Speedrunning Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

Recommended Posts

Before I decided to join this site, I was mainly active in a speedrunning community, primarily with the Uncharted series. When the Nathan Drake Collection was released me and other runners of the game were amazed to discover that not only Bluepoint Games didn't patch any glitches in the game, there were even more speedrunning tricks discovered by us later on. As the months went on, we were still discovering new ways to beat the game as fast as possible. Unfortunately, when I became one of the top runners I was determined to get a world record.

So I spent weeks and weeks on end grinding the story mode trying to beat it in less than 45 minutes, (the last time I got was 44 minutes I believe). Once I got that, it was clear that people who were watching me speedrun Drake's Fortune weren't too happy with the way I spoke to them and people involved in the community. Some even tried to tell me that I should take a break, but I was so determined to beat my time that I was ignoring my family, I almost ruined my education and I became angry at the slightest things. I would use every curse word possible to describe how "bad" the game was just because I died or I was too slow at a certain section.

I just about managed to finish school with good grades that were enough to secure me a decent job. Once that happened, I realised how much time I wasted on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, how much I hated on the game even though I didn't need to. I decided to part from the Uncharted speedrunning community, I still keep in touch with people who still run the game.

So that is my story of how a speedrunning trophy inspired me to continue doing it, and not for good reason. I guess I want to ask people who also experienced speedrunning (for the trophies), how did you feel about it? Did you continue trying to beat a certain time or did you just stop as soon as you got the trophy? Do you agree about glitches being allowed in speedruns? I'd love to hear from you.  :)

I mostly dont do speedruns, Mirror's Edge took care of that pretty much. Although I do use Speed Run videos for advice on how to get past some parts on Hard/Extreme modes for other games, not just Uncharted. Often Speedrunners find clever tactics or routine that quickly avoids some of the frustrating parts of the game, so it really came in handy. But to actually do Speedruns of it over and over? Not really, I dont have that kind of patience, that and 3 broken controllers.

As of today I am #1 in fastest achievers for Wolfenstein 3D. I sped through all 54 levels usually getting less than two - three minutes for most of them while skipping all the unnecessary parts. Got all trophies in three hours and 15 minutes and this was while taking breaks and making a few mistakes that ended up costing me a few minutes.

People have reported doing ALL levels in the entire game in less than a hour, and I would imagine there are people out there who can finish on I Am Death Incarnate difficulty around the two hour mark.

The ONLY reason I earned all trophies that fast was because I played the living crap out of Wolfenstein 3D back in the day. So I literally knew everything the game was going to throw at me.

Personally I don't like speed runs. They are aggravating and promote controller breaking. But Uncharted Drakes Fortune is a fairly short game, and easily doable in two hours playing on the easiest difficulty.

Sadly there's only episode based runs and all six episodes run. No difficulty or completion specific.

Yeah that's definitely the video. It's literally insane what people can do with speed running.

People have sped through Battletoads and Mega Man 1 both on the NES console like nothing. I've played both on NES and they are painfully difficult. Battletoads is infamous for being one of the most difficult games of all time, according to many people I've talked to.

Sometimes the glitches and exploits ruin a speedrun too. Vice City Any% used to be around one hour or so and was entertaining to watch and now it's 12 minutes without anything interesting in it. At least there's 100% that's 6h of variable entertainment value...
