoffs like Double Dash, Strikers, and etc?

Spyros?

Medal of Honors?

Tomb Raiders?

Street Fighters?

Zeldas?

Megamans?

Sonics?

Pokemons?

Ninja Gaidens?

Metal Gears?

Silent Hills?

Legend of Dragoon?

Chronos?

(All of which almost entirely does not include the last 2 generations.)

And god so many others. Even for a rich gamer, every single person should easily have a default of at least 10 games related to this topic, especially since this covers over 5 generations of games. Theres too many, even if you had almost all the consoles growing up. Theres just an non comprehensive amount of these kinds of games out there. Between exclusives, region exclusives, limited production games (like with Sega's systems), included.

Why list games you wouldn't want to play or know you really wouldn't like?  Like Medal of Honor, I'm not into any shooters really except for the odd ones.  But the story of this kind of game will also be of no interest to me so it's a big turn off.  Other than that, I've played every other game you listed except for the last two.  The only series out of all those I disliked was Tomb Raider.

i found the idea of "best ever" hard to grasp as it is invariably quite subjective, influenced by where and which generation we grew up in...i thought "how would you know if you hadn't played something you'd never heard of?"...found this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_considered_the_best

and went through it...ah, the nostalgia...from this list have not played:

1 - grim fandango (pc)

2 - portal (xbox 360, pc)

3 - COD 4 (ps3, xbox, pc)

4 - advance wars (game boy advance)

5 - shenmue (dreamcast - how did i miss this?; looks brilliant)

6 - journey (ps3)

7 - nights into dreams... (saturn)

8 - xenogears (ps1)

9 - skies of arcadia (dreamcast)

10 - also not sure about the gamecube versions of zelda, metroid or super smash bros. (confused between n64 and gamecube on these ones, definitely missed at least one of these on either console)

and there you have it...something a little more concrete but still subjective i suppose...might be interesting to have this list or something like it in the OP to help some of us realize what we may have missed...
